A series of well‐defined ferrocene‐based amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(ethyl acrylate) (PNIPAM‐b‐PEA) backbone and poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains, were synthesized by the combination of single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A new ferrocene‐based monomer, 2‐(acryloyloxy)ethyl ferrocenecarboxylate (AEFC), was prepared first and it can be polymerized via ATRP in a controlled way using methyl 2‐bromopropionate as initiator and CuBr/PMDETA as catalytic system in DMF at 40 °C. PNIPAM‐b‐PEA backbone was synthesized by sequential SET‐LRP of NIPAM and HEA at 25 °C using CuCl/Me6TREN as catalytic system followed by the transformation into the macroinitiator by treating the pendant hydroxyls with α‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.20) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by the macroinitiator. The electro‐chemical behaviors of PAEFC homopolymer and PNIPAM‐b‐(PEA‐g‐PAEFC) graft copolymer were studied by cyclic voltammetry. Micellar properties of PNIPAM‐b‐(PEA‐g‐PAEFC) were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method for preparation the comb‐like copolymers with amphihilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(styrene) (PEO‐b‐PS) graft chains by “graft from” and “graft onto” strategies were reported. The ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) and ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) was carried out first using α‐methoxyl‐ω‐hydroxyl‐poly(ethylene oxide) (mPEO) and diphenylmethyl potassium (DPMK) as coinitiation system, then the EEGE units on resulting linear copolymer mPEO‐b‐Poly(EO‐co‐EEGE) were hydrolyzed and the recovered hydroxyl groups were reacted with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The obtained macroinitiator mPEO‐b‐Poly(EO‐co‐BiBGE) can initiate the polymerization of styrene by ATRP via the “Graft from” strategy, and the comb‐like copolymers mPEO‐b‐[Poly(EO‐co‐Gly)‐g‐PS] were obtained. Afterwards, the TEMPO‐PEO was prepared by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of EO initiated by 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperdinyl‐oxy (HTEMPO) and DPMK, and then coupled with mPEO‐b‐[Poly(EO‐co‐Gly)‐g‐PS] by atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling reaction in the presence of cuprous bromide (CuBr)/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) via “Graft onto” method. The comb‐like block copolymers mPEO‐b‐[Poly(EO‐co‐Gly)‐g‐(PS‐b‐PEO)] were obtained with high efficiency (≥90%). The final product and intermediates were characterized in detail. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 1930–1938, 2009  相似文献

A combination of nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization and living anionic polymerization was used to synthesize a series of well‐defined graft (co)polymers with “V‐shaped” and “Y‐shaped” branches. The polymer main chain is a copolymer of styrene and p‐chloromethylstyrene (PS‐co‐PCMS) prepared via nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization. The V‐shaped branches were prepared through coupling reaction of polystyrene macromonomer, carrying 1,1‐diphenylethylene terminus, with polystyryllithium or polyisoprenyllithium. The Y‐shaped branches were prepared throughfurther polymerization initiated by the V‐shaped anions. The obtained branches, carrying a living anion at the middle (V‐shaped) or at the end of the third segment (Y‐shaped), were coupled in situ with pendent benzyl chloride of PS‐co‐PCMS to form the target graft (co)polymers. The purified graft (co)polymers were analyzed by size exclusion chromatography equipped with a multiangle light scattering detector and a viscometer. The result shows that the viscosities and radii of gyration of the branched polymers are remarkably smaller than those of linear polystyrene. In addition, V‐shaped product adopts a more compact conformation in dilute solution than the Y‐shaped analogy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers, consisting of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(ethyl acrylate) backbone and poly(2‐vinylpyridine) side chains, were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by sequential SET‐LRP of N‐isopropylacrylamide and 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate at 25 °C using CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as the catalytic system. The obtained diblock copolymer was transformed into the macroinitiator by reacting with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride. Next, grafting‐from strategy was used for the synthesis of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐[poly(ethyl acrylate)‐g‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine)] double hydrophilic graft copolymer. ATRP of 2‐vinylpyridine was initiated by the macroinitiator at 25 °C using CuCl/hexamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalytic system. The synthesis of both the backbone and the side chains are controllable. Thermo‐ and pH‐responsive schizophrenic micellization behaviors were investigated by 1H NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Unimolecular micelles with PNIPAM‐core formed in acidic environment (pH = 2) with elevated temperature (T ≥ 32 °C), whereas the aggregates turned into spheres with PEA‐g‐P2VP‐core accompanied with the lifting of pH values (pH ≥ 5.3) at room temperature. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The novel trifunctional initiator, 1‐(4‐methyleneoxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpip‐eridinoxyl)‐3,5‐bi(bromomethyl)‐2,4,6‐trimethylbenzene (TEMPO‐2Br), was successfully synthesized and used to prepare the miktoarm star amphiphilic poly(styrene)‐(poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide))2 (PS(PNIPAAM)2) via combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) techniques. Furthermore, the star amphiphilic block copolymer, poly (styrene)‐(poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐b‐4‐vinylpyridine))2 (PS(PNIPAAM‐b‐P4VP)2), was also prepared using PS(PNIPAAM)2 as the macroinitiator and 4‐vinylpyridine as the second monomer by ATRP method. The obtained polymers were well‐defined with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.29). Meanwhile, the self‐assembly behaviors of the miktoarm amphiphilic block copolymers, PS(PNIPAAM)2 and PS(PNIPAAM‐b‐P4VP)2, were also investigated. Interestingly, the aggregate morphology changed from sphere‐shaped micelles (4.7 < pH < 3.0) to a mixture of spheres and rods (1.0 < pH < 3.0), and rod‐shaped nanorods formed when pH value was below 1.0. The LCST of PS(PNIPAAM)2 (pH = 7) was about 31 °C and the LCST of PS(PNIPAAM‐b‐P4VP)2 was about 35 °C (pH = 3). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cellulose‐based macroinitiators with predetermined number of initiation sites were synthesized by acylation of microcrystalline cellulose AVICEL PH‐101 with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide under homogeneous reaction conditions in the N,N‐dimethylacetamide/LiCl solvent system. The influence of different methods of cellulose activation on acylation efficiency and reproducibility was investigated. Best results were obtained using thermal activation under reduced pressure or the newly introduced protocol based on solvent exchange to 1,4‐dioxane. Prepared macroinitiators were used for grafting with styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) using optimized atom transfer radical polymerization reaction conditions to achieve well‐controlled polymerizations with high initiation efficiency. For MMA grafting, the initiation efficiency was shown to be dependent on certain reaction conditions, such as type of solvent, monomer concentration, or the presence of a sacrificial initiator. In addition, single‐electron transfer living radical polymerization with Cu(0) as the catalyst was used for the first time to prepare cellulose‐graft‐polystyrene and cellulose‐graft‐poly(MMA) copolymers in a homogeneous phase. In summary, homogeneous reaction conditions, stoichiometric control in the preparation of macroinitiators, and controlled grafting jointly allowed for an extensive control of copolymers architecture, that is, density of grafting, composition, and molecular parameters of grafts. Moreover, some of the prepared copolymers were characterized by static and dynamic light scattering and microscopic techniques (transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heterograft copolymers poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ ethylene oxide)‐graft‐polystyrene and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (poly (GTEMPO‐co‐EO)‐g‐PS/PtBA) were synthesized in one‐pot by atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling (ATNRC) reaction via “graft onto.” The main chain was prepared by the anionic ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) and 4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (GTEMPO) first, then the polystyrene and poly (tert‐butyl acrylate) with bromine end (PS‐Br, PtBA‐Br) were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). When three of them were mixed each other in the presence of CuBr/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) at 90 °C, the formed secondary carbon radicals at the PS and PtBA chain ends were quickly trapped by nitroxide radicals on poly(GTEMPO‐co‐EO). The heterograft copolymers were well defined by 1H NMR, size exclusion chromatography, fourier transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry in detail. It was found that the density of GTEMPO groups on main chain poly(GTEMPO‐co‐EO), the molecular weights of PS/PtBA side chains, and the structure of macroradicals can exert the great effects on the graft efficiency. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ferrocene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by SET‐LRP of PEGMEA macromonomer, and it was then treated with lithium di‐isopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl bromide at ?78 °C to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.32) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator, and the molecular weights of the backbone and side chains were both controllable. The electro‐chemical behaviors of graft copolymers were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that graft copolymers were more difficult to be oxidized, and the reversibility of electrode process became less with raising the content of PAEFC segment. The effects of the preparation method, the length of hydrophobic PAEFC segment, and the initial water content on self‐assembly behavior of PPEGMEA‐g‐PAEFC graft copolymers in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of micelles could transform from cylinders to spheres or rods with changing the preparation condition and the length of side chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymer containing hydrophobic polyallene‐based backbone and hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl acrylate) (PDEAEA) side chains was synthesized by sequential living coordination polymerization of 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol (MHDO) and single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl acrylate (DEAEA). Ni‐catalyzed living coordination polymerization of MHDO was first performed in toluene to give a well‐defined double‐bond‐containing poly(6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol) (PMHDO) homopolymer with a low polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.10). Next, 2‐chloropropionyl chloride was used for the esterification of pendant hydroxyls in every repeating unit of the homopolymer so that the homopolymer was converted to PMHDO‐Cl macroinitiator. Finally, SET‐LRP of DEAEA was initiated by the macroinitiator in tetrahydrofuran/H2O using CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system to afford well‐defined PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEA graft copolymers (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.22) through the grafting‐from strategy. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) was determined by ?uorescence spectroscopy with N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe and the micellar morphology was visualized by transmission electron microscopy. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ABC triblock copolymers, that is, polyisoprene‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PI‐PS‐PEO), PI‐block‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐block‐PEO (PI‐PtBA‐PEO), and PI‐block‐poly(acrylic acide)‐block‐PEO (PI‐PAA‐PEO) were obtained by combination of anionic technique, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and single electron transfer nitroxide coupling (SETNRC) reaction. Anionic polymerization of isoprene followed by end capping with ethylene oxide yielded hydroxyl‐terminated PI. After esterification, PI with Br end group was used as a macroinitiator to initiate the polymerization of styrene and tBA by ATRP that was then trapped by 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO) group in PEO by SETNRC reaction rapidly with high efficiency in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. The effect of reaction time and polymer chain length on SETNRC reaction was discussed in detail. In the presence of Cu0/tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine, SETNRC between PI‐PS‐Br and PEO‐TEMPO was carried out with the efficiency of up to 91.6% in 2 h. With the increase in polymer chain length, the efficiency decreased fleetly. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Interconnected microcellular polymeric monoliths having unexpected high mechanical strength have been prepared using the high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) methodology. Oil‐in water concentrated emulsions of aqueous 1‐vinyl‐5‐amino [1,2,3,4]tetrazole (1‐VAT) mixed with a low molar ratio (7%) of N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as crosslinking agent were prepared using dodecane as dispersed phase and a mixture of hydrophilic surfactants. “Reverse” polyHIPE materials were obtained after radical copolymerization, solvent extraction, and drying. Their morphology, chemical composition, and physicochemical behavior are discussed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2942–2947, 2010  相似文献

Poly(isoprene) (PI) with pendant functional groups was successfully synthesized by thiol‐ene addition reaction under 365 nm UV irradiation, and the functionalized PI was further modified and used to prepare graft copolymers with “V”‐shaped side chains. First, the pendant ? SCH2CH(OH)CH2OH groups were introduced to PI by thiol‐ene addition reaction between 1‐thioglycerol and double bonds, and the results showed that the addition reaction carried out only on double bonds of 1,2‐addition isoprene units. After the esterification of hydroxyl groups by 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide, the forming macroinitiator was used to initiate the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene (St) and tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA), and the graft copolymers PI‐g‐PS 2 and PI‐g‐PtBA 2 or PI‐g‐PAA 2 (by hydrolysis of PI‐g‐PtBA 2) were obtained, respectively. It was confirmed that the graft density of side chains on PI main chains could be easily controlled by variation of the contents of modified 1,2‐addition isoprene units on PI. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer‐encapsulated silver nanoparticles were synthesized and sterically stabilized by a new core‐shell type system consisting of poly(S‐alt‐MA)‐graft‐PMMA copolymer that acts as a scaffold for the synthesis of size confined nanoparticles. The graft copolymer is synthesized via ambient temperature ATRP using the CuBr/PMDETA catalytic system at ambient temperature. The graft copolymer is hypothesized to function as a scaffold with the anhydride part interacting strongly with the silver ions, while the PMMA graft functions as a polymer brush that stabilizes the dispersion and prevents the particle aggregation due to a ‘polymer brush effect’. UV absorption and TEM studies confirm that the synthesized silver composite particles have a core‐shell structure.

