A New Continuation Method for the Study of Nonlinear Equations at Resonance

A new continuation theorem for the existence of solutions to an equation Lu = N(u), where N is a nonlinear continuous operator and L a linear Fredholm noninvertible one, is proved. The continuation which makes N collapse is replaced by a deformation of L to an invertible linear operator. This implies results concerning sublinear N, N having a linear growth at infinity and superlinear N. These generalize the classical theorems on the solvability of semilinear elliptic BVP′s at resonance. The periodic solutions of Liénard equations are studied.

On Nonlinear Hyperbolic Functional Differential Equations

In this paper, existence of weak solutions of second order evolution equations is proved and some properties of the solutions are shown. The results are applied to higher order nonlinear hyperbolic functional differential equations.     

Higher-Order Method for the Solution of a Nonlinear Scalar Equation

A new iterative method to find the root of a nonlinear scalar function f is proposed. The method is based on a suitable Taylor polynomial model of order n around the current point x _k and involves at each iteration the solution of a linear system of dimension n. It is shown that the coefficient matrix of the linear system is nonsingular if and only if the first derivative of f at x _k is not null. Moreover, it is proved that the method is locally convergent with order of convergence at least n + 1. Finally, an easily implementable scheme is provided and some numerical results are reported.

Second Order Scalar Functional Differential Equations with Piecewise Constant Arguments

The study of functional differential equations with piecewise constant arguments usually results in a study of certain related difference equations. In this paper we consider certain neutral functional differential equations of this type and the associated difference equations. We give conditions under which such equations with almost periodic time dependence will have unique almost periodic solutions, and for certain autonomous cases, we obtain certain stability results and also conditions for chaotic behavior of solutions. We are particularly concerned with such equations which are partially discretized versions of non-forced Duffing equations.     

Homoclinic Orbits of Nonlinear Functional Difference Equations

In this paper, by using the critical point theory, we obtain the existence of a nontrivial homoclinic orbit which decays exponentially at infinity for nonlinear difference equations containing both advance and retardation without any periodic assumptions. Moreover, if the nonlinearity is an odd function, the existence of an unbounded sequence of nontrivial homoclinic orbits which decay exponentially at infinity is obtained.
