Flocks of a quadratic cone in PG(3, q), q ≤ 8

If (O) is a quadratic cone in PG(3,q), with vertex x, then a flock of (O) is a partition of (O)-{x} into q disjoint conics. With such a flock there correspond a translation plane of order q ² and a generalized quadrangle of order (q ², q). Here we determine all flocks of (O) for q 8.     

On the Size of a Cap in PG(n,q) with q Even and n ≥ 3

Let m2(n,q), m2(n,q) be, respectively, the maximum value, the second largest value of k for which there exists a complete k-cap in PG(n,q). In this paper, the known upper bound on m2(3,q), q even, q 8, is improved. This new upper bound on m2(3,q) is then used to improve the upper bounds on m2(n,q), q even, q 8 and n 4.     

Linear Point Sets and Rédei Type k-blocking Sets in PG(n, q)

In this paper, k-blocking sets in PG(n, q), being of Rédei type, are investigated. A standard method to construct Rédei type k-blocking sets in PG(n, q) is to construct a cone having as base a Rédei type k-blocking set in a subspace of PG(n, q). But also other Rédei type k-blocking sets in PG(n, q), which are not cones, exist. We give in this article a condition on the parameters of a Rédei type k-blocking set of PG(n, q = p ^h ), p a prime power, which guarantees that the Rédei type k-blocking set is a cone. This condition is sharp. We also show that small Rédei type k-blocking sets are linear.     

On an Isomorphism Problem of Some Dual Hyperovals in PG(2d + 1, q) with q even

Let q = 2^l with l≥ 1 and d ≥ 2. We prove that any automorphism of the d-dimensional dual hyperoval over GF(q), constructed in [3] for any (d + 1)-dimensional GF(q)-vector subspace V in GF(qⁿ) with n≥ d + 1 and for any generator σ of the Galois group of GF(qⁿ) over GF(q), always fixes the special member X(∞). Moreover, we prove that, in case V = GF(q^d+1), two dual hyperovals and in PG(2d + 1,q), where σ and τ are generators of the Galois group of GF(q^d+1) over GF(q), are isomorphic if and only if (1) σ = τ or (2) σ τ = id. Therefore, we have proved that, even in the case q > 2, there exist non isomorphic d-dimensional dual hyperovals in PG(2d + 1,q) for d ≥ 3.     

On 1-Blocking Sets in PG(n,q), n ≥ 3

In this article we study minimal1-blocking sets in finite projective spaces _PG(n,q),n 3. We prove that in PG(n,q ²),q = p ^h , p prime, p > 3,h 1, the second smallest minimal 1-blockingsets are the second smallest minimal blocking sets, w.r.t.lines, in a plane of PG(n,q ²). We also study minimal1-blocking sets in PG(n,q ³), n 3, q = p ^h, p prime, p > 3,q 5, and prove that the minimal 1-blockingsets of cardinality at most q 3 + q ² + q + ¹ are eithera minimal blocking set in a plane or a subgeometry PG(3,q).     

Characterizations of PG(n − 1, q)\PG(k − 1, q) by Numerical and Polynomial Invariants

We show that the simple matroid PG(n − 1, q)\PG(k − 1, q), for n ≥ 4 and 1 ≤ k ≤ n − 2, is characterized by a variety of numerical and polynomial invariants. In particular, any matroid that has the same Tutte polynomial as PG(n − 1, q)\PG(k − 1, q) is isomorphic to PG(n − 1, q)\PG(k − 1, q).     

Cameron–Liebler line classes in PG(n,4)

We derive a new existence condition for Cameron–Liebler line classes in \(PG(3,q)\) . As an application, we obtain the characterization of Cameron–Liebler line classes in \(PG(n,4),\,n\ge 3\) .

Simple 3-designs and PSL(2, q) with q ≡ 1 (mod 4)

In this paper, we consider the action of (2, q) on the finite projective line for q ≡ 1 (mod 4) and construct several infinite families of simple 3-designs which admit PSL(2, q) as an automorphism group. Some of the designs are also minimal. We also indicate a general outline to obtain some other algebraic constructions of simple 3-designs.
