A series of isomeric poly(thioether ether imide)s (PTEIs) containing both thioether and ether linkages were prepared by nucleophilic substitution reaction of isomeric bis(chlorophthalimide)s with 4,4′‐thiobisbenzenethiol. The inherent viscosities of these polymers were in the range of 0.40–0.56 dL/g in m‐cresol at 30°C. The Tg values of PTEIs were 196–236°C; T5% values reached up to 509–529°C in nitrogen and 508–534°C in air, which indicated this kind of polyimide possessed excellent thermal stability. The hydrolytic stability was arranged in the order: a > b > c > d > e, and improved with increasing the content of 3‐substituted phthalimide unit in the polymer backbone. Flexible films could be cast from the polymer solution with a solid content of 10%. The PTEI films exhibited good mechanical properties with tensile strengths of 90–104 MPa, elongations at break of 6.6–7.9%, and tensile moduli of 2.3–2.6 GPa. The minimum complex viscosity of PTEIs c was about 100 Pa·s at 310°C and the minimum melt viscosity of PTEIs (a–e) decreased with increasing the content of unsymmetrical 3,4′‐substituted phthalimide units. 3,3′‐Dichloro‐N,N′‐biphthalimide (3,3′‐DCBPI), 3,4′‐dichloro‐N,N′‐biphthalimide (3,4′‐DCBPI), and 4,4′‐dichloro‐N,N′‐biphthalimide (4,4′‐DCBPI) were synthesized from 3‐ or 4‐chlorophthalic anhydrides and hydrazine in glacial acetic acid. The yield of 3,3′‐DCBPI (90%) was much higher than that of 4,4′‐DCBPI (33%) because of the better stability of the intermediate, 3‐chloro‐N‐aminophthalimide, and 3,3′‐DCBPI. A series of hydrazine‐based polyimides were prepared from isomeric DCBPIs and 4,4′‐thiobisbenzenethiol (TBBT) in N,N‐dimethylacetamide in the presence of tributylamine. Inherent viscosity of these polymers was in the range of 0.51–0.69 dL/g in 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NMP) at 30 °C. These polyimides were soluble in 1,1,2,2‐terachloroethane, NMP, and phenols. The 5% weight‐loss temperatures (T5%s) of the polymers were near 450 °C in N2. Their glass‐transition temperatures (Tgs) determined by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry increased according to the order of polyimides based on 4,4′‐DCBPI, 3,4′‐DCBPI, and 3,3′‐DCBPI. The hydrolytic stability of these polymers was measured under acid, basic, and neutral conditions and the results indicated that the order was 3,3′‐DCBPI/TBBT > 3,4′‐DCBPI/TBBT > 4,4′‐DCBPI/TBBT. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel poly(thioether ether ketone imide)s (PTEKIs) bearing the thioether and ketone groups with high molecular weights (Mw: 87,800–150,100 g/mol) were synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction. The polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT‐IR), 1H NMR, GPC, and elemental analysis. The composition of the copolymers varied systematically in order to study its relation with polymer properties. Increase in the content of 3‐substituted phthalimide moiety in the polymer backbone improves the solubility in tested solvents, and increases the glass transition temperature (Tg), whereas copolymers with high content of 3‐substituted phthalimide demonstrated to be inferior thermal stability. The PTEKI films also exhibited good optical transparency, including the cutoff wavelengths lower than 400 nm and transmittances higher than 77% at 450 nm. A novel bis(ether anhydride) monomer, 2′,5′‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)‐p‐terphenyl dianhydride, was synthesized from the nitro displacement of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile by the phenoxide ion of 2′,5′‐dihydroxy‐p‐terphenyl, followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile) and cyclodehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). A series of new poly(ether imide)s bearing laterally attached p‐terphenyl groups were prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) with various aromatic diamines via a conventional two‐stage process that included ring‐opening polyaddition to form the poly(amic acid)s followed by thermal or chemical imidization to the poly(ether imide)s. The inherent viscosities of the poly(amic acid) precursors were in the range of 0.62–1.26 dL/g. Most of the poly(ether imide)s obtained from both routes were soluble in polar organic solvents, such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide. All the poly(ether imide)s could afford transparent, flexible, and strong films with high tensile strengths. The glass‐transition temperatures of these poly(ether imide)s were recorded as between 214 and 276 °C by DSC. The softening temperatures of all the poly(ether imide) films stayed in the 207–265 °C range according to thermomechanical analysis. For all the polymers significant decomposition did not occur below 500 °C in nitrogen or air atmosphere. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 1008–1017, 2004  相似文献

