X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy was used to probe the diffusive dynamics of colloidal particles in a shear flow. Combining X‐ray techniques with microfluidics is an experimental strategy that reduces the risk of X‐ray‐induced beam damage and also allows time‐resolved studies of processes taking place in flow cells. The experimental results and theoretical predictions presented here show that in the low shear limit for a `transverse flow' scattering geometry (scattering wavevector q perpendicular to the direction of flow) the measured relaxation times are independent of the flow rate and determined only by the diffusive motion of the particles. This is not generally valid and, in particular, for a `longitudinal flow' ( q ∥ flow) scattering geometry the relaxation times are strongly affected by the flow‐induced motion of the particles. The results here show that the Brownian diffusion of colloidal particles can be measured in a flowing sample and that, up to flux limitations, the experimental conditions under which this is possible are easier to achieve at higher values of q. 相似文献

Combined X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) and diffracted X‐ray tracking (DXT) measurements of carbon‐black nanocrystals embedded in styrene–butadiene rubber were performed. From the intensity fluctuation of speckle patterns in a small‐angle scattering region (XPCS), dynamical information relating to the translational motion can be obtained, and the rotational motion is observed through the changes in the positions of DXT diffraction spots. Graphitized carbon‐black nanocrystals in unvulcanized styrene–butadiene rubber showed an apparent discrepancy between their translational and rotational motions; this result seems to support a stress‐relaxation model for the origin of super‐diffusive particle motion that is widely observed in nanocolloidal systems. Combined measurements using these two techniques will give new insights into nanoscopic dynamics, and will be useful as a microrheology technique. 相似文献

Moderate‐demagnification higher‐order silicon kinoform focusing lenses have been fabricated to facilitate small‐angle X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) experiments. The geometric properties of such lenses, their focusing performance and their applicability for XPCS measurements are described. It is concluded that one‐dimensional vertical X‐ray focusing via silicon kinoform lenses significantly increases the usable coherent flux from third‐generation storage‐ring light sources for small‐angle XPCS experiments. 相似文献

The technique of speckle visibility spectroscopy has been employed for the measurement of dynamics using coherent X‐ray scattering. It is shown that the X‐ray contrast within a single exposure can be related to the relaxation time of the intermediate scattering function, and this methodology is applied to the diffusion of 72 nm‐radius latex spheres in glycerol. Data were collected with exposure times as short as 2 ms by employing a resonant shutter. The weak scattering present for short exposures necessitated an analysis formalism based on the spatial correlation function of individual photon charge droplets on an area detector, rather than the usual methods employed for intensity correlations. It is demonstrated that this method gives good agreement between theory and experiment and thus holds promise for extending area‐detector‐based coherent scattering methods to the study of faster dynamics than previously obtainable. 相似文献

X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) provides an opportunity to study the dynamics of systems by measuring the temporal fluctuations in a far‐field diffraction pattern. A two‐dimensional detector system has been developed to investigate fluctuations in the frequency range of several Hz to kHz. The X‐ray detector system consists of a thin 100 µm scintillation crystal coupled to a Geiger‐mode avalanche photodiode array. In this article the elements of the system are detailed and the detector for XPCS measurements is demonstrated. 相似文献

The MISTRAL beamline is one of the seven phase‐I beamlines at the ALBA synchrotron light source (Barcelona, Spain) that will be opened to users at the end of 2010. MISTRAL will be devoted to cryotomography in the water window and multi‐keV spectral regions for biological applications. The optics design consists of a plane‐grating monochromator that has been implemented using variable‐line‐spacing gratings to fulfil the requirements of X‐ray microscopy using a reflective condenser. For instance, a fixed‐focus condition independent of the included angle, constant magnification as well as coma and spherical aberration corrections are achieved with this system. The reported design is of wider use. 相似文献

A confocal full‐field X‐ray microscope has been developed for use as a novel three‐dimensional X‐ray imaging method. The system consists of an X‐ray illuminating `sheet‐beam' whose beam shape is micrified only in one dimension, and an X‐ray full‐field microscope whose optical axis is normal to the illuminating sheet beam. An arbitral cross‐sectional region of the object is irradiated by the sheet‐beam, and secondary X‐ray emission such as fluorescent X‐rays from this region is imaged simultaneously using the full‐field microscope. This system enables a virtual sliced image of a specimen to be obtained as a two‐dimensional magnified image, and three‐dimensional observation is available only by a linear translation of the object along the optical axis of the full‐field microscope. A feasibility test has been carried out at beamline 37XU of SPring‐8. Observation of the three‐dimensional distribution of metallic inclusions in an artificial diamond was performed. 相似文献

