The paper presents an analytical construction of effective two-phase parameters for one-dimensional heterogeneous porous media, and studies their properties. We base the computation of effective parameters on analytical solutions for steady-state saturation distributions. Special care has to be taken with respect to saturation and pressure discontinuities at the interface between different rocks. The ensuing effective relative permeabilities and effective capillary pressure will be functions of rate, flow direction, fluid viscosities, and spatial scale of the heterogeneities. The applicability of the effective parameters in dynamic displacement situations is studied by comparing fine-gridded simulations in heterogeneous media with simulations in their homogeneous (effective) counterparts. Performance is quite satisfactory, even with strong fronts present. Also, we report computations studying the applicability of capillary limit parameters outside the strict limit.  相似文献

We present a new method for calculating the effective two-phase parameters of one-dimensional randomly heterogeneous porous media, which avoids the timeconsuming use of simulations on explicit realizations. The procedure is based on the steady state saturation distribution. The idea is to model the local variation of saturation and saturation dependent parameters as Markov chains, in such a way that the effective parameters are given by the asymptotic expectations of the chains. We derive the exact asymptotic moment equations and solve them numerically, based on their second order approximation. The method determines the effective parameters to a high degree of accuracy, even with large variations in rock properties. In particular, the capillary limit and viscous limit effective parameters are recovered exactly. The applicability of the effective parameters in the unsteady state case is studied by comparing the displacement production profiles in heterogeneous media and their homogenized counterpart.  相似文献

The most general representation of the functions of the relative phase permeabilities for porous media is written explicitly. The relations proposed for the relative phase permeabilities generalize those obtained earlier for media with transversely-isotropic and orthotropic percolation properties [1, 2] which can now be obtained as a particular case. A laboratory measurement technique for finding the percolation properties and determining the absolute and phase permeabilities for media with different types of anisotropy is discussed.__________Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, 2005, pp. 118–125.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Dmitriev, Dmitriev, and Maksimov.  相似文献

Traditional mathematical models of multiphase flow in porous media use a straightforward extension of Darcys equation. The key element of these models is the appropriate formulation of the relative permeability functions. It is well known that for one-dimensional flow of three immiscible incompressible fluids, when capillarity is neglected, most relative permeability models used today give rise to regions in the saturation space with elliptic behavior (the so-called elliptic regions). We believe that this behavior is not physical, but rather the result of an incomplete mathematical model. In this paper we identify necessary conditions that must be satisfied by the relative permeability functions, so that the system of equations describing three-phase flow is strictly hyperbolic everywhere in the saturation triangle. These conditions seem to be in good agreement with pore-scale physics and experimental data.  相似文献

A parametric two-phase, oil–water relative permeability/capillary pressure model for petroleum engineering and environmental applications is developed for porous media in which the smaller pores are strongly water-wet and the larger pores tend to be intermediate- or oil-wet. A saturation index, which can vary from 0 to 1, is used to distinguish those pores that are strongly water-wet from those that have intermediate- or oil-wet characteristics. The capillary pressure submodel is capable of describing main-drainage and hysteretic saturation-path saturations for positive and negative oil–water capillary pressures. At high oil–water capillary pressures, an asymptote is approached as the water saturation approaches the residual water saturation. At low oil–water capillary pressures (i.e. negative), another asymptote is approached as the oil saturation approaches the residual oil saturation. Hysteresis in capillary pressure relations, including water entrapment, is modeled. Relative permeabilities are predicted using parameters that describe main-drainage capillary pressure relations and accounting for how water and oil are distributed throughout the pore spaces of a porous medium with mixed wettability. The capillary pressure submodel is tested against published experimental data, and an example of how to use the relative permeability/capillary pressure model for a hypothetical saturation-path scenario involving several imbibition and drainage paths is given. Features of the model are also explained. Results suggest that the proposed model is capable of predicting relative permeability/capillary pressure characteristics of porous media mixed wettability.  相似文献

When regions of three-phase flow arise in an oil reservoir, each of the flow parameters, i.e. capillary pressures and relative permeabilities, are generally functions of two phase saturations and depend on the wettability state. The idea of this work is to generate consistent pore-scale based three-phase capillary pressures and relative permeabilities. These are then used as input to a 1-D continuum core- or reservoir-scale simulator. The pore-scale model comprises a bundle of cylindrical capillary tubes, which has a distribution of radii and a prescribed wettability state. Contrary to a full pore-network model, the bundle model allows us to obtain the flow functions for the saturations produced at the continuum-scale iteratively. Hence, the complex dependencies of relative permeability and capillary pressure on saturation are directly taken care of. Simulations of gas injection are performed for different initial water and oil saturations, with and without capillary pressures, to demonstrate how the wettability state, incorporated in the pore-scale based flow functions, affects the continuum-scale displacement patterns and saturation profiles. In general, wettability has a major impact on the displacements, even when capillary pressure is suppressed. Moreover, displacement paths produced at the pore-scale and at the continuum-scale models are similar, but they never completely coincide.  相似文献

