The problem of statistical inference based on a partial measurement (coarse-graining) requires the specification of an a priori distribution. We reformulate the ordinary theory such as to encompass systematically a wide range of a priori distributions (relative coarse-graining). This is done in a mathematical setting which admits an interpretation in both classical probability and quantum mechanics. The formalism is illustrated in a few simple examples, such as the die whose geometrical shape is known, the spin in thermal equilibrium with an unknown reservoir, and the position measurement of a one-dimensional particle. It is shown that some of the limitations of the usual theory are a consequence of the fact that it is restricted to equidistributed (symmetric) a priori states.  相似文献

Singing teachers sometimes characterize voice quality in terms of "forward" and "backward" placement. In view of our traditional knowledge about voice production it is hard to explain any possible acoustic or articulatory differences between the voices so "placed." The analysis of the teachers' expert opinions demonstrates that, in general, a voice placed "forward" indicates a desirable quality that students should attain by the end of their studies. Productions that were perceived as "forward" and "backward" were selected from the listening test. The acoustic analysis of those productions reveals that the voice quality in the case of "forward" placement correlates with higher frequencies of the second (F2) and third (F3) formants, as well as with a more salient "singer's formant" in the voice. The five basic vowels were included in the investigation.  相似文献

From covalently linked porphyrin quinones, dissolved in reversed micellar solutions, porphyrin radical cations and semiquinone radical anions can be generated photochemically. At pH 7 of the water pool the radical species are rather short-lived and can thus only be observed duringin-situ light irradiation (optical pumping) of the sample. Different polarization patterns are observed in different types of micelles, e.g., CTAB cationic or Triton X-100 neutral reversed micelles. Specifically, in the former absorptive (either Boltzmann relaxed or enhanced absorptive) spectra are obtained, whereas in the latter both species (porphyrin radical cation and semiquinone radical anion) occur in emission. Complete emission is indicative of a strong triplet mechanism.  相似文献

An initial statistical analysis has been performed on the helical parameters for the solution structures of three DNA duplexes recently solved in this laboratory by proton NMR. Local conformations in these structures belong to the B family of forms; nevertheless they display a strong sequence-dependent heterogeneity akin to that found in single crystals and by theoretical calculations. However, average helical parameters as well as their variations are quite different for short DNA fragments in solution and in crystal. Average helical twist in three NMR-refined oligonucleotides is 34.6°, in remarkable agreement with independent solution-state data, while helical twist is 36° for DNA in crystals. Other characteristic features of solution DNA conformations are negative slide, systematically open minor groove (for almost all sequences), and decreased helical rise. The latter, rather unexpected finding, is correlated with a surprisingly strong non-flatness of Watson-Crick base pairs. Deviations of base pairs from planarity proved to be a significant source of conformational variability; of particular importance is base stagger, which is often missed in structural analysis of DNA. Several new structural parameters have been introduced for dinucleotide steps, characterizing non-planar geometries of constituent base pairs; these parameters show a significant degree of correlation with traditional step parameters (twist, tillt roll, shift, slide, rise). Many sequence-dependent features are observed in solution structures; variation of roll and slide parameters occurs according to “Calladine’s rules”, while variation of helical twist appears to oppose them. However, a larger set of solution structures is needed to complete the analysis of sequence dependence of DNA conformation.  相似文献

We further develop a noncommutative model unifying quantum mechanics and general relativity proposed in Gen. Rel. Grav. (36, 111–126 (2004)). Generalized symmetries of the model are defined by a groupoid given by the action of a finite group on a space E. The geometry of the model is constructed in terms of suitable (noncommutative) algebras on . We investigate observables of the model, especially its position and momentum observables. This is not a trivial thing since the model is based on a noncommutative geometry and has strong nonlocal properties. We show that, in the position representation of the model, the position observable is a coderivation of a corresponding coalgebra, coparallelly to the well-known fact that the momentum observable is a derivation of the algebra. We also study the momentum representation of the model. It turns out that, in the case of the algebra of smooth, quickly decreasing functions on , the model in its quantum sector is nonlocal, i.e., there are no nontrivial coderivations of the corresponding coalgebra, whereas in its gravity sector such coderivations do exist. I present a new 33-ray proof of the Kochen and Specker no-go hidden variable theorem in 3, based on a classical tautology that corresponds to a contingent quantum proposition in 3 proposed by Kurt Schütte in an unpublished letter to Specker in 1965. 1 discuss the relation of this proof to a 31-ray proof by Conway and Kochen, and to a 33-ray proof by Peres.  相似文献

