Symposium on the Polymerization of Cyclic Ethers and Sulfides

Abstract

Ring-opening polymerization of cyclic ethers and sulfides has long been exciting broad interest as a distinct area of specialization. Often it was useful to include discussions of these studies as part of other areas such as anionic or cationic polymerization However, these ring-opening polymerizations have likewise been the sole subject of successful symposia The time lapse since the previous such ACS sponsored symposium and the worldwide effort since then amply justified this American Chemical Society sponsored symposium held in Boston, Massachusetts, April 11 and 12, 1972. Judging from its reception, I felt it was a successful. and timely symposium. I think this attests to the considerable amount of good work being done in the area and to the advances that are being made. Not only are there a number of important products on the market based on this chemistry, but also considerable basic chemical knowledge has evolved, leading in turn to still more products.     

Cheminformatics aspects of high throughput screening: from robots to models: symposium summary

The “Cheminformatics aspects of high throughput screening (HTS): from robots to models” symposium was part of the computers in chemistry technical program at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Denver, Colorado during the fall of 2011. This symposium brought together researchers from high throughput screening centers and molecular modelers from academia and industry to discuss the integration of currently available high throughput screening data and assays with computational analysis. The topics discussed at this symposium covered the data-infrastructure at various academic, hospital, and National Institutes of Health-funded high throughput screening centers, the cheminformatics and molecular modeling methods used in real world examples to guide screening and hit-finding, and how academic and non-profit organizations can benefit from current high throughput screening cheminformatics resources. Specifically, this article also covers the remarks and discussions in the open panel discussion of the symposium and summarizes the following talks on “Accurate Kinase virtual screening: biochemical, cellular and selectivity”, “Selective, privileged and promiscuous chemical patterns in high-throughput screening” and “Visualizing and exploring relationships among HTS hits using network graphs”.     

Survey of Recent Progress in Polymerization Studies of Selected Heterocycles

Abstract

The last symposium exclusively on the polymerization of cyclic ethers and sulfides held at an ACS meeting took place in Atlantic City in September 1965 [11. This survey is intended to give a general overview of the areas of active research since then and to summarize the progress that has been made in these areas. The polymerizations of cyclic ethers and cyclic sulfides are compared and contrasted. The influence of the size of the heterocyclic ring on the polymerization is described. In addition, the survey is intended to anticipate in a general way what the other participants in this symposium will discuss in detail so that the conference will seem more a single unit rather than a series of disconnected papers. As usual, limitations of time and space compel a certain selection process and no attempt has been made to be all-inclusive.     

Impact of molecule-based magnetic materials: A critical outlook

A critical outlook of the field of molecular magnetic materials is presented. This article is inspired by an international symposium devoted to the “Design, Characterization and Modelling of Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials (DCM4-II)” that took place at Strasbourg (France), from May 28th to June 1st, within the E-MRS 2007 Spring Meeting (Symposium R) organized by the European Materials Research Society in collaboration with the European Science Foundation. A series of papers linked to this symposium are published in this issue and in the previous issue (Volume 11, Issue 4) of Solid State Sciences.

Impact of the detector energy resolution on the performance of MGA and MGAU isotopic codes

Nondestructive measurements of γ-ray and X-ray emissions are often made to characterize special nuclear materials. Various computer codes are available to determine the relative isotopic composition of uranium or plutonium (along with certain other associated nuclides) from analysis of the spectra resulting from such measurements. MGA (Gunnink, Proceedings of the 9th ESARDA symposium on safeguards and nuclear management 167, 1987) and MGAU (Gunnink et al., Proceedings of the IAEA symposium on international safeguards 541, 1994) are among the major isotopic codes. The purpose of this study was to investigate MGA and MGAU performance versus energy resolution of the counting system.     

The Hitchhiker's guide to quality assurance

A report is given on a 2-day symposium “The Hitchhikers Guide to Quality Assurance” held in Brisbane Australia, in 2005. More than 100 representatives of field laboratories attended this educational exercise organised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.     

Catalysis in Korea

A brief history of catalysis community in Korea was reviewed together with examples of catalysts and catalytic processes developed by Korean industries. The Korea–Japan symposium on catalysis was introduced as one of successful examples of bilateral symposia co-organized by Korea.     

The Contribution of Carl (Speed) Marvel to Polymer Science

It is an exceptional honor and privilege for me to contribute to this special symposium “Polymer Synthesis-The 1980's”, and lam very much obliged to Eli Pearce for giving me the opportunity to present to you a short report on the life and on the extraordinary accomplishments of our new Honorary Doctor of Sciences. When, about a year ago a group of us thought that our Polymer Research Institute should recognize Professor Marvel's outstanding contribution to polymer science in an unusual manner, it was felt that a special symposium should be organized in his honor and that he should receive an Honorary Degree of Science at this occasion. The conferment of such a degree is, of course, a matter of the faculty, but our Provost, Professor Donaruma, succeeded to overcome all difficulties and we were able to issue the invitation for this symposium which, to our great satisfaction, is being attended by such a large group of friends and admirers of our honoree. A few who would have liked to be here were unable to come but sent letters with the expression of their sincere regrets to be absent and of their congratulations. I am giving these letters to Professor Marvel; they are signed by Ed Jefferson, Dick Heckert, Paul Flory, and Frank Press. But now to the topic of my address.     

