Steady and pulsatile flow and heat transfer in a channel lined with two porous layers subject to constant wall heat flux under local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) condition is numerically investigated. To do this, a physical boundary condition in the interface of porous media and clear region of the channel is derived. The objective of this work is, first, to assess the effects of local solid-to-fluid heat transfer (a criterion indicating on departure from local thermal equilibrium (LTE) condition), solid-to-fluid thermal conductivity ratio and porous layer thickness on convective heat transfer in steady condition inside a channel partially filled with porous media; second, to examine the impact of pulsatile flow on heat transfer in the same channel. The effects of LTNE condition and thermal conductivity ratio in pulsatile flow are also briefly discussed. It is observed that Nusselt number inside the channel increases when the problem is tending to LTE condition. Therefore, careless consideration of LTE may lead to overestimation of heat transfer. Solid-to-fluid thermal conductivity ratio is also shown to enhance heat transfer in constant porous media thickness. It is also revealed that an increase in the amplitude of pulsation may result in enhancement of Nusselt number, while Nusselt number has a minimum in a certain frequency for each value of amplitude.

The incompressible laminar flow of air and heat transfer in a channel with a backward-facing step is studied for steady cases and for pulsatile inlet conditions. For steady flows the influence of the inlet velocity profile, the height of the step and the Reynolds number on the reattachment length is investigated. A parabolic entrance profile was used for pulsatile flow. It was found with amplitude of oscillation of one by Re=100 that the primary vortex breakdown through one pulsatile cycle. The wall shear rate in the separation zone varied markedly with pulsatile flows and the wall heat transfer remained relatively constant. The time-average pulsatile heat transfer at the walls was greater as with steady flow with the same mean Reynolds number.

The plane one-dimensional and radially symmetric problems of injection of superheated steam into a porous medium saturated with gas are considered. Self-similar solutions are constructed on the assumption that in this case four zones are formed in the porous medium, namely, a gas flow zone, superheated and wet steam zones, and a water slug zone formed due to steam condensation. On the basis of the solution obtained, both the effects of the boundary pressure, mass flow rate, and temperature of the injected superheated steam and the effect of the initial state of the porous medium on the propagation of the hydrodynamic and thermal fields in the porous medium are studied.

This study investigates numerically the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics of a T-junction mixing, where a porous media flow is vertically discharged in a 3D fully developed channel flow. The fluid equations for the porous medium are solved in a pore structure level using an Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski turbulence model and validated with open literature data. Overall, two types of porous structures, consisted of square pores, are investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers: an in-line and a staggered pore structure arrangement. The flow patterns, including the reattachment length in the channel, the velocity field inside the porous medium as well as the fluctuation velocity at the interface, are found to be strongly affected by the velocity ratio between the transversely interacting flow streams. In addition, the heat transfer examination of the flow domain reveals that the temperature distribution in the porous structure is more uniform for the staggered array. The local heat transfer distributions inside the porous structure are also studied, and the general heat transfer rates are correlated in terms of area-averaged Nusselt number accounting for the effects of Reynolds number, velocity ratio as well as the geometrical arrangement of the porous structures.

The lattice Boltzmann method is carried out to investigate the heat transfer enhancement in a U-turn duct which is partially filled with a porous media. The porous layer is inserted at the core of the duct and is modeled using the Brinkman–Forchheimer assumptions. In order to validate the results, first a channel flow problem without any porous layer is compared with available data. Second, the porous Couette flow and partially porous channel flow are successfully compared with the studies of other researchers. Then, fluid flow in a clear U-turn duct is studied looking carefully at the velocity, curvature and rotation effects. Finally, the effects of porous layer thickness on the rate of heat transfer and pressure drop are investigated. Parametric studies are conducted to evaluate the effects of various parameters (i.e., Reynolds number, Darcy number, rotation number), highlighting their influences on the thermo-hydrodynamics behavior of the flow. The optimum values of porous layer thickness are presented for specific flow parameters.