For two-phase immiscible fluid flows a generalized Darcy's law is written in invariant tensor form for crystallographic point symmetry groups and anisotropic textures. The representation of the phase permeability coefficient tensors and the structure of the expressions for the relative phase permeabilities are analyzed for all symmetry groups. The relation between the phase and absolute permeability coefficient tensors is specified by a fourth-rank tensor with the external symmetry coinciding with external symmetry of the phase permeability tensors. It is shown that the external symmetry of the phase permeability coefficient tensors can differ from the external symmetry of the absolute permeability tensor. For triclinic and monoclinic symmetry groups it is shown that the phase permeability coefficient tensors may not be coaxial with each other and with the absolute permeability tensor; moreover, the directions of the principal axes of the phase permeability coefficient tensors can depend on the saturation.  相似文献

In three-phase flow, the macroscopic constitutive relations of capillary pressure and relative permeability as functions of saturation depend in a complex manner on the underlying pore occupancies. These three-phase pore occupancies depend in turn on the interfacial tensions, the pore sizes and the degree of wettability of the pores, as characterised by the cosines of the oil–water contact angles. In this work, a quasi-probabilistic approach is developed to determine three-phase pore occupancies in media where the degree of wettability varies from pore to pore. Given a set of fluid and rock properties, a simple but novel graphical representation is given of the sizes and oil–water contact angles underlying three-phase occupancies for every allowed combination of capillary pressures. The actual phase occupancies are then computed using the contact angle probability density function. Since a completely accessible porous medium is studied, saturations, capillary pressures, and relative permeabilities are uniquely related to the pore occupancies. In empirical models of three-phase relative permeability it is of central importance whether a phase relative permeability depends only on its own saturation and how this relates to the corresponding two-phase relative permeability (if at all). The new graphical representation of pore sizes and wettabilities clearly distinguishes all three-phase pore occupancies with respect to these saturation-dependencies. Different types of saturation-dependencies may occur, which are shown to appear in ternary saturation diagrams of iso-relative permeability curves as well, thus guiding empirical approaches. However, for many saturation combinations three-phase and two-phase relative permeabilities can not be linked. In view of the latter, the present model has been used to demonstrate an approach for three-phase flow modelling on the basis of the underlying pore-scale processes, in which three-phase relative permeabilities are computed only along the actual flow paths. This process-based approach is used to predict an efficient strategy for oil recovery by simultaneous water-alternating-gas (SWAG) injection.  相似文献

This study concerns with the microscopic and macroscopic fluid distribution and flow behavior during water alternating solvent (WAS) injection process to heavy oil using micromodel generated from thin section of a real rock which has rarely attended in the available literature. In this study, a one-quarter five-spot glass micromodel was deployed to examine the effect of flow media topology on microscopic displacements as well as macroscopic efficiency of WAS process. The micromodel was initially saturated with the heavy oil, and then the hydrocarbon solvent and water were injected alternately into it. The observations confirmed that WAS injection scheme is an effective method for the recovery of the significant amount of residual oil. Using solvent as the leading batch in WAS scheme can really improve the oil recovery by increasing the amount of microscopic sweep efficiency in flow paths, where the molecular diffusion in solvent–heavy oil system occurs. Presence of connate water in WAS scheme can improve the recovery efficiency especially at higher water saturations. Heterogeneity of the medium caused the water to be distributed better in the medium, but the amount of residual oil in the flow area is going to be increased. Small precipitates of asphaltene particles due to solvent injection and localized entrapment of the oil due to heterogeneity effects, water blockage, and deadend pores were observed mainly in this process. The results of this study reveals the pore scale events in WAS injection process and will be helpful for developing reliable simulation models.  相似文献

Evaluation of relative permeability coefficients is one of the key steps in reliable simulation of two-phase flow in porous media. An extensive body of work exists on evaluation of these coefficients for two-phase flow under pressure gradient. Oil transport under an applied electrical gradient in porous media is also governed by the principles of two-phase flow, but is less understood. In this paper, relative permeability coefficients under applied electric field are evaluated for a specific case of two- phase fluid flow in water-wet porous media, where the second fluid phase is oil. It is postulated that the viscous drag on the oil phase, exerted by the electro-osmotic flow of the water phase, is responsible for the transport of oil in the absence of a pressure gradient. Reliable prediction of the flow patterns necessitates accurate representation and determination of the relative permeability coefficients under the electrical gradient. The contribution of each phase to the flow is represented mathematically, and the relative permeability coefficients are evaluated through electro-osmotic flow measurements conducted on oil bearing rock cores.  相似文献

The single and double phase macroscopic permeabilities of bimodal reconstructed porous media have been studied. The structure of these bimodal media is characterized by the micro and macroporosities (vug system) and by the micro and macrocorrelation lengths l p and l v. For a single phase, if the vugular system does not percolate, it is shown that the absolute permeability K mainly depends on l p and very little on the other parameters. However, when the vugs percolate, K is also influenced by the density of vugs. For double phase calculations (in strong wettability conditions), it is shown that a vuggy percolating system affects mainly the nonwetting phase permeability. Moreover, the relative permeabilities for a nonpercolating vuggy system are only slightly influenced by the porosity distribution. These predictions are in good agreement with some experimental data obtained with limestones.  相似文献

