High energy ball milling (HEBM) was utilized, as an innovative process, to incorporate carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a polyethylene (PE) matrix avoiding: high temperatures, solvents, ultrasonication, chemical modification of carbon nanotubes. Composites with 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 wt % of carbon nanotubes were prepared. Films were obtained melting the powders in a hot press. Morphology and physical properties (thermal, mechanical, electrical properties) were evaluated. The used processing conditions allowed to obtain a satisfactory level of dispersion of CNTs into the PE matrix with a consequent improvement of the physical properties of the samples. The thermal degradation was significantly delayed already with 1–2% wt of CNTs. The mechanical properties resulted greatly improved for low filler content (up to 3% wt). The electrical measurements showed a percolation threshold in the range 1–3 wt % of CNTs. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 597–606, 2007  相似文献

We report on the effect of processing conditions on rheology, thermal and electrical properties of nanocomposites containing 0.02–0.3 wt % multiwall carbon nanotubes in an epoxy resin. The influence of the sonication, the surface functionalization during mixing, as well as the application of external magnetic field (EMF) throughout the curing process was examined. Rheological tests combined with optical microscopy visualization are proved as a very useful methodology to determine the optimal processing conditions for the preparation of the nanocomposites. The Raman spectra provide evidence for more pronounced effect on the functionalized with hardener compositions, particularly by curing upon application of EMF. Different chain morphology of CNTs is created depending of the preparation conditions, which induced different effects on the thermal and electrical properties of the nanocomposites. The thermal degradation peak is significantly shifted towards higher temperatures by increasing the nanotube content, this confirming that even the small amount of carbon nanotubes produces a strong barrier effect for the volatile products during the degradation. The ac conductivity measurements revealed lower values of the percolation threshold (pc) in the range of 0.03–0.05 wt %. CNTs for the nanocomposites produced by preliminary dispersing of nanotubes in the epoxy resin, compared to those prepared by preliminary functionalization of the nanotubes in the amine hardener. This is attributed to the higher viscosity and stronger interfacial interactions of the amine hardener/CNT dispersion which restricts the reorganization of the nanotubes. The application of the EMF does not influence the pc value but the dc conductivity values (σdc) of the nanocomposites increased at about one order of magnitude due to the development of the aforementioned chain structure. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposites based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and expanded graphite (EG) have been prepared by in situ polymerization. Morphology of the nanocomposites has been examined by electronic microscopy. The relationship between the preparation method, morphology, and electrical conductivity was studied. Electronic microscopy images reveal that the nanocomposites exhibit well dispersed graphene platelets. The incorporation of EG to the PET results in a sharp insulator‐to‐conductor transition with a percolation threshold (?c) as low as 0.05 wt %. An electrical conductivity of 10?3 S/cm was achieved for 0.4 wt % of EG. The low percolation threshold and relatively high electrical conductivity are attributed to the high aspect ratio, large surface area, and uniform dispersion of the EG sheets in PET matrix. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposites of polyethylene (HDPE) and poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) thermoplastic elastomers, both containing boehmites with variable sizes, shapes, and aspect ratios (1–20), were prepared by means of in situ olefin polymerization and melt compounding. The in situ olefin polymerization in the presence of boehmite nanorods afforded nanocomposites containing 4–8 wt % of boehmite. In an alternative process, the in situ olefin polymerization was used to produce polyolefins with high boehmite content of 50 wt % as masterbatches for polyolefin melt compounding with ethylene homo‐ and copolymers. The addition of the boehmite nanofillers improved the stiffness without sacrificing high elongation at break. The stiffness, as expressed by Young's modulus, increased with increasing boehmite aspect ratio. In case of thermoplastic elastomer nanocomposites the increase of stiffness was accompanied by a simultaneous increase of elongation at break. According to transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fine dispersion of the polar boehmite nanorods and