We introduce an algorithm that embeds a given 3-connected planar graph as a convex 3-polytope with integer coordinates. The size of the coordinates is bounded by O(27.55n )=O(188 n ). If the graph contains a triangle we can bound the integer coordinates by O(24.82n ). If the graph contains a quadrilateral we can bound the integer coordinates by O(25.46n ). The crucial part of the algorithm is to find a convex plane embedding whose edges can be weighted such that the sum of the weighted edges, seen as vectors, cancel at every point. It is well known that this can be guaranteed for the interior vertices by applying a technique of Tutte. We show how to extend Tutte’s ideas to construct a plane embedding where the weighted vector sums cancel also on the vertices of the boundary face.  相似文献

In 1956, W.T. Tutte proved that a 4-connected planar graph is hamiltonian. Moreover, in 1997, D.P. Sanders extended this to the result that a 4-connected planar graph contains a hamiltonian cycle through any two of its edges. We prove that a planar graph G has a cycle containing a given subset X of its vertex set and any two prescribed edges of the subgraph of G induced by X if |X|≥3 and if X is 4-connected in G. If X=V(G) then Sanders’ result follows.  相似文献

The family of well-orderly maps is a family of planar maps with the property that every connected planar graph has at least one plane embedding which is a well-orderly map. We show that the number of well-orderly maps with n nodes is at most 2αn+O(logn), where α≈4.91. A direct consequence of this is a new upper bound on the number p(n) of unlabeled planar graphs with n nodes, log2p(n)≤4.91n. The result is then used to show that asymptotically almost all (labeled or unlabeled), (connected or not) planar graphs with n nodes have between 1.85n and 2.44n edges. Finally we obtain as an outcome of our combinatorial analysis an explicit linear-time encoding algorithm for unlabeled planar graphs using, in the worst-case, a rate of 4.91 bits per node and of 2.82 bits per edge.  相似文献

A graph G is said to have property E(m,n) if it contains a perfect matching and for every pair of disjoint matchings M and N in G with |M|=m and |N|=n, there is a perfect matching F in G such that MF and NF=0?. In a previous paper (Aldred and Plummer 2001) [2], an investigation of the property E(m,n) was begun for graphs embedded in the plane. In particular, although no planar graph is E(3,0), it was proved there that if the distance among the three edges is at least two, then they can always be extended to a perfect matching. In the present paper, we extend these results by considering the properties E(m,n) for planar triangulations when more general distance restrictions are imposed on the edges to be included and avoided in the extension.  相似文献

A graph with n vertices is said to have a small cycle cover provided its edges can be covered with at most (2n ? 1)/3 cycles. Bondy [2] has conjectured that every 2-connected graph has a small cycle cover. In [3] Lai and Lai prove Bondy’s conjecture for plane triangulations. In [1] the author extends this result to all planar 3-connected graphs, by proving that they can be covered by at most (n + 1)/2 cycles. In this paper we show that Bondy’s conjecture holds for all planar 2-connected graphs. We also show that all planar 2-edge-connected graphs can be covered by at most (3n ? 3)/4 cycles and we show an infinite family of graphs for which this bound is attained.  相似文献

Untangling is a process in which some vertices in a drawing of a planar graph are moved to obtain a straight-line plane drawing. The aim is to move as few vertices as possible. We present an algorithm that untangles the cycle graph C n while keeping Ω(n 2/3) vertices fixed. For any connected graph G, we also present an upper bound on the number of fixed vertices in the worst case. The bound is a function of the number of vertices, maximum degree, and diameter of G. One consequence is that every 3-connected planar graph has a drawing δ such that at most O((nlog n)2/3) vertices are fixed in every untangling of δ.  相似文献

The circumference of a graph is the length of its longest cycles. Results of Jackson, and Jackson and Wormald, imply that the circumference of a 3-connected cubic n-vertex graph is Ω(n0.694), and the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph is Ω(n0.121). We generalize and improve the first result by showing that every 3-edge-connected graph with m edges has an Eulerian subgraph with Ω(m0.753) edges. We use this result together with the Ryjá?ek closure operation to improve the lower bound on the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph to Ω(n0.753). Our proofs imply polynomial time algorithms for finding large Eulerian subgraphs of 3-edge-connected graphs and long cycles in 3-connected claw-free graphs.  相似文献

