A photophysical study of norharmane (NHM), an efficient cancer cell photosensitizer, has been undertaken in well-characterized biomimetic micellar nanocavities formed by anionic surfactants of varying chain length, namely, sodium decyl sulfate (S10S), sodium dodecyl sulfate (S12S), and sodium tetradecyl sulfate (S14S), using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The effect of the hydrophobic chain length on the structural dynamism of the fluorophore has been reported. Experimental results demonstrate that the equilibrium of this dynamism is sensitive to the environment. Variation in the surfactant chain length plays an important role in promoting a specific prototropic form of the probe molecule. A striking feature of the present study is that an increase in the surfactant chain length (hydrophobicity) favors the cationic species of NHM. This has been rationalized on the basis of changes in the local pH and the aggregation number of the micelles. A fluorescence quenching study of the micelle-bound probe using ionic quencher Cu2+ corroborates this.  相似文献

A steady-state and time-resolved photophysical study of a cationic phenazinium dye, phenosafranin (PSF), has been investigated in well-characterized biomimetic micellar nanocavities formed by anionic surfactants of varying chain lengths, namely, sodium decyl sulfate (S(10)S), sodium dodecyl sulfate (S(12)S), and sodium tetradecyl sulfate (S(14)S). In all these micellar environments, the charge transfer fluorescence of PSF shows a large hypsochromic shift along with an enhancement in the fluorescence quantum yield as compared to that in aqueous medium. A reduction in the nonradiative deactivation rate within the hydrophobic interior of micelles led to an increase in the fluorescence yield and lifetime. The present work shows the degree of accessibility of the fluorophore toward the ionic quencher in the presence of surfactants of different surfactant chain lengths. The fluorometric and fluorescence quenching studies suggest that the fluorophore resides at the micelle-water interfacial region. The enhancements in the fluorescence anisotropy and rotational relaxation time of the probe in all the micellar environments from the pure aqueous solution suggest that the fluorophore binds in motionally restricted regions introduced by the micelles. Polarity and viscosity of the microenvironments around the probe in the micellar systems have been determined. The work has paid proper attention to the hydrophobic effect of the surfactant chain length on photophysical observations.  相似文献

Spin probe EPR spectroscopy has been employed to study the effect of a cationic monomer, trimethyl(methacryloxyethyl)ammonium methyl sulfate, on the formation, local structure, and dynamics of sodium octyl sulfate micelles in aqueous solutions. It has been established that the monomer does not affect significantly the parameters of probe rotation in micelles of this surfactant, thereby indicating a weak interaction between the studied monomer and surfactant micelles. The absence of a template effect upon monomer polymerization in micellar sodium octyl sulfate solutions, which has been confirmed by unchanged molecular-mass characteristics of obtained polymers, indicates that it is inefficient to use sodium octyl sulfate micelles as a template for radical polymerization of cationic monomers in aqueous media, in contrast to sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles studied previously.  相似文献

Photoinduced electron transfer from N,N-dimethylaniline to different Coumarin dyes has been investigated in dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) micelles and in Bovine serum albumin (BSA)-DTAB protein-surfactant complex using steady-state and picosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. We observed a slower fluorescence quenching rate in the DTAB micelles and in the protein-surfactant complex as compared to that in pure acetonitrile solution. Moreover, the observed fluorescence quenching in BSA-DTAB complex was found to be slower than that in DTAB micelles. In the correlation of free-energy change with the fluorescence quenching constant we observed a deviation in the fluorescence quenching electron transfer rate for Coumarin 151 (C-151) from the normal Marcus curve. This observation is ascribed to the stronger interaction of C-151 with the surfactant molecules present in the micelles. This is evident from the slower translation diffusion (D(L)) of Coumarin 151 compared to other probe molecules.  相似文献

