This study examined the amount of jaw opening used by two groups of singers, those with less than 4 years of training (novice) and those with more than 8 years of training (experienced) in the Western tradition of opera and art song. Movement of the jaw in the superior-inferior plane was measured with the use of a lightweight head-mounted cephalostat with a strain gauge. The subjects spoke and then sung a carrier phrase "I say b(v)p," where (v) was each of three vowels, [a], [i], and [u]. The phrase was first spoken with a natural inflection and then sung on a repeated pitch at three notes from the low, medium, and high singing voice range. There was no statistically significant difference in jaw opening between the two groups of singers. Vowel was significant for jaw opening in both groups, with [a] being produced with more jaw opening than [i] or [u]. The voicing condition was also significant for jaw opening with greater jaw opening being used as pitch increased. In general the amount of jaw opening was smallest for the low singing voice condition and greatest for the high singing voice condition. The jaw opening most typically was less in the low voice condition than in the speech condition and then increased for both the medium and high voice tasks. All but two singers used more jaw opening on the [a] vowel than the other two vowels at all voicing conditions.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to test the hypothesis that intrinsic laryngeal muscles are involved in producing voice fundamental frequency (F(0)) responses to perturbations in voice pitch auditory feedback. Electromyography (EMG) recordings of the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles were made with hooked-wire electrodes, while subjects sustained vowel phonations at three different voice F(0) levels (conversational, high pitch in head register, and falsetto register) and received randomized pitch shifts (±100 or ±300 cents) in their voice auditory feedback. The median latencies from stimulus onset to the peak in the EMG and voice F(0) responses were 167 and 224 ms, respectively. Among the three different F(0) levels, the falsetto register produced compensatory EMG responses that occurred prior to vocal responses and increased along with rising voice F(0) responses and decreased for falling F(0) responses. For the conversational and high voice levels, the EMG response timing was more variable than in the falsetto voice, and changes in EMG activity with relevance to the vocal responses did not follow the consistent trend observed in the falsetto condition. The data from the falsetto condition suggest that both the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles are involved in generating the compensatory vocal responses to pitch-shifted voice feedback.  相似文献

Measurements on the inverse filtered airflow waveform and of estimated average transglottal pressure and glottal airflow were made from syllable sequences in low, normal, and high pitch for 25 male and 20 female speakers. Correlation analyses indicated that several of the airflow measurements were more directly related to voice intensity than to fundamental frequency (F0). Results suggested that pressure may have different influences in low and high pitch in this speech task. It is suggested that unexpected results of increased pressure in low pitch were related to maintaining voice quality, that is, avoiding vocal fry. In high pitch, the increased pressure may serve to maintain vocal fold vibration. The findings suggested different underlying laryngeal mechanisms and vocal adjustments for increasing and decreasing F0 from normal pitch.  相似文献

We investigated the laryngeal closure pressure during sustained phonation in five healthy adult men with no pathological lesions in the glottis using a round pressure transducer with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. The transducer was placed between the vocal processes through the mouth. Subjects were asked to utter a sustained phonation of the vowel sound /eh/ at varying pitch and intensity in modal register. The laryngeal closure pressure ranged from 0 to 200 cmH2O. At a comfortable pitch and intensity, the pressure was below 50 cmH2O. The pressure was correlated with pitch, but not with intensity.  相似文献

Phonation threshold pressure (PTP), effort for speaking, and vibratory closure pattern were assessed in 4 women with normal untrained voices after 2 hours of loud reading. PTP generally increased after this vocally fatiguing task at conversational pitch and 10%, 50%, and especially 80% of the pitch range. Increased systemic hydration by drinking water appeared to attenuate and/or delay the elevation of PTP for 3 subjects, at least at the highest pitch tested. Effort for speaking increased consistently throughout the loud reading task and subsequently decreased after 15 minutes of vocal silence. Upon videostroboscopic examination of the larynx, 3 subjects demonstrated spindle-shaped vibratory closure patterns on occasion after loud reading. The results provide preliminary support for increasing water consumption to reduce or delay some vocal-function changes after prolonged loud phonation in untrained speakers.  相似文献

