Poly(propyleneimine) [PPI-(NH2) n ] and poly(amidoamine) [PAMAM-(NH2) n ] dendrimers with n = 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64, have been functionalized with a semifluorinated carboxylic acid [CF3(CF2)7CH2CH2COOH] on the surface. The thermal and liquid crystal properties of the resulting ionic dendrimers have been studied by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All dendrimers show a smectic A (SmA) mesophase, except that derived from the fifth generation of PPI, which displays a columnar mesophase. The mesomorphic behaviour of the dendrimers is attributed to the formation of ionic bonds and to the microsegregation of the dendritic branches and the fluorinated peripheral chains.  相似文献

The orientation of E7 liquid crystal (LC) confined within 200 nm diameter cylindrical cavities of Anodisc membranes are investigated by FTIR dichroism techniques. The cavity walls of the confining pores were chemically modified with different length perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PCAs, C n F2n+1COOH, n = 3, 4, 5, 6) at 1, 3 and 5 mM concentrations. From the FTIR spectra of PCA‐treated alumina Anodsic membranes, we found salt formation between the –COOH group of the PCAs and the Anodisc membranes. From the FTIR spectra of LC‐filled Anodisc membranes, we found an abrupt alignment direction change, from parallel to perpendicular, of the LC molecules along the long axis of the cavities between n = 4 and n = 5 for the 1 mM concentration of PCA. However, for the 5 mM concentration of PCA, the parallel‐to‐perpendicular alignment direction of LC molecules changed between n = 3 and n = 4. These LC orientation changes for PCA‐treated Anodisc membranes occurred at shorter length than for hydrocarbon carboxylic acid (HCA, C n H2n+1COOH)‐treated Anodisc membranes. This change may be caused by the lower surface energy of the –(CF2) n CF3 chain of PCA than that of the –(CH2) n CH3 chain of HCA.  相似文献

However for the 4% concentration of aliphatic acid the parallel to perpendicular alignment direction of LC molecules changed between n=5 and n=6. A series of 2-(4-n-alkylphenyl)indenes (3) with different alkyl substituents (CH3 to C10H21) were synthesized and systematically characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction compared with 2-phenylindene (3a). Depending on the alkyl chain length, highly ordered crystal-smectic E mesophases were observed and confirmed by X-ray diffraction for the derivatives 3h-3k with heptyl to decyl chains (n = 6-9). For 3f with a pentyl side chain (n = 4), an X-ray crystal structure analysis was carried out.  相似文献

A homologous series of carborane-containing Schiff's bases 1A[n] (n = 1-10) was prepared and compared with the analogous series 1B[n] derived from terephthaldehyde. An exponential fit of the T NI values for both series yielded a quantitative assessment of the effect of ring structure on mesophase stability. This includes the T NI value for n→∞ (86°C for 1A[n] and 209°C for 1B[n]) and steepness of descent (0.135 for 1A[n] and 0.095 for 1B[n]). The difference in behaviour of the two series was attributed, largely, to conformational properties of the central rings A and B. Electronic interactions between the central rings and the π-substituents were investigated by UV spectroscopy and by quantum-mechanical calculations. The effect of replacement of O with CH2 in the terminal chain of 1[n] on the namatic phase stability was assessed for n = 5-7.  相似文献

Six banana-shaped compounds with a central core based on a 4,6-dichloro-1,3-phenylene group were synthesized by varying the terminal chains (R = OC10H21 or OC11H21) and the lateral substituents (X = H, F or Cl). Their mesophases were characterized by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, triangular wave method, and X-ray diffractometry. Mesomorphic properties of the banana-shaped mesogens with an olefinic group (R = OC11H21) as a terminal chain are sensitive to lateral halogen substituents as much as those of the analogues with a saturated group (R = OC10H21). The compounds with X = F showed an antiferroelectric switchable smectic phase, which has been designated a B2 phase. The compounds without a lateral halogen substituent only formed a nematic phase, while the compounds with X = Cl did not exhibit a mesophase in the melt.  相似文献

Four series of liquid crystal dimers have been prepared containing either ether-linked or methylene-linked spacers. Changing the spacer from being ether-linked, i.e. O(CH2) n O, to methylene-linked, i.e. (CH2) n +2, results in decreased nematic-isotropic transition temperatures, and this reduction is more pronounced for odd-membered spacers. By contrast, the entropy change associated with the nematic-isotropic transition is higher for an even-membered methylene-linked dimer than for the corresponding ether-linked material. This trend is reversed for odd members. These observations are completely in accord with the predictions of a theoretical model developed by Luckhurst and co-workers in which the only difference between the dimers is their shape. For the highly non-linear pentamethylene-linked dimers, only those with a short terminal chain exhibited fluid smectic behaviour, specifically, a monotropic alternating SmC structure which allowed for the efficient packing of the bent molecules. Once the terminal chain reached a value of m = 9, a modulated ordered smectic phase was observed. For even-membered dimers, which exhibit only nematic phases upon melting for short terminal chain lengths, smectic phase behaviour was promoted with increasing terminal chain length, as is conventionally observed. Even-membered ether-linked dimers exhibited a SmC phase whereas even-membered methylene-linked dimers exhibited an ordered smectic G/J phase. Thus, it would appear that the differences in the transitional properties of ether- and methylene-linked dimers can be accounted for largely in terms of geometrical factors.  相似文献