We develop a theory based on relative entropy to show the uniqueness and L 2 stability (up to a translation) of extremal entropic Rankine?CHugoniot discontinuities for systems of conservation laws (typically 1-shocks, n-shocks, 1-contact discontinuities and n-contact discontinuities of large amplitude) among bounded entropic weak solutions having an additional trace property. The existence of a convex entropy is needed. No BV estimate is needed on the weak solutions considered. The theory holds without smallness conditions. The assumptions are quite general. For instance, strict hyperbolicity is not needed globally. For fluid mechanics, the theory handles solutions with vacuums.  相似文献

A simple process-based model of three-phase displacement cycles for both spreading and non-spreading oils in a mixed-wet capillary bundle model is presented. All possible pore filling sequences are determined analytically and it is found that the number of pore occupancies that are permitted on physical grounds is actually quite restricted. For typical non-spreading gas/oil/water systems, only two important cases need to be considered to see all types of allowed qualitative behaviour for non-spreading oils. These two cases correspond to whether water or gas is the intermediate-wetting phase in oil-wet pores as determined by the corresponding contact angles, that is, cos o gw > 0 or cos o gw < 0, respectively. Analysis of the derived pore occupancies leads to the establishment of a number of relationships showing the phase dependencies of three-phase capillary pressures and relative permeabilities in mixed-wet systems. It is shown that different relationships hold in different regions of the ternary diagram and the morphology of these regions is discussed in terms of various rock/fluid properties. Up to three distinct phase-dependency regions may appear for a non-spreading oil and this reduces to two for a spreading oil. In each region, we find that only one phase may be specified as being the intermediate-wetting phase and it is only the relative permeability of this phase and the capillary pressure between the two remaining phases that depend upon more than one saturation. Given the simplicity of the model, a remarkable variety of behaviour is predicted. Moreover, the emergent three-phase saturation-dependency regions developed in this paper should prove useful in: (a) guiding improved empirical approaches of how two-phase data should be combined to obtain the corresponding three-phase capillary pressures and relative permeabilities; and (b) determining particular displacement sequences that require additional investigation using a more complete process-based 3D pore-scale network model.  相似文献

Many heavy oil reservoirs contain discontinuous shales which act as barriers or baffles to flow. However, there is a lack of fundamental understanding about how the shale geometrical characteristics affect the reservoir performance, especially during polymer flooding of heavy oils. In this study, a series of polymer injection processes have been performed on five-spot glass micromodels with different shale geometrical characteristics that are initially saturated with the heavy oil. The available geological characteristics from one of the Iranian oilfields were considered for the construction of the flow patterns by using a controlled-laser technology. Oil recoveries as a function of pore volumes of injected fluid were determined from analysis of continuously recorded images during the experiments. We observed a clear bypassing of displacing fluid which results in premature breakthrough of injected fluid due to the shale streaks. Moreover, the results showed a decrease of oil recovery when shales’ orientation, length, spacing, distance of the shale from production well, and density of shales increased. In contrast, an increase of shale discontinuity or distance of the shale streak from the injection well increased oil recovery. The obtained experimental data have also been used for developing and validating a numerical model where good matching performance has been observed between our experimental observations and simulation results. Finally, the role of connate water saturation during polymer flooding in systems containing flow barriers has been illustrated using pore level visualizations. The microscopic observations confirmed that besides the effect of shale streaks as heterogeneity in porous medium, when connate water is present, the trapped water demonstrates another source of disturbance and causes additional perturbations to the displacement interface leading to more irregular fingering patterns especially behind the shale streaks and also causes a reduction of ultimate oil recovery. This study reveals the application of glass micromodel experiments for studying the effects of barriers on oil recovery and flow patterns during EOR processes and also may provide a set of benchmark data for recovery of oil by immiscible polymer flood around discontinuous shales.  相似文献

In this paper it will be shown that in neural systems with a recurrent architecture, the traditional concepts of knowledge representation cannot be applied any more; no stable representational relationship of reference can be found. That is why a redefinition of the relationship between the states of the environment and the internal representational states is proposed. Studying the dynamics of recurrent neural systems reveals that the goal of representation is no longer to map the environment as accurately as possible to the representation system (e.g., to symbols). It is suggested that it is more appropriate to look at neural systems as physical dynamical devices embodying the (transformation) knowledge for sensorimotor integration and for generating adequate behavior enabling the organism's survival. As an implication the representation is determined not only by the environment, but highly depends on the organization, structure, and constraints of the representation system as well as the sensory/motor systems which are embedded in a particular body structure. This leads to a system relative concept of representation. By transforming recurrent neural networks into the domain of finite automata, the dynamics as well as the epistemological implications become more clear. In recurrent neural systems a type of balance between the autonomy of the representation and the environmental dependence/influence emerges. This not only affects the traditional concept of knowledge representation, but has also implications for the understanding of semantics, language, communication, and even science.  相似文献