Glottal incompetence is a common laryngeal disorder causing impaired swallowing and phonation. The resultant voice has been characterized as weak and breathy with a restricted pitch range. Currently, medialization thyroplasty and arytenoid adduction are two of the surgical treatments for patients with glottal incompetence. However, few studies have evaluated the changes in objective measures of speech with type I thyroplasty and arytenoid adduction. In this study, 59 patients with glottal incompetence underwent either type I thyroplasty or arytenoid adduction. Acoustic (jitter, shimmer, and harmonics-to-noise ratio) and aerodynamic (airflow, subglottic pressure, and glottal resistance) measures were obtained both pre- and postoperatively. No significant differences were found among acoustic or aerodynamic measures for operation type. However, a significant pre/postsurgery effect was observed for translaryngeal airflow. In addition, no significant differences were found among the measures for patients with traditional compared with nontraditional operative indications. Patients who developed glottal insufficiency due to previous laryngeal surgery (e.g., vocal fold stripping) demonstrated no statistically significant improvement in acoustic or aerodynamic measures following thyroplasty or arytenoid adduction.  相似文献

Pressure in the laryngeal ventricle was measured with a beveled needle connected to a pressure transducer in excised canine larynges. Air pressures within the ventricle were obtained for different adduction levels of the true vocal folds (TVFs), false vocal folds (FVFs), and subglottal pressures (Ps). Results indicated that the air pressures in the ventricle appear to be strongly related to the motion of the FVFs rather than to the effects of TVF vibration. Both dc and ac pressures depend on FVF adduction, amplitude of motion of the FVFs, and whether the FVFs touch each other during the vibratory cycle. Mean and peak-to-peak pressures in the ventricle were as high as 65% of the mean and peak-to-peak Ps, respectively, when the FVFs vibrated with large amplitude and contact each cycle. If the glottis was not closed, a medial movement of the FVFs appeared to create a positive pressure pulse on the Ps signal due to an increase in the laryngeal flow resistance. The electroglottograph signal showed evidence of tissue contact for both the TVFs and the FVFs. The study suggests that the laryngeal ventricle acts as a relatively independent aero-acoustic chamber that depends primarily upon the motion of the FVFs.  相似文献

Inspiratory phonation (IP) is the production of voice as air is taken into the lungs. Although IP is promoted as a laryngeal assessment and voice treatment technique, it has been described quantitatively in very few speakers. This study quantified changes in laryngeal adduction, fundamental frequency, and intensity during IP relative to expiratory phonation (EP). We hypothesized that IP would increase laryngeal abduction and fundamental frequency. The experiment was a within-subjects, repeated measures design with each subject serving as her own control. Participants were 10 females (ages 19-50 years) who underwent simultaneous transoral videostrobolaryngoscopy and acoustic voice recording. We found that membranous vocal fold contact decreased significantly during IP relative to EP, while the trends for change of ventricular fold squeeze during IP varied across individuals. Vocal fundamental frequency increased significantly during IP relative to EP, but intensity did not vary consistently across conditions. Without teaching or coaching, changes that occurred during IP did not carry over to EP produced immediately following IP within the same respiratory cycle.  相似文献

Well-known multimass models of vocal folds are useful to describe main behavior observed in human voicing but their principle of functioning, based on harmonic oscillation, may appear complex. This work is designed to show that a simple one-mass model ruled by laws of relaxation oscillation can also depict main behavior of glottis dynamic. Theory of relaxation oscillation is detailed. A relaxation oscillation model is assessed through a numerical simulation using conventional values for tissue characteristics and subglottal pressure. As expected, raising the mass decreases the fundamental frequency and increases the amplitude of vocal fold vibration: for a mass ranging from 0.01 to 0.4 g, F0 decreased from 297.5 to 42.5 Hz and vibrational amplitude increased from 1.26 to 3.25 mm (for stiffness k=10Nm(-1), damping r=0.015 N s m(-1), and subglottal pressure=1 kPa). Stiffness value has the opposite effect. The subglottal pressure controls the fundamental frequency with a rate ranging from 20 to 50 Hz/kPa. The vibrational amplitude is also controlled linearly by subglottal pressure from 0.22 to 0.26 mm/kPa. The range of phonation threshold pressure (PTP) is close to the values currently proposed, that is, 0.1 to 1 kPa and varies with the fundamental frequency. The relaxation oscillator is a simple and useful tool for modeling vocal fold vibration.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship among the magnitude of jaw opening, intrinsic fundamental frequency (F0), and glottal parameters in natural speech. Acoustic, jaw opening, and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were simultaneously recorded. The subjects were 10 healthy men with New Zealand English as their native language. Subjects were asked to repeat a standard nonemphasized sentence in which one of the target vowels (/a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/) was embedded in various contexts. The glottal parameters F0, open quotient (OQ), and speed quotient (SQ) were measured from the EGG signal. Results of a series of one-way repeated-measures analyses of variance (ANOVA) showed a significant vowel effect on the magnitude of jaw opening [F(4, 24) = 25.512, P < .001], F0 [F(4, 28) = 45.415, P < .001] and speed quotient [F(4, 28) = 5.233, P = .003], but not on the open quotient [F(4, 28) = 0.501, P = .735]. The magnitude of jaw opening was found to be inversely related with F0 (r = -0.624, n = 25, P = .0009). These findings showed that the magnitude of jaw opening was related to F0 and that jaw opening might be a control signal for simulation of long-term F0 variation to achieve a higher degree of naturalness in artificial voice.  相似文献

