Using a focused laser beam we stir a 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a magnetic trap. We observe that the steady states of the condensate correspond to an elliptic cloud, stationary in the rotating frame. These steady states depend nonlinearly on the stirring parameters (amplitude and frequency), and various solutions can be reached experimentally depending on the path followed in this parameter space. These states can be dynamically unstable and we observe that such instabilities lead to vortex nucleation in the condensate.  相似文献

Vortex formation in a stirred bose-einstein condensate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using a focused laser beam we stir a Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb confined in a magnetic trap and observe the formation of a vortex for a stirring frequency exceeding a critical value. At larger rotation frequencies we produce states of the condensate for which up to four vortices are simultaneously present. We have also measured the lifetime of the single vortex state after turning off the stirring laser beam.  相似文献

We report on the generation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a gas of chromium atoms, which have an exceptionally large magnetic dipole moment and therefore underlie anisotropic long-range interactions. The preparation of the chromium condensate requires novel cooling strategies that are adapted to its special electronic and magnetic properties. The final step to reach quantum degeneracy is forced evaporative cooling of 52Cr atoms within a crossed optical dipole trap. At a critical temperature of T(c) approximately 700 nK, we observe Bose-Einstein condensation by the appearance of a two-component velocity distribution. We are able to produce almost pure condensates with more than 50,000 condensed 52Cr atoms.  相似文献

We have studied the ground state configurations of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensation in a toroidal trap as the radius of the central Gaussian potential expands adiabatically. Firstly, we observe that the vortices are devoured successively into the central hole of the condensate to form a giant vortex as the radius of the trap expands. When all the pre-existing vortices are absorbed, the angular momentum of the system still increase as the radius of the
gaussian potential enlarges. When increasing the interaction strength, we find that more singly quantized vortices are squeezed into the condensate, but the giant vortex does not change.  相似文献

We study the expansion of an atomic Fermi gas interacting attractively with a Bose-Einstein condensate. We observe a slower evolution of the radial-to-axial aspect ratio which reveals the importance of the mutual attraction between the two samples during the first phase of the expansion. For large atom numbers, we also observe a bimodal momentum distribution of the Fermi gas, which reflects the spatial distribution of the mixture in trap. This effect allows us to extract important information on the overlap of the two species across the collapse.  相似文献

We demonstrate a spatially resolved autocorrelation measurement with a Bose-Einstein condensate and measure the evolution of the spatial profile of its quantum mechanical phase. Upon release of the condensate from the magnetic trap, its phase develops a form that we measure to be quadratic in the spatial coordinate. Our experiments also reveal the effects of the repulsive interaction between two overlapping condensate wave packets and we measure the small momentum they impart to each other.  相似文献

Motivated by the recent experiment at ENS [V. Bretin, S. Stock, Y. Seurin and, J. Dalibard, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 050403 (2004)], we study a rotating (non-)interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic-plus-Gaussian laser trap potential. By adjusting the amplitude of the Gaussian laser potential, one can make quadratic-plus-quartic potential, purely quartic potential, and quartic-minus-quadratic potential. We show that an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic-plus-Gaussian laser trap breaks the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian when rotational frequency is greater than one-half of the lowest energy surface mode frequency. We also show that by increasing the amplitude of the Gaussian laser trap, a vortex appears in a slowly rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. Moreover, one can also create a vortex in a slowly rotating non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate confined in harmonic-plus-Gaussian laser potential.Received: 24 June 2004, Published online: 24 August 2004PACS: 03.75.Lm Tunneling, Josephson effect, Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials, solitons, vortices and topological excitations - 05.30.Jp Boson systems  相似文献

Fast rotation of a Bose-Einstein condensate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We study the rotation of a 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a quadratic plus quartic potential. This trap configuration allows one to increase the rotation frequency of the gas above the trap frequency. In such a fast rotation regime we observe a dramatic change in the appearance of the quantum gas. The vortices which were easily detectable for a slower rotation become much less visible, and their surface density is well below the value expected for this rotation frequency domain. We discuss some possible tracks to account for this effect.  相似文献

The formation of vortices by topological phase engineering has been realized experimentally to create the first two- and four-quantum vortices in dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider a similar system, but in addition to the Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap we employ an additional hexapole field. By controlling cyclically the strengths of these magnetic fields, we show that a fixed amount of vorticity can be added to the condensate in each cycle. In an adiabatic operation of this vortex pump, the appearance of vortices into the condensate is interpreted as the accumulation of a local Berry phase. Our design can be used as an experimentally realizable vortex source for possible vortex-based applications of dilute Bose-Einstein condensates.  相似文献