As is known, a charge in a gravitational field experiences a (gravitationally-induced) self-interaction force (self-force) only in curved space-times (in any reference frame), but not in the accelerated frames in flat spacetimes. Therefore, the presence of any self-force indicates, from a formal point of view, a violation of the Strong Equivalence Principle (SEP); as a result, observability of the self-force in the validity domain of classical electrodynamics (CE) means observability of the related violation of SEP. In this paper we investigate the observability of the self-force on a charge at rest on the symmetry axis in a Kerr spacetime, as recently calculated in a paper by the same authors, in the validity domain of CE. Analysis shows that, in the validity domain of CE, no effect of the self-force is observable outside the Schwarzschild radius. In contrast, some effect is observable for very large values of the angular momentum, in a small neighbourhood of the turning point (where a reversal of the tidal forces direction takes place), between the outer horizon and the Schwarzschild radius. This is the only case we have found where SEP fails because of the self-force.  相似文献

Photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) studies were performed on the splitting ofcis,syn 2′-deoxythymidylyl-(3′→5′)-2′-deoxythymidine cyclobutane dimer (cs-dTp dT), using reduced flavin as a sensitizer. This system serves as a model for the light-induced repair mechanism of thymine dimers in DNA by the enzyme photolyase. The CIDNP spectrum shows enhanced absorption of the two C6-H protons of the corresponding monomer dTpdT, which demonstrates that a thymine radical anion is involved in the splitting of the dimer. This is supported by a similar CIDNP spectrum that is obtained with the electron-donorN α-acetyl tryptophan as a sensitizer. This result suggests that the light-induced splitting of thymine dimers in DNA by photolyase also proceedsvia the thymine radical anion. The small difference in intensity of the two CIDNP signals belonging to the C6-H protons shows that the unpaired electron in the monomer radical has a slight preference for the thymine moiety at the 5′ terminus.  相似文献

Using simple known methods and results of classical perturbation theory, especially those due to Nekhoroshev and Neishtadt, we study the energy exchanges between the rotational and the translational degrees of freedom in a particular model representing the planar motion of a rigid body in a bounded analytic potential. We prove that, if the angular velocity is initially large, then the energy exchanges are small,O( –1), for times growing exponentially with, |t|exp. We also deduce that in a scattering process from a (smooth) potential barrier, the overall change in the rotational energy of the incoming body is exponentially small in, exp(–. The results are interpreted in the light of an old conjecture by Boltzmann and Jeans on the existence of very large time scales for equilibrium in statistical systems containing high-frequency degrees of freedom (purely classical freezing of the high-frequency degrees of freedom); the rotating object is, in this interpretation, a (classical) molecule, which moves in an external field, or collides with the wall of a container. Two different limits of large are considered, namely the limit of large rotational energy, and (as is interesting for the molecular interpretation) the limit of point mass, at finite rotational energy.  相似文献

We study the diffusion of a quantum heavy particle moving in a one dimensional strongly corrugated periodic potential, and interacting with a phonon bath.By integrating out the phonons degrees of freedom we derive an effective action functional for the particle, which includes a non-local self-interacting term whose strength is proved to be the classical friction coefficient .Using an instanton approach we express the velocity-velocity correlation function, and thus the mobility, of the brownian particle in terms of the charge density-density correlation function of a classical Coulomb gas, which in the strong corrugation limit has a very low fugacity.By making a virial expansion in the gas fugacity we evaluate the static mobility of the brownian particle as a function of the temperature, and we find two different behaviours: a diffusive behaviour at low friction, where decreases withT, and a localised behaviour at high friction, where increases withT.The cross-over between the two régimes takes place at a critical friction 0, corresponding to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for the Coulomb gas.  相似文献