Three analogous series of symmetric banana-shaped liquid crystalline molecules containing bisnaphthyl units were synthesized and characterized. The effects of linking groups (on the side wings) and lateral meta-fluoro substitutions (on the middle outer rings) on the mesogenic properties were examined. The type of mesophase depends on the lengths of terminal alkoxy chains. Thus, achiral molecules with shorter flexible chains (n = 8) exhibit a rectangular columnar (B1) phase, while analogous derivatives with longer flexible chains (n = 12) display the B2 phase. All lateral meta-fluoro substituted analogues (series II) possess the lowest isotropization temperatures and the narrowest mesophasic ranges of the B1 and B2 phases. The B1 and B2 phases were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and electro-optical (EO) switching experiments. An electric field-induced transition from an antiferroelectric (tristable) state to a ferroelectric (bistable) state was observed in the EO measurements. Spontaneous polarization (by switching current response), tilt angle of chiral domains (by POM), and transmittance-voltage measurements of the B2 phase in related compounds have been surveyed in this study.  相似文献

6H-Dibenzo[d,e][1,2]thiazine substituted with four 3,4-dioctyloxyphenyl groups forms a room temperature discotic phase with a clearing temperature of 104°C. Oxidation of the thiazine 2b with either metal oxides (PbO2 or AgO) or SO2Cl2 gave a moderately stable radical 1b (a N = 0.95 mT, g = 2.0045). Full conversion of 2b to 1b was observed with AgO in a toluene/MeCN mixture or with SO2Cl2. The radical 1b was isolated in the neat form with the latter oxidant. It shows sensitivity to molecular oxygen, which hampered its purification and subsequent thermal and magnetic studies.  相似文献

A series of eight liquid crystalline compounds, N,N'-bis[(2-hydroxy-4-alkoxyphenyl)methylene]benzene-1,4-diamines, has been synthesized and characterized. These homologous compounds differ in the length of terminal alkyl group C n H2n+1 wherein n is an even number ranging from 4 to 18. The spectroscopic techniques, FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR, were employed to characterize the molecular structure. The transition temperatures of all the title compounds and their mesophases were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy. All the compounds were smectogenic, exhibiting both tilted and non-tilted molecular orientation in their smectic phases. Further investigation to ascertain the anisotropic nature of subphases within the smectogenic region was carried out using X-ray diffraction.  相似文献

Two homologous series of chiral swallow-tailed thioester materials, 1-ethylpropyl (R)-2-[3-fluoro-4-(4'-alkyloxybiphenylcarbonylthio)phenoxy]propionates, I-6 (m = 8-12), and 1-ethylpropyl (R)-2-[3-methyl-4-(4'-alkyloxybiphenylcarbonylthio)phenoxy]propionates, II-6 (m = 8-12), have been synthesized and their mesomorphic phases studied. The results show that materials I-6 (m = 8-12) with a fluoro substituent, display the phase sequence I-BPII-N*-SmC*-Cr, whereas materials II-6 (m = 8-12) with a methyl substituent display the phase sequence I-N*-TGBA*-SmA*-Cr during cooling. The physical properties of the SmC* phase in materials I-6 were measured. The results show that the maximum P s values are in the range 91-95 nC cm-2 and the maximum tilt angles are about 34-37°.  相似文献

New chiral banana-shaped liquid crystals with chiral 3-(alkoxy)propoxy terminal groups (Pn-O-PIMB5*-4O, n = 7, 8, 9 and 10) were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties and phase structures investigated by means of electro-optic measurements, polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and second harmonic generation measurements. Most of these chiral bent-core mesogens (n = 7-9) showed the antiferroelectric B2 phase, whereas P10-O-PIMB5*-4O exhibited the B7 phase. Comparing with the previously reported homologue Pn-O-PIMB(n-2)*, we conclude that the terminal chain structure, particularly the position of chiral centres, plays an important role in the emergence of particular phase structures.  相似文献

Novel porphyrin derivatives with twelve flexible alkyl chains, namely meso-tetra[4-(3,4,5-n-trialkoxybenzoylamino)phenyl]porphyrins (1a, n = 12; 1b, n = 16) and the zinc complex (2a) were synthesized. The mesomorphic properties were investigated by DSC, WAXD and polarizing optical microscopy; the results showed that 1a and 2a exhibit a pseudo-hexagonal columnar phase, and 1b a rectangular (Col) phase over a wide temperature range including room temperature.  相似文献

