In the paper, the set of exponents of exponential growth (growth exponents) for a finitely generated group with respect to all possible generators of this group is studied. It is proved that the greatest lower bound of this set is attained for the free products of a cyclic group of prime order and a free group of finite rank.  相似文献

Abstract

We prove that when a countable group admits a nontrivial Floyd-type boundary, then every nonelementary and metrically proper subgroup contains a noncommutative free subgroup. This generalizes the corresponding well-known results for hyperbolic groups and groups with infinitely many ends. It also shows that no finitely generated amenable group admits a nontrivial boundary of this type. This improves on a theorem by Floyd (Floyd, W. J. (1980). Group completions and limit sets of Kleinian groups. Invent. Math. 57: 205–218) as well as giving an elementary proof of a conjecture stated in that same paper. We also show that if the Floyd boundary of a finitely generated group is nontrivial, then it is a boundary in the sense of Furstenberg and the group acts on it as a convergence group.  相似文献

A theorem of E.C. Turner states that if F is a finitely generated free group, then the test words are precisely the elements not contained in any proper retract. In this paper, we examine some ideas in model theory and logic related to Turner’s characterization of test words and introduce Turner groups, a class of groups containing all finite groups and all stably hyperbolic groups satisfying this characterization. We show that Turner’s theorem is not first-order expressible. However, we prove that every finitely generated elementary free group is a Turner group.  相似文献

We show that every nontrivial free product, different from the infinite dihedral group, is growth tight with respect to any algebraic distance: that is, its exponential growth rate is strictly greater than the corresponding growth rate of any of its proper quotients. A similar property holds for the amalgamated product of residually finite groups over a finite subgroup. As a consequence, we provide examples of finitely generated groups of uniform exponential growth whose minimal growth is not realized by any generating set.  相似文献

A discrete group G is amenable if there exists a finitely additive probability measure on G which is invariant under left translations and is defined on all subsets of G. It is proved that if the group is generated by two elements and is amenable then there are words being relators whose most of the consecutive pairs of the letters belong to a certain four-element set of pairs. This fact is applied to reproving non-amenability of a braid group. The same group provides an example showing that such type of condition is not su?cient for amenabilty.  相似文献

We show that the subconstruct Fing of Prtop, consisting of all finitely generated pretopological spaces, is the largest Cartesian closed coreflective subconstruct of Prtop. This implies that in any coreflective subconstruct of Prtop, exponential objects are finitely generated. Moreover, in any finitely productive, coreflective subconstruct, exponential objects are precisely those objects of the subconstruct that are finitely generated. We give a counterexample showing that without finite productivity the previous result does not hold.  相似文献

We give a formula relating the L 2-isoperimetric profile to the spectral distribution of a Laplace operator on a finitely generated group Γ. We prove the asymptotic stability of the spectral distribution under changes of measures with finite second moment. As a consequence, we can apply techniques from geometric group theory to estimate the spectral distribution of the Laplace operator in terms of the growth and the Følner’s function of the group. This leads to upper bounds on spectral distributions of some non-solvable amenable groups and to sharp estimates of the spectral distributions of some solvable groups with exponential growth.  相似文献

Let Mod(S) denote the mapping class group of a compact, orientable surface S. We prove that finitely generated subgroups of Mod(S) which are not virtually abelian have uniform exponential growth with minimal growth rate bounded below by a constant depending only, and necessarily, on S. For the proof, we find in any such subgroup explicit free group generators which are “short” in any word metric. Besides bounding growth, this allows a bound on the return probability of simple random walks.  相似文献

We study random walk on topological full groups of subshifts, and show the existence of infinite, finitely generated, simple groups with the Liouville property. Results by Matui and Juschenko-Monod have shown that the derived subgroups of topological full groups of minimal subshifts provide the first examples of finitely generated, simple amenable groups. We show that if the (not necessarily minimal) subshift has a complexity function that grows slowly enough (e.g. linearly), then every symmetric and finitely supported probability measure on the topological full group has trivial Poisson–Furstenberg boundary. We also get explicit upper bounds for the growth of Følner sets.  相似文献

We prove that fully residually free groups have the Howson property, that is the intersection of any two finitely generated subgroups in such a group is again finitely generated. We also establish some commensurability properties for finitely generated fully residually free groups which are similar to those of free groups. Finally we prove that for a finitely generated fully residually free group the membership problem is solvable with respect to any finitely generated subgroup.

We introduce a method to estimate the entropy of random walks on groups. We apply this method to exhibit the existence of compact manifolds with amenable fundamental groups such that the universal cover is not Liouville. We also use the criterion to prove that a finitely generated solvable group admits a symmetric measure with non-trivial Poisson boundary if and only if this group is not virtually nilpotent. This, in particular, shows that any polycyclic group admits a symmetric measure such that its boundary does not readily interprete in terms of the ambient Lie group. As another application we get a series of examples of amenable groups such that any finite entropy non-degenerate measure on them has non-trivial Poisson boundary. Since the groups in question are amenable, they do admit measures such that the corresponding random walks have trivial boundary; the above shows that such measures on these groups have infinite entropy. We describe elementary examples of finitely presented sofic groups which are not residually amenable (and thus not initially subamenable or LEA, for short). We ask if an amalgam of two amenable groups over a finite subgroup is residually amenable and answer this positively for some special cases, including countable locally finite groups, residually nilpotent groups and others.  相似文献

We investigate how coarse embeddability of box spaces into Hilbert space behaves under group extensions. In particular, we prove a result which implies that a semidirect product of a finitely generated free group by a finitely generated residually finite amenable group has a box space which coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This provides a new class of examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have property A, generalising the example of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula.  相似文献

For a fundamental group of a compact orientable manifold, a condition is specified that is sufficient to guarantee the presence of a “virtual” epimorphism onto a free non-Abelian group. A consequence is deriving a strong Tits alternative. An arbitrary noncompact finitely generated discrete subgroup in PO(3, 1) either is large or is virtually Abelian. An application is provided to the problem of uniform exponential growth for lattices in a 3-dimensional hyperbolic space and of growth of Betti numbers for lattices in a hyperbolic n-dimensional space, where n is an odd number.
