The use of fused silica SE-54 columns in the analysis of complex environmental samples by GC/MS was examined. Column performance was evaluated for the analysis of priority pollutant acid extractables on both an “acid conditioned” column and a “base/neutral conditioned” column. The largest change in column performance was noted when a single column was used to analyze B/N extractables followed by acid extractable priority pollutants. There was evidence of peak skewing, tailing, and loss of sensitivity. Nitrophenols could not be successfully chromatographed. The analysis of phenols on an acid conditioned column was within acceptable limits (peak shapes and accuracy).  相似文献

A quality control procedure for Fused Silica Capillary Column Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five Spectroscopy (FSCC GC/MS) was tested and shown to produce similar response factors at five laboratories. The average relative standard deviation (RSD) of interlaboratory response factors for fifty three compounds of environmental interest determined at each laboratory at nominal injected weights of 20, 100, and 200 ng was found to be 18.9% for four of the five laboratories which participated in this work. These data demonstrate that similar response factors can be attained in routine GC/MS measurements when adequate quality control is maintained.  相似文献

For clinical and environmental analyses utilizing capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), increased sensitivity and speed of analysis are highly desirable. These performance advantages are realized using a WCOT column of 100 μm i.d. as compared to the more conventional 200 μm i.d. capillary columns. The improved sensitivity of capillary direct GC/MS with the 100 μm i.d. column for the confirmation of drugs of abuse will be demonstrated. For environmental analysis, the superior efficiency and resolution of the 100 μm i.d. column can be employed for the separation of priority pollutants. This approach is more amenable to capillary direct GC/MS providing a more effective interface to the mass spectrometer. As a result improved sensitivity and a considerable decrease in analysis time is achieved over that obtained with the larger diameter environmental specialty phase columns.  相似文献

Further applications of fused silica capillary columns (FSCC) to the analysis of environmental samples are presented. The chromatographic behavior (RT, RRT) of organic compounds of environmental significance not listed as Consent Decree Priority Pollutants is investigated on an SE-54 FSCC. Retention indices (RRT) and mass spectral response factors (RF) are presented for a total of 28 compounds including a number of chloro- and nitro-substituted anilines, alkylpyridines, and alkylquinoline derivatives. The direct application of the FSCC/MS interface to the analysis of these compounds in actual environmental samples is presented, including vent emissions from a fungicide manufacturing process, and contaminated soil and water samples from two metropolitan Boston construction sites.  相似文献

A new analytical method is described for the determination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in sewage sludges using GC-ion trap-MS–MS. In this work, 16 organo-chlorine pesticides (OCPs) listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) as priority pollutants were separated and quantified. Sludge samples from three of Kuwaits wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Spiked sludge samples were extracted with a mixture of (1:1 v/v) dichloromethane (DCM)/hexane. The extracts were cleaned on a silica/aluminum oxide column, then transferred to a gel permeation chromatography (GPC) column, before undergoing further silica/aluminum oxide clean-up; the presence of OCPs was then confirmed by GC-ion trap-MS–MS. Three extraction techniques, soxtec, soxhlet, and pressurized liquid extractions were utilized, compared and validated using the spiked sludge samples. The methods were validated in term of accuracy (recovery) and precision (RSD). The method recovery values varyied from 76.1 to 92.9% for the three extraction techniques.  相似文献

A rapid, simple, and reliable method of solid-phase extraction (SPE) combined with gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry (MS) is developed for the analysis of a wide range of polarity of unknown organic pollutants in sewage. Wastewater samples are extracted by passing them through disposable C(18) cartridges, and the extracts are then analyzed by GC-MS. Different SPE parameters for ten organic compounds in the list of priority pollutants suggested by the China Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are studied, and their breakthrough volumes are determined. Extraction recoveries for the tested compounds are greater than 60%, except the recovery of 1,2-dichloroethane is 48%. The relative standard deviations are less than 7.8% (n = 3). The developed approach is successfully applied for the identification of organic components in a sewage sample. Over 220 organic pollutants are identified, with 5 of these present in the list of priority pollutants suggested by the U.S. EPA and 4 from the list by the China EPA.  相似文献