This paper discusses the simplest first passage time problems for random walks and diffusion processes on a line segment. When a diffusing particle moves in a time-varying field, use of the adjoint equation does not lead to any simplification in the calculation of moments of the first passage time as is the case for diffusion in a time-invariant field. We show that for a discrete random walk in the presence of a sinusoidally varying field there is a resonant frequency * for which the mean residence time on the line segment is a minimum. It is shown that for a random walk on a line segment of lengthL the mean residence time goes likeL 2 for largeL when *, but when =* the dependence is proportional toL. The results of our simulation are numerical, but can be regarded as exact. Qualitatively similar results are shown to hold for diffusion processes by a perturbation expansion in powers of a dimensionless velocity. These results are extended to higher values of this parameter by a numerical solution of the forward equation.  相似文献

It is shown that there are restrictions on the possible changes of topology of space sections of the universe if this topology change takes place in a compact region which has a Lorentzian metric and spinor structure. In particular, it is impossible to create a single wormhole or attach a single handle to a spacetime but it is kinematically possible to create such wormholes in pairs. Another way of saying this is that there is a 2 invariant for a closed oriented 3-manifold which determines whether can be the spacelike boundary of a compact manifoldM which admits a Lorentzian metric and a spinor structure. We evaluate this invariant in terms of the homology groups of and find that it is the mod2 Kervaire semi-characteristic.  相似文献

考古发掘表明,我国新石器晚期已经大量使用"白灰面"建筑涂料,这种建筑涂料,不仅坚固、美观、卫生,而且有一定的防潮作用,考古学家推测,这种建筑涂料很可能就是我国早期人工烧制的石灰.为此,本工作采用红外光谱分析方法,对取自陶寺遗址的"白灰面"、"白条石"做了红外光谱的对比研究.结果表明,"白灰面"与"白条石"红外光谱的v2/v4比值明显不同,反应了二者碳酸钙晶体的无序度有较大区别,从而说明经过煅烧而得到的白灰面,即人工烧制的石灰是町以通过红外光谱方法鉴定的,这为我国行灰起源研究提供了一种简单易行的判别方法.此外,本工作还借助显微镜与红外光谱分析方法研究了白灰面中掺和料,结果表明白灰面中的掺和料为纤维素类物质.  相似文献

A short review of theoretical and experimental studies concerning the photoexcited florescence and Raman scattering of light for a substance in a space containing small material bodies is presented. Calculations of the radiativetransition probability for atoms (molecules) in the vicinity of bodies with a size much smaller than the light wavelength are performed. The probabilities of the singlephoton and doublephoton transitions are shown to increase by factors of 9 and 81 in the vicinity of a nanosize sphere with dielectric constant ||\ 1. The probability of a radiative transition in the vicinity of the vertex of a conic needle bearing up against a plane (both with || 1) increases by factors of (/R in)2 and (/R in)4 for singlephoton and doublephoton transitions, respectively (R in is the curvature radius for the needle vertex). This theoretical result is suggested as an explanation of the effect of increasing the radiation process intensity in the experiments carried out in the studies cited below.  相似文献

We discuss the relationship between the bulk-boundary correspondence in Rehren’s algebraic holography (and in other ‘fixed-background’, QFT-based, approaches to holography) and in mainstream string-theoretic ‘Maldacena AdS/CFT’. Especially, we contrast the understanding of black-hole entropy from the point of view of QFT in curved spacetime—in the framework of ’t Hooft’s ‘brick wall’ model—with the understanding based on Maldacena AdS/CFT. We show that the brick-wall modification of a Klein–Gordon field in the Hartle–Hawking–Israel state on $1+2$ dimensional Schwarzschild AdS has a well-defined boundary limit with the same temperature and entropy as the brick-wall-modified bulk theory. One of our main purposes is to point out a close connection, for general AdS/CFT situations, between the puzzle raised by Arnsdorf and Smolin regarding the relationship between Rehren’s algebraic holography and mainstream AdS/CFT and the puzzle embodied in the ‘complementarity principle’ proposed by Mukohyama and Israel in their work on the brick-wall approach to black hole entropy. Working on the assumption that similar results will hold for bulk QFT other than the Klein–Gordon field and for Schwarzschild AdS in other dimensions, and recalling the first author’s proposed resolution to the Mukohyama–Israel puzzle based on his ‘matter–gravity entanglement hypothesis’, we argue that, in Maldacena AdS/CFT, the algebra of the boundary CFT is isomorphic only to a proper subalgebra of the bulk algebra, albeit (at non-zero temperature) the (GNS) Hilbert spaces of bulk and boundary theories are still the ‘same’—the total bulk state being pure, while the boundary state is mixed (thermal). We also argue from the finiteness of its boundary (and hence, on our assumptions, also bulk) entropy at finite temperature, that the Rehren dual of the Maldacena boundary CFT cannot itself be a QFT and must, instead, presumably be something like a string theory.  相似文献