The first X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy experiments using the fast single‐photon‐counting detector PILATUS (Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland) have been performed. The short readout time of this detector permits access to intensity autocorrelation functions describing dynamics in the millisecond range that are difficult to access with charge‐coupled device detectors with typical readout times of several seconds. Showing no readout noise the PILATUS detector enables measurements of samples that either display fast dynamics or possess only low scattering power with an unprecedented signal‐to‐noise ratio. 相似文献

Using the scanning transmission X‐ray microscope at BESSY II, colloidal structures from a Chernozem soil have been studied with a spatial resolution around 60 nm and a spectral resolution of 1700 at the K‐absorption edge of carbon. Elemental mapping has been used to determine the distribution of organic matter within the colloidal structures. Spectra have been extracted from image stacks to obtain information about the chemical state. For the analysis of the latter, principal component analysis and cluster analysis have been applied. It was possible, for example, to discriminate clay particles against organic components. 相似文献

A closed‐circle miniature flow cell for high X‐ray photon flux experiments on radiation‐sensitive liquid samples is presented. The compact cell is made from highly inert material and the flow is induced by a rotating magnetic stir bar, which acts as a centrifugal pump inside the cell. The cell is ideal for radiation‐sensitive yet precious or hazardous liquid samples, such as concentrated acids or bases. As a demonstration of the cell's capabilities, X‐ray Raman scattering spectroscopy data on the oxygen K‐edge of liquid water under ambient conditions are presented. 相似文献

Lα and Lβ X‐ray fluorescence spectra of a lead metallic sheet were measured using an energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometer by changing the X‐ray tube voltage and the material of the primary filter. The Lα to Lβ intensity ratio changed from Lα: Lβ = 3: 1 at 15 kV to Lα: Lβ = 1: 1 at 50 kV depending on the X‐ray tube voltage and the filter. The scattered X‐ray spectra of an acrylic slab instead of the sample in the sample holder were measured by changing the applied voltage and the material of the primary filter. The calculated values of the Pb Lα/Lβ intensity ratio of the metallic sheet using the Shiraiwa–Fujino formula by inserting the scattered X‐ray spectra of an acrylic plate as incident X‐ray spectra and the fundamental parameters taken from the Elam database were in good agreement with the experimental ones. We conclude that we can obtain an incident X‐ray spectrum approximately by measuring the scattered X‐ray spectrum without measuring the direct incident beam. Combined X‐ray diffraction and alpha particle X‐ray spectrometer analysis of geologic materials 下载免费PDF全文
The shallow interrogation depth of the lightest elements (Na, Mg, Al, and Si) detected by the particle‐induced X‐ray emission branch of the Curiosity Rover's alpha particle X‐ray spectrometer suggests that the X‐rays of these elements very likely emerge from a single mineral grain. This reality violates the assumption of atomic homogeneity at the micron scale made in both existing spectrum‐reduction approaches for the alpha particle X‐ray spectrometer. Consequently, analytical results for these elements in igneous geochemical reference materials exhibit deviations from certified concentrations in a manner that can be related to the total alkali‐silica diagram. A computer code is introduced here to provide quantitative prediction of these deviations using the mineral abundances determined from X‐ray diffraction. The latter are converted to area coverage fractions to represent the sample surface, and a fundamental parameters computation predicts the elemental X‐ray yields from each mineral and sums these. In this process, the chemistry of each individual mineral has to be varied by an iterative simplex approach; X‐ray yields are computed and compared with the peak areas from the fit of the bulk sample. When the difference between mineral yields and peak areas for each element are minimized, the mineral formulae are set and elemental X‐ray yields provided. The ratio between the summed mineral X‐ray yields and the corresponding yields based on the homogeneity assumption may then be compared directly with the concentration deviations measured in our earlier work. For several rock types, good agreement is found, thereby consolidating our understanding of the effects of sample mineralogy on alpha particle X‐ray spectrometer results. The molecular structure of lubricating motor oils is investigated by X‐ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy measurements. Both fresh and used oils are studied. Although the Zn K‐edge spectra gave information about the degradation of the antiwear/antioxidant zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) additives within the oil, Fe K‐edge spectra are representatives for iron species dispersed in the oil during operation at elevated temperatures and pressures in the engine. The detailed analysis of the measured data shows that substantial differences are detectable in the spectra of the fresh and used oil. Our results show that the Zn–S bonds of the ZDDP are decomposed during the operation, resulting in Zn–O bonds instead. Furthermore, sixfold Fe–O bonds similar to those in Fe2O3 are found within the used oil, suggesting the presence of debris from the antiwear film of lubricated motor parts in the used oil. The first application of a pnCCD detector for X‐ray scattering experiments using white synchrotron radiation at BESSY II is presented. A Cd arachidate multilayer was investigated in reflection geometry within the energy range 7 keV < E < 35 keV. At fixed angle of incidence the two‐dimensional diffraction pattern containing several multilayer Bragg peaks and respective diffuse‐resonant Bragg sheets were observed. Since every pixel of the detector is able to determine the energy of every incoming photon with a resolution ΔE/E? 10?2, a three‐dimensional dataset is finally obtained. In order to achieve this energy resolution the detector was operated in the so‐called single‐photon‐counting mode. A full dataset was evaluated taking into account all photons recorded within 105 detector frames at a readout rate of 200 Hz. By representing the data in reciprocal‐space coordinates, it becomes obvious that this experiment with the pnCCD detector provides the same information as that obtained by combining a large number of monochromatic scattering experiments using conventional area detectors. 相似文献