A new synthetic route to 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA (where BTDA is benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride), an isomer of 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA and 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA, is described. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis of 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA has shown that this dianhydride has a bent and noncoplanar structure. The polymerizations of 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA with 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4′‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene (TPEQ) have been investigated with a conventional two‐step process. A trend of cyclic oligomers forming in the reaction of 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA and ODA has been found and characterized with IR, NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. Films based on 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA/TPEQ can only be obtained from corresponding polyimide (PI) solutions prepared by chemical imidization because those from their polyamic acids by thermal imidization are brittle. PIs from 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA have lower inherent viscosities and worse thermal and mechanical properties than the corresponding 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA‐ and 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA‐based PIs. PIs from 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA and 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA are amorphous, whereas those from 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA have some crystallinity, according to wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Furthermore, PIs from 2,2′,3,3′‐BTDA have better solubility, higher glass‐transition temperatures, and higher melt viscosity than those from 2,3′,3′,4′‐BTDA and 3,3′,4,4′‐BTDA. Model compounds have been prepared to explain the order of the glass‐transition temperatures found in the isomeric PI series. The isomer effects on the PI properties are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 2130–2144, 2004  相似文献

2,2′,3,3′‐Oxydiphthalic dianhydride (2,2′,3,3′‐ODPA) and 2,3,3′,4′‐ODPA were synthesized from 3‐chlorophthalic anhydride with 2,3‐xylenol and 3,4‐xylenol, respectively. Their structures were determined via single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. A series of polyimides derived from isomeric ODPAs with several diamines were prepared in dimethylacetamide (DMAc) with the conventional two‐step method. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight spectra showed that the polymerization of 2,2′,3,3′‐ODPA with 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) has a greater trend to form cyclic oligomers than that of 2,3,3′,4′‐ODPA. Both 2,2′,3,3′‐ODPA and 2,3,3′,4′‐ODPA based polyimides have good solubility in polar aprotic solvents such as DMAc, dimethylformamide, and N‐methylpyrrolidone. The 5% weight‐loss temperatures of all polyimides were obtained near 500 °C in air. Their glass‐transition temperatures measured by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis or differential scanning calorimetry decreased according to the order of polyimides on the basis of 2,2′,3,3′‐ODPA, 2,3,3′,4′‐ODPA, and 3,3′,4,4′‐ODPA. The wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction of all polyimide films from isomeric ODPAs and ODA showed some certain extent of crystallization after stretching. Rheological properties revealed that polyimide (2,3,3′,4′‐ODPA/ODA) has a comparatively lower melt viscosity than its isomers, which indicated its better melt processability. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new bis(ether anhydride), 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl‐2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propane dianhydride ( 3 ), was prepared in three steps: the nitro displacement of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxy‐3,5‐dimethylphenyl)propane, the alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile), and the subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). A series of new highly soluble poly(ether imide)s with tetramethyl and isopropylidene groups were prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) 3 with various diamines by a conventional two‐stage synthesis including polyaddition and chemical cyclodehydration. The resulting poly(ether imide)s had inherent viscosities of 0.54–0.73 dL g?1. Gel permeation chromatography measurements revealed that the polymers had number‐average and weight‐average molecular weights of up to 54,000 and 124,000, respectively. All the polymers showed typical amorphous diffraction patterns. All of the poly(ether imide)s showed excellent solubility and were readily dissolved in various solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N,N‐dimethylformamide, pyridine, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, and even chloroform. Most of the polymers could be dissolved with chloroform concentrations as high as 30 wt %. These polymers had glass‐transition temperatures of 244–282 °C. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that all polymers were stable, with 10% weight losses recorded above 463 °C in nitrogen. These transparent, tough, and flexible polymer films were obtained through solution casting from N,N‐dimethylacetamide solutions. These polymer films had tensile strengths of 81–102 MPa and tensile moduli of 1.8–2.0 GPa. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 2556–2563, 2002  相似文献

