This work provides the first systematic test of validity of the embedded-atom potentials of Mei et al. [Phys. Rev. B 43 (1991) 4653], via a complete study of the vibrational and thermodynamic properties of isoelectronic transition (Ni, Pd, Pt) and noble (Cu, Ag, Au) metals. Phonon dispersion curves and thermal properties are studied within the quasiharmonic approximation. Results for the temperature-dependence of the lattice constants, coefficients of linear thermal expansion, isothermal and adiabatic bulk moduli, heat capacities at constant volume and constant pressure, Debye temperatures and Grüneisen parameters are presented. Electronic contribution to the specific heat is included explicitly via density-functional calculation. The calculated phonon frequencies for Ag and Cu agree well with the results from inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Despite less satisfactory agreement between calculated and measured phonon frequencies for the other four metals, isothermal and adiabatic bulk moduli and the specific heats of all metals are reproduced reasonably well by the model, while the Grüneisen parameter and Debye temperature are underestimated by about 10%. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion is underestimated with respect to measured values in most cases except for Pt and Au. The results are good for Pt up to 1000 K and for Au up to 500 K.  相似文献

The ab initio calculations have been used to study the generalized-stacking-fault energy (GSFE) surfaces and surface energies for the closed-packed (1 1 1) plane in FCC metals Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Al, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt, and Pb. The GSFE curves along (1 1 1) direction and (1 1 1) direction, and surface energies have been calculated from first principles. Based on the translational symmetry of the GSFE surfaces, the fitted expressions have been obtained from the Fourier series. Our results of the GSFEs and surface energies agree better with experimental results. The metals Al, Pd, and Pt have low γus/γI value, so full dislocation will be observed easily; while Cu, Ag, Au, and Ni have large γus/γI value, so it is preferred to create partial dislocation. From the calculations of surface energies, it is confirmed that the VIII column elements Ni, Rh, Ir, Pd, and Pt have higher surface energies than other metals.  相似文献

Transition metals are often introduced to a catalyst as promoters to improve catalytic performance. In this work, we study the promotion effect of transition metals on Co, the preferred catalytic metal for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis because of its good compromise of activity, selectivity and stability, for ethylene chemisorption using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, aiming to provide some insight into improving the α-olefin selectivity. In order to obtain the general trend of influence on ethylene chemisorption, twelve transition metals (Zr, Mn, Re, Ru, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au) are calculated. We find that the late transition metals (e.g. Pd and Cu) can decrease ethylene chemisorption energy. These results suggest that the addition of the late transition metals may improve α-olefin selectivity. Electronic structure analyses (both charge density distributions and density of states) are also performed and the understanding of calculated results is presented.  相似文献

The trapping probabilities of argon, krypton, and xenon on Pd(1 1 1) and Ni(1 1 1) have been investigated using supersonic molecular beam techniques. The trapping probability of argon exhibits normal incident energy in a similar fashion on both Pd(1 1 1) and Pt(1 1 1) because the mass of argon is significantly less than the surface mass of either Pd or Pt. In contrast, dynamic corrugation in the gas-surface potential is observed for krypton trapping on Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1), resulting in a decreased angular dependence of the trapping probability compared to argon. For xenon trapping on Pd significant lattice deformation during the gas-surface collision appears to give rise to total energy scaling. The trapping probability of xenon on Pd(1 1 1) remains high at unusually high incident kinetic energies due to the overall enhanced energy transfer from the incident atom to the lattice. Trapping probabilities of Ar, Kr, and Xe are significantly lower on Ni(1 1 1) than on either Pt(1 1 1) or Pd(1 1 1) despite the lower surface mass of the Ni atoms. This result is attributed to the lower binding energy of the rare gases on Ni(1 1 1) and the higher Debye temperature of Ni. The energy scaling of Ar trapping on Ni(1 1 1) is determined by static corrugation, but the energy scaling for Kr and Xe on Ni(1 1 1) may involve the effects of dynamic corrugation. In the latter cases, the greater stiffness of the nickel lattice decreases the dynamic corrugation relative to Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1).  相似文献

