The influence of nano‐scale particles on the viscoelastic properties of polymer suspensions is investigated. We have developed a simulation technique for the particle orientation and polymer conformation tensors to study various features of the suspensions. The nano‐particles are modeled as thin rigid oblate spheroid particles and the polymers as FENE‐P type viscoelastic and Newtonian fluid. Both interparticle and polymer‐particle interactions have been taken into account in our numerical computations. The nonlinear viscoelastic properties of nanocomposites of layered silicate particles in non‐Newtonian fluids are examined at the start‐up of shear flow and are interpreted using the model to examine the effects of model parameters as well as flow conditions on particle orientation, viscosity, and first normal stress difference of the suspensions. We have studied the microstructure of polymer‐clay nanocomposites using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The rheology of these nanocomposites in step‐shear is shown to be fairly well predicted by the model. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 2003–2011, 2010  相似文献

For a more complete understanding of the toughening mechanism of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene‐propylene‐diene rubber (EPDM) blends, dynamic packing injection molding was used to control the phase morphology and rubber particle orientation in the matrix. The relative impact strength of the blends increased at low EPDM contents, and then a definite ductile–brittle (D–B) transition was observed when the EPDM content reached 25 wt %, at which point blends should fail in the ductile mode with conventional molding. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the shear‐induced crystal structure, morphology, orientation, and phase separation of the blends. WAXD results showed that the observed D–B transition took place mainly for a constant crystal structure (α form). Also, no remarkable changes in the crystallinity and melting point of PP were observed by DSC. The highly oriented and elongated rubber particles were seen via SEM at high EPDM contents. Our results suggest that Wu's criterion is no longer valid when dispersed rubber particles are elongated and oriented. The possible fracture mechanism is discussed on the basis of the stress concentration in a filler‐dispersed matrix. It can be concluded that not only the interparticle distance but also the stress fields around individual particles play an important role in polymer toughening. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) networks were prepared by tetrafunctionally end‐linking hydroxyl‐terminated chains with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Molecular composites were then prepared by in situ sol–gel reactions on additional TEOS swelled into the networks, resulting in the formation of reinforcing silica fillers within the host elastomers. The amount of filler generated generally increased linearly with an increase in the TEOS swelling ratio, as expected. The silica particles formed were examined by small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Of particular interest were the relationships between particle size and molecular weight Mc of the network chains (mesh sizes), amount of filler introduced, and catalyst concentration. Particle sizes were smallest for the smallest values of Mc, possibly demonstrating constraining effects from the very short network chains. At fixed Mc and filler concentrations, higher catalyst concentrations gave larger particles. Increase in filler concentration generally had little effect on particle size at low and high loadings, but markedly increased sizes at intermediate levels (10–20 wt %), presumably caused by coalescence of the scattering entities into considerably larger aggregates. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polystyrene (PS)/clay nanocomposites were prepared with two different new intercalation organophilic clays, the phosphonium salt (APP) and the ammonium 4‐(4‐adamantylphenoxy)‐1‐butanamine (APB) salts, by emulsion polymerization technique. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were performed to characterize the layered structures of APB‐ and APP‐treated polymer–clay nanocomposites, and both resulted in exfoliated structures. Molecular weights of PS obtained from these nanocomposites are slightly lower than the virgin PS formed under similar polymerization conditions. Coefficient of thermal expansion showed approximately a 44–55% decrease for APB‐ and APP‐intercalated clay nanocomposites relative to the pure PS. Both Tg and thermal decomposition temperature of the PS component in the nanocomposite are higher than the virgin PS, implying that the presence of clay is able to enhance thermal stabilities of the PS. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. MPEG–PCL diblock copolymers consisting of methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG, 750 g/mol) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization. Aqueous solutions of the synthesized diblock copolymers were prepared by dissolving the MPEG–PCL diblock copolymers at concentrations in the range of 0–20 wt %. When the PCL molecular weight was 3000 or greater, the polymer was only partially soluble in water. As the temperature was increased from room temperature, the diblock copolymer solutions showed two phase transitions: a sol‐to‐gel transition and a gel‐to‐sol transition. The sol‐to‐gel phase transition temperature decreased substantially with increasing PCL length. The sol–gel–sol transition with the increase in temperature was confirmed by monitoring the viscosity as a function of temperature. The temperature ranges of the phase transitions measured by the tilting method were in full agreement with those determined from the viscosity measurements. The maximum viscosity of the copolymer solution increased with increasing hydrophobicity of the diblock copolymer and with increasing copolymer concentration. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed that the diblock copolymers exhibited crystalline domains that favored the formation of an aggregated gel because of the tight aggregation and strong packing interactions between PCL blocks. Scanning electron micrographs of the diblock copolymer solutions in the sol state showed interconnected polyhedral pore structures, whereas those of the gel state revealed a fibrillar‐like morphology. Atomic force microscope (AFM) studies of the sol and gel surfaces showed that the sol surface was covered with fine globular particles, whereas the gel surface was covered with particles in micron‐scale irregular islets. These findings are consistent with uniform mixing of the diblock copolymer and water in the sol state, and aggregation of PCL blocks in the gel state. In conclusion, we confirm that the MPEG–PCL diblock copolymer solution exhibited a sol–gel–sol transition as a function of temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polypropylene‐g‐polystyrene (PP‐g‐PS) copolymers with different grafting ratios are used as compatibilizers to control the size of polystyrene (PS) particles at nanometer scale in polypropylene (PP) matrix. Then the PP/PS insulating nanocomposites (containing 10 wt % PS calculated from PS and PP‐g‐PS) are manufactured. With the increase in grafting ratio of PP‐g‐PS, the size of PS particle is reduced and the interfacial adhesion is enhanced. Meanwhile, the dielectric properties, DC breakdown strength and volume resistivity are increased with the decreasing of PS particle size. The spherulite size of PP is decreased and the boundary between crystals and amorphous regions is blurred or even disappears due to the presence of PS nanoparticles. This evolution of PP structure is attributed to the serious entanglements of PP and PS molecular chains. Finally, the correlation between morphological structure and electrical properties is ultimately established based on the in‐depth understanding of the molecular chain movement, crystal structure, and phase morphology. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene (PS) microspheres coated with β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) were fabricated via γ‐ray‐induced emulsion polymerization in a ternary system of styrene/β‐CD/water (St/β‐CD/water). The solid inclusion complex of St and β‐CD particles formed at the St droplets–water interface can stabilize the emulsion as the surfactant. TEM and XPS results showed that β‐CD remains on the surface of PS particles. The average size of the PS particles increases from 186 to 294 nm as the weight ratio of β‐CD to St rises from 5% to 12.5%. The water contact angle (CA) of PS latex film is lower than 90°, and reduces with the β‐CD content even to 36°. Thus, this work provides a new and one‐pot strategy to surface hydrophilic modification on hydrophobic polymer particles with cyclodextrins through radiation emulsion polymerization.  相似文献

Three polystyrene (PS)/clay hybrid systems have been prepared via in situ polymerization of styrene in the presence of unmodified sodium montmorillonite (Na‐MMT) clay, MMT modified with zwitterionic cationic surfactant octadecyldimethyl betaine (C18DMB) and MMT modified with polymerizable cationic surfactant vinylbenzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride (VDAC). X‐ray diffraction and TEM were used to probe mineral layer organization and to expose the morphology of these systems. The PS/Na‐MMT composite was found to exhibit a conventional composite structure consisting of unintercalated micro and nanoclay particles homogeneously dispersed in the PS matrix. The PS/C18DMB‐MMT system exhibited an intercalated layered silicate nanocomposite structure consisting of intercalated tactoids dispersed in the PS matrix. Finally, the PS/VDAC‐MMT system exhibited features of both intercalated and exfoliated nanocomposites. Systematic statistical analysis of aggregate orientation, characteristic width, length, aspect ratio, and number of layers using multiple TEM micrographs enabled the development of representative morphological models for each of the nanocomposite structures. Oxygen barrier properties of all three PS/clay hybrid systems were measured as a function of mineral composition and analyzed in terms of traditional Nielsen and Cussler approaches. A modification of the Nielsen model has been proposed, which considers the effect of layer aggregation (layer stacking) on gas barrier. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diazonium group–substituted polystyrene (PS–N) micrometer‐sized spheres with narrow distribution were prepared from highly crosslinked polystyrene particles. Then a composite sphere was prepared with the micro‐PS–N sphere as core and submicrometer‐sized poly(styrene‐methyl methacrylate‐acrylic acid) [P(S‐MMA‐AA)] colloids or nanometer‐sized SiO2 particles as shell via columbic interaction. The ionic linkages between the core and shell convert to covalent bonds in the thermal treatment process. As a result, the composite sphere becomes very stable toward polar solvents as well as toward ultrasonic treatment. A hollow SiO2 micrometer‐sized sphere then was achieved by removing the core under sintering conditions (700 °C). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butylene terephthalate) has two crystalline forms of α and β. The α form is more stable and is transformed into the β form by stretching. The α↔β transition stress was measured at various temperatures with the use of an X‐ray diffraction system with imaging plates, and the relationship between the transition stress and temperature was obtained. Further, using the X‐ray diffraction system, the drawing behavior of the nearly amorphous, undrawn polymer film was observed by taking up dynamically a series of X‐ray diffraction patterns while a film was being drawn. The α form never occurred during drawing at any temperature because the stress to draw the film exceeded the α→β transition stress. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Injection molded polymer parts are known to exhibit structural gradients of crystallinity, crystallite phases and crystallite orientations. The structural variations depend on the geometry, the material properties, and the processing conditions, and affect the mechanical properties of the molded part. We explore the use of raster‐scanning small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS) for mapping the microstructure in dogbone specimens of an isotactic polypropylene (PP) homopolymer and a talc‐reinforced isotactic PP compound. The specimens were injection molded with different mold temperatures and injection speeds, and the mapping approach revealed systematic structural heterogeneities and asymmetries. Accompanying numerical simulations of the injection molding process yielded predictions of the flow pattern, including the shear rate distribution and the resulting orientation of the flake‐shaped talc particles. We found a clear correspondence between the experimentally observed data and the simulations, in particular regarding the asymmetry of the orientation distributions relative to the center of the dogbone cross section, caused by asymmetric flow through the entrance of the mold. Furthermore, the shear rate distribution correlated with the occurrence of α‐ and β‐phases. Subtle differences in the crystallized structures along the long axis of the dogbones suggest an explanation to the observation that the specimens studied always tended to break at the same position in tensile tests. The results clearly demonstrate the potential of mapping experiments which combine lateral resolution on macroscopic length scales with the molecular‐scale resolution from scattering. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of functional groups bearing silica/poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylpyridine) core–shell particles as a support for a zirconocene catalyst in ethylene polymerization was studied. Several factors affecting the behavior of the supported catalyst and the properties of the resulting polymer, such as time, temperature, Al/N (molar ratio), and Al/Zr (molar ratio), were examined. The conditions of the supported catalyst preparation were more important than those of the ethylene polymerization. The state of the supported catalyst itself played a decisive role in both the catalytic behavior of the supported catalyst and the properties of polyethylene (PE). IR and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to follow the formation of the supports. The formation of cationic active species is hypothesized, and the performance of the core–shell‐particle‐supported zirconocene catalyst is discussed as well. The bulk density of the PE formed was higher than that of the polymer obtained from homogeneous and polymer‐supported Cp2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane catalyst systems. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. X‐ray diffraction technique is used to evaluate the evolution of the segmental orientation in a natural rubber sample during mechanical uniaxial stretching and in the Gaussian regime condition. The method proves to be sensitive enough for testing the validity of the stress‐optical law. Measurements are performed at different temperatures and show that the dependence of the orientation parameter upon elongation is very close to the prediction of classical phantom theories. On the contrary, a significant Mooney–Rivlin correction is needed to account for the stress–strain relation. Consequently, systematic deviations from the stress‐optical law are observed, in particular for elongations below 2. These deviations are adverse from predictions of both the constrained and the diffuse junction theories. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Blends of linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) with polystyrene (PS) and blends of LLDPE with high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) were prepared through a reactive extrusion method. For increased compatibility of the two blending components, a Lewis acid catalyst, aluminum chloride (AlCl3), was adopted to initiate the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction between the blending components. Spectra data from Raman spectra of the LLDPE/PS/AlCl3 blends extracted with tetrahydrofuran verified that LLDPE segments were grafted to the para position of the benzene rings of PS, and this confirmed the graft structure of the Friedel–Crafts reaction between the polyolefin and PS. Because the in situ generated LLDPE‐g‐PS and LLDPE‐g‐HIPS copolymers acted as compatibilizers in the relative blending systems, the mechanical properties of the LLDPE/PS and LLDPE/HIPS blending systems were greatly improved. For example, after compatibilization, the Izod impact strength of an LLDPE/PS blend (80/20 w/w) was increased from 88.5 to 401.6 J/m, and its elongation at break increased from 370 to 790%. For an LLDPE/HIPS (60/40 w/w) blend, its Charpy impact strength was increased from 284.2 to 495.8 kJ/m2. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the size of the domains decreased from 4–5 to less than 1 μm, depending on the content of added AlCl3. The crystallization behavior of the LLDPE/PS blend was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. Fractionated crystallization phenomena were noticed because of the reduction in the size of the LLDPE droplets. The melt‐flow rate of the blending system depended on the competition of the grafting reaction of LLDPE with PS and the degradation of the blending components. The degradation of PS only happened during the alkylation reaction between LLDPE and PS. Gel permeation chromatography showed that the alkylation reaction increased the molecular weight of the blend polymer. The low molecular weight part disappeared with reactive blending. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 1837–1849, 2003  相似文献