A series of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyurethanes (LCPUs) were synthesized by the polyaddition reactions of 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate (2,4‐TDI) with 4,4′‐bis(6‐hydroxyhexoxy)biphenyl (BHHBP) and aliphatic diol. The intrinsic viscosities of the polymers were measured by Ubbelohde viscometer, and the chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR). The LCPUs were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The intrinsic viscosities were 0.56–0.83 dl/g. According to the melting point (Tm) and the isotropic temperature (Ti) of the LCPUs, the temperature range of the liquid crystalline phase became wider with increased number of methylene spacers in the polyurethane. The LCPUs exhibited a nematic phase with a threaded texture and had a wide mesophase temperature range. The decomposition temperature of the LCPUs was >300°C. On WAXD, the LCPUs give a dispersing peak at 2θ ≈ 20°, and a strong diffraction peak at 2θ ≈ 25°. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

New aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride, having isopropylidene and bromo‐substituted arylene ether structure 3,3′,5,5′‐tetrabromo‐2,2‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propane dianhydride, was synthesized by the reaction of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with 3,3′,5,5′‐tetrabromobisphenol A, followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile) and subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). The novel aromatic polyetherimides having inherent viscosities up to 1.04 dL g−1 were obtained by either a one‐step or a conventional two‐step polymerization process starting from the bis(ether anhydride) and various aromatic diamines. All the polyimides showed typical amorphous diffraction patterns. Most of the polyimides were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), pyridine, and even in less polar solvents like chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THF). These aromatic polyimides had glass transition temperatures in the range of 256–303°C, depending on the nature of the diamine moiety. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that all polymers were stable, with 10% weight loss recorded above 470°C in nitrogen. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two series of fluorinated polyimides were prepared from 2,2′‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)biphenyl ( 2 ) and 2,2′‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)‐1,1′‐binaphthyl ( 4 ) with various aromatic dianhydrides via a conventional, two‐step procedure that included a ring‐opening polyaddition to give poly(amic acid)s, followed by chemical or thermal cyclodehydration. The inherent viscosities of the polyimides ranged from 0.54 to 0.73 and 0.19 to 0.36 dL/g, respectively. All the fluorinated polyimides were soluble in many polar organic solvents, such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide and N‐methylpyrrolidone, and afforded transparent and light‐colored films via solution‐casting. These polyimides showed glass‐transition temperatures in the ranges of 222–280 and 257–351 °C by DSC, softening temperatures in the range of 264–301 °C by thermomechanical analysis, and a decomposition temperature for 10% weight loss above 520 °C both in nitrogen and air atmospheres. The polyimides had low moisture absorptions of 0.23–0.58%, low dielectric constants of 2.84–3.61 at 10 kHz, and an ultraviolet–visible absorption cutoff wavelength at 351–434 nm. Copolyimides derived from the same dianhydrides with an equimolar mixture of 4,4′‐oxydianiline and diamine 2 or 4 were also prepared and characterized. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of isomeric bis(chlorophthalimide)s (BCPIs) were conveniently prepared from 3-chlorophthalic anhydride, 4-chlorophthalic anhydride, and mixtures thereof. Polymerization of BCPIs with bis(4-mercaptophenyl) sulfone (BMPS) proceeded smoothly in the presence of tributylamine, from which a class of isomeric poly(thioether ether sulfone imide)s (PTESIs) with inherent viscosities of 0.45-0.82 dL/g were obtained. The solubility, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of these polymers were characterized. Compared to the PTESIs derived from single BCPIs, i.e., 3,3′-, 3,4′-, or 4,4′-BCPIs, the PTESIs derived from mixed BCPIs showed better solubility and higher storage modulus. These PTESIs also demonstrated good thermal stability, giving only 5% weight loss at temperature of 490 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of these isomeric PTESIs were between 242 and 265 °C, and were increased with increasing of the ratio of 3-chlorophthalimide unit in the polymer backbone.  相似文献

