Experiments have been conducted in a low speed horizontal wind tunnel to study the interaction of radiation and conduction on mixed convective heat transfer from an upward facing horizontal flat plate in air. Differential interferometer has been used to measure local convective heat fluxes. It has been observed that interaction between surface radiation and convection is significant for a low thermal conductivity plate material. On the basis of the previous and current studies, it can be stated that the multi-mode interaction problem is an outcome of the nature of convective boundary layer. The interaction between different modes of heat transfer would remain similar irrespective of the nature of convection (free/mixed or forced).  相似文献

This paper studies combined heat and mass transfer by laminar natural convection from a vertical plate maintained with uniform surface heat flux and species concentration. Very accurate finite-difference solutions of a set of nonsimilarity equations have been obtained for most practical gaseous solutions (Pr?=?0.7, 0.21 ≤ Sc ≤ 2.1) and aqueous solutions (Pr?=?7, 140 ≤ Sc ≤ 1400). Variations of heat and mass transfer rates with buoyancy ratio and Lewis number are presented. Precise correlations have been developed for predicting heat and mass transfer rates of natural convection arising from single (solutal or thermal) buoyancy force and dual buoyancy forces.  相似文献

This article considers the problem of mixed convection stagnation-point flow towards a vertical plate embedded in a porous medium with prescribed surface heat flux. It is assumed that the free stream velocity and the surface heat flux vary linearly from the stagnation point. Using a similarity transformation, the governing system of partial differential equations is transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically by a finite-difference method. The features of the flow and the heat transfer characteristics are analyzed and discussed. It is found that dual solutions exist for both buoyancy assisting and opposing flows.  相似文献

The effect of lateral mass flux on mixed convection heat and mass transfer in a saturated porous medium adjacent to an inclined permeable surface is analyzed. A similarity solution is obtained when surface temperature and concentration, free stream velocity and injection/suction velocity of fluid are prescribed as power functions of distance from the leading edge. The cases when the flow and buoyancy forces are in the same and opposite directions are discussed both for aiding and opposing buoyancy effects. The governing parameters are the mixed convection parameter Gr, the Lewis number Le, the buoyancy ratio N, the lateral mass flux parameter f w, representing the effects of injection or withdrawal of fluid at the wall, and λ which specifies three cases of the inclined plate. The interactive effect of these parameters on heat and mass transfer rates are presented. It is observed that the diffusion ratio (Le) has a more pronounced effect on concentration field than on flow and temperature fields. It is found that the rates of heat and mass transfer increase with suction and decrease with injection of the fluid. Received on 31 August 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

The steady laminar boundary layer flow along a flat plate is studied taking into account the variation of fluid viscosity and fluid Prandtl number with temperature. In the forced convection case the plate moves with constant velocity and its temperature varies in power law with x. In the mixed convection case the plate temperature is constant and the fluid moves upwards due to an external free stream and due to buoyancy forces. The results are obtained with the direct numerical solution of the boundary layer equations. The study concerns the wall heat transfer, the wall shear stress and velocity and temperature profiles across the boundary layer. The results of the present work are different from those existing in the literature, which have been obtained with the assumption of constant Pr number.  相似文献

The free convection flow along a vertical porous plate with transverse sinusoidal suction velocity distribution is investigated. Due to this type of suction velocity at the plate the flow becomes three dimensional one. For the asymptotic flow condition, the wall shear stress in the direction of main flow for different values of buoyancy parameter G is obtained. For G=0, the skin friction in the direction of free stream and the rate of heat transfer from the plate to the fluid are given. It is found that these results differ from those obtained by Gersten and Gross.  相似文献

The effect of thermal radiation on the non-Darcy mixed convection flow over a non-isothermal horizontal surface immersed in a saturated porous medium has been studied. The wall temperature is assumed to have a power-law variation with the distance measured from the leading edge of the plate. The non-linear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using a finite-difference scheme. For some particular cases, the self-similar solution has also been obtained. The heat transfer is found to be strongly influenced by the radiative flux number, buoyancy parameter, variation of wall temperature, non-Darcy parameter and the nature of the free stream velocity.  相似文献

Assisting and opposing flows in a mixed convection boundary layer flow over an isothermal vertical plate are studied for the case of variable physical properties and uniform free stream. Fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity are assumed to be linear functions of temperature. Using local similarity the flow and heat transfer quantities are found to be functions of four parameters, i.e. Richardson number, Prandtl number, a viscosity variation parameter and a thermal conductivity variation parameter. Numerical solutions are obtained by two methods, a shooting technique and Nachtsheim-Swigert technique, for selected values of parameters appropriate for the fluids considered and specific temperatures of the plate and ambient fluid. For assisting flows, there exist solutions for all values of Richardson number while for opposing flows solutions exist only for a finite set of its values and, in addition, there also exist dual solutions. Important flow and heat transfer quantities of practical interest are determined and the influence of different parameters is discussed.  相似文献