It is important to minimize the area of a drawing of a graph, so that the drawing can fit in a small drawing-space. It is well-known that a planar graph with n vertices admits a planar straight-line grid drawing with O(n2) area [H. de Fraysseix, J. Pach, R. Pollack, How to draw a planar graph on a grid, Combinatorica 10(1) (1990) 41-51; W. Schnyder, Embedding planar graphs on the grid, in: Proceedings of the First ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms, 1990, pp. 138-148]. Unfortunately, there is a matching lower-bound of Ω(n2) on the area-requirements of the planar straight-line grid drawings of certain planar graphs. Hence, it is important to investigate important categories of planar graphs to determine if they admit planar straight-line grid drawings with o(n2) area.In this paper, we investigate an important category of planar graphs, namely, outerplanar graphs. We show that an outerplanar graph G with degree d admits a planar straight-line grid drawing with area O(dn1.48) in O(n) time. This implies that if d=o(n0.52), then G can be drawn in this manner in o(n2) area.  相似文献

We present a parallel randomized algorithm running on aCRCW PRAM, to determine whether two planar graphs are isomorphic, and if so to find the isomorphism. We assume that we have a tree of separators for each planar graph (which can be computed by known algorithms inO(log2 n) time withn1 + εprocessors, for any ε > 0). Ifnis the number of vertices, our algorithm takesO(log(n)) time with processors and with a probability of failure of 1/nat most. The algorithm needs 2 · log(m) − log(n) + O(log(n)) random bits. The number of random bits can be decreased toO(log(n)) by increasing the number of processors ton3/2 + ε, for any ε > 0. Our parallel algorithm has significantly improved processor efficiency, compared to the previous logarithmic time parallel algorithm of Miller and Reif (Siam J. Comput.20(1991), 1128–1147), which requiresn4randomized processors orn5deterministic processors.  相似文献

 We prove that for every 2-connected planar graph the pathwidth of its geometric dual is less than the pathwidth of its line graph. This implies that pathwidth(H)≤ pathwidth(H *)+1 for every planar triangulation H and leads us to a conjecture that pathwidth(G)≤pathwidth(G *)+1 for every 2-connected graph G. Whitney’s 2-switching theorem states that any two embeddings of a 2-connected planar graph in S 2 can be connected via a sequence of simple operations, named 2-switching. In this paper, we obtain two operations on planar graphs from the view point of knot theory, which we will term “twisting” and “2-switching” respectively. With the twisting operation, we give a pure geometrical proof of Whitney’s 2-switching theorem. As an application, we obtain some relationships between two knots which correspond to the same signed planar graph. Besides, we also give a necessary and sufficient condition to test whether a pair of reduced alternating diagrams are mutants of each other by their signed planar graphs.  相似文献

A graph G is said to be well-covered if every maximal independent set of vertices has the same cardinality. A planar (simple) graph in which each face is a triangle is called a triangulation. It was proved in an earlier paper [A. Finbow, B. Hartnell, R. Nowakowski, M. Plummer, On well-covered triangulations: Part I, Discrete Appl. Math., 132, 2004, 97-108] that there are no 5-connected planar well-covered triangulations. It is the aim of the present paper to completely determine the 4-connected well-covered triangulations containing two adjacent vertices of degree 4. In a subsequent paper [A. Finbow, B. Hartnell, R. Nowakowski, M. Plummer, On well-covered triangulations: Part III (submitted for publication)], we show that every 4-connected well-covered triangulation contains two adjacent vertices of degree 4 and hence complete the task of characterizing all 4-connected well-covered planar triangulations. There turn out to be only four such graphs. This stands in stark contrast to the fact that there are infinitely many 3-connected well-covered planar triangulations.  相似文献

It is known that every planar graph has a planar embedding where edges are represented by non-crossing straight-line segments. We study the planar slope number, i.e., the minimum number of distinct edge-slopes in such a drawing of a planar graph with maximum degree Δ. We show that the planar slope number of every planar partial 3-tree and also every plane partial 3-tree is at most O(Δ 5). In particular, we answer the question of Dujmovi? et al. (Comput Geom 38(3):194–212, 2007) whether there is a function f such that plane maximal outerplanar graphs can be drawn using at most f(Δ) slopes.  相似文献

