We report Pt-based alloys with early transition metals. Significant electrocatalysis occurs during oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the Pt-Y alloy electrodes, and the extent depends on the alloy composition. The Pt-Y alloy electrode activity is related to the d-band center position, and the lattice strain and stability for oxygen reduction reaction.

Dealloyed PtAg/C nanostructures, prepared by selective electrochemical etching of Ag in 0.5 M H2SO4 from a series of alloyed PtmAg/C samples with atomic Pt/Ag ratio m = 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5, were employed as cathode electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.5 M KOH. Compared with their as-prepared counterpart alloy catalysts, the dealloyed catalysts showed higher half-wave potentials (E1/2) and significantly higher Pt mass-specific activity (MSA) data. The intrinsic activity (IA) of Pt increased more or less after the dealloying treatment but was strongly dependent on the composition (m) of the alloyed sample. The Pt IA numbers were comparable for the dealloyed catalysts derived from PtmAg/C of m = 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5, which were nearly twice that for E-TEK Pt/C catalyst and 3 times that for the dealloyed catalyst derived from Pt0.1Ag/C.

Significant enhancement in the electrocatalytic activity of Pt particles toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been achieved by depositing them on a single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) support. Compared to a commercial Pt/carbon black catalyst, Pt/SWCNT films cast on a rotating disk electrode exhibit a lower onset potential and a higher electron-transfer rate constant for oxygen reduction. Improved stability of the SWCNT support is also confirmed from the minimal change in the oxygen reduction current during repeated cycling over a period of 36 h. These studies open up ways to utilize SWCNT/Pt electrocatalyst as a cathode in the proton-exchange-membrane-based hydrogen and methanol fuel cells.

Electrocatalysis of oxygen reduction using Pt nanoparticles supported on functionalized graphene sheets (FGSs) was studied. FGSs were prepared by thermal expansion of graphite oxide. Pt nanoparticles with average diameter of 2 nm were uniformly loaded on FGSs by impregnation methods. Pt-FGS showed a higher electrochemical surface area and oxygen reduction activity with improved stability as compared with the commercial catalyst. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical characterization suggest that the improved performance of Pt-FGS can be attributed to smaller particle size and less aggregation of Pt nanoparticles on the functionalized graphene sheets.

A simple method for the preparation of PdCo@Pd core-shell nanoparticles supported on carbon based on an adsorbate-induced surface segregation effect has been developed. The stability of these PdCo@Pd nanoparticles and their electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were enhanced by decoration with a small amount of Pt deposited via a spontaneous displacement reaction. The facile method described herein is suitable for large-scale, lower-cost production and significantly lowers the Pt loading and thus the cost. The as-prepared PdCo@Pd and Pd-decorated PdCo@Pd nanocatalysts have a higher methanol tolerance than Pt/C in the ORR and are promising cathode catalysts for fuel cell applications.

Developing noble metal-free catalysts with low cost, high performance and stability for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) in fuel cells is of great interest to promote sustainable energy devices. In this review, we summarized noble metal-free catalysts for ORR,including non-noble metal-based and heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials. Mesoporous structure, homogeneous distribution of nanocrystals and synergistic effect of carbon base and nanocrystals/doped heteroatoms have great effect on the ORR property. The noble metal-free nanomaterials showed comparable catalytic property, better stability and methanol tolerance than commercial platinum(Pt)-based catalysts, showing great potential as substitutes for noble metal-based catalysts. In addition, the challenges and chances of developing noble metal-free ORR catalysts are also discussed.

To design efficient and low-cost core-shell electrocatalysts with an ultrathin platinum shell, the balance between platinum dosage and durability in acid solution is of great importance. In the present work, trimetallic Au@PdPt core-shell nanoparticles(NPs)with Pd/Pt molar ratios ranging from 0.31:1 to 4.20:1 were synthesized based on the Au catalytic reduction strategy and the subsequent metallic replacement reaction. When the Pd/Pt molar ratio is 1.19:1(designated as Au@Pd_(1.19) Pt_1 NPs), the superior electrochemical activity and stability were achieved for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) in acid solution. Especially, the specific and mass activities of Au@Pd_(1.19) Pt_1 NPs are 1.31 and 6.09 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C catalyst. In addition, the Au@Pd_(1.19) Pt_1 NPs presented a good durability in acid solution. After 3000 potential cycles between 0.1 and 0.7 V(vs. Ag/AgCl), the oxygen reduction activity is almost unchanged. This study provides a simple strategy to synthesize highperformance trimetallic ORR electrocatalyst for fuel cells.

Metallic phosphides as a crucial class of metal-like compounds show high electric conductivity and electrochemical properties. It is of significant benefit to understanding the relationship between the electrocatalytic performance and phosphating degree of precursors. In this work, using Co3O4@SiO2 as precursor, core-shell structured CoP@SiO2 nanoreactors with outstanding oxygen evolution reaction performance were synthesized through a facile calcination method. The electrocatalytic performance of CoP@SiO2 modified electrode that treated with 500 mg NaH2PO2 was greatly enhanced. The obtained product displays a low overpotential of 280 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel value 89 mV/dec in alkaline conditions. The easy available CoP@SiO2 with outstanding catalytic performance and stability possesses huge potential in future electrochemical applications.