We analyse the convection flow of a viscous fluid through a horizontal channel enclosing a fully saturated porous medium. The Galerkin finite element analysis is used to discuss the flow and heat transfer through the porous medium using serendipity elements. The velocity, the temperature distributions and the rate of heat transfer are analysed for variations in the governing parameters. The profiles at different vertical levels are asymmetric curves, exhibiting reversal flow everywhere except on the midplane. In a given porous medium, for fixed G or N, the temperature in the fluid region at any position in fluids with a higher Prandtl number, is much higher than in fluids with a lower Prandtl number. Likewise, other parameters being fixed, lesser the permeability of the medium, lower the temperature in the flow field. Nu reduces across the flow at all axial positions, while it enhances along the axial direction of the channel. Nu reduces with decrease in the Darcy parameter D, and thus lesser the permeability of the medium, lesser the rate of heat transfer across the boundary at any axial position of the channel.

This paper discusses the effects of a vertical a.c. electric field and heat transfer on a peristaltic flow of an incompressible dielectric viscoelastic fluid in a symmetric flexible channel. The mathematical modeling includes interactions among the electric field, flow field, and temperature. The perturbation solution of the modeled problem is derived by considering a small wave number. The influence of pertinent parameters is demonstrated and discussed. The numerical results show that the possibility of flow reversal increases near the lower bound of the channel and decreases near the upper bound of the channel as the electrical Rayleigh number, the Reynolds number, and the Weissenberg number increase, whereas the opposite effect is observed as the temperature parameter and the Weissenberg number increase. It is observed that the size of the trapped bolus decreases at the upper bound of the channel and increases at the lower bound of the channel with increasing electrical Rayleigh number, whereas the opposite effect is observed as the temperature parameter increases. The results also show that the trapped bolus in the case of an Oldroydian fluid is smaller than that for a Newtonian fluid.

This article is concerned with the effects of flow and migration of nanoparticles on heat transfer in a straight channel occupied with a porous medium. Investigation of force convective heat transfer of nanofluids in a porous channel has not been considered completely in the literature and this challenge is generally considered to be an open research topic that may require more study. The fully developed flow and steady Darcy?CBrinkman?CForchheimer equation is employed in porous channel. The thermal equilibrium model is assumed between nanofluid and solid phases. It is assumed that the nanoparticles are distributed non-uniformly inside the channel. As a result the volume fraction distribution equation is also coupled with governing equations. The effects of parameters such as Lewis number, Schmidt number, Brownian diffusion, and thermophoresis on the heat transfer are completely studied. The results show that the local Nusselt number is decreased when the Lewis number is increased. It is observed that as the Schmidt number is increased, the wall temperature gradient is decreased and as a consequence the local Nusselt number is decreased. The effects of Lewis number, Schmidt number, and modified diffusivity ratio on the volume fraction distribution are also studied and discussed.

Narrow channel heat transfer technique is a new developing heat transfer technique in recent years. As the temperature of droplet, steam and wall are decided by forced convection heat transfer between the steam and the wall, between the droplet and the wall, between the steam and the droplet and radiation heat transfer, which makes heat transfer mechanism of dispersed flow be difficultly interpretative. Dispersed flow in narrow annular channel is analyzed in the paper, investigating the influence of all kinds of heat transfer processes on dispersed flow, building annular channel dispersed flow model using thermodynamic non-equilibrium model. Calculation results show heat transfer is mainly controlled by heat transfer process between steam and wall. When temperature is low, radiation can be ignored on heat transfer coefficient calculation. The calculation of model can provide a reference for engineering application of steam generator, refrigeration system and so on.

