The dependence of the electron transport and recombination dynamics on the internal surface area of mesoporous nanocrystalline TiO2 films in dye-sensitized solar cells was investigated. The internal surface area was varied by altering the average particle size in the films. The scaling of the photoelectron density and the electron diffusion coefficient at short circuit with internal surface area confirms the results of a recent study (Kopidakis, N.; Neale, N. R.; Zhu, K.; van de Lagemaat, J.; Frank, A. J. Appl. Phys. Lett. 2005, 87, 202106) that transport-limiting traps are located predominately on the surfaces of the particles. The recombination current density was found to increase superlinearly (with an exponent of 1.40 +/- 0.12) with the internal surface area. This result is at odds with the expected linear dependence of the recombination current density on the surface area when only the film thickness is increased. The observed scaling of the recombination current density with surface area is consistent with recombination being transport-limited. Evidence is also presented confirming that photoinjected electrons recombine with redox species in the electrolyte via surface states rather than from the TiO2 conduction band.  相似文献

In this paper we address the dependence of the charge recombination dynamics in dye-sensitized, nanocrystalline TiO2 films upon the properties of the sensitizer dye employed. In particular we focus upon dependence of the charge recombination kinetics upon the dye oxidation potential E0(D+/D), determined electrochemically, and the spatial separation r of the dye cation HOMO orbital from the metal oxide surface, determined by semiempirical calculations. Our studies employed a series of ruthenium bipyridyl dyes in addition to porphyrin and phthalocyanine dyes. A strong correlation is observed between the recombination dynamics and the spatial separation r, with variation in r by 3 A resulting in a more than 10-fold change in the recombination half-time t(50%). This correlation is found to be in agreement with electron tunneling theory, t(50%) proportional, variant exp(-betar) with beta = 0.95 +/- 0.2 A-1. In contrast, the recombination dynamics were found to be relatively insensitive to variations in E0D+/D), indicative of the recombination reaction lying near the peak of the Marcus free energy curve, DeltaG approximately lambda, and with lambda approximately 0.8 eV. A correlation is also observed between the recombination half-time and the temporal shape of the kinetics, with faster recombination dynamics being more dispersive (less monoexponential). Comparison with numerical Monte Carlo type simulations suggests this correlation is attributed to a shift from fast recombination dynamics primarily limited by dispersive electron transport within the metal oxide film to slower dynamics primarily limited by the interfacial electron-transfer reaction. We conclude that the primary factor controlling the charge recombination dynamics in dye-sensitized, nanocrystalline TiO2 films is the spatial separation of the dye cation from the electrode surface. In particular, we show that for the Ru(dcbpy)2NCS2 dye series, the use of X = NCS rather than X = CN results in a 2 A shift in the dye cation HOMO orbital away from the electrode surface, causing a 7-fold retardation of the recombination dynamics, resulting in the remarkably slow recombination dynamics observed for this sensitizer dye.  相似文献

Time resolved absorption spectroscopy has been used to study photoinduced electron injection and charge recombination in Zn-porphyrin sensitized nanostructured TiO(2) electrodes. The electron transfer dynamics is correlated to the performance of dye sensitized solar cells based on the same electrodes. We find that the dye/semiconductor binding can be described with a heterogeneous geometry where the Zn-porphyrin molecules are attached to the TiO(2) surface with a distribution of tilt angles. The binding angle determines the porphyrin-semiconductor electron transfer distance and charge transfer occurs through space, rather than through the bridge connecting the porphyrin to the surface. For short sensitization times (1 h), there is a direct correlation between solar cell efficiency and amplitude of the kinetic component due to long-lived conduction band electrons, once variations in light harvesting (surface coverage) have been taken into account. Long sensitization time (12 h) results in decreased solar cell efficiency because of decreased efficiency of electron injection.  相似文献