A nonsimilar boundary layer analysis is presented for the problem of mixed convection in power-law type non-Newtonian fluids along a vertical plate with power-law surface heat flux distribution. The mixed convection regime is divided into two regions, namely, the forced convection dominated regime and the free convection dominated regime. The two solutions are matched. Numerical results are presented for the details of the velocity and temperature fields. A discussion is provided for the effect of viscosity index on the surface heat transfer rate. Unsteady flow and heat transfer from a horizontal isothermal square cylinder is studied numerically using a three-dimensional computational model to investigate the influence of buoyancy on the forced flow and heat transfer characteristics. The numerical model is based on a horizontal square cylinder subjected to laminar fluid flow in an unconfined channel. The governing equations in 3D form are solved using a fractional step method based on the finite difference discretization in addition to a Crank–Nicholson scheme employed to the convective and the viscous terms. Two working fluids–air (Pr = 0.7) and water (Pr = 7)–are considered, and the flow and heat transfer simulations were carried out for the Reynolds and Richardson numbers in the intervals 55 ≤ Re ≤ 250 and 0 ≤ Ri ≤ 2, respectively. The flow characteristics such as time-averaged drag/lift, rms drag/rms lift coefficients as well as Strouhal number were computed. The heat transfer from the cylinder is assessed by mean Nusselt number (and rms Nusselt number) over the total heated cylinder walls. As the buoyancy increases, the mass and the velocity of the fluid flowing underneath the cylinder increases. The fluid is injected into the near wake region with an upward motion which significantly alters the flow field in the downstream as well as upstream regions. The effects of Reynolds, Richardson and Prandtl numbers on the flow field and temperature distributions are discussed in detail. It is shown that the flow and heat transfer characteristics are influenced more for air than water. To fill the void in the literature, useful empirical correlations of practical importance are derived for pure forced and pure natural as well as mixed convection. The mixed convection correlations, in terms of the ratio of pure forced convection, are also developed, and their implications are discussed.  相似文献

In this note, the evaporation rate from a vertical wet fabric sheet is calculated using a free convection heat transfer correlation. Chilton–Colburn analogy is used to derive a mass transfer correlation from a heat transfer correlation proposed by Churchill and Chu for free convection from a vertical isothermal plate. The mass transfer rate obtained from this expression has shown excellent agreement with experimental data.  相似文献

The mixed convection heat transfer of upward molten salt flow in a vertical annular duct is experimentally and numerically studied. The heat transfer performances of mixed convection are measured under Reynolds number 2,500–12,000 and inlet temperature 300–400 °C, and Nusselt number of molten salt flow with cooled inner wall monotonically increases with buoyancy number. The mixed convection is further simulated by low-Reynolds number k-ε model and variable properties, and the heat transfer tendency from numerical results agrees with that from experiments. At low Reynolds number, the natural convection plays more important role in the mixed convection. As the buoyancy number rises, the thickness of flow boundary layer near the inner wall increases, while the effective thermal conductivity remarkably rises, so the enhanced heat transfer of mixed convection is mainly affected by the effective thermal conductivity due to turbulent diffusion.  相似文献

Unsteady laminar mixed convection flow (combined free and forced convection flow) along a vertical slender cylinder embedded in a porous medium under the combined buoyancy effect of thermal and species diffusion has been studied. The effect of the permeability of the medium as well as the magnetic field has been included in the analysis. The partial differential equations with three independent variables governing the flow have been solved numerically using a implicit finite difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. Computations have been carried out for accelerating, decelerating and oscillatory free stream velocity distributions. The effects of the permeability of the medium, buoyancy forces, transverse curvature and magnetic field on skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer have been studied. It is found that the effect of free stream velocity distribution is more pronounced on the skin friction than on the heat and mass transfer. The permeability and magnetic parameters increase the skin friction, but reduce the heat and mass transfer. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer are enhanced due to the buoyancy forces and curvature parameter. The heat transfer is strongly dependent on the viscous dissipation parameter and the Prandtl number, and the mass transfer on the Schmidt number.  相似文献

The problem of turbulent free convection heat transfer from curved surfaces to non-Newtonian power-law fluids has been investigated using the Nakayama-Koyama solution methodology. The scheme is designed to deal with bodies of arbitrary geometric configurations and hence can be viewed as a generalized version of the Shenoy-Mashelkar approach for turbulent free convection heat transfer from a flat vertical plate to a power-law fluid. The surface wall temperature is allowed to vary in the streamwise direction in an arbitrary fashion, and calculations are carried out for the turbulent free convection about the horizontal circular cylinder and sphere for illustrative purposes. Available theoretical and experimental data have been compared with the predictions of the present analysis and the comparison of results has been found to be reasonably good.  相似文献

