Turbulent tube flow and the flow through a porous medium of aqueous hydroxypropylguar (HPG) solutions in concentrations from 100 wppm to 5000 wppm is investigated. Taking the rheological flow curves into account reveals that the effectiveness in turbulent tube flow and the efficiency for the flow through a porous medium both start at the same onset wall shear stress of 1.3 Pa. The similarity of the curves = ( w ) and = ( w ), respectively, leads to a simple linear relation / =k, where the constantk or proportionality depends uponc. This offers the possibility to deduce (for turbulent tube flow) from (for flow through a porous medium). In conjunction with rheological data, will reveal whether, and if yes to what extent, drag reduction will take place (even at high concentrations). The relation of our treatment to the model-based Deborah number concept is shown and a scale-up formula for the onset in turbulent tube flow is deduced as well.

Summary Let denote the congruence of null geodesics associated with a given optical observer inV 4. We prove that determines a unique collection of vector fieldsM() ( =1, 2, 3) and (0) overV 4, satisfying a weak version of Killing's conditions. This allows a natural interpretation of these fields as the infinitesimal generators of spatial rotations and temporal translation relative to the given observer. We prove also that the definition of the fieldsM() and (0) is mathematically equivalent to the choice of a distinguished affine parameter f along the curves of, playing the role of a retarded distance from the observer. The relation between f and other possible definitions of distance is discussed.

Calculation of the temperature field around a buried point- and linesource, respectively, when the boundary condition is Newton's law
The steady state temperature field in a semiinfinite body caused by a buried point- and linesource, respectively, has been analytically calculated. The comparison with a simple approach (additional-layer) shows that the greatest angle between the normal of the wall and the heat flux density in the additional-layer, describes the quality of the approach better than the Biot-number Bi=L/ does.

An experimental study was done to quantify the effects of a variety of background particulates on the delayed laminar-turbulent transition of a thermally stabilized boundary layer in water. A Laser-Doppler Velocimeter system was used to measure the location of boundary layer transition on a 50 mm diameter, 9:1 fineness ratio ellipsoid. The ellipsoid had a 0.15 m RMS surface finish. Boundary layer transition locations were determined for length Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.0 × 106 to 7.5 × 106. The ellipsoid was tested in three different heating conditions in water seeded with particles of four distinct size ranges. For each level of boundary layer heating, measurements of transition were made for clean water and subsequently, water seeded with 12.5 m, 38.9 m, 85.5 m and 123.2 m particles, alternately. The three surface heating conditions tested were no heating, T = 10°C and T = 15°C where T is the difference between the inlet model heating water temperature, T i, and free stream water temperature, T . The effects of particle concentration were studied for 85.5 m and 123.2 m particulates. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. The 12.5 m and 38.9 m particles has no measurable effect on transition for any of the test conditions. However, transition was significantly affected by the 85.5 m and 123.2 m particles. Above a length Reynolds number of 4 × 106 the boundary layer transition location moved forward on the body due to the effect of the 85.5 m particles for all heating conditions. The largest percentage changes in transition location from clean water, were observed for 85.5 m particles seeded water.Transition measurements made with varied concentrations of background particulates indicated that the effect of the 85.5 m particles on the transition of the model reached a plateau between 2.65 particulates/ml concentration and 4.2 particles/ml. Measurements made with 123.3 m particles at concentrations up to 0.3 part/ml indicated no similar plateau.

The effect of the temperature accommodation coefficient T on the relations at the Knudsen layer edge is investigated for strong evaporation using the moment method. An explicit expression for the dimensionless density as a function of the temperature and the Mach number M is obtained for 0 < T < 1. For T = 0 the entire solution is obtained in explicit form. It is shown that for = 0 and a condensation coefficient << 1 the temperature outside the Knudsen layer changes sharply as M varies from 0 to a certain value much less than unity after which the temperature ceases to depend on . For the model of specular reflection of the molecules from the surface the density and the temperature outside the Knudsen layer are found in explicit form as functions of the Mach number.