The new SET‐LRP (using Cu(0) powder for organic synthesis) was successfully used to produce well‐defined linear and star homo‐ and diblock‐copolymers of PMA, PSA, and P(MA‐b‐GA)n (where n = 1 or 4). The kinetic data showed that all SET‐LRP were first order and reached high conversions in a short period of time. The other advantage of using such a system is that the copper can easily be removed through filtration, allowing the production of highly pure polymer. The molecular weight distributions were well controlled with polydispersity indexes below 1.1 and the number‐average molecular weight close to theory, especially upon the addition of Cu(II)Br2/Me6‐TREN complex. The linear and star block copolymers were then hydrolyzed to produce the biocompatible amphiphilic P(MA‐b‐GA)n, where the glycerol side‐groups make the outer block hydrophilic. These blocks were micellized into water and found to have a Rg/RH equal to 0.8 and 1.59 for the liner and star blocks, respectively. This together with the TEM's supported that the linear blocks formed the classical core‐shell micelles, where as, the star blocks formed vesicles. We found direct support for the vesicle structure from a TEM where one vesicle squashed a second vesicle consistent with a hollow structure. Such vesicle structures have potential applications as delivery nanoscaled devices for drugs and other important biomolecules. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heterotelechelic polystyrene (PS), poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA), and poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA), containing both azide and triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) protected acetylene end groups, were prepared in good control (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.24) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The end groups were independently applied in two successive “click” reactions, that is: first the azide termini were functionalized and, after deprotection, the acetylene moieties were utilized for a second conjugation step. As a proof of concept, PS was consecutively functionalized with propargyl alcohol and azidoacetic acid, as confirmed by MALDI‐ToF MS. In addition, the same methodology was employed to modularly build up an ABC type triblock terpolymer. Size exclusion chromatography measurements demonstrated first coupling of PtBA to PS and, after the deprotection of the acetylene functionality on PS, connection of PMA, yielding a PMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PtBA triblock terpolymer. The reactions were driven to completion using a slight excess of azide functionalized polymers. Reduction of the residual azide groups into amines allowed easy removal of this excess of polymer by column chromatography. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The copper (I)‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition “click” reaction was successfully applied to prepare well‐defined 3, 6, and 12‐arms polystyrene and polyethylene glycol stars. This study focused particularly on making “perfect” star polymers with an exact number of arms, as well as developing techniques for their purification. Various methods of characterization confirmed the star polymers high purity, and the structural uniformity of the generated star polymers. In particular, matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization‐time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry revealed the quantitative transformation of the end groups on the linear polymer precursors and confirmed their quantitative coupling to the dendritic cores to yield star polymers with an exact number of arms. In addition to preparing well‐defined polystyrene and poly(ethylene glycol)homopolymer stars, this technique was also successfully applied to amphiphilic, PCL‐b‐PEG star polymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers containing poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and poly[poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGEEMA) side chains were synthesized by the combination of single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained comb copolymer was treated with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. Finally, PPEGMEA‐g‐PPEGEEMA graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP of poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate macromonomer using PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator via the grafting‐from route. The molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.20). This kind of double hydrophilic copolymer was found to be stimuli‐responsive to both temperature and ion (0.3 M Cl? and SO). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel amphiphilic graft copolymer consisting of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) backbones and hydrophobic poly(butyl methacrylate) side chains was synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization followed by hydrolysis of poly‐(methoxymethyl acrylate) backbone. A grafting‐from strategy was employed for the synthesis of graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index < 1.40). Hydrophobic side chains were connected to the backbone through stable C? C bonds instead of ester connections. Poly(methoxymethyl acrylate) backbone was easily hydrolyzed to poly(acrylic acid) backbone with HCl without affecting the hydrophobic side chains. The amphiphilic graft copolymer could form stable micelles in water. The critical micelle concentration in water was determined by a fluorescence probe technique. The morphology of the micelles was preliminarily explored with transmission electron microscopy and was found to be spheres. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This investigation reports the preparation of tailor‐made poly(2‐ethylhexyl acrylate) (PEHA) prepared via in situ living radical polymerization in the presence of layered silicates and characterization of this polymer/clay nanocomposite. Being a low Tg (?65 °C) material, PEHA has very good film formation property for which it is used in paints, adhesives, and coating applications. 2‐Ethylhexyl acrylate was polymerized at 90 °C using CuBr and Cu(0) as catalyst in combination with N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyl diethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as ligand. A tremendous enhancement in reaction rate and polymerization data was achieved when acetone was added as additive to increase the efficiency of the catalyst system. PEHA/clay nanocomposite was prepared at 90 °C using CuBr as catalyst in combination with PMDETA as ligand. Different types of clay with same loading were also used to study the effect on reaction rate. The molecular weight (Mn) and polydispersity index of the prepared nanocomposites were characterized by size exclusion chromatography. The active end group of the polymer chain was analyzed by 1H NMR analysis and by chain extension experiment. Polymer/clay interaction was studied by Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analyses. Distribution of clay in the polymer matrix was studied by the transmission electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that thermal stability of PEHA/clay nanocomposite increases on addition of nanoclay. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献