A numerical method was developed for flows involving an interface between a homogeneous fluid and a porous medium. It is based on the finite volume method with body‐fitted and multi‐block grids. The Brinkman–Forcheimmer extended model was used to govern the flow in the porous medium region. At its interface, the flow boundary condition imposed is a shear stress jump, which includes the inertial effect, together with a continuity of normal stress. The thermal boundary condition is continuity of temperature and heat flux. The forced convection through a porous insert over a backward‐facing step is investigated. The results are presented with flow configurations for different Darcy numbers, 10?2 to 10?5, porosity from 0.2 to 0.8, Reynolds number from 10 to 800, and the ratio of insert length to channel height from 0.1 to 0.3. The heat transfer is improved by using porous insert. To enhance the heat transfer with minimal frictional losses, it is preferable to have a medium length of insert with medium Darcy number, and larger Reynolds number. The interfacial stress jump coefficients β and β1 were varied from ?1 to 1, and within this range the average and local lower‐wall Nusselt numbers are not sensitive to the parameters. The present investigation is devoted to the study of fully developed mixed convective flow through a vertical porous channel. The lateral variations of porosity and thermal diffusivity in the bed near the wall, are approximated by exponential functions. The correlation between permeability and porosity is brought through Kozney-Carman approximation. The volume averaged one dimensional low speed momentum equation proposed by Vafai is employed for the analysis of the problem. Results are obtained for steady heating of ascending cold fluid and steady cooling of ascending hot fluid. For the above physical situations it is observed that the heat transfer rate, and ratio of friction factor increases with increase in porous parameter, whereas the ratio of mass flow rate decreases with increase in porous parameter. The velocity profiles exhibit hydrodynamic channelling and peak velocity shifts towards the wall for higher values of the porous parameter. For steady heating of ascending could fluid increase in Rayleigh number enhances the heat transfer rate, and mass flow rate, while it reduces the ratio of friction factor. An opposite trend is observed for the case of steady cooling of ascending hot fluid.

Experiments were conducted to analyze flow boiling characteristics of water in a single brass microchannel of 25 mm length, 201 μm width, and 266 μm depth. Different heat flux conditions were tested for each of two different mass flow rates over three different values of inlet fluid temperature. Temporal and spatial surface temperature profiles were analyzed to show the relative effect of axial heat conduction on temperature rise along the channel length and the effect of flow regime transition on local surface temperature oscillation. Vapor bubble growth rate increased with increasing wall superheat. The slower a bubble grew, the further it was carried downstream by the moving liquid. Bubble growth was suppressed for increased mass flux while the vapor bubble was less than the channel diameter. The pressure spike of an elongating vapor bubble was shown to suppress the growth of a neighboring bubble by more than 50% of its volume. An upstream progression of the Onset of Bubble Elongation (OBE) was observed that began at the channel exit and progressed upstream. The effects of conjugate heat transfer were observed when different flow regime transitions produced different rates of progression for the elongation sequence. Instability was observed at lower heat fluxes for this single channel experiment than for similar studies with multiple channels.

This paper describes flow and heat transfer characteristics of laminar mixed-convection flows of water with sub-millimeter bubbles in a vertical channel. We use thermocouples and a particle tracking velocimetry technique for the temperature and velocity measurements. The working fluid used is tap water, and hydrogen bubbles generated by electrolysis of the water are used as the sub-millimeter bubbles. The Reynolds number of the main flow ranges from 100 to 200. The ratio of the heat transfer coefficient with sub-millimeter-bubble injection to that without injection (the heat transfer coefficient ratio) ranges from 1.24 to 1.38. The heat transfer coefficient ratio decreases with the increase in the Reynolds number. We conclude from velocity measurements that this decrease is mainly caused by a decrease in the advection effect due to sub-millimeter bubbles.