The electronic structures of Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, and Zn atoms adsorbed on the perfect MgO(1 0 0) surface and on a surface oxygen vacancy have been studied at the DFT/B3LYP level of theory using both the bare cluster and embedded cluster models. Ni, Pd, Pt, and Cu atoms can form stable adsorption complexes on the regular O site of the perfect MgO(1 0 0) surface with the binding energies of 19.0, 25.2, 46.7, and 17.3 kcal/mol, respectively, despite very little electron transfer between the surface and the metal atoms. On the other hand, adsorptions of Ni, Pd, Pt, and Cu atoms show strong interaction with an oxygen vacancy on the MgO(1 0 0) surface by transferring a significant number of electron charges from the vacancy to the adsorbed metal atoms and thus forming ionic bonds with the vacancy site. These interactions on the vacancy site for Ni, Pd, Pt, and Cu atoms increase the binding energies by 25.8, 59.7, 85.2, and 19.1 kcal/mol, respectively, compared to those on the perfect surface. Zn atom interacts very weakly with the perfect surface as well as the surface oxygen vacancy. We observed that the interaction increases from Ni to Pt in the same group and decreases from Ni to Zn in the same transition metal period in both perfect and vacancy systems. These relationships correlate well with the degrees of electron transfer from the surface to the adsorbed metal atom. The changes in the ionization potentials of the surface also correlate with the adsorption energies or degrees of electron transfers. Madelung potential is found to have significant effects on the electronic properties of metal atom adsorptions on the MgO(1 0 0) surface as well as on an oxygen vacancy, though it is more so for the latter. Furthermore, the Madelung potential facilitates electron transfer from the surface to the adsorbed metal atoms but not in the other direction.  相似文献

The surface energies for 38 surfaces of fcc metals Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Pd, Pt, A1, Pb, Rh and Ir have been calculated by using the modified embedded-atom method. The results show that, for Cu, Ag, Ni, A1, Pb and Ir, the average values of the surface energies are very close to the polycrystalline experimental data. For all fcc metals, as predicted, the close-packed (111) surface has the lowest surface energy. The surface energies for the other surfaces increase linearly with increasing angle between the surfaces (hkl) and (111). This can be used to estimate the relative values of the surface energy.  相似文献

Adsorption of methanol on clean Pd(1 1 0) and on an alloyed Ag/Pd(1 1 0) surface has been studied by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy. On Pd(1 1 0) two different chemisorbed methanol species were observed for temperatures up to 200 K, with the one at lower binding energy remaining at low coverage. These species were attributed to methanol adsorbed in two different adsorption sites on the Pd(1 1 0) surface. As is well established for this system, heating to 250 K resulted in decomposition of methanol into CO. The adsorption and decomposition behaviour of methanol on the Ag/Pd(1 1 0) surface alloy formed by depositing Ag on Pd(1 1 0) at elevated temperature was similar to that of the pure Pd(1 1 0) surface. This suggests that the amount of Ag present in the Pd(1 1 0) surface in this study does not affect the decomposition behaviour of methanol as compared to pure Pd(1 1 0). Complementary density functional theory calculations also show little influence of Ag on the binding of methanol to Pd. These calculations predict an on-top adsorption site for low methanol coverages.  相似文献

With modified analytical embedded atom method (MAEAM), the energy of (0 1 1) twist grain boundary (GB) has been calculated for three noble metals Cu, Ag and Au. The results show that the unrelaxed energy keeps almost constant with twist angle θ except several cusps at low Σ boundaries. The GB energies drop significantly after expansion perpendicular to the boundary. In-boundary translation results in a periodic energy variation and the rectangular period is 1/Σ of their own CSL smallest unit cell. Three specific positions, the corners or centre of the periodic rectangle, or the midpoints of the sides, are preferable in GB translation.  相似文献

Series of bimetallic systems were prepared by replacement reactions and characterized by XRD and XPS. The results suggest that the ad-metals are monolayer dispersed on the surface of sub-metal in Pd(Pt, Cu)/Co(Ni) systems, while in Pd(Pt, Au)/Cu systems surface solid solution is formed. In Ag(Au)/Co(Ni) and Ag/Cu systems no interaction between the metals is observed just as in the simple mixture of the respective crystallites. The outermost electronic configurations, the atomic radius of the metals, and the low-preparation temperature seem to be important factors for the different states of these bimetallic catalysts.  相似文献

The (001) surface multilayer relaxation results calculated by the modified embedded atom method (MEAM) show that Ni, Al, Rh and Ir (001) surface are ‘anomalous’ outward relaxation, while Cu, Ag, Au, Pd, Pt and Pb (001) surface are inward relaxation. For the inward relaxation metals, the relaxation between the first two layers increase for the 3d, 4d and 5d metals at the same column in the periodic table, successively. The expansion (contraction) between the first two layers at fcc (001) surfaces is accompanied by the decrease (increase) in the electronic density at the lattice of the first two layers. The surface energies results show that the surface energies decrease for all fcc (001) surfaces due to relaxation, whereas the changes not more than 5%.  相似文献