In a number of experiments (see [1], in which experimental papers are listed), diffusion has been observed in the radial direction in the process of flow of a mixture along tubes at low pressures. The heavier molecules accumulate near the tube axis. The attempt made in [1] to explain this phenomenon by the influence of the Burnett contribution to the diffusion did not lead to success, and the Burnett terms in the radial diffusion velocity indicate a motion of heavy molecules away from the tube axis. In the present paper, a complete analysis is given of this phenomenon. We consider the problem of the flow of a mixture along a cylindrical tube of finite length for given pressure difference p between its ends. On the basis of the hydrodynamic equations of the Burnett and super-Burnett approximations, a consistent asymptotic (with respect to the small parameter ) solution is given; = (p/p)R/L is the relative change in the pressure along the tube at a distance of order R (R and L are the radii and length of the tube). Radial diffusion occurs in the quadratic approximation in . It is shown that the radial diffusion velocity contains new terms not present in [1]; these are due to the inhomogeneity of the temperature and the pressure over the tube section, the expansion of the gas, and the super-Burnett correction to the diffusion velocity. The most important is the thermodiffusion term, which is determined by the hydrodynamic equations of the Navier-Stokes approximation. The remaining terms have order relative to it of Kn2 (Kn = 1 /R is the Knudsen number, and 1 is the mean free path of the molecules). The expression obtained for the diffusion velocity agrees in sign with the experiment.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 91–96, September–October, 1979.I am grateful to G. The molecular theory of Doi has been used as a framework to characterize the rheological behavior of polymeric liquid crystals at the low deformation rates for which it was derived, and an appropriate extension for high deformation rates is presented. The essential physics behind the Doi formulation has, however, been retained in its entirety. The resulting four-parameter equation enables prediction of the shearing behavior at low and high deformation rates, of the stress in extensional flows, of the isotropic-anisotropic phase transition and of the molecular orientation. Extensional data over nearly three decades of elongation rate (10–2–101) and shearing data over six decades of shear rate (10–2–104) have been correlated using this analysis. Experimental data are presented for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous shearing stress fields. For the latter, a 20-fold range of capillary tube diameters has been employed and no effects of system geometry or the inhomogeneity of the flow-field are observed. Such an independence of the rheological properties from these effects does not occur for low molecular weight liquid crystals and this is, perhaps, the first time this has been reported for polymeric lyotropic liquid crystals; the physical basis for this major difference is discussed briefly. For many solid materials the stress relaxation process obeys the universal relationF = – (d/d lnt)max = (0.1 ± 0.01) ( 0 i ), regardless of the structure of the material. Here denotes the stress,t the time, 0 the initial stress of the experiment and i the internal stress. A cooperative model accounting for the similarity in relaxation behaviour between different materials was developed earlier. Since this model has a spectral character, the concepts of linear viscoelasticity are used here to evaluate the corresponding prediction of the dynamic mechanical properties, i.e. the frequency dependence of the storageE () and lossE () moduli. Useful numerical approximations ofE () andE () are also evaluated. It is noted that the universal relation in stress relaxation had a counterpart in the frequency dependence ofE (). The theoretical prediction of the loss factor for high-density polyethylene is compared with experimental results. The agreement is good.