A zinc phthalocyanine with tyrosine substituents (ZnPcTyr), modified for efficient far-red/near-IR performance in dye-sensitized nanostructured TiO(2) solar cells, and its reference, glycine-substituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPcGly), were synthesized and characterized. The compounds were studied spectroscopically, electrochemically, and photoelectrochemically. Incorporating tyrosine groups into phthalocyanine makes the dye ethanol-soluble and reduces surface aggregation as a result of steric effects. The performance of a solar cell based on ZnPcTyr is much better than that based on ZnPcGly. Addition of 3alpha,7alpha-dihydroxy-5beta-cholic acid (cheno) and 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) to the dye solution when preparing a dye-sensitized TiO(2) electrode diminishes significantly the surface aggregation and, therefore, improves the performance of solar cells based on these phthalocyanines. The highest monochromatic incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of approximately 24% at 690 nm and an overall conversion efficiency (eta) of 0.54% were achieved for a cell based on a ZnPcTyr-sensitized TiO(2) electrode. Addition of TBP in the electrolyte decreases the IPCE and eta considerably, although it increases the open-circuit photovoltage. Time-resolved transient absorption measurements of interfacial electron-transfer kinetics in a ZnPcTyr-sensitized nanostructured TiO(2) thin film show that electron injection from the excited state of the dye into the conduction band of TiO(2) is completed in approximately 500 fs and that more than half of the injected electrons recombines with the oxidized dye molecules in approximately 300 ps. In addition to surface aggregation, the very fast electron recombination is most likely responsible for the low performance of the solar cell based on ZnPcTyr.  相似文献

Ultraviolet light-induced electron-hole pair excitations in anatase TiO(2) powders were studied by a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy measurements. During continuous UV irradiation in the mW.cm(-2) range, photogenerated electrons are either trapped at localized sites, giving paramagnetic Ti(3+) centers, or remain in the conduction band as EPR silent species which may be observed by their IR absorption. Using low temperatures (90 K) to reduce the rate of the electron-hole recombination processes, trapped electrons and conduction band electrons exhibit lifetimes of hours. The EPR-detected holes produced by photoexcitation are O(-) species, produced from lattice O(2-) ions. It is found that under high vacuum conditions, the major fraction of photoexcited electrons remains in the conduction band. At 298 K, all stable hole and electron states are lost from TiO(2). Defect sites produced by oxygen removal during annealing of anatase TiO(2) are found to produce a Ti(3+) EPR spectrum identical to that of trapped electrons, which originate from photoexcitation of oxidized TiO(2). Efficient electron scavenging by adsorbed O(2) at 140 K is found to produce two long-lived O(2)(-) surface species associated with different cation surface sites. Reduced TiO(2), produced by annealing in vacuum, has been shown to be less efficient in hole trapping than oxidized TiO(2).  相似文献

The effects of deoxycholic acid (DCA) and 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) as additives on the photovoltaic performance of coumarin-dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells were investigated. DCA coadsorption improved both the photocurrent and photovoltage of the solar cells, even though it decreased the amount of dye adsorbed on the TiO2 electrode. The improved photocurrent may arise from suppression of the deactivation of the excited state via quenching processes between dye molecules or a more negative LUMO level of the dye in the presence of DCA, resulting in a high electron-injection yield from the dye into TiO2. The increased photovoltage is probably due to suppression of recombination between the injected electrons and I3- ions on the TiO2 surface (dark current). The addition of TBP to the electrolyte also markedly improved the photovoltage and fill factor of the solar cell, and consequently, the total conversion efficiency increased from 3.6% to 7.5%. FT-IR spectroscopy indicated that a large amount of TBP was adsorbed on the dye-coated TiO2 films in the presence of Li cations. This result suggests that TBP, like DCA, suppressed the dark current on the TiO2 surface, which resulted in the improved photovoltage.

The transport of photoinjected electrons in dye sensitised nanocrystalline TiO2 photovoltaic cells has been studied by intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). The existence of a dye-free TiO2 region adjacent to the substrate contact in some cells has been inferred from the characteristic shape of the IMPS response associated with delayed transport of photoinjected electrons across the dye-free region. The delay is absent in the case of cells with uniform dye distribution. The IMPS response of a cell with inhomogeneous dye loading was fitted using a simple two-layer model to describe the dye distribution. The results indicate that IMPS is a useful diagnostic tool to detect inhomogeneous dye distributions in nanocrystalline solar cells.  相似文献