Density functional theory calculations are performed to investigate the C diffusion through the surface and subsurface of Ag/Ni(1 0 0) and reconstructed Ag/Ni(1 0 0). The calculated geometric parameters indicate the center of doped Ag is located above the Ni(1 0 0) surface owing to the size mismatch. The C binding on the alloy surface is substantially weakened, arising from the less attractive interaction between C and Ag atoms, while in the subsurface, the C adsorption is promoted as the Ag coverage is increased. The effect of substitutional Ag on the adsorption property of Ni(1 0 0) is rather short-range, which agrees well with the analysis of the projected density of states. Seven pathways are constructed to explore the C diffusion behavior on the bimetallic surface. Along the most kinetically favorable pathway, a C atom hops between two fourfold hollow sites via an adjacent octahedral site in the subsurface of reconstructed Ag/Ni(1 0 0). The “clock” reconstruction which tends to improve the surface mobility, is more favorable on the alloy surface because the c(2 × 2) symmetry is inherently broken by the Ag impurity. As a consequence, the local lattice strain induced by the C transport is effectively relieved by the Ag-enhanced surface mobility and the C diffusion barrier is lowered from 1.16 to 0.76 eV.  相似文献

Pd-Cu bimetallic surfaces formed through a vacuum-deposition of Pd on Cu(1 1 1) have been discussed on the basis of carbon monoxide (CO) adsorption: CO is used as a surface probe and infrared reflection absorption (IRRAS) spectra are recorded for the CO-adsorbed surfaces. Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) patterns for the bimetallic surfaces reveal six-fold symmetry even after the deposition of 0.6 nm. The lattice spacings estimated by the separations of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) streaks increase with increasing Pd thickness. Room-temperature CO exposures to the bimetallic surfaces formed by the Pd depositions less than 0.3 nm thickness generate the IRRAS bands due to the three-fold-hollow-, bridge- and linear-bonded CO to Pd atoms. In particular, on the 0.1 nm-thick Pd surface, the linear-bonded CO band becomes apparent at an earlier stage of the exposure. In contrast, the bridge-bonded CO band dominates the IRRAS spectra for CO adsorption on the 0.6 nm-thick Pd surface, at which the lattice spacing corresponds to that of Pd(1 1 1). A 90 K-CO exposure to the 0.1 nm-thick Pd surface leads to the IRRAS bands caused not only by CO-Pd but also by CO-Cu, while the Cu-related band is almost absent from the spectra for the 0.3 nm-thick Pd surface. The results clearly reveal that local atomic structures of the outermost bimetallic surface can be discussed by the IRRAS spectra for the probe molecule.  相似文献

Thin Pd films (1-10 monolayers, ML) were deposited at 35 K on a Pt(1 1 1) single crystal and on an oxygen-terminated FeO(1 1 1) monolayer supported on Pt(1 1 1). Low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, and Kr and CO temperature programmed desorption techniques were used to investigate the annealing induced changes in the film surface morphology. For growth on Pt(1 1 1), the films order upon annealing to 500 K and form epitaxial Pd(1 1 1). Further annealing above 900 K results in Pd diffusion into the Pt(1 1 1) bulk and Pt-Pd alloy formation. Chemisorption of CO shows that even the first ordered monolayer of Pd on Pt(1 1 1) has adsorption properties identical to bulk Pd(1 1 1). Similar experiments conducted on FeO(1 1 1) indicate that 500 K annealing of a 10 ML thick Pd deposit also yields ordered Pd(1 1 1). In contrast, annealing of 1 and 3 ML thick Pd films did not result in formation of continuous Pd(1 1 1). We speculate that for these thinner films Pd diffuses underneath the FeO(1 1 1).  相似文献