Synthetic biodegradable aliphatic polyester (BAP) intercalated into organoclay was prepared by melt compounding, and its solidlike characteristics were investigated via several rheological test modes: steady shear rotation, oscillation, and creep testing. Structural investigations with X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron spectroscopy were also performed for a better understanding of the characteristic rheological behaviors. The creep, recovery, and stress modulus exhibited a solidlike transition of BAP/clay nanocomposites that depended on the clay content. An increase in the zero shear rate viscosity and a shifting of the crossover point (storage modulus vs loss modulus) to a lower frequency were also observed with increasing clay contents. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes electrically conductive polymer blends containing polyaniline‐dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (PANI‐DBSA) dispersed in a polystyrene (PS) matrix or in crosslinked polystyrene (XPS). Melt blending of previously mixed, coagulated, and dried aqueous dispersions of PANI‐DBSA and PS latices lead to high conductivities at extremely low PANI‐DBSA concentrations (∼0.5 wt % PANI‐DBSA). In these blends, the very small size of the PANI‐DBSA particles and the surface properties (with surfactants used) of both the PANI and polymer particles play a major role in the PANI‐DBSA particle structuring process. The PANI‐DBSA behavior is characteristic of a unique colloidal polymeric filler with an extremely high surface area and a strong interaction with the matrix, evidenced by a significantly higher glass‐transition temperature of the matrix. The effect of the shear level on the conductivity and morphology of the PS/PANI‐DBSA blends was studied by the production of capillary rheometer filaments at various shear rates. An outstanding result was found for XPS/PANI‐DBSA blends prepared by the blending of aqueous XPS and PANI‐DBSA dispersions. Some of these blends were insulating at low shear levels; however, above a certain shear level, smooth surface filaments were generated, with dramatically increased and stable conductivities. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Structural studies on physical gels, based on a triblock copolymer and a solvent selective for its midblocks, are presented. Gel formation in such systems arises due to interconnected microdomains that form the junctions in a three‐dimensional network. Small angle X‐ray scattering studies revealed that the physical networks show either short‐range order, described by an effective hard sphere model, or long‐range order, where junctions are arranged on a cubic lattice. The emerging morphology depends on the thermal conditions during preparation of such systems, which essentially reflects a competition among microdomain ordering and formation of the physical network. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polystyrene (PS)/clay nanocomposites were synthesized by the emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of sodium ion‐exchanged montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT), demonstrating that the strongly hydrophobic PS was intercalated into the hydrophilic silicate layers. The nanocomposites were examined by means of X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis. The rheological properties of the PS/Na+‐MMT nanocomposites were also studied to exhibit more pronounced shear thinning behavior with increasing clay content.  相似文献

The morphology of transcrystalline isotactic polypropylene under tensile stress was studied with wide‐angle synchrotron X‐ray diffraction. The strain was apparently generated predominantly within the amorphous phase because no change in the crystal structure or in the orientation of the lamellae was detected. The results are interpreted in terms of anchoring of the transcrystalline layer to the fiber surface, and the possible consequences of these morphological features on the mechanical properties of the aramid–polypropylene composite as a whole are discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The production of high‐solid‐content, low‐viscosity latexes is an active field in both industry and academia. The viscosity of polymer dispersions has a clear dependence on the particle size distribution (PSD). An example is the rule of thumb that a bimodal PSD enables the reduction of the viscosity with respect to monomodal systems. Despite important progress in theoretical work, not much has been done to quantitatively predict the low shear viscosity of aqueous polymer dispersions as a function of the complex PSD. In this work, the capability of a low‐shear‐viscosity equation to quantitatively account for the influence of both the PSD and the physicochemical characteristics of the dispersions is experimentally assessed. An analysis, consistent with theoretical concepts, of the data with semiempirical correlations is proposed. Next, with values of the parameters of the viscosity equation obtained experimentally, the effect of a latex with a 70% solid content on the low shear viscosity is examined. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