The rate constant for the reaction of OH radicals with molecular hydrogen was measured using the flash photolysis resonance-fluorescence technique over the temperature range of 200-479 K. The Arrhenius plot was found to exhibit a noticeable curvature. Careful examination of all possible systematic uncertainties indicates that this curvature is not due to experimental artifacts. The rate constant can be represented by the following expressions over the indicated temperature intervals: k(H2)(250-479 K) = 4.27 x 10(-13) x (T/298)2.406 x exp[-1240/T] cm3 molecule(-1) (s-1) above T = 250 K and k(H2)(200-250 K) = 9.01 x 10(-13) x exp[-(1526 +/- 70)/T] cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1) below T = 250 K. No single Arrhenius expression can adequately represent the rate constant over the entire temperature range within the experimental uncertainties of the measurements. The overall uncertainty factor was estimated to be f(H2)(T) = 1.04 x exp[50 x /(1/T) - (1/298)/]. These measurements indicate an underestimation of the rate constant at lower atmospheric temperatures by the present recommendations. The global atmospheric lifetime of H2 due to its reaction with OH was estimated to be 10 years.  相似文献

By using bifunctional surface modifiers (SH-R-COOH), CdSe quantum dots (QDs) have been assembled onto mesoscopic TiO(2) films. Upon visible light excitation, CdSe QDs inject electrons into TiO(2) nanocrystallites. Femtosecond transient absorption as well as emission quenching experiments confirm the injection from the excited state of CdSe QDs into TiO(2) nanoparticles. Electron transfer from the thermally relaxed s-state occurs over a wide range of rate constant values between 7.3 x 10(9) and 1.95 x 10(11) s(-1). The injected charge carriers in a CdSe-modified TiO(2) film can be collected at a conducting electrode to generate a photocurrent. The TiO(2)-CdSe composite, when employed as a photoanode in a photoelectrochemical cell, exhibits a photon-to-charge carrier generation efficiency of 12%. Significant loss of electrons occurs due to scattering as well as charge recombination at TiO(2)/CdSe interfaces and internal TiO(2) grain boundaries.

Solvation and transfer dynamics of photoinjected electrons in thin ice film coadsorbed with CFCl3 were investigated by two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. Water molecules were found to solvate the photoinjected electrons within the first several hundred femtoseconds, thus stabilizing the electron with a lifetime of ca. 120 fs for 5 ML ice film grown on Ag(111). The significant lifetime decrease upon adsorption of CFCl3 on the ice film was attributed to dissociative electron transfer of the solvated electron based on the observed scission of the C-Cl bonds. Furthermore, the photodissociation rate of CFCl3 adsorbed directly on Ag(111) was observed to increase drastically owing to the transfer of the solvated electron when ice film was overlaid.  相似文献

Recent combined experimental and theoretical studies (Beck et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2004, 93, 036104) have provided evidence for Ti=O double-bonded titanyl groups on the reconstructed rutile TiO(2)(011)-(2 x 1) surface. The adsorption of water on the same surface is now investigated to further probe the properties of these groups, as well as to confirm their existence. Ultraviolet photoemission experiments show that water is adsorbed in molecular form at a sample temperature of 110 K. At the same time, the presence of a 3sigma state in the photoemission spectra and work function measurements indicate a significant amount of hydroxyls within the first monolayer of water. At room temperature, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) suggests that dissociated water is present, and about 30% of the surface active sites are hydroxylated. These findings are well explained by total energy density functional theory calculations and Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations for water adsorption on the titanyl model of TiO(2)(011)-(2 x 1). The theoretical results show that a mixed molecular/dissociative layer is the most stable configuration in the monolayer regime at low temperatures, while complete dissociation takes place at 250 K. The arrangement of the protonated mono-coordinated oxygens in the mixed molecular/dissociated layer is consistent with the observed short-range order of the hydroxyls in the STM images.  相似文献