A large number of binary mixtures of 4-pentyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5OCB) and 4,4'-di(alkoxy)azoxybenzenes (nOAB) with n = 5, 6 and 7 have been studied by optical microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction methods. Over a wide concentration range the smectic A (SmA) phase is induced and the nematic (N) phase of the parent compounds is absent. Instead of the tilted smectic C phase of 7OAB an orthogonal SmA phase is observed when only 12% of the host molecules are replaced by 5OCB molecules. Moreover, in some mixtures the thermal stability of the induced SmA phase is found to be more than 1.6 times the stability of the mesophses in the pure compounds. The N-isotropic or Sm-I transition temperatures slowly increases with increasing concentrations, reaching a maximum at x 5OCB = 0.50 and then falling quite rapidly. In all the mixtures the enthalpy changes at the N-I transitions follow the simple additivity rule. In no mixture, except mixture C2, could the SmA-N transition be detected by DSC, although in all the mixtures the ratio T NA/T NI is found to be more than 0.95, which is in contradiction to McMillan's theory. Average intermolecular distances are found to have a minimum value near the equimolar concentration. From the concentration dependence of the smectic layer spacings it also appears that in all the mixtures the smectic Ad phase evolves from the smectic A1 phase with increasing concentrations.  相似文献

The calcium phosphate which corresponds to the formula Ca3(PO)4 · nH2O (2<n<3) was isolated from solutions with Ca/P molar ratio 0.2 and pH 7. The compound was characterised by chemical and thermogravimetric analyses, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The FTIR spectra were compared with spectra of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) in the atlases for analysis of urinary calculi and other literature data.  相似文献

The cubic phase structure of 4'-n-hexadecyloxy-3'-cyanobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ACBC-16) was examined by X-ray diffraction. Unlike the octadecyloxy homologue showing an Im3m-type cubic phase, the cubic phase of ACBC-16 was of Ia3d type, both on heating and on cooling, similarly to the corresponding nitro-substituted analogue (ANBC-16). The lattice dimension a at 453 K was a = 11.0 nm, 2.5% larger than the value for ANBC-16 and rather close to the value of ANBC-17 or -18. It is expected that the appearance of the cubic phase type, as a function of the number of carbon atoms n in the alkoxy chain in the ACBC-n series, is essentially the same as in the ANBC-n series, but shifted towards shorter n by 1 or 2. In the latter ANBC-n series, the cubic phase type is Ia3d for 15≤n≤18, while an Im3m type is formed for 19≤n≤21, both on heating and on cooling.  相似文献

Three lanthanide “ate” complexes L2YbM(THF)n supported by amine bis(phenolate) ligand [L=Me2NCH2CH2N{CH2-(2-O-C6H2-But2-2,4)}2; M=Li, n=2 (1); M=Na, n=2 (2); M=K, n=3 (3)] were synthesized by the metathesis reactions of LM2 with anhydrous YbCl3 in 2:1 molar ratio in high yield. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The influence of the alkali metal ions on the molecular structure of these lanthanide complexes has been elucidated.  相似文献

Beech sawdust (S) and samples containing 1% of H3PO4 (SP), (NaPO3)n (PS), P2O5 (POS), NaOH/P2O5 (SPS), NaOH (SS) or Na2CO3 (CS) were analysed using dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetry (TG) in nitrogen and oxygen environments. According to the results of dynamic experiments in nitrogen, the thermal resistance at 275 °C decreased in the order: S > SS > CS > SP> SPS > PS > POS, while in oxygen the order was: S > POS > SPS=CS=PS > SP > SS. The difference in residues obtained in nitrogen in comparison to oxygen environment reaches its maximum at temperatures from 300 to 325 °C and according to the decreasing values the following order could be listed: SS (300 °C/27%) > SP (325 °C/25%) > CS (300 °C/24%) > S (325 °C/23%) > SPS (300 °C/19%) > PS (300 °C/11%) > POS (275 °C/4%). This indicates that with a decreasing difference in residues formed in oxidative and inert environments the flame-retardant effect of the sample is increasing. The calculated initial rate constants of residue formation and gasification and the corresponding activation energies of the processes in nitrogen and oxygen from the isothermal experiments gave smaller values of rate constants for SPS than for S. For the SPS sample in comparison with S the activation energy of residue formation in nitrogen decreased while the three remaining values increased. The Er* of PS in the oxygen is the biggest from all studied samples under the conditions used, while SPS gave the biggest Eg* in the oxygen environment. The phosphorus could be washed out with water from SP and SPS, while it remained in PS and POS. These last two samples also have the best flame-retarding properties according to TG analysis.  相似文献

In this paper, the SERS spectra of a series of compounds C6H5(CH2)nCOOH (n = 0, 1, 2) adsorbed on colloidal silver are recorded and compared with each other. The relation between the SERS intensities and the electronic structures of the compounds are discussed. The results support the molecular enhancement mechanism on SERS, especially the charge transfer idea.  相似文献

The behaviour of the anisotropic electrical conductivity of liquid crystal-gold nanoparticle (LC-GNP) composites consisting of a commercially available room temperature nematic compound doped with alkylthiol-capped GNPs has been investigated. The nematic-isotropic transition of the composite decreases nearly linearly with increasing X, the concentration of GNP (in weight %) at a rate of about 1°C /weight %. The inclusion of GNPs increases the electrical conductivity of the system with the value increasing by more than two orders of magnitude for X = 5%. However, the anisotropy in conductivity, defined as the ratio of the conductivity along (σ) and orthogonal (σ) to the director shows a much smaller but definite decrease as X increases.  相似文献