A series of novel polyimides are synthesized by the reaction of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonete-tracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) with four methylthiomethyl-substituted aromatic diamines: 3-methylthiomethyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane ( I ), 3,3′-dimethylthiomethyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane ( II ), 3,3′,5-trimethylthiomethyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane ( III ), and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylthiomethyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane ( IV ) in refluxing m-cresol. The polyimide of diamine I and BTDA carrying only one pendant methylthiomethyl group in a repeating unit is readily soluble in m-cresol, chloroform, and polar aprotic solvents. Increasing the number of the pendant group results in higher solubility. These fully imidized polyimides are also intrinsically photosensitive. The fraction of photoreactive benzophenone sites that relates to the rate and degree of completion of photocrosslinking reaction increases systematically with the increase of the pendant group content. As the average number of the pendant group in a repeating unit reaches 3, 63% of benzophenone sites are found to be photoreactive. These methylthiomethyl-substituted polyimides possess moderate tensile strength which falls in the range of 67–81 MPa. As a result of the increase of methylthiomethyl content, this type of polyimide reveals higher glass transition temperature but lower thermal stability due to the considerable dimension of the pendant group and the ready cleavage nature of the C? S bond. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of molecular‐weight‐controlled fluorinated aromatic polyimides were synthesized through the polycondensation of a fluorinated aromatic diamine, 1,4‐bis(4′‐amino‐2′‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzene, with 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride in the presence of phthalic anhydride as the molecular‐weight‐controlling and end‐capping agent. Experimental results demonstrated that the resulting polyimides could melt at temperatures of 250–300 °C to give high flowing molten fluids, which were suitable for melt molding to give strong and flexible polyimide sheets. Moreover, the aromatic polyimides also showed good solubility both in polar aprotic solvents and in common solvents. Polyimide solutions with solid concentrations higher than 25 wt % could be prepared with relatively low viscosity and were stable in storage at the ambient temperature. High‐quality polyimide films could be prepared via the casting of the polyimide solutions onto glass plates, followed by baking at a relatively low temperature. The molten behaviors and organosolubility of the molecular‐weight‐controlled aromatic polyimides depended significantly on the polymer molecular weights. Both the melt‐molded polyimide sheets and the solution‐cast polymer films exhibited outstanding combined mechanical and thermal properties. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(ether imide)s (PEIs), III a–k , with light color and good physical properties were prepared from 1,4‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxypheoxy)‐2,5‐di‐tert‐butylbenzene dianhydride ( I ) with various aromatic diamines ( II a–k ) via a conventional two‐stage procedure that included a ring‐opening polyaddition to yield poly(amic acid)s (PAA), followed by thermal imidization to the PEI. The intermediate PAA had inherent viscosities in the range of 1.00–1.53 dL g?1. Most of the PEIs showed excellent solubility in chlorinated solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, and m‐cresol, but did not easily dissolve in dimethyl sulfoxide and amide‐type polar solvents. The III series had tensile strengths of 96–116 MPa, an elongation at break of 7–8%, and initial moduli of 2.0–2.5 GPa. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg) and softening temperatures (Ts's) of the III series were recorded between 232 and 285 °C and 216–279 °C, respectively. The decomposition temperatures for 10% weight loss all occurred above 511 °C in nitrogen and 487 °C in air. The III series showed low dielectric constants (2.71–3.54 at 1 MHz), low moisture absorption (0.18–0.66 wt %), and was light‐colored with a cutoff wavelength below 380 nm and a low yellow index (b*) values of 7.3–14.8. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4,4′-Binaphthyl-1,1′,8,8′-tetracarboxylic dianhydride was synthesized from 4-chloro-1,8-naphthalic anhydride and polymerized with aromatic and pliphatic diamines in m-cresol or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP). The polyimides, except for two derived from p-phenylenediamine and hydrazine, are soluble in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and NMP. Their intrinsic viscosities ranged from 0.36 to 2.20 dL/g. The polymers showed excellent thermal and thermooxidative stabilities and displayed weak glass transition temperatures. Young's moduli of some polymer films were in the range of 2.5 and 5.4 GPa at 30°C. The aliphatic polyimides exhibited a stronger fluorescence than the aromatic polyimides. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Starting with 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and methyl aminobenzoate, we synthesized a novel rodlike imide‐containing monomer, N,N′‐bis[p‐(methoxy carbonyl) phenyl]‐biphenyl‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxydiimide (BMBI). The polycondensation of BMBI with dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol yielded a series of copoly(ester imide)s based on the BMBI‐modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) backbone. Compared with PET, these BMBI‐modified polyesters had higher glass‐transition temperatures and higher stiffness and strength. In particular, the poly(ethylene terephthalate imide) PETI‐5, which contained 5 mol % of the imide moieties, had a glass‐transition temperature of 89.9 °C (11 °C higher than the glass‐transition temperature of PET), a tensile modulus of 869.4 MPa (20.2 % higher than that of PET), and a tensile strength of 80.8 MPa (38.8 % higher than that of PET). Therefore, a significant reinforcing effect was observed in these imide‐modified polyesters, and a new approach to higher property polyesters was suggested. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel diamine, 4,4‐bis(p‐aminophenoxymethyl)‐1‐cyclohexene (CHEDA), was synthesized from 4,4‐bis(hydroxymethyl)‐1‐cyclohexene and p‐chloronitrobenzene by nucleophilic aromatic substitution and subsequent catalytic reduction of the intermediate dinitro compound. A series of aromatic polyimides were prepared from CHEDA and commercial dianhydrides with varying flexibility and electronic character in two‐step direct polycondensation reactions. High molecular weight polyimides with intrinsic viscosities between 0.57 and 10.2 dL/g were obtained. Most of these polyimides, excluding those from PMDA and BPDA, were soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as NMP and DMAc, and many were also soluble in CHCl3 and THF. DSC analysis revealed glass transitions in the range of 190 to 250°C. No significant weight losses occurred below 450°C in nitrogen and 350°C in air. Bromination and epoxidation of cyclohexene double bond in CHDEA–6FDA (3e) were investigated as examples of possible polymer modifications. Benzophenone‐containing, anhydride‐terminated hyperbranched poly(amic acid)s were end‐capped by ortho‐alkyl aniline in situ and then chemically imidized, yielding autophotosensitive hyperbranched polyimides. The polyimides were soluble in strong polar solvents, such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone, N‐dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed their excellent thermal stability, with a 5 wt % thermal loss temperature in the range of 527–548 °C and a10 wt % thermal loss temperature in the range of 562–583 °C. The strong absorption of the polyimide films in ultraviolet–visible spectra at 365 nm indicated that the hyperbranched polyimides were patternable. Highly resolved images with a line width of 6 μm were developed by ultraviolet exposure of the polymer films. A well‐defined image with lines as thin as 3 μm was also patterned, but the lines were rounded at the edges. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new mesogenic monomer was prepared from biphenyl‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride and 4‐aminophenol followed by the acylation of OH groups with propionic anhydride. This diphenol propionate was polycondensed by transesterification with decane‐1,10‐dicarboxylic acid, dodecane‐1,12‐dicarboxylic acid, and eicosane‐1,20‐dicarboxylic acid or with equimolar mixtures of two dicarboxylic acids. The resulting poly(ester imide)s were characterized by elemental analyses, 1H NMR spectra, inherent viscosities, DSC measurements, optical microscopy, and X‐ray measurements with synchrotron radiation at variable temperatures. A series of poly(amide–imide)s IIIa–m containing flexible isopropylidene and ether groups in the backbone were synthesized by the direct polycondensation of 4,4′‐[1,4‐phenylenebis(isopropylidene‐1,4‐phenyleneoxy)]dianiline (PIDA) with various bis(trimellitimide)s IIa–m in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine as condensing agents. The resulting poly(amide–imide)s had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.80–1.36 dL/g. Except for those from the bis(trimellitimide)s of p‐phenylenediamine and benzidine, all the polymers could be cast from DMAc into transparent and tough films. They exhibited excellent solubility in polar solvents. The 10% weight loss temperatures of the polymers in air and in nitrogen were all above 495°C, and their Tg values were in the range of 201–252°C.