A series of platinum-based sensitizers of the general type Pt(NN)(SS), where NN is 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine (dcbpy) or 4,7-dicarboxy-1,10-phenanthroline (dcphen) and SS is ethyl-2-cyano-3,3-dimercaptoacrylate (ecda), quinoxaline-2,3-dithiolate (qdt), 1,2-benzenedithiolate (bdt), or 3,4-toluenedithiolate (tdt), that have various ground-state oxidation potentials has been synthesized and anchored to nanocrystalline titanium dioxide electrodes for light-to-electricity conversion in regenerative photoelectrochemical cells with an I(-)/I(-)(3) acetonitrile electrolyte. The intense mixed-Pt/dithiolate-to-diimine charge-transfer absorption bands in this series could be tuned from 440 to 580 nm by choosing appropriate dithiolate ligands, and the highest occupied molecular orbitals varied by more than 500 mV. Spectrophotometric titration of the Pt(dcphen)(bdt) complex exhibits a ground-state pK(a) value of 3.2 +/- 0.1, which can be assigned to the protonation of the carboxylate group of the dcphen ligand. Binding of Pt(dcbpy)(qdt) to porous nanostructured TiO(2) films was analyzed using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, yielding an adsorption equilibrium constant of 4 x 10(5) M(-1). The amount of dye adsorbed at the surface of TiO(2) films was 9.5 x 10(-8) mol/cm(2), which is ca. 50% lower than the full monolayer coverage. The resulting complexes efficiently sensitized TiO(2) over a notably broad spectral range and showed an open-circuit potential of ca. 600 mV with an impressive fill factor of > 0.70, making them attractive candidates for solar energy conversion applications. The visible spectra of the 3,4-toluenedithiol-based sensitizers showed an enhanced red response, but the lower photocurrent efficiency observed for these sensitizers stems in part from a sluggish halide oxidation rate and a fast recombination of injected electrons with the oxidized dye.  相似文献

We report a comparison of charge transport and recombination dynamics in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) employing nanocrystalline TiO(2) and SnO(2) films and address the impact of these dynamics upon photovoltaic device efficiency. Transient photovoltage studies of electron transport in the metal oxide film are correlated with transient absorption studies of electron recombination with both oxidized sensitizer dyes and the redox couple. For all three processes, the dynamics are observed to be 2-3 orders of magnitude faster for the SnO(2) electrode. The origins of these faster dynamics are addressed by studies correlating the electron recombination dynamics to dye cations with chronoamperometric studies of film electron density. These studies indicate that the faster recombination dynamics for the SnO(2) electrodes result both from a 100-fold higher electron diffusion constant at matched electron densities, consistent with a lower trap density for this metal oxide relative to TiO(2), and from a 300 mV positive shift of the SnO(2) conduction band/trap states density of states relative to TiO(2). The faster recombination to the redox couple results in an increased dark current for DSSCs employing SnO(2) films, limiting the device open-circuit voltage. The faster recombination dynamics to the dye cation result in a significant reduction in the efficiency of regeneration of the dye ground state by the redox couple, as confirmed by transient absorption studies of this reaction, and in a loss of device short-circuit current and fill factor. The importance of this loss pathway was confirmed by nonideal diode equation analyses of device current-voltage data. The addition of MgO blocking layers is shown to be effective at reducing recombination losses to the redox electrolyte but is found to be unable to retard recombination dynamics to the dye cation sufficiently to allow efficient dye regeneration without resulting in concomitant losses of electron injection efficiency. We conclude that such a large acceleration of electron dynamics within the metal oxide films of DSSCs may in general be detrimental to device efficiency due to the limited rate of dye regeneration by the redox couple and discuss the implications of this conclusion for strategies to optimize device performance.  相似文献

