The anionic ring‐opening polymerization of oxetanes containing hydroxyl groups was carried out with potassium tert‐butoxide as an initiator in the presence of 18‐crown‐6‐ether in N‐methylpyrrolidinone at 180 °C; it yielded corresponding multifunctional hyperbranched polymers: poly(3‐ethyl‐3‐hydroxymethyloxetane)s, with number‐average molecular weights of 2200–4100 in 83–95% yields, and poly(3‐methyl‐3‐hydroxymethyloxetane)s, with number‐average molecular weights of 4600–5200 in 70–95% yields. The synthesized poly(3‐ethyl‐3‐hydroxymethyloxetane)s and poly(3‐methyl‐3‐hydroxymethyloxetane)s were hyperbranched polyethers containing an oxetane moiety and many hydroxy groups at the ends. The postpolymerization of poly(3‐ethyl‐3‐hydroxymethyloxetane)s was performed in the presence of potassium tert‐butoxide and 18‐crown‐6‐ether in N‐methylpyrrolidinone at 180 °C; it yielded corresponding polymers with higher molecular weights in good yields. The cationic polymerization of poly(3‐ethyl‐3‐hydroxymethyloxetane) derivatives was carried out with boron trifluoride etherate as an initiator and was followed by alkaline hydrolysis; this yielded a new branched polymer, a poly(hyperbranched polyether), with many pendant hydroxy groups. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Branched and star‐branched polymers were successfully synthesized by the combination of two successive controlled radical polymerization methods. A series of linear and star poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐co‐poly(2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy) ethyl acrylate) statistical copolymers, P(nBA‐co‐BIEA)x, were first synthesized by nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP at T > 100 °C). The subsequent polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate by single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP at T = 25 °C), initiated from the brominated sites of the P(nBA‐co‐BIEA)x copolymer, produced branched or star‐branched poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA). Both types of polymerizations (NMP and SET‐LRP) exhibited features of a controlled polymerization with linear evolutions of logarithmic conversion versus time and number‐average molar masses versus conversion for final Mn superior to 80,000 g mol?1. The branched and star‐branched architectures with high molar mass and low number of branches were fully characterized by size exclusion chromatography. The Mark–Houwink Sakurada relationship and the analysis of the contraction factor (g′ = ([η]branched/[η]linear)M) confirmed the elaboration of complex PnBA. The zero‐shear viscosities of the linear, star‐shaped, branched, and star‐branched polymers were compared. The modeling of the rheological properties confirmed the synthesis of the branched architectures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Novel and well‐defined amphiphilic dendrimer‐star copolymer poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐(poly(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethylmethacrylate‐co‐oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate))2 with Y‐shaped arms were synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The investigation of thermal properties and the analysis of crystalline morphology indicate that the high‐branched structure of dendrimer‐star copolymers with Y‐shaped arms and the presence of amorphous P(MEO2MA‐co‐OEGMA) segments together led to the complete destruction of crystallinity of the PCL segments in the dendrimer‐star copolymer. In addition, the hydrophilicity–hydrophobicity transition of the dendrimer‐star copolymer film can be achieved by altering the external temperatures. The amphiphilic copolymers can self‐assemble into spherical nanomicelles in water. Because the lower critical solution temperature of the copolymers can be adjusted by varying the ratio of MEO2MA and OEGMA, the tunable thermosensitive properties can be observed by transmittance, dynamic laser light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The release rate of model drug chlorambucil from the micelles can be effectively controlled by changing the external temperatures, which indicates that these unique high‐branched amphiphilic copolymers have the potential applications in biomedical field. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We successfully synthesize the three‐ and six‐branched star poly(ε‐caprolactone)s with extremely small branched segments (USB‐SPCLs) using a facile pseudo‐one‐pot process in a pilot scale and investigate the effect of ultra‐small branches on their crystallization behaviors. The number of branched segments and the individual branched segment lengths for USB‐SPCLs are precisely controlled via manipulating monomer‐to‐core ratio, adjusting monomer‐to‐polymer conversion, end‐capping the terminal hydroxyl groups, and vacuum purification, which results in USB‐SPCLs having the branched segments below five degree of polymerization with a high yield exceeding 93%. The molecular weights obtained from 1H NMR spectroscopy are consistent with that obtained from MALDI‐TOF‐MS and the molecular weight distributions are narrow with Mw/Mn ≤ 1.2, indicating that USB‐SPCLs have mono‐dispersed branches. USB‐SPCLs have low melting temperatures and broad double‐melting peaks attributed to their extremely small branches, and the crystallization behaviors for USB‐SPCLs depend on the end group concentration. On the other hand, the glass transitions for USB‐SPCLs depend on the total molecular weights, regardless of the number and length of branched segments. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters, such as ε‐caprolactone, 1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one, and racemic lactide using the combination of 3‐phenyl‐1‐propanol as the initiator and triflimide (HNTf2) as the catalyst at room temperature with the [monomer]0/[initiator]0 ratio of 50/1 was investigated. The polymerizations homogeneously proceeded to afford poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one) (PDXO), and polylactide (PLA) with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersity indices. The molecular weight determined from an 1H NMR analysis (PCL, Mn,NMR = 5380; PDXO, Mn,NMR = 5820; PLA, Mn,NMR = 6490) showed good agreement with the calculated values. The 1H NMR and matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry analyses strongly indicated that the obtained compounds were the desired polyesters. The kinetic measurements confirmed the controlled/living nature for the HNTf2‐catalyzed ROP of cyclic esters. A series of functional alcohols, such as propargyl alcohol, 6‐azido‐1‐hexanol, N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)maleimide, 5‐hexen‐1‐ol, and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate, successfully produced end‐functionalized polyesters. In addition, poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐polyester, poly(δ‐valerolactone)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone), and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐polylactide were synthesized using the HNTf2‐catalyzed ROP. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of amphiphilic cationic random copolymers, namely poly[2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium chloride‐co‐stearyl methacrylate] or poly(MADQUAT‐co‐SMA), have been synthesized via conventional free‐radical copolymerization using 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator and n‐dodecanethiol as chain transfer agent. The resultant products were then characterized by FT‐IR, 1H NMR, MALDI‐TOF MS measurements. From the number‐average molecular weights of the copolymers, we can conclude that these copolymers have oligomeric structure with a limited number of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties in a short polymer chain. The reactivity ratios (rMADQUAT = 0.83, rSMA = 0.25) between the hydrophilic MADQUAT monomer and the hydrophobic SMA monomer were calculated by the Finemann and Ross method, which was based on the results of 1H NMR analysis. The surface activity of the random copolymers was studied by the combination of surface tension and contact angle measurement, and the results indicated that these copolymers possess relatively high surface activity. The critical aggregation concentrations (cac) of the copolymers in aqueous solution were determined by fluorescence probe method as well as surface tension measurement. The different nanoparticles of poly(MADQUAT‐co‐SMA) copolymers formed in pure water or ethanol‐water mixture were proved by the particle size and size distribution in the measurement of dynamic light scattering (DLS). Furthermore, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we could observe various self‐assembly morphologies of these random copolymer. All these results show that the amphiphilic cationic random copolymers have a good self‐assembly behavior, even if they are ill‐defined copolymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chain‐growth condensation polymerization of p‐aminobenzoic acid esters 1 bearing a tri(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether side chain on the nitrogen atom was investigated by using lithium 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) as a base. The methyl ester monomer 1a afforded polymer with low molecular weight and a broad molecular weight distribution, whereas the polymerization of the phenyl ester monomer 1b at ?20 °C yielded polymer with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 2800–13,400) and low polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.10–1.15). Block copolymerization of 1b and 4‐(octylamino)benzoic acid methyl ester ( 2 ) was further investigated. We found that block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 with defined molecular weight and low polydispersity was obtained when the polymerization of 1b was initiated with equimolar LiHMDS at ?20 °C and continued at ?50 °C, followed by addition of 2 and equimolar LiHMDS at ?10 °C. Spherical aggregates were formed when a solution of poly 1b in THF was dropped on a glass plate and dried at room temperature, although the block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 did not afford similar aggregates under the same conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis and characterization of novel hydroxyl‐functionalized oxetane‐inimers with varied alkyl chain length—3‐hydroxymethyl‐3‐methoxymethyloxetane, 3‐hydroxymethyl‐3‐propoxymethyloxetane, and 3‐hexoxymethyl‐3‐hydroxymethyloxetane—is reported. Cationic ring‐opening polymerization of these latent, cyclic AB2‐monomers leads to hyperbranched (hb) polyether polyols with degrees of branching between 34 and 69%, confirmed by inverse‐gated (IG) 13C NMR spectroscopy. The hyperbranching polymerization yielded apparent molecular weights (Mn) ranging from 500 to 2500 g mol?1 (size exclusion chromatography). Remarkably, by copolymerization of 1,1,1‐tris(4‐hydroxyphenyl)ethane as a “focal” unit, polymerization under slow monomer addition conditions lead to higher apparent molecular weights up to 11,220 g mol?1. The end groups of the hb polymers were studied via matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass and NMR spectrometry. By varying the alkyl chain length, tailoring of the solubility and glass transition temperatures of the materials is possible. Potential applications range from macroinitiators with defined polarity to tailoring of surface properties of antifouling materials. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Effective cationic addition polymerization of 1,4‐dioxene, a six‐membered cyclic olefin with two oxygen atoms adjacent to the double bond, was performed using a simple metal halide catalyst system in dichloromethane. The polymerization was controlled when the reaction was conducted using GaCl3 in conjunction with an isobutyl vinyl ether–HCl adduct as a cationogen at –78°C to give polymers with predetermined molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The long‐lived properties of the propagating species were further confirmed by a monomer addition experiment and the analyses of the product polymers by 1H NMR and MALDI–TOF–MS. Although highly clean propagation proceeded, the apparent rate constant changed during the controlled cationic polymerization of 1,4‐dioxene. The reason for the change was discussed based on polymerization results under various conditions. The obtained poly(1,4‐dioxene) exhibited a very high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 217°C and unique solubility. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

A new graft copolymer, poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) ‐graft‐poly(?‐caprolactone), was prepared by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) with coordination‐insertion ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The copolymerization of styrene (St) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was carried out at 60 °C in the presence of 2‐phenylprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate (PPDTB) using AIBN as initiator. The molecular weight of poly (2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) [poly(HEMA‐co‐St)] increased with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution was in the range of 1.09 ~ 1.39. The ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ?‐caprolactone was then initiated by the hydroxyl groups of the poly(HEMA‐co‐St) precursors in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). GPC and 1H‐NMR data demonstrated the polymerization courses are under control, and nearly all hydroxyl groups took part in the initiation. The efficiency of grafting was very high. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5523–5529, 2004  相似文献

Well‐defined poly(3‐alkyl‐4‐benzamide) was synthesized by means of chain‐growth condensation polymerization of phenyl 3‐octyl‐4‐(4‐octyloxybenzyl(OOB)amino)benzoate ( 1c ) from initiator 2 , followed by removal of the OOB groups on amide nitrogen of poly 1c . Polymerization of 1c with phenyl 4‐(trifluoromethyl)benzoate ( 2b ) in the presence of 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) and LiCl in THF at ?10 °C gave poly 1c with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.08) and a well‐defined molecular weight (Mn = 4480–12,700) determined by the feed ratio of monomer to initiator (from 10 to 30). The OOB groups of poly 1c were removed with H2SO4 to give the corresponding N‐unsubstituted poly(p‐benzamide) (poly 1c′ ) with low polydispersity. The solublity of poly 1c′ in polar organic solvents was dramatically higher than that of poly(p‐benzamide), demonstrating that introduction of an alkyl group on the aromatic ring is very effective for improving the solubility of poly(p‐benzamide). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Anionic polymerization of N‐methoxymethyl‐N‐isopropylacrylamide ( 1 ) was carried out with 1,1‐diphenyl‐3‐methylpentyllithium and diphenylmethyllithium, ‐potassium, and ‐cesium in THF at ?78 °C for 2 h in the presence of Et2Zn. The poly( 1 )s were quantitatively obtained and possessed the predicted molecular weights based on the feed molar ratios between monomer to initiators and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.1). The living character of propagating carbanion of poly( 1 ) either at 0 or ?78 °C was confirmed by the quantitative efficiency of the sequential block copolymerization using N,N‐diethylacrylamide as a second monomer. The methoxymethyl group of the resulting poly( 1 ) was completely removed to give a well‐defined poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), poly(NIPAM), via the acidic hydrolysis. The racemo diad contents in the poly(NIPAM)s could be widely changed from 15 to 83% by choosing the initiator systems for 1 . The poly(NIPAM)s obtained with Li+/Et2Zn initiator system possessed syndiotactic‐rich configurations (r = 75–83%), while either atactic (r = 50%) or