The adsorption of CN on Cu(1 1 1), Ni(1 1 1) and Ni(1 0 0) has been investigated using density functional theory (DFT). While experimental studies of CN on Cu(1 1 1) show the molecular axis to be essentially parallel to the surface, the normally-preferred DFT approach using the generalised gradient approximation (GGA) yields a lowest energy configuration with the C-N axis perpendicular to the surface, although calculations using the local density approximation (LDA) do indicate that the experimental geometry is energetically favoured. The same conclusions are found for CN on Ni(1 1 1); on both surfaces bonding through the N atom is always unfavourable, in contrast to some earlier published results of ab initio calculations for Ni(1 1 1)/CN and Ni(1 0 0)/CN. The different predictions of the GGA and LDA approaches may lie in subtly different relative energies of the CN 5σ and 1π orbitals, a situation somewhat similar to that for CO adsorbed on Pt(1 1 1) which has proved challenging for DFT calculations. On Ni(1 0 0) GGA calculations favour a lying-down species in a hollow site in a geometry rather similar to that found experimentally and in GGA calculations for CN on Ni(1 1 0).  相似文献

The infrared (IR) chemiluminescence studies of CO2 formed during steady-state CO oxidation over Pd(1 1 1), Pt(1 1 1), and Rh(1 1 1) surfaces were carried out. Analysis of their emission spectra indicates that the order of the average vibrational temperature () values of CO2 formed during CO oxidation was as follows: Pd(1 1 1) > Pt(1 1 1) > Rh(1 1 1), and the order is coincident with the potential energy in the transition state expected by the theoretical calculations. Furthermore, it is suggested that the bending vibrational temperature () can also be influenced by the angle of O-C-O (∠OCO) of the activated complex in the transition state, which has also been proposed by the theoretical calculations.  相似文献

We study the lateral and vertical manipulations of single Ag and Cu atoms on the Ag(1 1 1) surface with the Cu single-atom and trimer-apex tips using molecular statics simulations. The reliability of the lateral manipulation with the Cu single-atom tip is investigated, and compared with that for the Ag tips. We find that overall the manipulation reliability (MR) increases with the decreasing tip height, and in a wide tip-height range the MR is better than those for both the Ag single-atom and trimer-apex tips. This is due to the stronger attractive force of the Cu tip and its better stability against the interactions with the Ag surface. With the Cu trimer-apex tip, the single Ag and Cu adatoms can be picked up from the flat Ag(1 1 1) surface, and moreover a reversible vertical manipulation of single Ag atoms on the stepped Ag(1 1 1) surface is possible, suggesting a method to modify two-dimensional Ag nanostructures on the Ag(1 1 1) surface with the Cu trimer-apex tip.  相似文献

The geometry and the vibrational properties of missing row reconstructed O/Cu(0 0 1) and O/Ag(0 0 1) surfaces are investigated by means of density functional theory and density functional perturbation theory, using the local density and the generalized-gradient approximations. Our results predict very similar structural and vibrational properties for the two reconstructed surfaces. In the case of copper our calculations reproduce quite accurately the experimental results, while for the missing row reconstructed O/Ag(0 0 1) surface the agreement between theory and experiment is less satisfactory.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on the growth process of ultra-thin Ag and Au layers on the Mo(1 1 1) surface was investigated. At 300 K growth of the Stranski-Krastanov type was found for Ag; for Au growth of the monolayer plus simultaneous multilayers type was found, where a base layer is one physical layer. The first three geometrical adsorbed layers for Ag are thermally stable. For annealed Au layers triangle features with base side length from 15 to 35 Å were formed for θ < 6 monolayer (ML), and for θ > 6 ML part of the Au formed a flat adlayer with Au atoms grouped in equilateral triangles with side length 7 Å. The presence of Au layers does not cause faceting, layers are not smooth which could be caused by the fact that Au does not wets the substrate. For Ag thick layers reversible wetting/non-wetting transition was observed at 600 K. Ag layers on Mo(1 1 1) surface did not lead to faceting.  相似文献

The adsorption of Pd, Ag and Au atoms on a porous silica film on Mo(1 1 2) is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory. While Pd atoms are able to penetrate the holes in the silica top-layer with virtually no barrier, Ag atoms experience an intermediate barrier value and Au atoms are completely unable to pass the oxide surface. The penetration probability does not correlate with the effective size of the atoms, but depends on their electronic structure. Whereas Pd with an unoccupied valence s-orbital has a low penetration barrier, Ag and Au atoms with occupied s-states experience a substantial repulsion with the filled oxide states, leading to a higher barrier for penetration. In the case of Ag, the barrier height can be temporally lowered by promoting the Ag 5s-electron into the support. The Mo-supported silica film can thus be considered as a primitive form of an atomic sieve whose selectivity is controlled by the electronic structure of the adatoms.  相似文献