Environmental chemists have been challenged for over 30 years to analyse complex mixtures of halogenated organic pollutants like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated alkanes (PCAs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated furans (PCDD/Fs). Gas chromatography (GC) often proved to be the method of choice because of its high resolution. The recent developments in the field of comprehensive two-dimensional GC (GCxGC) show that this technique can provide much more information than conventional (single-column) GC. Large volume injection (e.g. by programmed temperature vaporiser, or on-column injection) can be employed for the injection of tens of microliters of sample extract, in that way substantially improving the detection limits. Electron-capture detection (ECD) is a sensitive detection method but unambiguous identification is not possible and misidentification easily occurs. Mass spectrometric (MS) detection substantially improves the identification and the better the resolution (as with MS/MS, time-of-flight (TOF) MS and high-resolution (HR)MS), the lower the chances of misidentification are. Unfortunately, this comes only with substantially higher investments and maintenance costs. Co-extracted lipids, sulphur and other interferences can disturb the GC separation and detection leading to unreliable results. Extraction, and more so, sample clean-up and fractionation, are crucial steps prior to the GC analysis of these pollutants. Recent developments in sample extraction and clean-up show that selective pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) is an effective and efficient extraction and clean-up technique that enables processing of multiple samples in less than 1h. Quality assurance tools such as interlaboratory studies and reference materials are very well established for PCDD/Fs and PCBs but the improvement of that infrastructure is needed for brominated flame retardants, PCAs and toxaphene.  相似文献

Headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography/ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC/ITMS/MS) was used for the analysis of 12 halobenzenes from soil samples. For MS/MS optimisation, the experiments were performed by precursor ion selection and software controlled operations. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) can be achieved by two different approaches, resonant and non-resonant excitation modes. Different results were obtained using the two approaches, and the resonant excitation mode was chosen as the best for all halobenzenes. Parameters such as the CID excitation amplitude, excitation RF storage level and CID bandwidth frequency were optimised to maximise the formation of halobenzene product ions. A 100-microm polydimethylsiloxane fibre was used for the isolation and preconcentration of the analytes. The HS-SPME/GC/ITMS/MS method was applied to the analysis of halobenzenes in an agricultural soil sample. The halobenzenes were quantified by standard addition, which led to good reproducibility (RSD between 4.7 and 9.2%) and detection limits in the low pg/g range. The method was validated by comparing the results with those obtained in a European inter-laboratory exercise.  相似文献

This study describes the use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in the characterization of polar glucuronide conjugates of doxylamine and their subsequent aglycones following deconjugation. Rat urinary extracts which contained doxylamine and both nonconjugated and conjugated doxylamine metabolites, were examined by HPLC before and after incubation with rat intestinal microflora. The subsequent deconjugated urinary metabolites and the nonconjugated products remaining in the urinary extracts were then isolated, acetylated, and assayed by GC/MS. Incubation with the intestinal microflora indicated that anaerobic bacteria were capable of effecting hydrolytic cleavage of these polar O-glucuronide metabolites of doxylamine and its demethylated products to their subsequent aglycones. GC/MS analysis was performed using a fused silica DB-5 GC column and was utilized for the identification of these deconjugated metabolites.  相似文献

Abstract

A method for automated determination of 73 organic pollutants in water is described. The compounds, which are key representatives for different types of pollutants are determined in two chromatographic runs. 11 halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons are determined using capillary GC equipped with electron capture detector. The remaining pollutants, representing both basic/neutral and acidic compounds are determined by using GC/MS combined with an automated search computer program. The majority of the compounds have a limit of quantitation at 1 ig/1 or lower. The precision of the GC method is in the range of 1.8% to 4.3%, with an average of 3.2%. The precision for compounds determined by GC/MS is in the range of 1% to 38%, with an average of 14%.

So far 30 water samples representing both polluted fjord areas as well as effluents from municipal treatment plants, refineries, petrochemical industries and metallurgic industries have been analysed. The method has been found to be an interesting alternative to traditional methods for monitoring water quality, and has demonstrated its potential both as a screening method for detecting “hot spots” as well as for routine monitoring of specific hazardous compounds.  相似文献