Fluid transport and the associated heat transfer through porous media is of immense importance because of its numerous practical applications. In view of the widespread applications of porous media flow, the present study attempts to investigate the forced convective heat transfer in the limiting condition for the flow through porous channel. There could be many areas, where heat transfer through porous channel attain some limiting conditions, thus, the analysis of limiting convective heat transfer is far reaching. The primary aim of the present study is focused on the limiting forced convection analysis considering the flow of Newtonian fluid between two asymmetrically heated parallel plates filled with saturated porous media. Utilizing a few assumptions, which are usually employed in the literature, an analytical methodology is executed to obtain the closed-form expression of the temperature profile, and in the following the expression of the limiting Nusselt numbers. The parametric variations of the temperature profile and the Nusselt numbers in different cases have been shown highlighting the influential role of different performance indexing parameters, like Darcy number, porosity of the media, and Brinkman number of forced convective heat transfer in porous channel. In doing so, the underlying physics of the transport characteristics of heat has been delineated in a comprehensive way. Moreover, a discussion has been made regarding an important feature like the onset of point of singularity as appeared on the variation of the Nusselt number from the consideration of energy balance in the flow field, and in view of second law of thermodynamics.

It is a well known effect that accumulation of non condensable gas causes a high heat transfer resistance during direct contact condensation in binary steam- nitrogen mixtures. But especially with high pressures and low water temperatures a second effect reduces heat transfer additionally. Fog forms within in the steam-nitrogen boundary layer and the steam condenses at the water droplets of the fog layer and reaches the cooling water interface no longer. The convective mass transfer to the cooling water interface diminishes and no heating up of the water layer takes place. This effect was observed with experiments at stratified two phase flow run with pressures up to 2.0 MPa. The interface temperature has proved to be the most important parameter for fog formation. The paper explains this effect by means of film theory. It offers correlations to quantify the effect and to calculate the minimum interface temperature to avoid spontaneous condensation. In this study, fully developed heat and fluid flow in a parallel plate channel partially filled with porous layer is analyzed both analytically and numerically. The porous layer is located at the center of the channel and uniform heat flux is applied at the walls. The heat and fluid flow equations for clear fluid and porous regions are separately solved. Continues shear stress and heat flux conditions at the interface are used to determine the interface velocity and temperature. The velocity and temperature profiles in the channel for different values of Darcy number, thermal conductivity ratio, and porous layer thickness are plotted and discussed. The values of Nusselt number and friction factor of a fully clear fluid channel (Nu cl = 4.12 and fRe cl = 24) are used to define heat transfer increment ratio (eth = Nup/Nucl)({\varepsilon _{\rm th} =Nu_{\rm p}/Nu_{\rm cl})} and pressure drop increment ratio (ep = fRep/fRecl )({\varepsilon_{\rm p} =fRe_{\rm p}/fRe_{\rm cl} )} and observe the effects of an inserted porous layer on the increase of heat transfer and pressure drop. The heat transfer and pressure drop increment ratios are used to define an overall performance (e = eth/ep)({\varepsilon = \varepsilon_{\rm th}/\varepsilon_{\rm p})} to evaluate overall benefits of an inserted porous layer in a parallel plate channel. The obtained results showed that for a partially porous filled channel, the value of e{\varepsilon} is highly influenced from Darcy number, but it is not affected from thermal conductivity ratio (k r) when k r > 2. For a fully porous material filled channel, the value of e{\varepsilon} is considerably affected from thermal conductivity ratio as the porous medium is in contact with the channel walls.

The present study deals with generalised Couette flow of two viscous, incompressible, immiscible fluids with heat transfer in presence of heat source through two straight parallel horizontal walls. The lower wall is bounded below, by a naturally permeable material of high porosity and the flow inside the porous medium is assumed to be of moderate permeability, modelled by Brinkman equation. The flow domain is divided into three zones to obtain analytical solutions of the momentum and energy equations. To link various flow regions, appropriate matching conditions have been used. The effects of permeability parameter, Reynolds number and viscous parameter on velocity field and the effects of Reynolds number, viscous parameter, permeability parameter, constant heat source and Brinkman number on temperature distribution in different zones are discussed graphically. The mass flow rate, skin-friction factor and rates of heat transfer at the upper boundary and porous interface are discussed with the help of tables.