nanoplatelets within the nonpolar hydrocarbon polymer matrix was obtained without requiring the addition of special dispersing agents or functionalized polyolefin compatibilizers. The comparison of melt compounding of polyethylene with boehmites or polyethylene/boehmite masterbatches revealed that compounding of masterbatches prepared by in situ polymerization filling afforded much finer and more uniform nanoboehmite dispersions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) transform electrical energy into mechanical work. However, despite displaying exceptional features, the low permittivity of elastomers restricts their application. Hence, to overcome this limitation, DEAs are fabricated by dispersing poly(3‐methylthiophene acetate) (P3TMA), a polarizable conducting polymer, into poly[styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene] (SEBS), a thermoplastic elastomer with excellent mechanical properties. Although high‐quality SEBS:P3TMA films are obtained for all compositions (between 0.5 and 20 wt % P3TMA), their thickness and surface roughness increase with the nano‐sized filler content. Moreover, the conducting particles are well integrated into the SEBS network with no evidence of aggregation or significant change in the mechanical properties of the composites. P3TMA, which forms encapsulated conductive domains within the polymeric matrix, improves the dielectric behavior of SEBS:P3TMA by increasing their dielectric constant with low dielectric losses and no current leakage. Thus, indicating the potential future application of these nanocomposites as elastomer actuators or high energy density capacitors. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Exfoliated nylon‐11/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization by dispersing organoclay in 11‐aminoundecanoic acid monomer. The original clay was modified by a novel method with 11‐aminoundecanoic acid. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show that stronger hydrogen bonds exist between nylon‐11 and organoclay than that of between nylon‐11 and original clay. The linear dynamic viscoelasticity of organoclay nanocomposites was investigated. Before taking rheological measurements, the exfoliated and intercalating structures and the thermal properties were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that the clay was uniformly distributed in nylon‐11 matrix during in situ polymerization of clay with 4 wt % or less. The presence of clay in nylon‐11 matrix increased the crystallization temperature and the thermal stability of nanocomposites prepared. Rheological properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus, and relative viscosity have close relationship with the dispersion favorably compatible with the organically modified clay. Comparing with neat nylon‐11, the nanocomposites show much higher dynamic modulus and stronger shear thinning behavior. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation and analysis of morphology, mechanical, and electrical properties of nanocomposites based on ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer and commercial multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was achieved. The used techniques for obtaining nanocomposites were the conventional melt‐mixing and the in situ ethylene polymerization/coating reaction, as catalyzed directly from CNT surface, with different polyethylene content (i.e. 55.0% and 66.6%). Nanocomposites were also prepared using crude CNTs. The incorporation in the molten state of such polyethylene surface‐coated CNTs, used as “masterbatch,” in EVA was demonstrated a good strategy for allowing the complete destructuring of the native bundle‐like aggregates, leading to the preparation of polymer nanocomposites with largely improved properties, even at very low nanofiller content. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were first modified using N,N′‐ dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) dehydrating agents. Subsequently, the poly(butylene succinate)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (PBS/MWNTs) nanocomposites were prepared through facile melt blending. Thermal degradation of these PBS/MWNT nanocomposites was investigated; the kinetic parameters of degradation were calculated using the Coats and Redfern, Ozawa, and Horowitz and Metzger methods, respectively. It was found that the degradation reaction mechanism of PBS and the CNT‐C18 containing nanocomposites at lower temperature was likely to produce an F1 model through reaction of random chain cleavage (cis‐elimination). However, the reaction mechanism at higher temperature was likely to be a D1 model because of the dominant diffusion control effect. Moreover, it was found that the activation energies of CNT‐C18‐containing PBS nanocomposites were first increased with the content of CNT‐C18, but then decreased after the content was larger than 0.5 wt % for all models at differing heating rates. This may be due to the formation of a conductive network of CNTs in the polymer matrix at higher content of CNTs, which lead to better heat and electrical conductivity. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were prepared from curauá fibers via acid hydrolysis, and used as reinforcing phase for high‐density biopolyethylene (HDBPE) or green polyethylene. Castor oil (CO), epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) were chosen as compatibilizers for this study. Nanocomposites reinforced with CNC (3, 6, and 9 wt %) were processed by extrusion, using CO (3, 6, and 9 wt %) to evaluate its action as CNC dispersing agent in the HDBPE matrix. From the results obtained for these films, the CNC and oil contents were set at 3 wt%. In addition to CO, ELO, and ESO were also used, and besides processing by extrusion, extrusion/hot‐pressing process was also considered, in order to compare the two processing techniques. The nanocomposites were characterized by microscopic, thermal, mechanical, and rheological analyses. The presence of oil leads to less opaque films and improved dispersion. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2015 , 53, 1010–1019  相似文献

PCL was blended with pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and with a nanohybrid obtained from the same MWCNT but grafted with low molecular weight PCL, employing concentrations of 0.25 to 5 wt % of MWCNT and MWCNT‐g‐PCL. Excellent CNT dispersion was found in all samples leading to supernucleation of both nanofiller types. Nanohybrids with 1 wt % or less MWCNTs crystallize faster than nanocomposites (due to supernucleation), while the trend eventually reverses at higher nanotubes content (because of plasticization). Rheological results show that yield‐like behavior develops in both nanocomposites, even for the minimum content of carbon nanotubes. In addition, the MWCNT‐g‐PCL family, when compared with the neat polymer, exhibits lower values of viscosity and modulus in oscillatory shear, and higher compliance in creep. These rheological differences are discussed in terms of the plasticization effect caused by the existence of low molecular weight free and grafted PCL chains in the nanohybrids. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study details an industrial process to prepare polypropylene (PP) composites reinforced with different loadings (0.5–10wt.%) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from a direct dilution of a masterbatch produced by an optimized extrusion compounding process. The work demonstrates how the anisotropy in the distribution of CNTs can have a positive effect on the electrical conductivity and fracture toughness of the resulting composites. The composite with the highest loading of CNTs had an electrical conductivity of 10?2 S/m comparable with those reported in the available literature. The composites showed anisotropy in their properties that seems to be caused by the non‐homogeneous distribution of the agglomerates produced by the orientation of the flow direction during the injection process. The composites produced in this work exhibited a fracture toughness up to 55% higher than neat PP and failed by polymer ductile tearing. It was found that the CNT agglomerates distributed throughout the matrix increased the toughness of PP by promoting plastic deformation of the matrix during the fracture process and by a slight load transfer between the polymer matrix and the CNTs of the agglomerates. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrical and melt rheological properties of melt‐mixed polycarbonate (PC) and co‐continuous PC/poly(styrene–acrylonitrile) (SAN) blends with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are investigated. Using two sets of mixing parameters, different states of filler dispersion are obtained. With increasing CNT dispersion, an increase in electrical resistivity near the percolation threshold of PC–CNT composites and (PC + CNT)/SAN blends is observed. This suggests that the higher mixing energies required for better dispersion also result in a more severe reduction of the CNT aspect ratio; this effect was proven by CNT length measurements. Melt rheological studies show higher reinforcing effects for composites with worse dispersion. The Eilers equation, describing the melt viscosity as function of filler content, was used to fit the data and to obtain information about an apparent aspect ratio change, which was in accordance with measured CNT length reduction. Such fitting could be also transferred to the blends and serves for a qualitatively based discussion. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2018 , 56, 79–88  相似文献