One of the major limitations yet to the global implementation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is the cathode catalyst. The development of efficient platinum-free catalysts is the key issue to solve the problem of slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and high cost. We report a promising catalyst for ORR prepared through the annealing treatment under inert conditions of the cobalt-benzotriazole (Co-BTA) complex supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The N-rich benzotriazole precursor was chosen based on its ability to complex Co(II) ions and generate under annealing highly reactive radicals able to tune the physicochemical properties of CNTs. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to follow the surface structure changes and highlight the active electrocatalytic sites towards the ORR. To achieve further evaluation of the catalysts in acidic medium, voltamperometry, rotating disk electrode (RDE), rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) and half-cell measurements were performed. The resulting catalysts (Co/N/CNTs) all show catalytic activity towards the ORR, the most active one resulting from annealing at 700 °C. The overall electron transfer number for the catalyzed ORR was determined to be ~3.7 with no change upon the catalyst loading, suggesting that the ORR was dominated by a 4e(-) transfer process. The results indicate a promising alternative cathode catalyst for ORR in fuel cells, although its performance is still lower (overpotential around 110 mV evaluated by RDE and RRDE) than the reference Pt/C catalyst.

Although nitrogen doped CNTs (N-CNTs) are considered as a promising alternative to platinized carbon for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), the origin of the enhanced ORR activity with N-CNTs is not clear at present. Among several plausible reasons, the exposure of edge plane and creation of impurity band/surface states near the Fermi level are considered as major causes behind the catalytic activity. However, CNTs without nitrogen doping are not known to catalyze the ORR. In this work, we study the ORR activity of functionalized carbon nanotubes with different functional groups, such as sulfonic acid and phosphonic acid, in order to understand the role of surface functionalities in catalyzing the reaction. Functionalized CNTs show significantly enhanced activity towards the ORR, while CNTs without such surface functional groups do not reveal any such special ORR activity. Linear sweep voltammetry experiments with different rotation rates show diffusion controlled limiting current values for functionalized CNTs, and the 'n' values derived from Koutecky-Levich plots are 3.3 and 1.7 for S-MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs, respectively. This work demonstrates the ORR activity of functionalized MWCNTs, which opens up new strategies for electrocatalyst design in PEMFCs.

Cost-effective atomically dispersed Fe-N-P-C complex catalysts are promising to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)and replace Pt catalysts in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. However,it remains a challenge to increase the number of atomically dispersed active sites on these catalysts. Here we report a highly efficient impregnation-pyrolysis method to prepare effective ORR electrocatalysts with large amount of atomically dispersed Fe active sites from biomass. Two types of active catalyst centers were identified, namely atomically dispersed Fe sites and FexP particles. The ORR rate of the atomically dispersed Fe sites is three orders of magnitude higher than it of FexP particles.A linear correlation between the amount of the atomically dispersed Fe and the ORR activity was obtained, revealing the major contribution of the atomically dispersed Fe to the ORR activity. The number of atomically dispersed Fe increases as the Fe loading increased and reaching the maximum at 1.86 wt%Fe,resulting in the maximum ORR rate.Optimized Fe-N-P-C complex catalyst was used as the cathode catalyst in a homemade Zn-air battery and good performance of an energy density of 771 Wh kgZn-1,a power density of 92.9 m W cm-2 at 137 m A cm-2 and an excellent durability were exhibited.

The development of nonprecious catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is important for the commercialization of the alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). Herein, we prepared a kind of Co-based nanoparticles (NPs) with a core-shell (Co@CoO) structure supported on the N-doped graphene (Co@CoO/NG) as an efficient ORR catalyst via simply pyrolyzing the ZIF-67 anchored on the synthesized graphene oxide (GO). The catalytic activity for ORR of the obtained Co@CoO/NG is comparable with the state-of-art Pt/C catalyst in terms of the onset and half-wave potential in the alkaline solution. In addition, the Co@CoO/NG exhibited an excellent ORR durability and antimethanol activity compared to the commercial Pt/C. This research would provide a simple strategy to prepare the high-performance nonprecious metal-based catalysts for AFCs.

Cathode catalysts for direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) must have high catalytic activity for the oxy‐gen reduction reaction (ORR), low cost, and high tolerance to the presence of methanol or ethanol. Pt is the benchmark catalyst for this application owing to its excellent electrocatalytic activity, but its high cost and low tolerance to the organic fuel permeating through the membrane have hindered the commercialization of DAFCs. Herein we present a facile synthesis route to obtain organic fuel‐tolerant Zr‐ and Ta‐based catalysts supported on carbon. This method consists of a simple precipitation of metal precursors followed by a heat treatment. X‐ray diffraction analyses confirmed that the obtained samples were crystalline ZrO2?x and Na2Ta8O21?x having crystallite sizes of 26 and 32 nm, respectively. The thermal treatment effectively increased the activity of the catalysts to‐wards the ORR, although further optimization is necessary. Both catalysts exhibited a high tolerance to the presence of methanol with only a moderate reduction in ORR activity even at high methanol concentration (0.5 mol/L).
