In (X. Claeys and R. Hiptmair, Integral equations on multi-screens. Integral Equ Oper Theory, 77(2):167–197, 2013) we developed a framework for the analysis of boundary integral equations for acoustic scattering at so-called multi-screens, which are arbitrary arrangements of thin panels made of impenetrable material. In this article we extend these considerations to boundary integral equations for electromagnetic scattering. We view tangential multi-traces of vector fields from the perspective of quotient spaces and introduce the notion of single-traces and spaces of jumps. We also derive representation formulas and establish key properties of the involved potentials and related boundary operators. Their coercivity will be proved using a splitting of jump fields. Another new aspect emerges in the form of surface differential operators linking various trace spaces.  相似文献

A complex number λ is an extended eigenvalue of an operator A if there is a nonzero operator X such that AX = λ XA. We characterize the set of extended eigenvalues, which we call extended point spectrum, for operators acting on finite dimensional spaces, finite rank operators, Jordan blocks, and C0 contractions. We also describe the relationship between the extended eigenvalues of an operator A and its powers. As an application, we show that the commutant of an operator A coincides with that of An, n ≥ 2, nN if the extended point spectrum of A does not contain any n–th root of unity other than 1. We study the nonrelativistic limit of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation and prove that the wave operators, the inverses of them, and the scattering operator for the naturally modulated equation converge to those for the singular limit, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.  相似文献

To overcome the non-uniqueness problem arising in integral equationsfor the exterior boundary-value problems for the scalar Helmholtzequation, Ursell and Jones suggested adding a series of outgoingwaves to the free-space fundamental solution. The present papergives an extension of this approach to the case of the reducedMaxwell equations of electromagnetic scattering. Assuming that the motions of stars depart only slightly from circular, finite closed systems of stellar hydrodynamic equations are obtained for a disk galaxy by taking moments of the collisionless Boltzmann equation. We prove that the standard second‐kind integral equation formulation of the exterior Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation is coercive (i.e., sign‐definite) for all smooth convex domains when the wavenumber k is sufficiently large. (This integral equation involves the so‐called combined potential, or combined field, operator.) This coercivity result yields k‐explicit error estimates when the integral equation is solved using the Galerkin method, regardless of the particular approximation space used (and thus these error estimates apply to several hybrid numerical‐asymptotic methods developed recently). Coercivity also gives k‐explicit bounds on the number of GMRES iterations needed to achieve a prescribed accuracy when the integral equation is solved using the Galerkin method with standard piecewise‐polynomial subspaces. The coercivity result is obtained by using identities for the Helmholtz equation originally introduced by Morawetz in her work on the local energy decay of solutions to the wave equation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the electromagnetic scattering by a periodic chiral structure. The media is homogeneous and the structure is periodic in one direction and invariant in another direction. The electromagnetic fields inside the chiral medium are governed by Maxwell equations together with the Drude-BornFedorov equations. We simplify the problem to a two-dimensional scattering problem and discuss the existence and the uniqueness of solutions by an integral equation approach. We show that for all but possibly a discrete set of wave numbers, the integral equation has a unique solution.  相似文献

We are concerned with the numerical treatment of boundary integral equations by the adaptive wavelet boundary element method. In particular, we consider the second kind Fredholm integral equation for the double layer potential operator on patchwise smooth manifolds contained in ?3. The corresponding operator equations are treated by adaptive implementations that are in complete accordance with the underlying theory. The numerical experiments demonstrate that adaptive methods really pay off in this setting. The observed convergence rates fit together very well with the theoretical predictions based on the Besov regularity of the exact solution.  相似文献