Mixed micellization behavior of dimeric cationic surfactant ethanediyl-1,2-bis (dimethyldodecylammonium bromide) (12-2-12) with a series of monomeric cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) has been studied in aqueous and aqueous polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solutions at 298.15, 308.15, and 318.15 K, respectively, using conductometric method. Various thermodynamic parameters like mixed micelle concentration (Cm), micelle mole fraction (X1), interaction parameter (β), and free energy of mixing (ΔGex) of the mixed systems have been determined and analyzed using Rubingh's regular solution theory. The results indicate that in aqueous solutions the binary mixtures of 12-2-12 with DTAB/TTAB behave nonideally with mutual synergism whereas that with CTAB shows almost ideal behavior at 298.15 K. At 318.15 K, all these binary mixtures exhibit antagonistic behavior. The effect of variation in chain length of alkyltrimethyl ammonium bromide surfactants on the interactions with 12-2-12 have also been evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

The critical micelle concentration (CMC) has been determined for the gemini surfactant trimethylene-1,3-bis(dodecyldimethyl ammonium bromide)12-s-12,2Br?1 by means of electricity conductivity measurements. For the same number of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic chain per hydrophilic head group, geminis have CMC values well below those of conventional single-chain cationic surfactants. The CMC of 12-3-12 reduces with the addition of n-alcohol except ethanol and with the increase of n-alcohol chain length as well as increase of concentration of n-butanol and sodium chloride. Steady-state fluorescence quenching technology has been employed to study the aggregation number of micelle, which increases with increase in the length of n-alcohol. The Kraft temperature measurements also indicate that the stability of solid surfactant hydrate decreases along with the improvement of concentration of n-butanol and sodium chloride.  相似文献

A new kind of fluorescence probe, a fluorophore-labeled anionic surfactant, sodium 12-(N-dansyl)amino-dodecanate (12-DAN-ADA), was designed and synthesized. The applications of 12-DAN-ADA as a fluorescence probe in molecular assemblies, especially in the transitions between micelles and vesicles, were investigated systematically. It was found that 12-DAN-ADA can efficiently differentiate the two different aggregate types (shapes) in mixed cationic and anionic surfactant systems and double-chain cationic surfactant systems. Experimental results showed that the fluorescence anisotropy of 12-DAN-ADA increased sharply, the emission maxima became blue-shifted, and the fluorescence lifetime rose notably when the aggregates transformed from micelles to vesicles in mixed cationic and anionic surfactant systems. The fluorescence anisotropy can also distinguish different aggregate types in single-component double-chain cationic surfactant systems. Further studies demonstrated that 12-DAN-ADA is a more useful probe of transitions between micelles and vesicles than commonly used fluorescence probes, such as pyrene and 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH).  相似文献

(1)H NMR chemical shift, spin-lattice relaxation time, spin-spin relaxation time, self-diffusion coefficient, and two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser enhancement (2D NOESY) measurements have been used to study the nonionic-ionic surfactant mixed micelles. Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used as the ionic surfactants and polyethylene glycol (23) lauryl ether (Brij-35) as the nonionic surfactant. The two systems are both with varying molar ratios of CTAB/Brij-35 (C/B) and SDS/Brij-35 (S/B) ranging from 0.5 to 2, respectively, at a constant concentration of 6 mM for Brij-35 in aqueous solutions. Results give information about the relative arrangement of the surfactant molecules in the mixed micelles. In the former system, the trimethyl groups attached to the polar heads of the CTAB molecules are located between the first oxy-ethylene groups next to the hydrophobic chains of Brij-35 molecules. These oxy-ethylene groups gradually move outward from the hydrophobic core of the mixed micelle with an increase in C/B in the mixed solution. In contrast to the case of the CTAB/Triton X-100 system, the long flexible hydrophilic poly oxy-ethylene chains, which are in the exterior part of the mixed micelles, remain coiled, but looser, surrounding the hydrophobic core. There is almost no variation in conformation of the hydrophilic chains of Brij-35 molecules in the mixed micelles of the SDS/Brij-35 system as the S/B increases. The hydrophobic chains of both CTAB and SDS are co-aggregated with Brij-35, respectively, in their mixed micellar cores.  相似文献