The properties of X‐ray vacuum‐gap waveguides (WGs) with additional periodic structure on one of the reflecting walls are studied. Theoretical considerations, numerical simulations and experimental results confirm that the periodic structure imposes additional conditions on efficient propagation of the electromagnetic field along the WGs. The transmission is maximum for guided modes that possess sufficient phase synchronism with the periodic structure (here called `super‐resonances'). The field inside the WGs is essentially given at low incidence angle by the fundamental mode strongly coupled with the corresponding phased‐matched mode. Both the simulated and the experimental diffraction patterns show in the far field that propagation takes place essentially only for low incidence angles, confirming the mode filtering properties of the structured X‐ray waveguides. 相似文献

Small‐angle X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements spanning delay times from 826 ns to 52.8 s were performed using a photon‐counting pixel array detector with a dynamic range of 0–3 (2 bits). Fine resolution and a wide dynamic range of time scales was achieved by combining two modes of operation of the detector: (i) continuous mode, where data acquisition and data readout are performed in parallel with a frame acquisition time of 19.36 µs, and (ii) burst mode, where 12 frames are acquired with frame integration times of either 2.56 µs frame?1 or 826 ns frame?1 followed by 3.49 ms or 1.16 ms, respectively, for readout. The applicability of the detector for performing multi‐speckle XPCS was demonstrated by measuring the Brownian dynamics of 10 nm‐radius gold and 57 nm‐radius silica colloids in water at room temperature. In addition, the capability of the detector to faithfully record one‐ and two‐photon counts was examined by comparing the statistical distribution of photon counts with expected probabilities from the negative binomial distribution. It was found that in burst mode the ratio of 2 s to 1 s is markedly smaller than predicted and that this is attributable to pixel‐response dead‐time. 相似文献

Time‐resolved X‐ray PIV technique for diagnosing opaque biofluid flow with insufficient X‐ray fluxes
Sung Yong Jung Han Wook Park Bo Heum Kim Sang Joon Lee 《Journal of synchrotron radiation》2013,20(3):498-503
X‐ray imaging is used to visualize the biofluid flow phenomena in a nondestructive manner. A technique currently used for quantitative visualization is X‐ray particle image velocimetry (PIV). Although this technique provides a high spatial resolution (less than 10 µm), significant hemodynamic parameters are difficult to obtain under actual physiological conditions because of the limited temporal resolution of the technique, which in turn is due to the relatively long exposure time (~10 ms) involved in X‐ray imaging. This study combines an image intensifier with a high‐speed camera to reduce exposure time, thereby improving temporal resolution. The image intensifier amplifies light flux by emitting secondary electrons in the micro‐channel plate. The increased incident light flux greatly reduces the exposure time (below 200 µs). The proposed X‐ray PIV system was applied to high‐speed blood flows in a tube, and the velocity field information was successfully obtained. The time‐resolved X‐ray PIV system can be employed to investigate blood flows at beamlines with insufficient X‐ray fluxes under specific physiological conditions. This method facilitates understanding of the basic hemodynamic characteristics and pathological mechanism of cardiovascular diseases. 相似文献

Several types of handy x‐ray fluorescence spectrometers are presented. The results obtained with a Niton spectrometer are presented as a goal to develop a laboratory‐made spectrometer using an Amptek Cool‐X pyroelectric x‐ray generator. A small and cheap charge‐up x‐ray emitting device and its spectrum are also presented. Handy x‐ray spectrometers are now progressing rapidly and the detection limits are in the range of a few ppm for certain elements. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Transmission X‐ray mirrors have been fabricated from 300–400 nm‐thick low‐stress silicon nitride windows of size 0.6 mm × 85 mm. The windows act as a high‐pass energy filter at grazing incidence in an X‐ray beam for the beam transmitted through the window. The energy cut‐off can be selected by adjusting the incidence angle of the transmission mirror, because the energy cut‐off is a function of the angle of the window with respect to the beam. With the transmission mirror at the target angle of 0.22°, a 0.3 mm × 0.3 mm X‐ray beam was allowed to pass through the mirror with a cut‐off energy of 10 keV at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source. The energy cut‐off can be adjusted from 8 to 12 keV at an angle of 0.26° to 0.18°, respectively. The observed mirror transmittance was above 80% for a 300 nm‐thick film. 相似文献