Some criteria of the approximate transitivity in the terms of Mackey actions and product cocycles are proved. The Mackey action constructed by an amenable type II or III transformation group G and a 1-cocycle × , where is the Radon–Nikodym cocycle while is an arbitrary 1-cocycle with values in a locally compact separable group A, is approximately transitive (AT) if and only if the pair (G,(, )) is weakly equivalent to a product odometer supplied with a product cocycle. Besides, in the case when the given AT action from the very beginning was a range of a type II action and a nontransient cocycle, then this cocycle turns out to be cohomologous to a -product cocycle. An example is constructed that shows that it is necessary to consider the double Mackey actions since they can not be reduced to the single ones.  相似文献

Maxwell's equations are formulated as a relativistic Schrödinger-like equation for a single photon of a given helicity. The probability density of the photon satisfies an equation of continuity. The energy eigenvalue problem gives both positive and negative energies. The Feynman concept of antiparticles is applied here to show that the negative-energy states going backward in time (t –t) give antiphoton states, which are photon states with the opposite helicity. For a given mode, properties of a photon, such as energy, linear momentum, total angular momentum, orbital angular momentum, and spin are equivalent in both classical electromagnetic field theory and quantum theory. The single-photon Schrödinger equation is field (or second) quantized in a gauge-invariant way to obtain the quantum field theory of many photons. This approach treats the quantization of electromagnetic radiation in a way that parallels the quantization of material particles and, thus, provides a unified treatment.  相似文献

The role of the release burst as a cue to the perception of stop consonants following [s] was investigated in a series of studies. Experiment 1 demonstrated that silent closure duration and burst duration can be traded as cues for the "say"-"stay" distinction. Experiment 2 revealed a similar trading relation between closure duration and burst amplitude. Experiments 3 and 4 suggested, perhaps surprisingly, that absolute, not relative, burst amplitude is important. Experiment 5 demonstrated that listener's sensitivity to bursts in a labeling task is at least equal to their sensitivity in a burst detection task. Experiments 6 and 7 replicated the trading relation between closure duration and burst amplitude for labial stops in the "slit"-"split" and "slash"-"splash" distinctions, although burst amplification, in contrast to attenuation, had no effect. All experiments revealed that listeners are remarkably sensitive to the presence of even very weak release bursts.  相似文献

Gravitational bags contain a domain wall outside of which they look compact, but inside there is a solution in which, in certain circumstances, the extra dimensions explode. We show that it is energetically possible for a collapse of the domain wall to lead to the creation of a huge universe containing a large quantity of entropy. This can proceed via quantum tunneling through a wormhole region.This paper is based on the essay entitled Wormholes, Entropy and Extra-dimensions, which received an honorable mention from the Gravity Research Foundation in 1987.  相似文献

We review studies of an evolution operator for a discrete Langevin equation with a strongly hyperbolic classical dynamics and a Gaussian noise. The leading eigenvalue of yields a physically measurable property of the dynamical system, the escape rate from the repeller. The spectrum of the evolution operator in the weak noise limit can be computed in several ways. A method using a local matrix representation of the operator allows to push the corrections to the escape rate up to order eight in the noise expansion parameter. These corrections then appear to form a divergent series. Actually, via a cumulant expansion, they relate to analogous divergent series for other quantities, the traces of the evolution operators n. Using an integral representation of the evolution operator , we then investigate the high order corrections to the latter traces. Their asymptotic behavior is found to be controlled by sub-dominant saddle points previously neglected in the perturbative expansion, and to be ultimately described by a kind of trace formula.  相似文献
