This article focuses on the application of optical fiber technology to meet the needs of local network communication systems. To put the technology in perspective, a brief evolution of fiber optics is provided. The evolution resulted in wide acceptance of fiber optics in telephony applications. Also reviewed is the impact of fiber on local networks, fiber optic components, emerging LAN (local area network) system trends, and the most cost-effective fiber for use in local network applications.  相似文献

This paper reviews recent developments of fiber optics technology and applications in the United States. The major application of fiber optics in the world is in telecommunications, and the United States represents 40% of this world market. In 1986, U.S. telecommunications companies, mainly telephone companies, will invest $24 billion dollars in new telephone plants. Of this, approximately 4% will be invested in fiber optics. These telephony applications represent approximately 80–90% of the total fiber optics equipment market. The remaining market is divided among a number of applications such as local area networks (LAN), military data links, CATV, and process control. Each of these applications is discussed and factors affecting the use of fiber optics are analyzed.  相似文献

The need for a new avionic interconnection scheme that can provide superior performance, installability and maintainability as compared with copper has become evident. Fiber optics, which has been proposed for this role, is expected to improve environmental immunity, decrease system weight, and increase bandwidth. It has also been suggested that sensors based on fiber optics can offer significant advantages in aerospace applications. Realizing these advantages is a difficult challenge because mature sensing technologies have done a good job at reasonable cost. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that a wide variety of aircraft electrical sensors can be addressed by a few standard interfaces. Therefore, future fiber optic sensor suites will also need to be interrogated through only a few standard interfaces, and standardization of the fiber optic sensor interface will be a primary issue in furthering fiber optic sensing technology for aerospace applications. This paper discusses the fiber optic sensor standardization process underway in the Avionic Systems Division of the Society of Automotive Engineers.  相似文献

近红外光谱是 2 0世纪 90年代以来发展最快、最引人注目的光谱分析技术。阐述了近红外光谱的原理、技术特点 ,介绍了近红外光谱仪、光谱预处理方法以及化学计量学研究的发展过程 ,重点列举了近红外光谱在农业和食品分析中的成功应用实例。资料表明 ,近红外光谱以其速度快、不破坏样品、操作简单、稳定性好、效率高等特点 ,已广泛应用于各个领域。特别是在欧美及日本等发达国家 ,很多近红外光谱分析法被列为标准方法。而我国近红外光谱的应用研究起步较晚 ,虽然某些方面已具国际领先水平 ,但就总体来看与国际水平还有大的差距。文章首次提出了集中优势资源 ,包括人力资源和设备资源 ,利用现代网络技术 ,建立终端用户和中心数据库资源共享的模式 ,以推动近红外光谱技术在我国农业科技和生产中的应用。  相似文献

The Fourier transform of a coherent optical image can be evaluated physically by use of a single lens plus free-space propagation, thereby providing the basis for the field of Fourier optics. I point out that one can similarly evaluate the discrete Fourier transform of a sampled or pixelated optical array physically by passing the discrete array amplitudes through a network of single-mode fibers or optical waveguides. A passive optical network that evaluates the fast Fourier transform of a coherent array can be fabricated by use of (N/2)log(2)[N] optical 3-dB couplers plus small added phase shifts. Implementing such networks in fiber or integrated optical form could provide the basis for a possible technology of fiber Fourier optics.  相似文献

Free-space optics (FSO) has the combined features of most dominated telecommunication technologies: wireless and fiber optics. Many of the aspects of FSO are related to fiber optics with an important difference of transmission medium which is air/free space rather than the glass of the fiber-optic cable. Inter-satellite optical wireless communication systems (IsOWC), one of the important applications of FSO/WSO technology, will be deployed in space in the near future as such systems provide a high bandwidth, small size, light weight, low power and low cost alternative to present microwave satellite systems. In this paper, we have designed a model of IsOWC system using OPTI-SYSTEM™ simulator to establish an inter-satellite link (ISL) between two satellites estranged by a distance of 1000 km at data rate of 2.5 Gbps which is not reported in previous investigated works.  相似文献

Biophotonics and nonlinear fiber optics have traditionally been two independent fields. Since the discovery of fiber‐based supercontinuum generation in 1999, biophotonics applications employing incoherent light have experienced a large impact from nonlinear fiber optics, primarily because of the access to a wide range of wavelengths and a uniform spatial profile afforded by fiber supercontinuum. However, biophotonics applications employing coherent light have not benefited from the most well‐known techniques of supercontinuum generation for reasons such as poor coherence (or high noise), insufficient controllability, and inadequate portability. Fortunately, a few key techniques involving nonlinear fiber optics and femtosecond laser development have emerged to overcome these critical limitations. Despite their relative independence, these techniques are the focus of this review, because they can be integrated into a low‐cost portable biophotonics source platform. This platform can be shared across many different areas of research in biophotonics, enabling new applications such as point‐of‐care coherent optical biomedical imaging.  相似文献

This paper deals with the present situation and the foreseen evolution of optical technologies in the Italian Telecommunications Network. In the last decade the Italian network has been characterized by the progressive introduction of digital transmission and switching techniques. The deployment of optical facilities in the transmission network was the tool to fully exploit the economic and operational benefits of the new digital technologies. The introduction of fiber optics (FO) in the subscriber loop is at present a key issue to modernize the access network and to provide large business customers with advanced and high-quality services. A special project is underway. In future years the transition to synchronous transmission systems (SDH), together with the upgrading of the management systems, will permit a better network survivability with real-time supervision and control.  相似文献

The concept of the smart structure integrates structural engineering, sensing, control systems, and actuation to provide a mechanical assembly that is capable of responding to its environment and/or loading conditions. The realization of the smart structure requires integration of skills in a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines ranging from mechanical engineering through materials science into signal processing, data analysis, sensing, and actuation. The sensing technology must have a number of key features of which the ability to take distributed measurements of various parameters throughout the structure is paramount. Therefore, fiber optics technology promises to have a significant role to play in the evolution of the smart structures concept. This article analyzes this role in detail, presents an assessment of the current state of the art in fiber optic technology related to smart structures, and presents a scenario for future developments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The recent dramatic advances in information and communication technologies have yielded new environments. However, adoption still differs area by area. To realize the future broadband environment that everyone can enjoy everywhere, several technical issues have to be resolved before network penetration becomes ubiquitous. One such key is the use of fiber optics for the home and mobile services. This article overviews initial observations drawn from numerical survey data gathered over the last decade in several countries/regions, and gives some example scenarios for network/service evolution. One result implies that implementing new/future services must consider the gross domestic product impact.  相似文献

Controlling optical aberrations is one of the enduring problems in optics. Recent advances in adaptive optics for astronomical applications have shown the promise of adaptive optics technology for controlling aberrations. Micro-electro-mechanical deformable mirrors (MEM-DMs) offer an alternative to conventional adaptive optics which, due to the inexpensive nature of MEM-DM technology, will enable a wide range of commercial and scientific applications for optical wave front control. In this paper we describe MEM-DMs, present results of modelling the performance of an MEM-DM for optical aberration control, and present results of experiments to verify that MEM-DMs can control optical aberrations.  相似文献