A theoretical analysis has been proposed for the forced convection heat transfer from external surfaces immersed in non-Newtonian fluids of the power-law model. The integral treatment previously introduced for Newtonian fluids has been successfully extended to the non-Newtonian fluids over a flat plate and a wedge of an arbitrary included angle. The integral momentum and energy equations are transformed into a pair of characteristic equations, which can readily be solved for the velocity shape factor and the boundary layer thickness ratio, once the exponents in the expressions for the power-law model, free stream velocity and wall temperature variation are specified. It has been also found that an asymptotic expression derived under the assumption of large Prandtl number, is valid practically for all power-law fluids, and hence, can be used for a speedy, and yet accurate estimation of the local heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids.  相似文献

A validated computer simulation model has been developed for the analysis of colinear spheres in a heated gas stream. Using the Galerkin finite element method, the steady-state Navier-Stokes and heat transfer equations have been solved describing laminar axisymmetric thermal flow past closely-spaced monodisperse spheres with fluid injection. Of interest are the coupled nonlinear interaction effects on the temperature fields and ultimately on the Nusselt number of each sphere for different free stream Reynolds numbers (20 ≤Re ≤ 200) and intersphere distances (1.5 ≤d ij ≤ 6.0) in the presence of surface blowing (0 ≤v b < 0.1). Fluid injection (i.e. blowing) and associated wake effects generate lower average heat transfer coefficients for each interacting sphere when the Reynolds number increases (Re>100). Heat transfer is also reduced at small spacings especially for the second and third sphere. A Nusselt number correlation for each interacting (porous) sphere has been developed based on computer experiments.  相似文献

A boundary layer analysis is used to investigate the heat and mass transfer characteristics of mixed convection about a vertical flat plate embedded in a saturated porous medium under the coupled effects of thermal and mass diffusion. The plate is maintained at prescribed surface temperature/concentration (PST/PSC) or prescribed heat/mass flux (PHF/PMF). The nonsimilar governing equations are obtained by using a suitable transformation and solved by Keller box method. Numerical results for the local heat transfer rate and the local mass transfer rate are presented for various parameters. The local heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing n and m and buoyancy parameter ξ. When buoyancy parameter ξ is very small (large) the value of local Nusselt and the local Sherwood number correspond with the pure forced (free) convection, respectively. Increasing buoyancy ratio N (or N *) increases the local heat and mass transfer rates. It is apparent that Lewis number has a pronounced effect on the local mass transfer rate than it does on the local heat transfer rate. Furthermore, increasing Lewis number decreases (increases) the local heat (mass) transfer rate. Received on 8 December 1997  相似文献

The problem of mixed convection around a liquid sphere that experiences a rotation about its axis parallel to the free stream is studied numerically using a finite- difference technique. The coupled boundary-layer energy and momentum equations are numerically solved over a wide range of Grashof number that represents the cases of aiding and opposing free convection and for wide range of the spin parameter Ta/Re2. The surface of the sphere also rotates as a result of the shear stress exerted from the external flow of air. The effect of both parameters on the velocity components as well as the temperature within the thermal boundary-layer is presented. Results show that increasing the aiding free convection and the spin parameter cause increases in the shear stress and the local heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

Boundary layer approximation is applied for mixed convection about a horizontal flat plate in a saturated porous medium with aiding external flows. Similarity solutions are obtained, incorporating the variation of permeabilty, for 1) horizontal flat plate at zero angle of attack with constant heat flux; 2) stagnation point flows about horizontal flat plates with wall temperature varying asT wx 2. The temperature and velocity profiles for different values of Ra/(RePr)3/2 and the parameters governing the flow are obtained. The heat transfer rate is calculated and its implications in a geothermal application is discussed. Further, the criteria for pure mixed convection about horizontal flat plates in a porous media are established.  相似文献

This paper reports the findings of experimental studies on combined free and forced convection through a plain square duct in laminar region. The test fluid flows through an inner square duct, hot water at high flow rate circulated through a annular channel formed between square duct and circular tube, in counter current fashion to attain a nearly uniform wall temperature conditions. The importance of mixed convection is judged by the value of the Richardson number (Ri). It was observed that at low Reynolds number, heat transfer was mainly governed by mixed convection. However at higher values of Reynolds number, heat transfer was significantly dominated by forced convection. It was found that Reynolds number higher than 1050 for water and 480 for ethylene glycol resulted in laminar forced convention heat transfer. The empirical correlation developed for Nusselt number in terms of Grashoff number and Graez number, was found to fit with experimental Nusselt number within ±11 and ±12?% for water and ethylene glycol respectively.  相似文献
