An amphiphilic diblock copolymer composed of a photoresponsive dialkoxycyanostilbene polymethacrylate and poly(ethylene oxide) (PDACS‐b‐PEO) was synthesized and its photophysical and aggregation properties were investigated. The amphiphilic nature of the polymer caused it to self‐assemble in water, and dynamic light scattering studies indicated formation of spherical aggregates with an average size of 160 nm. Atomic force microscopy images of dried films cast from solutions containing the polymer aggregates revealed supramolecular aggregates with a spherical morphology. Photoisomerization of the stilbene chromophore in PDACS‐b‐PEO on UV irradiation resulted in the destruction of the self‐assembled superstructures which could be attributed both to change in shape of the chromophore from the linear trans isomer to the bent cis isomer which would hinder self‐aggregation of the molecules and the higher dipole moment of the cis isomer leading to a reduction of the hydrophobic nature of the stilbene containing block of PDACS‐b‐PEO. It was observed that hydrophobic dyes such as curcumin could be encapsulated within the hydrophobic interior of the spherical micellar aggregates from which the encapsulated dye could be released on UV irradiation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ABA triblock copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and dodecyl methacrylate (DMA) [poly(MMA‐b‐DMA‐b‐MMA)] (PMDM) were synthesized by Ru‐based sequential living radical polymerization. For this, DMA was first polymerized from a difunctional initiator, ethane‐1,2‐diyl bis(2‐chloro‐2‐phenylacetate) with combination of RuCl2(PPh3)3 catalyst and nBu3N additive in toluene at 80 °C. As the conversion of DMA reached over about 90%, MMA was directly added into the reaction solution to give PMDM with controlled molecular weight (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.2). These triblock copolymers showed well‐organized morphologies such as body centered cubic, hexagonal cylinder, and lamella structures both in bulk and in thin film by self‐assembly phenomenon with different poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) weight fractions. Obtained PMDMs with 20–40 wt % of the PMMA segments showed excellent electroactive actuation behaviors at relatively low voltages, which was much superior compared to conventional styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene triblock copolymer systems due to its higher polarity derived from the methacrylate backbone and lower modulus. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic triblock copolymers, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐PHEMA), were synthesized via successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). ATRP of tBA was first initiated by PEG‐Br macroinitiator using CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N′″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system to give PEG‐b‐PtBA diblock copolymer. This copolymer was then used as macroinitiator to initiate ATRP of HEMA, which afforded the target triblock copolymer, PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐PHEMA. The critical micelle concentrations of obtained amphiphilic triblock copolymers were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe. The morphology and size of formed aggregates were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, respectively. Finally, an acid‐sensitive PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐P(HEMA‐CAD) prodrug via cis‐aconityl linkage between doxorubicin and hydroxyls of triblock copolymers with a high drug loading content up to 38%, was prepared to preliminarily explore the application of triblock copolymer in drug delivery. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composite ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by coating a thin film of self‐assembling polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) block copolymers and poly(acrylic acid) homopolymers on top of a support membrane. Block copolymers self‐assembled into a nanostructure where the minority component forms cylinders, whereas homopolymers reside in the core of the cylinders. Selective removal of the homopolymers led to the formation of pores. The morphology of the polymer layer was controlled by varying the content of homopolymers or polymer concentration of the coating solution, which led to membranes with different molecular weight cutoffs (MWCOs) and permeabilities. Uniform pores were obtained using low homopolymer contents, whereas high homopolymer contents caused macrophase separation and resulted in large polydisperse pores or craters at the surface. The thickness of the block copolymer film also influenced the structure and performance of the membranes, where a thicker film results in a strong decrease in permeability but a lower MWCO. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The nonaqueous dispersion polymerization of styrene in methanol with poly[(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐vinyltriethylbenzyl ammonium bromide)]‐b‐polyisobutene as a stabilizer was investigated. There was no observable inducing period or autoacceleration in the polymerization process. The conversion increased almost linearly with the polymerization time as high as 80%. The average sizes of the obtained polystyrene particles increased, and the size distributions of the polystyrene particles tended to become narrower, with increasing conversion. The mechanism of the dispersion polymerization in the presence of polyisobutene‐b‐poly[(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐vinyltriethylbenzyl ammonium bromide)] was nucleation/growth. When the stabilizer/monomer ratio (w/w) was greater than 2.0%, the polystyrene dispersion was stable, and there was no observable polymer particle coagulation taking place during the whole polymerization process. The average diameter of the polymer particles can be mediated through changes in the polymerization conversion, monomer, and stabilizer. Nearly monodispersed polystyrene particles with average diameters of approximately 0.45–2.21 μm were obtained under optimal conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrated the synthesis of miktoarm star block copolymers of AB, AB2, and A2B, in which block A consisted of linear poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) and block B consisted of cyclic polystyrene. These structures were produced using the atom transfer radical polymerization to make telechelic polymers that, after modification, were further coupled together by copper‐catalyzed “click” reactions with high coupling efficiency. Deprotection of PtBA to poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) afforded amphiphilic miktoarm structures that when micellized in water gave vesicle morphologies when the block length of PAA was 21 units. Increasing the PAA block length to 46 units produced spherical core‐shell micelles. AB2 miktoarm stars packed more densely into the core compared to its linear counterpart (i.e., a four times greater aggregation number with approximately the same hydrodynamic diameter), resulting in the PAA arms being more compressed in the corona and extending into the water phase beyond its normal Gaussian chain conformation. These results show that the cyclic structure attached to an amphiphilic block has a significant influence on increasing the aggregation number through a greater packing density. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new facile method for preparation of an amphiphilic block copolymer via a one‐pot sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on solid support was developed. As a model homopolymerization for the solid‐supported block copolymerization, ATRPs of MMA and HEMA in toluene and in 2‐butanone/1‐propanol solvent system were carried out, respectively. Crosslinked polystyrene beads bearing 2‐bromoisobutyrate moieties successfully initiated the polymerizations of MMA and HEMA in controlled manner. On the basis of the successful results, the one‐pot synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymer by changing the reaction medium was performed. After the ATRP of MMA in toluene at 90 °C for 1 h, the poly(MMA) formed on the beads were washed by continuous flow of 2‐butanone/1‐propanol under nitrogen with the aid of a glass filter in a U‐shaped glass vessel. Then, 2‐butanone/1‐propanol, copper chloride (I), 2,2′‐bipyridyl, and HEMA were added and heated at 50 °C for 48 h with shaking the vessel, followed by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid to isolate the well‐defined amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(MMA‐b‐HEMA). These demonstrated the feasibility of the present strategy for well‐defined synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers via a one‐pot procedure. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gold‐supported amphiphilic triblock copolymer brushes composed of two hydrophilic poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) blocks and a hydrophobic poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) middle part were synthesized using a surface‐initiated ATRP. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM‐IRRAS), ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, and atomic force microscopy were used for the characterization of PHEMA‐co‐PBMA‐co‐PHEMA brushes. The PM‐IRRAS analysis revealed an increase of the chain tilt toward the gold surface during growth of the individual blocks. We suggest that the orientation of the amphiphilic polymer brushes is influenced by both the chain length and the interchain interactions. Additionally, a detachment of the polymer membranes from the solid support and subsequent gel permeation chromatography analyses allowed us to establish their compositions. We applied block‐selective solvents (water and hexane) as well as a good solvent for the whole polymer chain (ethanol) to study the morphology and solvent responsive behavior of the amphiphilic brushes. The presented results could serve as a good starting point for the fabrication of functional solid‐supported membranes for biosensing applications. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel double brush‐shaped copolymer with amphiphilic polyacrylate‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly acrylate copolymer (PA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PA) as a backbone and thermosensitive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) long side chains at both ends of the PEG was synthesized via an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) route, and the structure was confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, and SEC. The thermosensitive self‐assembly behavior was examined via UV‐vis, TEM, DLS, and surface tension measurements, etc. The self‐assembled micelles, with low critical solution temperatures (LCST) of 34–38 °C, form irregular fusiform and/or spherical morphologies with single, double, and petaling cores in aqueous solution at room temperature, while above the LCST the micelles took on more regular and smooth spherical shapes with diameter ranges from 45 to 100 nm. The micelle exhibits high stabilities even in simulated physiological media, with low critical micellization concentration (CMC) up to 5.50, 4.89, and 5.05 mg L?1 in aqueous solution, pH 1.4 and 7.4 PBS solutions, respectively. The TEM and DLS determination reveled that the copolymer micelle had broad size distribution below its LCST while it produces narrow and homogeneous size above the LCST. The cytotoxicity was investigated by MTT assays to elucidate the application potential of the as‐prepared block polymer brushes as drug controlled release vehicles. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABA‐based triblock copolymers of styrene as block ends and gelable 3‐acryloxypropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as the middle block were successfully prepared through nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP). The copolymers were bulk self‐assembled into films and the degree of phase separation between the two blocks was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Their morphology was examined through small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), whereas the mechanical properties of the corresponding cross‐linked self‐assembled nanostructures were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Acidic treatment of the triblock copolymers favored the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of the APTES‐rich nanophase, and induced a mechanical reinforcement evidenced by the increase of storage modulus values and the shift of the glass transition temperature to higher temperatures due to confinement effects. In addition, the lamellar structure of the hybrid films was retained after the removal of the organic part by calcination. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the synthesis of diblock and triblock copolymers by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene and acetoxymethylstyrene. Contrary to the usual block copolymerization involving isolation of the macroinitiator, a convenient one‐pot procedure is developed. This is possible because of the preferential polymerization of acetoxymethylstyrene, even in the presence of residual styrene, as inferred from characterization of the intermediate polystyrenes and the block copolymers by size exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and GPEC techniques. The latent acetoxy functionalities in these block copolymers are shown to be easily unmasked to ? OH and ? Br functionalities, with the potential for block ionomers and dense graft architectures. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 575–583, 2005  相似文献

In order to study the self‐assembly of block copolymer grafted from graphene oxide (GO) by the fluorescence of GO, poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL)‐block‐poly(dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) is grafted from its surface using consecutive ring opening (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). GO‐g‐(PCL13‐b‐PDMAEMA117) (GPCLD) at pH 9.2 exhibits cloud point (Tc) at 32 °C. At pH 9.2 HRTEM images indicate schizophrenic morphology from vesicle at 26 °C to annular ring at 30 °C followed by giant size aggregation at 38 °C. But the reference block copolymer (PCL14‐b‐PDMAEMA126, PCLD), synthesized using benzyl alcohol as ROP initiator, exhibits only core–shell morphology whose size increases with rising temperature at pH 9.2. GPCLD solution exhibits good photoluminescence (PL) property arising from GO at pH 9.2 and PL‐intensity increases abruptly during phase transition. Both Tc and size of GPCLD assembly can be reversibly tuned by CO2 and N2 gas purging. 1H NMR spectra exhibit a gradual shift of resonance peaks of the protons on CO2 bubbling. Thus at pH 9.2 and at 38 °C the GPCLD acts as a good CO2 sensor. Additionally, the GPCLD vesicle can load hydrophobic guest molecules which can be released by triggering with CO2. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A novel monomer, ethyl 4‐[4‐(11‐methacryloyloxyundecyloxy)phenyl azobenzoyl‐oxyl] benzoate, containing a photoisomerizable N?N group was synthesized. The monomer was further diblock copolymerized with methyl methacrylate. Amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate‐block‐ethyl 4‐[4‐(11‐methacryloyloxyundecyloxy)phenyl azobenzoyl‐oxyl] benzoate ( PMMA ‐ b ‐ PAzoMA ) was synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization. The reverse micelles with spherical construction were obtained with 2 wt % of the diblock copolymer in a THF/H2O mixture of 1:2. Under alternating UV and visible light illumination, reversible changes in micellar structure between sphere and rod‐like particles took place as a result of the reversible E‐Z photoisomerization of azobenzene segments in PMMA ‐ b ‐ PAzoMA . Microphase separation of the amphiphilic diblock copolymer in thin films was achieved through thermal and solvent aligning methods. The microphases of the annealed thin films were investigated using atom force microscopy topology and scanning electron microscopy analyses. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic self‐folding random copolymers exhibit different solution behaviors depending on the identity of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic units. Herein, it is demonstrated that changing the hydrophilic unit from poly(ethylene glycol) to the sugar trehalose causes increased discrepancy in the polarity difference with a fluorinated hydrophobic segment and changes the aggregation state of the polymer in water. The PEG‐fluorinated and trehalose/PEG‐fluorinated amphiphilic random copolymers were the most efficient at encapsulating a fluorinated agrochemical. The small‐molecule agrochemical exerts a strong influence on the self‐assembly of the polymers, demonstrating that fluorous interactions result in not only intramolecular self‐folding behavior but also intermolecular polymer association to form well‐defined nanoparticles. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine)‐block‐polystyrene (PMMA‐b‐P4VP‐b‐PS) triblock terpolymer is synthesized by ATRP to study its self‐assembly with PAA in organic solvents. The self‐assembly behavior of this system is compared with the one of a mixture of two diblocks, namely polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) and poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(methacrylic acid) (PMMA‐b‐PMAA). For both systems, formation of hydrogen‐bonded complexes between the P4VP and PMAA or PAA blocks occurs. These complexes become insoluble in the solvent used and micelles with a P4VP/P(M)AA complexes core surrounded by PS and PMMA coronal chains are obtained in both cases. These micelles are analyzed by DLS and TEM. Spherical micelles are formed for both systems but the hydrodynamic radii obtained for the two types of micelles are different. Indeed, the micelles formed by the PMMA‐b‐P4VP‐b‐PS + PAA system are smaller than those observed for the PS‐b‐P4VP + PMMA‐b‐PMAA system. Finally, the effect of the molar ratio of the P4VP/PMAA complexing blocks is investigated. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 459–467  相似文献

Well‐defined amphiphilic polymethylene‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) (PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA) triblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation, ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OH; Mn = 1100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09) were produced by polyhomologation followed by oxidation. Then, the PM‐b‐PCL (Mn = 10,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.27) diblock copolymers were synthesized via ROP of ε‐caprolactone using PM‐OH as macroinitiator and stannous octanoate (Sn(Oct)2) as a catalyst. Subsequently, the macroinitiator transformed from PM‐b‐PCL in high conversion initiated ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) to construct PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PtBA triblock copolymers (Mn = 11,000–14,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.24–1.26). Finally, the PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA triblock copolymers were obtained via the hydrolysis of the PtBA segment in PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PtBA triblock copolymers. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Porous films of such triblock copolymers were fabricated by static breath‐figure method and observed by scanning electron microscope. The aggregates of PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA triblock copolymer were studied by transmission electron microscope. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

The well‐defined polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) [PS‐block‐P4VP (SV1); lamellar morphology] and polyisoprene‐block‐poly(α‐methyl styrene) [PI‐block‐PMS (IMS1); PI spherical morphology] diblock copolymers were prepared by sequential anionic polymerization techniques. The segregated chains in the P4VP lamellar layers of the SV1 film (PS lamellae: 41 nm; P4VP lamellae: 51 nm) were crosslinked with 1,4‐dibromobutane. This crosslinked film was insoluble in organic solvents such as benzene and chloroform (CHCl3) and exhibited various structural colors under the swollen state. The IMS1 film (body‐centered cubic lattice, diameter of PI spheres: 53 nm) was soaked in the mixture of CHCl3/hexane (1 : 10, v/v). This solvent system resulted in the swelling of PI spherical domains. The transmitted and reflected light color through the swollen film changed to a deep blue. Such color changes were reversible upon swelling in solvent and evaporation of the solvent. Subsequently, photofunctional diethyldithiocarbamate (DC) groups were introduced into the PS block of the parent block copolymer IMS1 by means of polymer reactions. The locking of the cubic lattice was performed with living radical graft copolymerization from DC groups of swollen as‐cast film in methyl methacrylate (MMA) under UV irradiation. The locking of structural colors such as blue and green was also achieved, varying the content of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) grafted chains. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB) aryl ether‐based amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and fluorophilic poly(p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate) segments were synthesized via successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 2‐MBP‐initiated and CuBr/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine‐catalyzed ATRP homopolymerization of the PFCB‐containing methacrylate monomer, p‐(2‐(p‐tolyloxy)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate, can be performed in a controlled mode as confirmed by the fact that the number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increased linearly with the conversions of the monomer while the polydispersity indices kept below 1.38. The block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.36) were synthesized by ATRP using Br‐end‐functionalized poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) as macroinitiator followed by the acidolysis of hydrophobic PtBA block into hydrophilic PAA segment. The critical micelle concentrations of the amphiphilic diblock copolymers in different surroundings were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe. The morphology and size of the micelles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic laser light scattering, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