Steady-state photophysics of norharmane (NHM), a bioactive alkaloid, has been studied in the presence of a model transport protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA). The emission spectrum undergoes a remarkable change upon addition of BSA to the aqueous solution of NHM in buffer. Addition of BSA leads to a marked increase in the fluorescence anisotropy of the neutral species of NHM, although the fluorescence anisotropy for the cationic species is almost invariant to BSA addition, suggesting that the neutral species is located in a motionally restricted environment of BSA, whereas the cationic species remains in the bulk aqueous phase. The binding constant (K) and free energy change (DeltaG) for the probe-protein binding have been calculated from the fluorescence data. Light has been thrown on the action of urea on protein-bound NHM. The denaturation study suggests that the protein, in its native form, binds with NHM. Polarity of the microenvironment around the probe has been determined from a comparison of the fluorescence properties of the two prototropic species of NHM in water-dioxane mixture with varying composition.  相似文献

Interaction and stability of binary mixtures of cationic surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) or hexadecylpyridinium bromide (HPyBr) with nonionic surfactant decanoyl-N-methyl-glucamide (Mega-10) have been studied at different mole fraction of cationic surfactants by using interfacial tension measurements and fluorescence probe techniques. From interfacial tension measurements, the critical micellar concentration and various interfacial thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated. The experimental cmc's were analyzed with the pseudophase separation model, the regular solution theory, and the Maeda's approach. These approaches allowed us to determine the interaction parameter and composition in the mixed state. By using the static quenching method, the mean micellar aggregation numbers of pure and mixed micelles of HTAB + Mega-10 were obtained. It has been observed that the aggregation number of mixed micelles deviates negatively from the ideal behavior. The micropolarity of the micelle was monitored with pyrene fluorescence intensity ratio and found to be increase with the increase of ionic content. The polarization of fluorescence probe Rhodamine B was monitored at different mole fraction of cationic surfactants.  相似文献

The interfacial and aggregation behavior of the nonionic surfactant decanoyl-N-methyl-glucamide (Mega-10) with the cationic surfactant hexadecyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (HTPB) have been studied using interfacial tension measurements and fluorescence techniques. From interfacial tension measurements, the critical micellar concentrations (cmc) and various interfacial thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated. The experimental results were analyzed in the context of the pseudophase separation model, the regular solution theory, and the Maeda’s approach. These approaches allowed us to determine the interaction parameter and composition in the mixed state. By using the static quenching method, the mean micellar aggregation numbers of pure and mixed micelles of HTPB+Mega-10 were obtained. It was found that that the aggregation number decreases with increasing mole fraction of HTPB. This behavior is attributed to the presence of the bulky head group of HTPB, which creates steric head group incompatibility and/or electrostatic repulsion. The micropolarity of the micelle was monitored with pyrene fluorescence intensity ratio. It was observed that the increasing participation of HTPB induces the formation of micelles with a hydrated structure. The polarization of the fluorescent probe Rhodamine B was monitored in micellar medium and found to increase with the increase of ionic content. This behavior suggests the formation of mixed micelles with a more ordered or rigid structure.  相似文献

The energetics of micelle formation of three single-chain cationic surfactants bearing single (h = 1), double (h = 2), and triple (h = 3) trimethylammonium [(+)N(CH(3))(3)] headgroups have been investigated by microcalorimetry. The results were compared with the microcalorimetric data obtained from well-known cationic surfactant, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), bearing a single chain and single headgroup. The critical micellar concentrations (cmc's) and the degrees of counterion dissociation (alpha) of micelles of these surfactants were also determined by conductometry. The cmc and the alpha values increased with the increase in the number of headgroups of the surfactant. The relationship between the cmc of the surfactant in solution and its free energy of micellization (DeltaG(m)) was derived for each surfactant. Exothermic enthalpies of micellization (DeltaH(m)) and positive entropies of micellization (DeltaS(m)) were observed for all the surfactants. Negative DeltaH(m) values increased from CTAB to h = 1 to h = 2 and decreased for h = 3 whereas DeltaS(m) values decreased with increase in the number of headgroups. The DeltaG(m) values progressively became less negative with the increase in the number of headgroups. This implies that micelle formation becomes progressively less favorable as more headgroups are incorporated in the surfactant. From the steady-state fluorescence measurements using pyrene as a probe, the micropolarities sensed by the probe inside various micelles were determined. These studies suggest that the micelles are more hydrated with multiheaded surfactants and the micropolarity of micelles increases with the increase in the number of headgroups.  相似文献