We report the application of spectroelectrochemical techniques to compare the hole percolation dynamics of molecular networks of two ruthenium bipyridyl complexes adsorbed onto mesoporous, nanocrystalline TiO(2) films. The percolation dynamics of the ruthenium complex cis-di(thiocyanato)(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)-(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-tridecyl) ruthenium(II), N621, is compared with those observed for an analogous dye with an additional tri-phenyl amine (TPA) donor moiety, cis-di(thiocyanato)(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)-(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-bis(vinyltriphenylamine)) ruthenium(II), HW456. The in situ oxidation of these ruthenium complexes adsorbed to the TiO(2) films is monitored by cyclic voltammetry and voltabsorptometry, whilst the dynamics of hole (cation) percolation between adsorbed ruthenium complexes is monitored by potentiometric spectroelectrochemistry and chronoabsorptometry. The hole diffusion coefficient, D(eff), is shown to be dependent on the dye loading on the nanocrystalline TiO(2) film, with a threshold observed at ~60% monolayer surface coverage for both dyes. The hole diffusion coefficient of HW456 is estimated to be 2.6 × 10(-8) cm(2)/s, 20-fold higher than that obtained for the control N621, attributed to stronger electronic coupling between the TPA moieties of HW456 accelerating the hole percolation dynamics. The presence of mercuric ions, previously shown to bind to the thiocyanates of analogous ruthenium complexes, resulted in a quenching of the hole percolation for N621/TiO(2) films and an enhancement for HW456/TiO(2) films. These results strongly suggest that the hole percolation pathway is along the overlapped neighbouring -NCS groups for the N621 molecules, whereas in HW456 molecules cation percolation proceeds between intermolecular TPA ligands. These results are discussed in the context of their relevance to the process of dye regeneration in dye sensitised solar cells, and to the molecular wiring of wide bandgap inorganic materials for battery and sensing applications.  相似文献

The adsorption of water on perfect TiO(2)(110) surface is studied by quantum molecular dynamics simulation adopting a periodic model formed by five water molecules on a (5 x 1) surface unit cell of a five layer slab of TiO(2). The total simulation time is 3.2 ps. At about 1.3 ps, one water molecule dissociates with the help of other adsorbed waters and surface bridging oxygens. During the remaining 1.9 ps, the waters and OH groups vibrate, but no more dissociation or recombination is observed. By comparing recent experimental O1s photoemission (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) spectra of H(2)O/TiO(2)(110) to the computed spectrum of the adsorbate in the configurations supplied by the molecular dynamics simulation, the observed peaks can be attributed to different oxygen species. The proposed assignment of the main spectral features supports the occurrence of partial water dissociation (approximately 20%) also on a perfect TiO(2) surface.  相似文献

In the Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) the dye sensitizer carries out the light harvesting function and is therefore crucial in determining overall cell efficiency. In addition, the dye sensitizer can influence many of the key electron transfer processes occurring at the TiO(2)/dye/electrolyte interface which also determine efficiency. Dye structure can influence and drive forward electron injection into the conduction band of the TiO(2). Conversely, dye structure can help retard loss electron transfer processes such as charge recombination of injected electrons in the TiO(2) with dye cations and also recombination of these electrons with the electrolyte. Therefore tuning dye sensitizer light absorbing properties and control of the aforementioned electron transfer processes through structural design of the dye sensitizer is an important avenue through which optimization of DSSC efficiency should be pursued. In this critical review the latest work focusing on the design of dyes for efficient DSSCs is revised (111 references).  相似文献

The kinetics of the self-reaction of cyclohexyl radicals was studied by laser photolysis/photoionization mass spectroscopy. Overall rate constants were obtained in direct real-time experiments in the temperature region 303-520 K and at bath gas (helium with up to 5% of radical precursors) densities (3.00-12.0) × 10(16) molecules cm(-3). Cyclohexyl radicals were produced by a combination of the 193 nm photolysis of oxalyl chloride ((CClO)(2)) with the subsequent fast reaction of Cl atoms with cyclohexane, and their initial concentrations were determined from real-time profiles of HCl. The observed overall c-C(6)H(11) + c-C(6)H(11) rate constants demonstrate negative temperature dependence, which can be described by the following expressions: k(1) = 4.8 × 10(-12) exp(+542 K/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), with estimated uncertainty of 16% over the 303-520 K temperature range. The fraction of disproportionation equal to 41 ± 7% was determined at 305 K; analysis of earlier experimental determinations of the disproportionation-to-recombination branching ratio leads to recommending this room-temperature value for other temperatures. The corresponding temperature dependences of the recombination (1a, bicyclohexyl product) and the disproportionation (1b, cyclohexene and cyclohexane products) channels are k(1a) = 2.8 × 10(-12) exp(+542 K/T) and k(1b) = 2.0 × 10(-12) exp(+542 K/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1), with estimated uncertainties of 20% and 29%, respectively.  相似文献