A model of a powder with a variable surface temperature is considered. A stability criterion for the steady-state burning of powders at constant pressure is found on the assumption that all the processes in the gas phase and the reaction layer of the condensed phase are inertialess. It is shown that the stability region is determined by two parameters: K=(T1 – t0) ( ln m/T0)p and r=(T1/T0)p (here T1 is the surface temperature, T1 is the initial temperature of the powder, m is the mass burning rate, p is pressure). Burning is always stable if < 1. If > 1, the burning process is stable only when r > ( – 1)2/ / + 1.The author expresses his appreciation to A. S. Kompaneits, O. I. Leipunskii, A. G. Istratov, V. B. The structure of the electromagnetic electrode layers that are produced in flows across a magnetic field by a completely ionized and inviscid plasma with good conductivity and a high magnetic Reynolds number is examined in a linear approximation. Flow past a corrugated wall and flow in a plane channel of slowly varying cross section with segmented electrodes are taken as specific examples. The possibility is demonstrated of the formation of nondissipative electrode layers with thicknesses on the order of the Debye distance or electron Larmor radius and of dissipative layers with thicknesses on the order of the skin thickness, as calculated from the diffusion rate in a magnetic field [2].In plasma flow in a transverse magnetic field, near the walls, along with the gasdynamie boundary layers, which owe their formation to viscosity, thermal conductivity, etc. (because of the presence of electromagnetic fields, their structures may vary considerably from that of ordinary gasdynamic layers), proper electromagnetic boundary layers may also be produced. An example of such layers is the Debye layer in which the quasi-neutrality of the plasma is upset. No less important, in a number of cases, is the quasi-neutral electromagnetic boundary layer, in which there is an abrupt change in the frozen-in parameter k=B/p (B is the magnetic field and p is the density of the medium). This layer plays a special role when we must explicitly allow for the Hall effect and the related formation of a longitudinal electric field (in the direction of the veloeiryv of the medium). We will call this the magnetic layer. The magnetic boundary layer can be dissipative as well as noudissipative (see below). The dissipative magnetic layer has been examined in a number of papers: for an incompressible medium with a given motion law in [1], for a compressible medium with good conductivity in [2], and with poor conductivity in [3]. In the present paper, particular attention will be devoted to nondissipative magnetic boundary layers.

Calculations of the flow of the mixture 0.94 CO2+0.05 N2+0.01 Ar past the forward portion of segmentai bodies are presented. The temperature, pressure, and concentration distributions are given as a function of the pressure ahead of the shock wave and the body velocity. Analysis of the concentration distribution makes it possible to formulate a simplified model for the chemical reaction kinetics in the shock layer that reflects the primary flow characteristics. The density distributions are used to verify the validity of the binary similarity law throughout the shock layer region calculated. The flow of a CO2+N2+Ar gas mixture of varying composition past a spherical nose was examined in [1]. The basic flow properties in the shock layer were studied, particularly flow dependence on the free-stream CO2 and N2 concentration.New revised data on the properties of the Venusian atmosphere have appeared in the literature [2, 3] One is the dominant CO2 concentration. This finding permits more rigorous formulation of the problem of blunt body motion in the Venus atmosphere, and attention can be concentrated on revising the CO2 thermodynamic and kinetic properties that must be used in the calculation. The problem of supersonic nonequilibrium flow past a blunt body is solved within the framework of the problem formulation of [4].Notation V body velocity - shock wave standoff - universal gas constant - ratio of frozen specific heats - hRt/m enthalpy per unit mass undisturbed stream P pressure - density - T temperature - m molecular weight - cp specific heat at constant pressure - (X) concentration of component X (number of particles in unit mass) - R body radius of curvature at the stagnation point - j rate of j-th chemical reaction shock layer P V 2 pressure - density - TT temperature - mm molecular weight Translated from Izv.
Temperature dependence of surface tension of pure refrigerants from triple point up to the critical point
The surface tension of six fluids (SF6, CCl3F, CCl2F2, CClF3, CBrF3, CHClF2) have been measured by means of a modified capillary rise method. The liquid vapor densities, which are needed to calculate the surface tension, have partly been determined by means of refractive indices simultaneously measured in the same apparatus. The temperature dependence of the surface tension is described by an extended van der Waals power law =O(Tc-T)(1+...). For simple fluids one term and for polar and associating fluids two terms are necessary and sufficient. The critical exponent is found to be 1.284 ± 0.005 and nearly independent of the molecular structure.

The extended correspondence law for the ideal dynamic viscosity and the ideal thermal conductivity of pure substances
For the calculation of the ideal dynamic viscosity Ideal (T) and the ideal thermal conductivity ideal (T) the critical temperatureT kr, the critical specific volumev kr, the molecular massM, the critical parameter kr, and the molar isochoric heat capacityC v(T) is needed. Not only the theoretically determined but also the empirically determined extended correspondence law gives for practical use a good representation of the measured data, which for the associating substances and the quantum substances is not so good as for the normal substances.