In this study, the feasibility of low-pressure gas chromatography (LP-GC) in conjunction with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, as a route towards fast pesticide residue analysis, was investigated. A Varian GC-MS system equipped with a mass spectrometer model 1200 was used. LP-GC-MS experiments were performed on a HP-5 10 m x 0.32 mm x 0.25 microm analytical column connected to a 2.5 m x 0.15 mm non-coated restriction precolumn at the inlet end. For comparison purposes conventional GC-MS analysis was performed on a RTX-5 30 m x 0.25 mm x 0.5 microm column. Under the optimized conditions the analysis time was reduced to 13.3 min with the LP-GC approach which corresponds to an almost threefold gain in speed versus the conventional GC (37 min). Despite the poorer separation power of the LP-GC column, the experiments conducted with tomato and onion extracts spiked with 78 pesticides proved that LP-GC-MS is of practical value to perform full scan screening analysis. Moreover, the rate of false negative results was higher in the case of conventional GC-MS while the LP-GC-MS enabled correct identification of pesticides at lower levels since the peaks were improved in both size and shape. Validation experiments were performed on a sample of 12 representative pesticides for comparison of performance characteristics of the LP-GC and GC approaches with mass spectrometer operated in scan, SIM and MS/MS mode. The LP-GC column set-up interfaced to the MS detector was found to be superior to the conventional GC with respect to obtained linearity, accuracy and precision parameters. Also, lower limits of detection in real extracts were achieved using the LP-GC approach. Finally, the LP-GC-MS/MS analysis of tomato samples with incurred pesticide residues demonstrated the applicability of the developed method for analysis of real samples.  相似文献

Geting bituminous coal (GBC) was exhaustively extracted with isometric carbon disulfide/acetone at ambient temperature to provide twenty extracts and a residue. The extracts were characterized by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and atmospheric pressure solids analysis probe time-of-flight mass spectrometry. GBC and its residue were observed with a scanning electron microscope. The total extract yield is ca. 11.5%. The GC/MS-detectable compounds in extract 1 can be classified into alkanes, cyclanes, arenes, cyclenes, and heteroatomic compounds, among which arenes are predominant. The number of detected compounds decreases and they have higher molecular masses with increasing extraction times. The combination of multiple techniques facilitates understanding the molecular composition of the extractable species from coals.  相似文献

The application of ultra-performance rapid resolution LC on a 1.8 microm particle-size column coupled with tandem MS (RRLC-MS/MS) is described for the analysis of amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) toxins in shellfish. Complete resolution among domoic acid (DA) and the isomers was achieved in less than 3 min. The method was intralaboratory validated for direct analysis of crude extracts without further cleanup. It showed LODs ranging from 0.05 to 0.09 mg/kg and a working range that complied with the current regulatory level for DA of 20 mg/kg, and with the level of 4.5 mg/kg recently proposed by the European Food Safety Authority. Confirmatory capabilities were demonstrated according to the Commission Decision 2002/657/EC criteria. The results obtained by RRLC-MS/MS agreed with those provided by the reference LC-UV method, both intralaboratory for the analysis of blind samples (R2 = 0.9751) and interlaboratory through participation in the proficiency test for ASP toxins during 2009 (z-score = -0.962 and 0.177 for low- and high-contaminated samples, respectively). RRLC-MS/MS provided fast analysis and additional confirmatory capabilities for direct analysis of crude extracts while the performance and reliability of the results were maintained, even in very complex matrixes.  相似文献

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are highly complex technical mixtures with thousands of isomers and numerous homologs. They are classified as priority candidate persistent organic pollutants under the Stockholm Convention for their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. Analyzing SCCPs is challenging because of the complexity of the mixtures. Chromatograms of SCCPs acquired using one-dimensional (1D) gas chromatography (GC) contain a large characteristic “peak” with a broad and unresolved profile. Comprehensive two-dimensional GC (GC×GC) shows excellent potential for separating complex mixtures. In this study, GC×GC coupled with micro electron capture detection (μECD) was used to separate and screen SCCPs. The chromatographic parameters, including the GC column types, oven temperature program, and modulation period, were systematically optimized. The SCCP congeners were separated into groups using a DM-1 column connected to a BPX-50 column. The SCCP congeners in technical mixtures were separated according to the number of chlorine substituents for a given carbon chain length and according to the number of carbon atoms plus chlorine atoms for different carbon chain lengths. A fish tissue sample was analyzed to illustrate the feasibility of the GC×GC–μECD method in analyzing biological samples. Over 1,500 compounds were identified in the fish extract, significantly more than were identified using 1D GC. The detection limits for five selected SCCP congeners were between 1 and 5 pg/L using the GC×GC method, and these were significantly lower than those achieved using 1D GC. This method is a good choice for analysis of SCCPs in environmental samples, exhibiting good separation and good sensitivity. Graphical Abstract

