Gradient ranges of bumps on the plane

For a -smooth bump function we show that the gradient range is the closure of its interior, provided that admits a modulus of continuity satisfying as . The result is a consequence of a more general result about gradient ranges of bump functions of the same degree of smoothness. For such bump functions we show that for open sets , either the intersection is empty or its topological dimension is at least two. The proof relies on a new Morse-Sard type result where the smoothness hypothesis is independent of the dimension of the space.

     

A note on periodic points of order preserving subhomogeneous maps

Let be the standard closed positive cone in and let be the set of integers for which there exists a continuous, order preserving, subhomogeneous map , which has a periodic point with period . It has been shown by Akian, Gaubert, Lemmens, and Nussbaum that is contained in the set consisting of those for which there exist integers and such that , , and for some . This note shows that for all .

     

Poincaré duality algebras and rings of coinvariants

Let be a faithful representation of a finite group over the field . Via the group acts on and hence on the algebra of homogenous polynomial functions on the vector space . R. Kane (1994) formulated the following result based on the work of R. Steinberg (1964): If the field has characteristic 0, then is a Poincaré duality algebra if and only if is a pseudoreflection group. The purpose of this note is to extend this result to the case (i.e. the order of is relatively prime to the characteristic of ).

     

Holes in the spectrum of functions generating affine systems

Given a expansive dilation matrix , a measurable set is called a -dilation generator of if is tiled (modulo null sets) by the collection . Our main goal in this paper is to prove certain results relating the support of the Fourier transform of functions generating a wavelet or orthonormal affine system associated with the dilation to an arbitrary set which is a -dilation generator of .

     

On commutators of fractional integrals

Let be the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup on with Gaussian kernel bounds, and let be the fractional integrals of for . For a BMO function on , we show boundedness of the commutators from to , where . Our result of this boundedness still holds when is replaced by a Lipschitz domain of with infinite measure. We give applications to large classes of differential operators such as the magnetic Schrödinger operators and second-order elliptic operators of divergence form.

     

Whitney property in two dimensional Sobolev spaces

For , we prove that all the functions of satisfy the Whitney property; i.e., if is such that (in the sense of capacity) on a connected set , then is constant on .

A note on Gabor orthonormal bases

The study of Gabor bases of the form for has interested many mathematicians in recent years. Alex Losevich and Steen Pedersen in 1998, Jeffery C. Lagarias, James A. Reeds and Yang Wang in 2000 independently proved that, for any fixed positive integer , is an orthonormal basis for if and only if is a tiling of . Palle E. T. Jorgensen and Steen Pedersen in 1999 gave an explicit characterization of such for , , . Inspired by their work, this paper addresses Gabor orthonormal bases of the form for and some other related problems, where is as above. For a fixed , the generating function of a Gabor orthonormal basis for corresponding to the above is characterized explicitly provided that , which is new even if ; a Shannon type sampling theorem about such is derived when , ; for an arbitrary positive integer , an explicit expression of the with being an orthonormal basis for is obtained under the condition that .

     

A rigidity theorem for holomorphic generators on the Hilbert ball

We present a rigidity property of holomorphic generators on the open unit ball of a Hilbert space . Namely, if is the generator of a one-parameter continuous semigroup on such that for some boundary point , the admissible limit - , then vanishes identically on .

     

Parameter dependence of solutions of partial differential equations in spaces of real analytic functions

Let be an open set and let denote the class of real analytic functions on . It is proved that for every surjective linear partial differential operator and every family depending holomorphically on there is a solution family depending on in the same way such that The result is a consequence of a characterization of Fréchet spaces such that the class of ``weakly' real analytic -valued functions coincides with the analogous class defined via Taylor series. An example shows that the analogous assertions need not be valid if is replaced by another set.

     

Hilbert modules over a class of semicrossed products

Given the disk algebra and an automorphism , there is associated a non-self-adjoint operator algebra called the semicrossed product of with . Buske and Peters showed that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the contractive Hilbert modules over and pairs of contractions and on satisfying . In this paper, we show that the orthogonally projective and Shilov Hilbert modules over correspond to pairs of isometries on satisfying . The problem of commutant lifting for is left open, but some related results are presented.     

Bordism groups of special generic mappings

The Pontrjagin-Thom construction expresses a relation between the oriented bordism groups of framed immersions , and the stable homotopy groups of spheres. We apply the Pontrjagin-Thom construction to the oriented bordism groups of mappings n$">, with mildest singularities. Recently, O. Saeki showed that for , the group is isomorphic to the group of smooth structures on the sphere of dimension . Generalizing, we prove that is isomorphic to the -th stable homotopy group , , where is the group of oriented auto-diffeomorphisms of the sphere and is the group of rotations of .

     

Isolated invariant curves of a foliation

We bound the equisingularity type of the set of isolated separatrices of a holomorphic foliation of in terms of the Milnor number of . This result gives a bound for the degree of an algebraic invariant curve of a foliation of in terms of the degree of , provided that all the branches of are isolated separatrices.

     

On functions whose graph is a Hamel basis

We say that a function is a Hamel function ( ) if , considered as a subset of , is a Hamel basis for . We prove that every function from into can be represented as a pointwise sum of two Hamel functions. The latter is equivalent to the statement: for all there is a such that . We show that this fails for infinitely many functions.

     

Lifts of - and -morphisms to -morphisms

Let be the Hochschild complex of cochains on and let be the space of multivector fields on . In this paper we prove that given any -structure (i.e. Gerstenhaber algebra up to homotopy structure) on , and any -morphism (i.e. morphism of a commutative, associative algebra up to homotopy) between and , there exists a -morphism between and that restricts to . We also show that any -morphism (i.e. morphism of a Lie algebra up to homotopy), in particular the one constructed by Kontsevich, can be deformed into a -morphism, using Tamarkin's method for any -structure on . We also show that any two of such -morphisms are homotopic.

Estimates of Gromov's box distance

In 1999, M. Gromov introduced the box distance function on the space of all mm-spaces. In this paper, by using the method of T. H. Colding, we estimate and , where is the -dimensional unit sphere in and is the -dimensional complex projective space equipped with the Fubini-Study metric. In particular, we give the complete answer to an exercise of Gromov's green book. We also estimate from below, where is the special orthogonal group.

     

Global existence for the critical generalized KdV equation

We discuss results regarding global existence of solutions for the critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation,

The theory established shows the existence of global solutions in Sobolev spaces with order below the one given by the energy space , i.e. solutions corresponding to data , 3/4$">, with , where is the solitary wave solution of the equation.

     

Porous measures on : Local structure and dimensional properties

We study dimensional properties of porous measures on . As a corollary of a theorem describing the local structure of nearly uniformly porous measures we prove that the packing dimension of any Radon measure on has an upper bound depending on porosity. This upper bound tends to as porosity tends to its maximum value.