isotactic poly(NIPAM) (r = 15–22%) was generated with K+/Et2Zn or Li+/LiCl initiator system, respectively. Atactic and syndiotactic poly(NIPAM)s (42 < r < 83%) were water‐soluble, whereas isotactic‐rich one (r < 31%) was insoluble in water. The cloud points of the aqueous solution of poly(NIPAM)s increased from 32 to 37 °C with the r‐contents. These indicated the significant effect of stereoregularity of the poly(NIPAM) on the water‐solubility and the cloud point in water © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An azido‐containing functional monomer, 11‐azido‐undecanoyl methacrylate, was successfully polymerized via ambient temperature single electron transfer initiation and propagation through the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (SET‐RAFT) method. The polymerization behavior possessed the characteristics of “living”/controlled radical polymerization. The kinetic plot was first order, and the molecular weight of the polymer increased linearly with the monomer conversion while keeping the relatively narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.22). The complete retention of azido group of the resulting polymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR analysis. Retention of chain functionality was confirmed by chain extension with methyl methacrylate to yield a diblock copolymer. Furthermore, the side‐chain functionalized polymer could be prepared by one‐pot/one‐step technique, which is combination of SET‐RAFT and “click chemistry” methods. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Application of chain‐growth condensation polymerization (CGCP) to obtain well‐defined polybenzoxazole (PBO) was examined. CGCP of both phenyl 3‐{(2‐methoxyethoxy)methoxy (MEM‐oxy)}‐4‐(octylamino)benzoate ( 1b ) (para‐substituted monomer) and phenyl 4‐MEM‐oxy‐3‐(octylamino)benzoate ( 3b ) (meta‐substituted monomer) was examined in the presence of metal disilazide base and phenyl 4‐nitro‐ or methylbenzoate 2 as an initiator. Polymerization of the latter monomer, but not the former, afforded polymer with controlled molecular weight based on the feed ratio of monomer to initiator and with a narrow molecular weight distribution. Accordingly, monomer 3c , in which the octyl group on the amino nitrogen of 3b was replaced with a 4‐(octyloxy)benzyl (OOB) group, was polymerized in the presence of lithium 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS), phenyl 4‐methylbenzoate ( 2b ), and LiCl in THF at 0 °C to yield poly 3c with well‐defined molecular weight (Mn = 4520–9080) and low polydispersity (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.11). Treatment of poly 3c with trifluoroacetic acid simultaneously removed the MEM and OOB groups, affording poly(o‐hydroxyamide) (poly 4 ) without scission of the amide linkages. Cyclodehydration of poly 4 proceeded at 350 °C to yield PBO (poly 5 ), which was insoluble in organic solvents and acids. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Factors affecting the syntheses of high‐molecular‐weight poly(2,5‐dialkyl‐1,4‐phenylene vinylene) by the acyclic diene metathesis polymerization of 2,5‐dialkyl‐1,4‐divinylbenzenes [alkyl = n‐octyl ( 2 ) and 2‐ethylhexyl ( 3 )] with a molybdenum or ruthenium catalyst were explored. The polymerizations of 2 by Mo(N‐2,6‐Me2C6H3) (CHMe2 Ph)[OCMe(CF3)2]2 at 25 °C was completed with both a high initial monomer concentration and reduced pressure, affording poly(p‐phenylene vinylene)s with low polydispersity index values (number‐average molecular weight = 3.3–3.65 × 103 by gel permeation chromatography vs polystyrene standards, weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.1–1.2), but the polymerization of 3 was not completed under the same conditions. The synthesis of structurally regular (all‐trans), defect‐free, high‐molecular‐weight 2‐ethylhexyl substituted poly(p‐phenylene vinylene)s [poly 3 ; degree of monomer repeating unit (DPn) = ca. 16–70 by 1H NMR] with unimodal molecular weight distributions (number‐average molecular weight = 8.30–36.3 × 103 by gel permeation chromatography, weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.6–2.1) and with defined polymer chain ends (as a vinyl group, ? CH?CH2) was achieved when Ru(CHPh)(Cl)2(IMesH2)(PCy3) or Ru(CH‐2‐OiPr‐C6H4)(Cl)2(IMesH2) [IMesH2 = 1,3‐bis(2,4,6‐trimethylphenyl)‐2‐imidazolidinylidene] was employed as a catalyst at 50 °C. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One‐step synthesis of block‐graft copolymers by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) by using a novel initiator was reported. Block‐graft copolymers were synthesized in one‐step by simultaneous RAFT polymerization of n‐butylmethacrylate (nBMA) and ROP of ε‐caprolacton (CL) in the presence of a novel macroinitiator (RAFT‐ROP agent). For this purpose, first epichlorohydrin (EPCH) was polymerized by using H2SO4 via cationic ring‐opening mechanism. And then a novel RAFT‐ROP agent was synthesized by the reaction of potassium ethyl xanthogenate and polyepichlorohydrin (poly‐EPCH). By using the RAFT‐ROP agent, poly[CL‐b‐EPCH‐b‐CL‐(g‐nBMA)] block‐graft copolymers were synthesized. The principal parameters such as monomer concentration, initiator concentration, and polymerization time that affect the one‐step polymerization reaction were evaluated. The block lengths of the block‐graft copolymers were calculated by using 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectrum. The block length could be adjusted by varying the monomer and initiator concentrations. The characterization of the products was achieved using 1H NMR, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, gel‐permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis, and fractional precipitation (γ) techniques. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. D,L ‐3‐Methylglycolide (MG) was successfully polymerized with bimetallic (Al/Zn) μ‐oxo alkoxide as an initiator in toluene at 90 °C. The effect of the initiator concentration and monomer conversion on the molecular weight was studied. It is shown that the polymerization of MG follows a living process. A kinetic study indicated that the polymerization approximates the first order in the monomer, and no induction period was observed. 1H NMR spectroscopy showed that the ring‐opening polymerization proceeds through a coordination–insertion mechanism with selective cleavage of the acyl–oxygen bond of the monomer. On the basis of 1H NMR and 13C NMR analyses, the selective cleavage of the acyl–oxygen bond of the monomer mainly occurs at the least hindered carbonyl groups (P1 = 0.84, P2 = 0.16). Therefore, the main chain of poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid) (50/50 molar ratio) obtained from the homopolymerization of MG was primarily composed of alternating lactyl and glycolyl units. The diblock copolymers poly(ϵ‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐alt‐glycolic acid) and poly(L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐alt‐glycolic acid) were successfully synthesized by the sequential living polymerization of related lactones (ϵ‐caprolactone or L ‐lactide). 13C NMR spectra of diblock copolymers clearly show their pure diblock structures. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The microwave‐assisted statistical copolymerization of 2‐phenyl‐2‐oxazoline with 2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline or 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline is discussed in this contribution. Kinetic studies of these statistical copolymerizations as well as reactivity ratio determinations were performed to investigate the monomer distribution in these copoly(2‐oxazoline)s, demonstrating the formation of quasi‐diblock copolymers. In addition, the synthesis of copolymer series with monomer concentrations ranging from 0 to 100 mol % is described. These copolymer series were characterized with 1H NMR spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and gel permeation chromatography. Moreover, the glass‐transition temperatures and solubility of these copolymers were studied, and this revealing better mixing of poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (pMeOx) with poly(2‐phenyl‐2‐oxazoline) (pPhOx) than poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (pEtOx) with poly(2‐phenyl‐2‐oxazoline) (pPhOx). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Applications of metal‐free living cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers using HCl · Et2O are reported. Product of poly(vinyl ether)s possessing functional end groups such as hydroxyethyl groups with predicted molecular weights was used as a macroinitiator in activated monomer cationic polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) with HCl · Et2O as a ring‐opening polymerization. This combination method is a metal‐free polymerization using HCl · Et2O. The formation of poly(isobutyl vinyl ether)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PIBVE‐b‐PCL) and poly(tert‐butyl vinyl ether)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PTBVE‐b‐PCL) from two vinyl ethers and CL was successful. Therefore, we synthesized novel amphiphilic, biocompatible, and biodegradable block copolymers comprised polyvinyl alcohol and PCL, namely PVA‐b‐PCL by transformation of acid hydrolysis of tert‐butoxy moiety of PTBVE in PTBVE‐b‐PCL. The synthesized copolymers showed well‐defined structure and narrow molecular weight distribution. The structure of resulting block copolymers was confirmed by 1H NMR, size exclusion chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of 2‐hydroxyalkyl methacrylates (HEMA and HPMA) on the styrene miniemulsion polymerizations stabilized by SDS/lauryl methacrylate (LMA) or SDS/stearyl methacrylate (SMA) were investigated. A mixed mode of particle nucleation (monomer droplet nucleation and homogeneous nucleation) is operative during polymerization. Homogeneous nucleation plays a crucial role in the polymerizations stabilized by SDS/LMA, whereas monomer droplet nucleation becomes more important in the polymerizations stabilized by SDS/SMA. The polymerization kinetics is insensitive to the type of 2‐hydroxyalkyl methacrylates, but the difference in the relative importance of monomer droplet nucleation and homogeneous nucleation is detected. Incorporation of 1‐pentanol (C5OH) into the reaction mixture also shows a significant influence on the polymerizations stabilized by SDS/LMA or SDS/SMA. This is attributed to the formation of a close‐packed structure of SDS and C5OH on the droplet surface, which acts as a barrier to the incoming oligomeric radicals. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