Poly(ethylene‐alt‐propylene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEP‐PEO) diblock copolymers were synthesized and added at 4 wt % to 2,2‐bis[4‐(2‐hydroxy‐3‐methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane (BisGMA), a monomer that cures using free radical chemistry. In separate experiments, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) was combined as a secondary monomer with BisGMA and the monomers were loaded with 4 wt % PEP‐PEO. The diblock copolymers self‐assembled into well‐dispersed spherical micelles with PEP cores and PEO coronas. No appreciable change in the final extent of cure of the thermosets was caused by the addition of diblock copolymer, except in the case of BisGMA, where the addition of the block copolymer increased extent of cure by 12%. Furthermore, the extent of cure was increased by 29% and 37% with the addition of 25 and 50 wt % PEGDMA, respectively. Elastic modulus and fracture resistance were also determined, and the values indicate that the addition of block copolymers does not significantly toughen the thermoset materials. This finding is surprising when compared with the large increase in fracture resistance seen in block copolymer‐modified epoxies, and an explanation is proposed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reactive blending composites of isotactic polypropylene (PP)/octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were prepared in the presence of dicumyl peroxide. Comparison of the rheological behavior of physical and reactive blending composites was made by oscillatory rheological measurements. It was found that the viscosity of physical blending composites drops at lower POSS content (0.5–1 wt %) and thereafter increases with increasing POSS content; that of reactive blending composites increases with increasing POSS content and displays a solid‐like rheological behavior at low frequency region when POSS content is higher than 1 wt %. The deviation of reactive blending composites from the scaling log G′–log G″ of linear polymer in Han plot, upturning at high viscosity in Cole–Cole plot, and from van Gurp–Palmen plot are related to the gelation behavior reactively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monodisperse polystyrene (PS) particles were prepared by a living radical dispersion polymerization with a reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent in an ethanol medium. In the presence of RAFT agent, the effects of various reaction parameters on the characteristics of PS particles were systematically investigated. When no RAFT agent was involved, the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of the PS particles increased from 17,800 to 30,000 g/mol, but the weight‐average diameter (Dw) decreased from 2.54 to 2.06 μm with the increase of poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) content from 4.0 to 16.0 wt %. No correlation between the Mn and the coefficient of variation (CV) was observed. However, when the RAFT concentration varied from 0 to 2.0 wt %, all of the conversion, Mn, Dw, CV, and polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) decreased. This indicates that the RAFT agent alters the inverse behavior between the molecular weight (MW) and particle size shown in the conventional dispersion polymerization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites based on biocompatible thermoplastic elastomer styrene‐ethylene/butylene‐styrene (SEBS) as matrix and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as nanofillers show excellent mechanical and piezoresistive properties from low to large deformations. The MWCNT/SEBS composites have been prepared following a green solvent approach, to extend their range of applicability to biomedical applications. The obtained composites with 2, 4, and 5 wt % MWCNT content provide suitable piezoresistive response up to 80% deformation with a piezoresistive sensibility near 2.7, depending on the applied strain and MWCNT content. Composite sensors were also developed by spray and screen printing and integrated with an electronic data acquisition system with RF communication. The possibility to accurately control the composites properties and performance by varying MWCNT content, viscosity, and mechanical properties of the polymer matrix, shows the large potential of the system for the development of large deformation printable piezoresistive sensors. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present work, α‐form nucleating agent 1,3:2,4‐bis (3,4‐dimethylbenzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS, Millad 3988) is introduced into the blends of polypropylene/ethylene–octene copolymer (PP/POE) blends to study the effect of the nucleating agent on the toughness of PP/POE blends through affecting the crystallization behavior of PP matrix. Compared with the PP/POE blends, in which the toughness of the blends increases gradually with the increasing content of POE and only a weak transition in toughness is observed, addition of 0.2 wt % DMDBS induces not only the definitely brittle‐ductile transition at low POE content but also the enhancement of toughness and tensile strength of the blends simultaneously. Study on the morphologies of impact‐fractured surfaces suggests that the addition of a few amounts of DMDBS increases the degree of plastic deformation of sample during the fracture process. WAXD results suggest that POE induces the formation of the β‐form crystalline of PP; however, DMDBS prevents the formation of it. SEM results show that the addition of DMDBS does not affect the dispersion and phase morphologies of POE particles in PP matrix. DSC and POM results show that, although POE acts as a nucleating agent for PP crystallization and which enhances the crystallization temperature of PP and decreases the spherulites size of PP slightly, DMDBS induces the enhancement of the crystallization temperature of PP and the decrease of spherulites size of PP more greatly. It is concluded that the definitely brittle–ductile transition behavior during the impact process and the great improvement of toughness of the blends are attributed to the sharp decrease of PP spherulites size and their homogeneous distribution obtained by the addition of nucleating agent. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, a novel multifunctional poly(arylene ether nitriles)(PEN)/carbon nanotubes/Fe3O4 nanocomposite with high tensile strength, magnetic, and electrical properties was investigated. First, we synthesized the monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of the multiwalled carbon nanotubes and then the hybrid material was compounded with PEN through the solution‐casting method. The SEM and TEM images indicated that the monodisperse Fe3O4 nanoparticles, with the diameters of 70∼80 nm, were self‐assembled along CNTs via the covalent bond method, which was confirmed by FTIR and XRD. The results of tensile properties showed that the tensile strength and modulus reached their highest values at the CNTs/Fe3O4 loading content of 1 wt % and both were greatly enhanced after heat treatment. Electrical conductivity of the polymer was dramatically enhanced at the low loading level of CNTs/Fe3O4; the electrical percolation of was in the range of 5∼8 wt % of CNTs/Fe3O4. The magnetic study showed that the saturation magnetization (Ms) of PEN/CNTs/Fe3O4 nanocomposites increased with the increase of CNTs/Fe3O4 loading content, and the coercive force (Hc) of the nanocomposite was independent of the CNTs/Fe3O4 content. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The rheology and dynamic mechanical properties of binary block copolymer blends consisting of a symmetrical triblock copolymer with thermoplastic elastomeric behavior (LN4) and an asymmetrical thermoplastic triblock copolymer (LN3) were investigated. TEM images of the blends show a systematic variation in the morphologies from worms (~20–0 wt % LN3) to cylinders (~60–30 wt % LN3) to lamellae (100–70 wt % LN3) as a function of LN3 content. DMA analysis has revealed that the increase in LN3 content leads to a decrease in miscibility between the PS end blocks and the S/B middle block. The frequency and temperature dependence of the storage modulus (G′), loss modulus (G″), and complex viscosity (|η*|) has been studied for LN4 (weakly segregated) and LN3 (strongly segregated) from their master curves. By comparing the rheological properties of these blend compositions at low‐frequency regime, it is observed that with the increase in LN3 content the shear modulus and complex viscosity increase. Blend compositions with 70–100 wt % of LN3 show nonterminal behavior at reduced frequencies due to the presence of highly ordered microdomains when compared to blends with ~0–20 wt % of LN3 content. van Gurp–Palmen plots were constructed to observe the transition from liquid‐ to solid‐like behavior in the vicinity of order‐to‐disorder transition (ODT) temperature. ODT temperature increases as the thermoplastic LN3 content increases which are also confirmed by the Han plots. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐ethylene naphthalate) (PETN)/organoclay was synthesized with the solution intercalation method. Hexadecylamine was used as an organophilic alkylamine in organoclay. Our aim was to clarify the intercalation of PETN chains to hexadecylamine–montmorillonite (C16–MMT) and to improve both the thermal stability and tensile property. We found that the addition of only a small amount of organoclay was enough to improve the thermal stabilities and mechanical properties of PETN/C16–MMT hybrid films. Maximum enhancement in both the ultimate tensile strength and initial modulus for the hybrids was observed in blends containing 4 wt % C16–MMT. Below a 4 wt % clay loading, the clay particles could be highly dispersed in the polymer matrix without a large agglomeration of particles. However, an agglomerated structure did form in the polymer matrix at a 6 wt % clay content. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 2581–2588, 2001  相似文献