Methods for describing open‐shell systems: Following the trail of Rosa Caballol's research

On the occasion of the celebration of Prof. Rosa Caballol's 65's birthday, a symposium was organized by the Quantum Chemistry Group of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain) under the title “Theoretical Chemistry in Spain told by women.” The symposium gave a representative illustration of the research in theoretical chemistry in Spain, which is not only very diverse, but also in many areas at the forefront of the field. In this article, we summarize the contributions made by Rosa Caballol and coworkers. Emphasis lies on the developments of wave function based methods to accurately describe electron correlation effects in systems with unpaired electrons. Besides discussing some illustrative applications, we will also explore the limits of the existing methods and outline the perspectives of how one can possibly overcome them. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

New Developments in the Rayon Industry

Abstract

In August 1988 the International Symposium of Macromolecules (MACRO 88) was held at the International Conference Hall located in the northeastern part of Kyoto. At the same time, at the National Museum in the southeastern part of the city, an exhibition of Treasures of Ancient Egypt, including rolls of papyrus (the origin of paper) was displayed. At the symposium, Prof. Nishijima [l], President of Kyoto University, gave an address in which he stated “… I feel there is some- thing more than mere coincidence that both this symposium of MACRO 88 and the exhibition of Egyptian Art and Technology are held at the same time in the North and South of Kyoto. The civilization of 5000 years ago meets most recent develop- ments of integrated science and technology as MACRO 88. It is the accession over the span of millennia.”     

Report On ‘Examples in Modular Chemistry’

This issue of The Chemical Educator is devoted to the Proceedings from a workshop symposium that I organized for the weekend of May 10–11, 1997. The two-day event was held in the Willard H. Dow Chemical Sciences laboratory building on the central campus of The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.     

Physiological reference values: a shared business? Report of the second European symposium on clinical laboratory and in vitro diagnostics industry

The Catalan Association of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, with the support of its corporative members, organized the second European symposium devoted to physiological reference values, in Barcelona. The objectives were: (i) to discuss ways to develop a common strategy among clinical laboratories and the in vitro diagnostic (IVD) industry for the generation of physiological reference values related to biological quantities of medical interest; and (ii) to establish consensus between both groups regarding the interpretation of the requirements related to physiological reference values contained in the European (EU) Directive 98/79-EC and in the EN-ISO 15189:2003 standard. The symposium was divided into four parts in which different aspects of the reference values were discussed: legal and normative aspects, alternatives to the production of own reference values, methodology, and diffusion and teaching. The main conclusions were the need to clarify the requirements described by the EU Directive 98/79-EC and EN-ISO 15189:2003 regarding reference values, and the need for cooperation between industry, clinical laboratories, and health authorities to achieve common reference intervals, including multicentric reference intervals.

The metrological infrastructure for gas analysis

This presentation to the Metrology in Chemistry symposium held in October 2004 in Beijing, describes the metrological infrastructure for gas analysis. The inputs from National Metrology Institutes, industry, standardisation and accreditation bodies, and organisers of proficiency testing schemes are briefly described. Metrological traceability: I make it 42; you make it 42; but is it the same 42?

The paper reproduces a talk given at a 2-day symposium on quality assurance in chemistry held in Brisbane, Australia in 2005. Intended for an audience of analysts in the field, the theme of the symposium drew inspiration from the series of books by Douglas Adams “The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy”. An introduction to basic concepts of metrological traceability is followed by a discussion of practical steps to ensure metrological traceability of field measurement results. The relationship between metrological traceability and comparability of measurement results is discussed. To achieve metrological traceability in the field, the use of appropriate certified reference materials for calibration is recommended. Examples of atmospheric carbon dioxide and roadside breathalyzer measurements are given.

Computer-aided drug design: the next 20 years

This perspectives article has been taken from a talk the author gave at the symposium in honor of Yvonne C. Martin's retirement, held at the American Chemical Society spring meeting in Chicago on March 25, 2007. The talk was intended as a somewhat lighthearted attempt to gaze into the future; inevitably, in print, things will come across more seriously than was intended. As we all know-the past is rarely predictive of the future.     

X-Ray Investigations on Celluloses Grafted by the Thiocarbonation Method

It is a pleasure for me to contribute to the symposium held in honor of my colleague and old friend Vivian Stannett. The topic of this contribution is results of x-ray investigations on graft modified cellulose fibers.