An anionic/cationic mixed surfactant aqueous system of surfactin and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) at different molar ratios was studied by surface tension and fluorescence methods (pH 8.0). Various parameters that included critical micelle concentration (cmc), micellar composition (X 1), and interaction parameter (β m) as well as thermodynamic properties of mixed micelles were determined. The β m was found to be negative and the mixed system was found to have much lower cmc than pure surfactant systems. There exits synergism between anionic surfactin and cationic CTAB surfactants. The degree of participation of surfactin in the formation of mixed micelle changes with mixing ratio of the two surfactants. The results of aggregation number, fluorescence anisotropy, and viscosity indicate that more packed and larger aggregates were formed from mixed surfactants than unmixed, and the mixed system may be able to form vesicle spontaneously at high molar fraction of surfactin.  相似文献

Controllable synthesis of conducting polypyrrole nanostructures   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Wire-, ribbon-, and sphere-like nanostructures of polypyrrole have been synthesized by solution chemistry methods in the presence of various surfactants (anionic, cationic, or nonionic surfactant) with various oxidizing agents [ammonium persulfate (APS) or ferric chloride (FeCl3), respectively]. The surfactants and oxidizing agents used in this study have played a key role in tailoring the nanostructures of polypyrrole during the polymerization. It is inferred that the lamellar structures of a mesophase are formed by self-assembly between the cations of a long chain cationic surfactant [cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or dodeyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)] and anions of oxidizing agent APS. These layered mesostructures are presumed to act as templates for the formation of wire- and ribbon-like polypyrrole nanostructures. In contrast, if a short chain cationic surfactant octyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) or nonionic surfactant poly(ethylene glycol) mono-p-nonylphenyl ether (Opi-10) is used, sphere-like polypyrrole nanostructures are obtained, whichever of the oxidizing agents mentioned above is used. In this case, micelles resulting from self-assembly among surfactant molecules are envisaged to serve as the templates while the polymerization happens. It is also noted that, if anionic surfactant sodium dodeyl surfate (SDS) is used, no characteristic nanostructures of polypyrrole were observed. This may be attributed to the doping effect of anionic surfactants into the resulting polypyrrole chains, and as a result, micelles self-assembled among surfactant molecules are broken down during the polymerization. The effects of monomer concentration, surfactant concentration, and surfactant chain length on the morphologies of the resulting polypyrrole have been investigated in detail. The molecular structures, composition, and electrical properties of the nanostructured polypyrrole have also been investigated in this study.  相似文献

Solvation dynamics of the fluorescence probe, coumarin 102, in anionic surfactant, sodium alkyl sulfate (C(n)H(2n+1)SO(4)Na; n = 8, 10, 12, and 14), and cationic surfactant, alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(n)H(2n+1)N(CH(3))(3)Br; n = 10, 12, 14, and 16), micelle solutions have been investigated by a picosecond streak camera system. The solvation dynamics in the time range of 10(-10)-10(-8) s is characterized by a biexponential function. The faster solvation time constants are about 110-160 ps for both anionic and cationic micelle solutions, and the slower solvation time constants for sodium alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelle solutions are about 1.2-2.6 ns and 450-740 ps, respectively. Both the faster and the slower solvation times become slower with longer alkyl chain surfactant micelles. The alkyl-chain-length dependence of the solvation dynamics in both sodium alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles can be attributed to the variation of the micellar surface density of the polar headgroup by the change of the alkyl chain length. The slower solvation time constants of sodium alkyl sulfate micelle solutions are about 3.5 times slower than those of alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelle solutions for the same alkyl-chain-length surfactants. The interaction energies of the geometry optimized mimic clusters (H(2)O-C(2)H(5)SO(4)(-) and H(2)O-C(2)H(5)N(CH(3))(3)(+)) have been estimated by the density functional theory calculations to understand the interaction strengths between water and alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium headgroups. The difference of the slower solvation time constants between sodium alkyl sulfate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide micelle solutions arises likely from their different specific interactions.  相似文献