Nonstationary currents are examined in a dense magnetized plasma with 1, in which energy release and heat loss by thermal conduction and radiation are possible. Solutions are found in two limiting cases: ¦f¦ ¦ div (T)¦ and ¦f¦ ¦ div(T)¦ (f is the radiation intensity, is the coefficient of heat conduction, and T is the temperature). In the first case a solution was obtained of some problems of the cooling and heating of a plasma illustrated in part by the evolution in time of the temperature profile in the boundary layer. In the second case an isomorphic solution was found for an arbitrary dependence of the coefficient of heat conduction on the temperature, pressure, and magnetic field.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 1, pp. 3–8, January–February, 1972.The author is grateful to G. A method by which the transport of anisotropic radiative multiple scattering can be predicted is developed in this paper. A one-dimensional integral intensity model and a three-dimensional diffusion intensity model are both constructed. The former provides a closed-form solution, while the latter involves successive approximation and Gauss's quadrature. On the basis of these methods, the reflection and transmission of solar radiation in a homogeneous cloud layer are computed. The results differ from those for isotropic and Rayleigh scattering assumptions and illustrate the effects on transmission and reflectivity of optical thickness, wavelength, incidence angle, and albedo of single scattering.Nomenclature D + transmitted diffusion radiation intensity [W/cm2 sr · m] - D reflected diffusion radiation intensity [W/cm2 sr · m] - I pencil of radiation or specific intensity [W/cm2 sr · m] - I 0 solar irradiance [W/cm2] - K extinction cross-section or total cross-section, + - s (u, ), unit scattered radiation vector - s 0 (u 0, 0), unit incident radiation vector - t optical thickness - u cosine of the viewing angle, , which is measured from the vertical - u 0 cosine of the angle of incident, 0, which is measured from the vertical - absorption cross-section - scattering function - absorption coefficient - scattering angle, s · s 0 - scattering cross-section - scattered azimuthal angle - 0 incident azimuthal angle - a sphere - a solid angle - 0 albedo of single scattering,

At small flow rates, the study of long-wavelength perturbations reduces to the solution of an approximate nonlinear equation that describes the change in the film thickness [1–3]. Steady waves can be obtained analytically only for values of the wave numbers close to the wave number n that is neutral in accordance with the linear theory [1, 2]. Periodic solutions were constructed numerically for the finite interval of wave numbers 0.5n n in [4]. In the present paper, these solutions are found in almost the complete range of wave numbers 0 n that are unstable in the linear theory. In particular, soliton solutions of this equation are obtained. The results were partly published in [5].Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 142–146, July–August, 1980.

By utilizing available experimental data for net energy transfer spectra for homogeneous turbulence, contributions P(, ) to the energy transfer at a wavenumber from various other wavenumbers are calculated. This is done by fitting a truncated power-exponential series in and to the experimental data for the net energy transfer T(), and using known properties of P(, ). Although the contributions P(, ) obtained by using this procedure are not unique, the results obtained by using various assumptions do not differ significantly. It seems clear from the results that for a region where the energy entering a wavenumber band dominates that leaving, much of the energy entering the band comes from wavenumbers which are about an order of magnitude smaller. That is, the energy transfer is rather nonlocal. This result is not significantly dependent on Reynolds number (for turbulence Reynolds numbers based on microscale from 3 to 800). For lower wavenumbers, where more energy leaves than enters a wavenumber band, the energy transfer into the band is more local, but much of the energy then leaves at distant wavenumbers.

In a semiinfinite cylinder composed of anisotropic linearised elastic material, loaded on the base and clamped along the lateral surface, it is known that the solution as measured, for example, by the strainenergy flux through a plane crossection decays longitudinally at most exponentially with respect to the axial distance from the base. There is, however, also a transverse radial decay of the solution, again measured for example by the strainenergy, occurring from the region close to the cylinder's axis to the region near the lateral surface, where the energy vanishes. This problem is considered in the present paper which discusses a circular semiinfinite cylinder and derives an estimate for the strainenergy contained in a cylindrical annulus at a given distance from the base and of variable height, and whose outer surface coincides with the lateral surface of the cylinder. It is shown that the strainenergy decays at most algebraically to zero as the inner radius of the annulus increases to that of the cylinder.Sommario.