Acoustic, glottographic, and videolaryngoscopic analyses were made of trillo, a vocal ornament described as the rapid repetition of a single note. This vocal gesture, performed by a trained singer, was studied for variations in laryngeal adduction, fundamental frequency, and acoustic amplitude characteristics. Results suggested that trillo was produced with alternating abduction/adduction of the vocal folds, and fundamental frequency tended to be lower during the relatively more abducted portions of the utterance.  相似文献

The high soprano range was investigated by acoustic and electroglottographic measurements of 12 sopranos and high-speed endoscopy of one of these. A single laryngeal transition was observed on glissandi above the primo passaggio. It supports the existence of two distinct laryngeal mechanisms in the high soprano range: M2 and M3, underlying head and whistle registers. The laryngeal transition occurred gradually over several tones within the interval D#5-D6. It occurred over a wider range and was completed at a higher pitch for trained than untrained sopranos. The upper limit of the laryngeal transition during glissandi was accompanied by pitch jumps or instabilities, but, for most singers, it did not coincide with the upper limit of R1:f(0) tuning (i.e., tuning the first resonance to the fundamental frequency). However, pitch jumps could also be associated with changes in resonance tuning. Four singers demonstrated an overlap range over which they could sing with a full head or fluty resonant quality. Glottal behaviors underlying these two qualities were similar to the M2 and M3 mechanisms respectively. Pitch jumps and discontinuous glottal and spectral changes characteristic of a M2-M3 laryngeal transition were observed on decrescendi produced within this overlap range.  相似文献

Phonation threshold pressure has been defined as the minimum subglottalpressure to generate phonation. Previous research has indicated that children may habitually employ higher subglottal pressures than adults. In the present investigation sound pressure level (SPL) and subglottal pressures at different pitch levels were measured at and above phonation threshold in nine children. Phonation threshold values were scattered in reasonable agreement with Titzes' prediction, although a discrepancy was noted regarding the frequency dependence in some voices. At normal conversational loudness and loudest level of phonation the children's PS values were between two to four and four to eight times the predicted threshold values, respectively. At normal conversational loudness and habitual pitch subglottal pressures were lower than those previously observed for children, but similar to those found for female adults. The SPL in softest and loudest phonation were somewhat lower as compared to previous phonetogram data for children and for female adults. At normal loudness and habitual pitch the SPL values were similar to those of female adults. For a doubling of Ps mean SPL increased by 10.5 dB on the average.  相似文献

Essential voice tremor (EVT) is a voice disorder resulting from dyscoordination within the laryngeal musculature. A low-frequency fluctuations of fundamental voice frequency or the strength of excitation amplitude is the main consequence of the disorder. The automatic classification of healthy control and EVT is useful tool for the clinicians. A typical automatic EVT classification involves three steps. The first step is to compute the pitch contour from the speech. The second step is to compute the features from the pitch contour, and the final step is to use a classifier to classify the features into healthy or EVT. It is shown that a high-resolution pitch contour estimated from the glottal closure instants (GCIs) is useful for EVT classification. The HPRC estimation can be very poor in the presence of noise. Hence, a probabilistic source filter model based noise robust GCI detection is used for HPRC estimation. The Empirical mode decomposition based feature extraction is used followed by a support vector machine classifier. The EVT classification performance is evaluated using recordings from 45 subjects. The proposed method is found to perform better than the baseline techniques in eight different additive noise conditions with six SNR levels.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine changes in glottal configuration in women under a variety of pitch and loudness conditions after an interval of loud reading. Twelve young adult women with normal laryngeal structures were photographed under stroboscopic light and sustained the vowel /i/ for a minimum of 3 s, at three pitch levels and three loudness levels, before and after a 15-min interval of loud reading. Results indicate that female speakers tend to alter glottic configurations across phonatory conditions after loud reading, particularly during high-pitch phonation. Specifically, five subjects tended to increase glottal closure, one tended to increase glottal opening, two tended to maintain the identical configuration, and four demonstrated no consistent pattern of response.  相似文献