The interaction of Indian natural dye, that is, Himalaya (Quercus infectoria) with cationic surfactant (cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide) and anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulphate) has been studied. The spectrophotometric data showed an interaction between the natural dye and surfactants. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the surfactants, determined by measurement of specific conductance and surface tension methods, was found to be increase in case of anionic surfactant while that was found to decrease in case of cationic surfactant. Thermodynamic and surface parameters showed domination of micellization of dye in case of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and domination of adsorption of dye in case of sodium lauryl sulphate.  相似文献

The aggregation behavior of cationic gemini surfactants with respect to variation in head group polarity and spacer length is studied through conductance, surface tension, viscosity, and small-angle neutron-scattering (SANS) measurements. The critical micellar concentration (cmc), average degree of micelle ionization (beta(ave)), minimum area per molecule of surfactant at the air-water interface (A(min)), surface excess concentration (gamma(max)), and Gibb's free energy of micellization (delta G(mic)) of the surfactants were determined from conductance and surface tension data. The aggregation numbers (N), dimensions of micelles (b/a), effective fractional charge per monomer (alpha), and hydration of micelles (h(E)) were determined from SANS and viscosity data, respectively. The increasing head group polarity of gemini surfactant with spacer chain length of 4 methylene units promotes micellar growth, leading to a decrease in cmc, beta(ave), and delta G(mic) and an increase in N and b/a. This is well supported by the observed increase in hydration (h(E)) of micelles with increase in aggregation number (N) and dimension (b/a) of micelle.  相似文献

Mixtures of n-octyl-β-d-thioglucoside with three different n-alkyltrimethylammonium bromides (n?=?12 (DTAB), 14 (TTAB), and 16 (CTAB)) have been studied by using fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. The critical micelle concentration values of pure and mixed systems were determined by the pyrene 1:3 ratio method. The experimental results were treated by using thermodynamic mixing approaches based on the pseudophase separation model. It was found that all the mixed systems show a negative deviation from ideal behavior, more pronounced as the larger the alkyl tail of the co-surfactant. It was also observed that the three mixed systems fulfill the conditions of synergism, this behavior being also dependent on the alkyl chain length. By using the static quenching method, the mean micellar aggregation numbers of mixed micelles were obtained. In all the cases, it was observed that the aggregation number is initially reduced with the participation of the cationic surfactant, remaining almost constant and close to the aggregation number of the pure cationic micelles. The local viscosity of pure and mixed micelles was examined by the photophysical response of the hydrophobic probe coumarin 6 solubilized in the micellar medium. It was found that the participation of the ionic component induces the formation of a less ordered structure than that of pure nonionic micelles. This effect being less pronounced as the chain hydrocarbon length of the co-surfactant increases.  相似文献

Gramicidin A (gA) is a linear pentadecapeptide, which exhibits various conformations depending on the environment. The conformational behavior of gA in spherical and rod-shaped cationic micelles formed by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant has been studied using circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy, and a probable structure of gramicidin A in CTAB media has been proposed. A CD study shows that gramicidin A assumes beta(6.3) helical structure in cationic spherical as well as rod-shaped CTAB micellar media. Modeling studies show the flexibility of the side chain conformation particularly in tryptophan-9. Study of intrinsic fluorescence of tryptophans in gramicidin A indicates three distinct environments for the four-tryptophan residues in CTAB media.  相似文献