This paper deals with the length of a Robertson-Seymour's tree-decomposition. The tree-length of a graph is the largest distance between two vertices of a bag of a tree-decomposition, minimized over all tree-decompositions of the graph. The study of this invariant may be interesting in its own right because the class of bounded tree-length graphs includes (but is not reduced to) bounded chordality graphs (like interval graphs, permutation graphs, AT-free graphs, etc.). For instance, we show that the tree-length of any outerplanar graph is ⌈k/3⌉, where k is the chordality of the graph, and we compute the tree-length of meshes.More fundamentally we show that any algorithm computing a tree-decomposition approximating the tree-width (or the tree-length) of an n-vertex graph by a factor α or less does not give an α-approximation of the tree-length (resp. the tree-width) unless if α=Ω(n1/5). We complete these results presenting several polynomial time constant approximate algorithms for the tree-length.The introduction of this parameter is motivated by the design of compact distance labeling, compact routing tables with near-optimal route length, and by the construction of sparse additive spanners.  相似文献

We present a new representation of a chordal graph called the clique-separator graph, whose nodes are the maximal cliques and minimal vertex separators of the graph. We present structural properties of the clique-separator graph and additional properties when the chordal graph is an interval graph, proper interval graph, or split graph. We also characterize proper interval graphs and split graphs in terms of the clique-separator graph. We present an algorithm that constructs the clique-separator graph of a chordal graph in O(n3) time and of an interval graph in O(n2) time, where n is the number of vertices in the graph.  相似文献

Motivated by the gateway placement problem in wireless networks, we consider the geometric k-centre problem on unit disc graphs: given a set of points P in the plane, find a set F of k points in the plane that minimizes the maximum graph distance from any vertex in P to the nearest vertex in F in the unit disc graph induced by PF. We show that the vertex 1-centre provides a 7-approximation of the geometric 1-centre and that a vertex k-centre provides a 13-approximation of the geometric k-centre, resulting in an O(kn)-time 26-approximation algorithm. We describe O(n2m)-time and O(n3)-time algorithms, respectively, for finding exact and approximate geometric 1-centres, and an O(mn2k)-time algorithm for finding a geometric k-centre for any fixed k. We show that the problem is NP-hard when k is an arbitrary input parameter. Finally, we describe an O(n)-time algorithm for finding a geometric k-centre in one dimension.  相似文献

Some structural properties of planar graphs without 4-cycles are investigated. By the structural properties, it is proved that every planar graph G without 4-cycles is edge-(Δ(G)+1)-choosable, which perfects the result given by Zhang and Wu: If G is a planar graph without 4-cycles, then G is edge-t-choosable, where t=7 if Δ(G)=5, and otherwise t=Δ(G)+1.  相似文献

We study the computational complexity of the vertex cover problem in the class of planar graphs (planar triangulations) admitting a plane representation whose faces are triangles. It is shown that the problem is strongly NP-hard in the class of 4-connected planar triangulations in which the degrees of vertices are of order O(log n), where n is the number of vertices, and in the class of plane 4-connected Delaunay triangulations based on the Minkowski triangular distance. A pair of vertices in such a triangulation is adjacent if and only if there is an equilateral triangle ?(p, λ) with pR2 and λ > 0 whose interior does not contain triangulation vertices and whose boundary contains this pair of vertices and only it, where ?(p, λ) = p + λ? = {xR2: x = p + λa, a ∈ ?}; here ? is the equilateral triangle with unit sides such that its barycenter is the origin and one of the vertices belongs to the negative y-axis. We show how to find in Hamiltonian graphs a cycle of length nΩ(1/loglogn)=exp(Ω(logn/loglogn)). This is a consequence of a more general result in which we show that if G has a maximum degree d and has a cycle with k vertices (or a 3-cyclable minor H with k vertices), then we can find in O(n3) time a cycle in G of length kΩ(1/logd). From this we infer that if G has a cycle of length k, then one can find in O(n3) time a cycle of length kΩ(1/(log(n/k)+loglogn)), which implies the result for Hamiltonian graphs. Our results improve, for some values of k and d, a recent result of Gabow (2004) [11] showing that if G has a cycle of length k, then one can find in polynomial time a cycle in G of length . We finally show that if G has fixed Euler genus g and has a cycle with k vertices (or a 3-cyclable minor H with k vertices), then we can find in polynomial time a cycle in G of length f(g)kΩ(1), running in time O(n2) for planar graphs.  相似文献