Subglottal pressure is one of the main voice control factors, controlling vocal loudness. In this investigation the effects of subglottal pressure variation on the voice source in untrained female and male voices phonating at a low, a middle, and a high fundamental frequency are analyzed. The subjects produced a series of /pae/ syllables at varied degrees of vocal loudness, attempting to keep pitch constant. Subglottal pressure was estimated from the oral pressure during the /p/ occlusion. Ten subglottal pressure values, approximately equidistantly spaced within the pressure range used, were identified, and the voice source of the vowels following these pressure values was analyzed by inverse filtering the airflow signal as captured by a Rothenberg mask. The maximum flow declination rate (MFDR) was found to increase linearly with subglottal pressure, but a given subglottal pressure produced lower values for female than for male voices. The closed quotient increased quickly with subglottal pressure at low pressures and slowly at high pressures, such that the relationship can be approximated by a power function. For a given subglottal pressure value, female voices reached lower values of closed quotient than male voices.  相似文献

Acoustic and glottographic measures may provide important information that could enhance clinical management and documentation of vocal dysfunction. Acoustic measures such as jitter and shimmer reflect “short-term” perturbations, or instabilities of the voice, and the coefficients of variation for frequency and for amplitude reflect “long-term” perturbations. Interpretations of these acoustic measures are based on the assumption that vocal perturbations may be related to laryngeal tissue abnormalities, asymmetries in vocal fold movement, or neuromuscular fluctuations in the respiratory, laryngeal, or vocal tract systems. The abduction quotient is a glottographic measure related to laryngeal adduction and is obtained from an analysis of the electroglottograph signal. The adduction measure appears to be independent of the acoustic perturbation measures. Interpretations of the acoustic and adductory measures may, therefore, complement each other for greater understanding of a patient's laryngeal behavior. Visual displays of the acoustic and glottographic signals also are discussed to demonstrate their value in voice signal interpretations. Case studies illustrate potential interpretations of the acoustic perturbation and abduction quotient measures.  相似文献

Changes in mean fundamental frequency accompanying changes in loudness of phonation are analyzed in 9 professional singers, 9 nonsingers, and 10 male and 10 female patients suffering from vocal functional dysfunction. The subjects read discursive texts with noise in earphones, and some also at voluntarily varied vocal loudness. The healthy subjects phonated as softly and as loudly as possible at various fundamental frequencies throughout their pitch ranges, and the resulting mean phonetograms are compared. Mean pitch was found to increase by about half-semitones per decibel sound level. Grossly, the subject groups gave similar results, although the singers changed voice pitch more than the nonsingers. The voice pitch changes may be explained as passive results of changes of subglottal pressure required for the sound level variation.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of prolonged loud reading, intended to induce fatigue, on vocal function in adults with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). Subjects were 20 adults, 37–60 years old, with UVFP secondary to recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis. Subjective ratings and instrumental measures of vocal function were obtained before and after reading. Statistical analysis revealed subjects rated their vocal quality and physical effort for voicing more severely following prolonged loud reading, whereas expert raters did not detect a significant perceptual difference in vocal quality. Reading fundamental frequency (Fo) was significantly increased following prolonged loud reading, as were mean airflow rates at all pitch conditions. Maximum phonation times for comfort and low pitches significantly decreased during posttests. Multiple regression analyses revealed significant associations between ratings of posttest physical effort and select posttest measures. Interpretation of results indicates the prolonged loud reading task was successful in vocally fatiguing most of the UVFP subjects. Key physiologic correlates of vocal fatigue, in individuals with UVFP, include further reduction of glottic efficiency, resulting in decreased regulation of glottic airflow and a temporary destabilization of speaking fundamental frequency.  相似文献