Vortices were imprinted in a Bose-Einstein condensate using topological phases. Sodium condensates held in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap were transformed from a nonrotating state to one with quantized circulation by adiabatically inverting the magnetic bias field along the trap axis. Using surface wave spectroscopy, the axial angular momentum per particle of the vortex states was found to be consistent with 2 variant Planck's over 2pi or 4 variant Planck's over 2pi, depending on the hyperfine state of the condensate.  相似文献

Coreless vortices were phase imprinted in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The three-component order parameter of F=1 sodium condensates held in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap was manipulated by adiabatically reducing the magnetic bias field along the trap axis to zero. This distributed the condensate population across its three spin states and created a spin texture. Each spin state acquired a different phase winding which caused the spin components to separate radially.  相似文献

We report on a study of the spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By solving the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equations for this system, we find three ground-state phases. Moreover, we show that a substantial orbital angular momentum accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking emerges spontaneously in a certain parameter regime. We predict that all these phases can be observed in the spin-1 87Rb condensate by changing the number of atoms or the trap frequency.  相似文献

We study the way in which the geometry of the trapping potential affects the vortex velocity in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined by a toroidal trap. We calculate the vortex precession velocity through a simple relationship between such a velocity and the gradient of the numerically obtained vortex energy. We observe that our results correspond very closely to the velocity calculated through time evolution simulations. However, we find that the estimates derived from available velocity field formulas present appreciable differences. To resolve such discrepancies, we further study the induced velocity field, analyzing the effect of global features of the condensate on such a field and on the precession velocity.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of an inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a one-dimensional harmonic trap and a moving random potential of finite extent. Above the critical velocity, a part of a condensate glues to the moving random potential with a consequent displacement of the condensate center-of-mass along the harmonic trap. We show that the center-of-mass turning point provides a direct measure of the average drag force acting on the condensate.  相似文献

We predict a dynamical classical superfluid-insulator transition in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical and a magnetic potential. In the tight-binding limit, this system realizes an array of weakly coupled condensates driven by an external harmonic field. For small displacements of the parabolic trap about the equilibrium position, the condensates coherently oscillate in the array. For large displacements, the condensates remain localized on the side of the harmonic trap with a randomization of the relative phases. The superfluid-insulator transition is due to a discrete modulational instability, occurring when the condensate center of mass velocity is larger than a critical value.  相似文献

We report the observation of coexisting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and Fermi gas in a magnetic trap. With a very small fraction of thermal atoms, the 7Li condensate is quasipure and in thermal contact with a 6Li Fermi gas. The lowest common temperature is 0.28 microK approximately 0.2(1)T(C) = 0.2(1)T(F) where T(C) is the BEC critical temperature and T(F) the Fermi temperature. The 7Li condensate has a one-dimensional character.  相似文献

We experimentally study the diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a magnetic lattice, realized by a set of 372 parallel gold conductors which are microfabricated on a silicon substrate. The conductors generate a periodic potential for the atoms with a lattice constant of 4 microm. After exposing the condensate to the lattice for several milliseconds we observe diffraction up to fifth order by standard time of flight imaging techniques. The experimental data can be quantitatively interpreted with a simple phase imprinting model. The demonstrated diffraction grating offers promising perspectives for the construction of an integrated atom interferometer.  相似文献

We study the stability of attractive atomic Bose-Einstein condensate and the macroscopic quantum many-body tunneling (MQT) in the anharmonic trap. We utilize correlated two-body basis function which keeps all possible two-body correlations. The anharmonic parameter (λ) is slowly tuned from harmonic to anharmonic. For each choice of λ the many-body equation is solved adiabatically. The use of the van der Waals interaction gives realistic picture which substantially differs from the mean-field results. For weak anharmonicity, we observe that the attractive condensate gains stability with larger number of bosons compared to that in the pure harmonic trap. The transition from resonances to bound states with weak anharmonicity also differs significantly from the earlier study of [N. Moiseyev, L.D. Carr, B.A. Malomed, Y.B. Band, J. Phys. B 37, L193 (2004)]. We also study the tunneling of the metastable condensate very close to the critical number N cr of collapse and observe that near collapse the MQT is the dominant decay mechanism compared to the two-body and three-body loss rate. We also observe the power law behavior in MQT near the critical point. The results for pure harmonic trap are in agreement with mean-field results. However, we fail to retrieve the power law behavior in anharmonic trap although MQT is still the dominant decay mechanism.  相似文献

We have investigated the center-of-mass oscillations of a 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate in an elongated magneto-static trap. We start from a trapped condensate and we transfer part of the atoms to another trapped level, by applying a radio-frequency pulse. The new condensate is produced far from its equilibrium position in the magnetic potential, and periodically collides with the parent condensate. We discuss how both the damping and the frequency shift of the oscillations are affected by the mutual interaction between the two condensates, in a wide range of trapping frequencies. The experimental data are compared with the prediction of a mean-field model. Received 28 May 2001  相似文献