The European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC requires monitoring of organic priority pollutants in so-called whole water samples, i.e. in aqueous non-filtered samples that contain natural colloidal and suspended particulate matter. Colloids and suspended particles in the liquid phase constitute a challenge for sample homogeneity and stability. Within the joint research project ENV08 “Traceable measurements for monitoring critical pollutants under the European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC”, whole water test materials were developed by spiking defined amounts of aqueous slurries of ultra-finely milled contaminated soil or sediment and aqueous solutions of humic acid into a natural mineral water matrix. This paper presents the results of an European-wide interlaboratory comparison (ILC) using this type of test materials. Target analytes were tributyltin, polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the ng/L concentration range. Results of the ILC indicate that the produced materials are sufficiently homogeneous and stable to serve as samples for, e.g. proficiency testing or method validation. To our knowledge, this is the first time that ready-to-use water materials with a defined amount of suspended particulate and colloidal matter have been applied as test samples in an interlaboratory exercise. These samples meet the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive. Previous proficiency testing schemes mainly employed filtered water samples fortified with a spike of the target analyte in a water-miscible organic solvent.  相似文献

An efficient and sensitive method has been established for simultaneous determination of 653 pesticides in teas by GC/MS and HPLC/MS/MS. The method involved extraction with acetonitrile followed by cleanup using Cleanert-TPT SPE and subsequent identification and quantitation of 490 pesticides by GC/MS and 448 pesticides by HPLC/MS/ MS. The LODs for pesticides determined by GC/MS were between 1.0 and 500 microg/kg, and those determined by HPLC/MS/MS were between 0.03 and 4820 microg/kg. At the low fortification levels of 0.01-100 microg/kg, the average recoveries of 94% of the pesticides determined by GC/MS were between 60 and 120%, 77% of which had an RSD below 20%. For 91% of pesticides determined by HPLC/MS/MS, the average recoveries were between 60 and 120%, 76% of which had an RSD below 20%. The paper also reports a novel SPE column, Cleanert TPT, which comprised graphitized carbon black (PestiCarb), polyamine silica, and amide polystyrene for purifying the tea samples. The results indicated good repeatiblity and reproducibility.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to set‐up a Fast gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method for the analysis of cholesterol oxidation products (COPs). A silylated mixture of seven oxysterol standards was injected into a Fast GC/MS system. A capillary GC column (10 m×0.1 mm internal diameter×0.1 μm film thickness) coated with 95% dimethyl‐ and 5% diphenyl‐polysiloxane, was used. The method gave a fast (total analysis time=3.5 min) and satisfactory resolution (R>1.2) of the COPs standards, with a good repeatability and sensitivity, similar to those of conventional GC/MS; recoveries were tested on mice liver. Fast GC/MS method suitability for COPs analysis in food was also tested on an oxidized sardine fillet, which had been previously saponified and purified by NH2 solid‐phase extraction (SPE); a good repeatability and sensitivity was also obtained. The analytical performance of the Fast GC/MS method for the determination of COPs, together with the consequent significant reduction of the analysis time and consumables, demonstrates that Fast GC/MS represents a valid alternative to conventional GC/MS and evinces the great potential of such an analytical technique, which could be applied for both food and biological samples.  相似文献

A GC–MS method is proposed for the analysis of camphor and menthol in “over-the-counter” (OTC) products. Sample preparation was achieved by head-space solid phase microextraction using a polydimethylsiloxane fibre. GC analysis was performed using a Phenomenex ZB-5 column and a temperature program was adopted. The method was validated by studying linearity (range 0.1–15.0% w/w), accuracy, reproducibility and sensitivity. Applications were directed to the determination of the active ingredients in four different OTC-products; the mean recoveries were in the ranges 91.30–99.74% and 94.34–102.89% for camphor and menthol, respectively and the LOD was in the order of 0.005% (w/w). Other important terpenoids (α- and β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, menthone, isomenthone, α-terpineole, t-cinnamaldehyde, eugenole) were identified by mass spectra and Kovats retention indices and quantified by peak area normalization to 100%. Further information for a comprehensive characterization of the OTC-products was achieved by the GC chiral analysis on a Cyclosil B capillary column.  相似文献
