Two regioregular poly(p-phenyleneethynylene-alter-m-phenyleneethynylene)s bearing (−)-trans-myrtanoxyl side groups with different substitution patterns were designed and synthesized, e.g. Myr-PMPE-1 and Myr-PMPE-2. In Myr-PMPE-1, the side chiral groups are distributed uniformly along the backbone. In Myr-PMPE-2, the distribution of the side chiral groups is alternatively crowded and loose. Both of these two polymers show no CD signal in solutions because of their good solubility. The investigations of chiroptical properties of these two polymers were carried out in the form of spin-coated films. The films were annealed above the glass temperature of the corresponding polymer, and the effects of annealing temperature and time on the properties of the films were investigated by UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectra. The results show that annealing treatment had no significant effect on the properties of Myr-PMPE-1, including UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence and optical activity. The maximum absolute value of dissymmetry factor (|g max|) was 1.62 × 10−4. On the other hand, annealing treatment significantly affected the properties of Myr-PMPE-2. Without annealing or being annealed below 100°C, Myr-PMPE-2 films show almost no Cotton effect. In contrast, when annealed above 120°C, the absorption and emission of Myr-PMPE-2 films slightly red shifted with increasing annealing temperature and annealing time. Most importantly, the intensity of CD signals increased significantly and the optical activity of Myr-PMPE-2 films markedly increased. After annealing at 140°C for 4 h, the |g max| of Myr-PMPE-2 films was increased up to 3.07 × 10−3, about one order of magnitude higher than that of Myr-PMPE-1 films. __________ Translated from Acta Polymeric Sinica, 2008, 3 (in Chinese)  相似文献

This article presents two novel artificial helical polymers, substituted polyacetylenes with urea groups in side chains. Poly( 4 ) and poly( 5 ) can be obtained in high yields (≥97%) and with moderate molecular weights (11,000–14,000). Poly( 4 ) contains chiral centers in side chains, and poly( 5 ) is an achiral polymer. Both of the two polymers adopted helical structures under certain conditions. More interestingly, poly( 4 ) exhibited large specific optical rotations, resulting from the predominant one‐handed screw sense. The helical conformation in poly( 5 ) was stable against heat, while poly( 4 ) underwent conformational transition from helix to random coil upon increasing temperature from 0 to 55 °C. Solvents had considerable influence on the stability of the helical conformation in poly( 4 ). The screw sense adopted by the helices was also largely affected by the nature of the solvent. Poly( 4 ‐co‐ 5 )s formed helical conformation and showed large optical rotations, following the Sergeants and Soldiers rule. By comparing the present two polymers (with one ? N? H groups) with the three polymers previously reported (with two ? N? H groups in side chains), the nature of the hydrogen bonds formed between the neighboring urea groups played big roles in the formation of stable helical conformation. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three series of optically active photochromic copolymers, deriving from methyl methacrylate (MMA) and the chiral bisazoaromatic monomers (S)-3-methacryloyloxy-1-[4′-phenylazo-(4-azobenzene)]-pyrrolidine [(S)-MPAAP], (S)-3-methacryloyloxy-1-[4′-cyanophenylazo-(4-azobenzene)]-pyrrolidine [(S)-MPAAP-C] and (S)-3-methacryloyloxy-1-[4′-nitrophenylazo-(4-azobenzene)]-pyrrolidine [(S)-MPAAP-N], have been prepared and characterized in solution and in the solid state with the aim to evaluate the effect on their chiroptical and thermal properties originated by the insertion of inactive MMA groups along the main chain. The optical activity displayed by the bisazo polymers is discussed in terms of extent of chiral conformation assumed by the macromolecules as a consequence of dipole-dipole interactions between the bisazoaromatic chromophores. The photoinduction of birefringence has been assessed on thin films of the investigated copolymers in order to evaluate their behaviour as materials for optical data storage. The results are interpreted in terms of copolymer composition and conformational stiffness of the bisazoaromatic chromophoric co-units, which are responsible for the optical response rates, and are compared to those of the similar derivatives containing only one azo bond. The observed enhanced thermal properties and the temporal stability appear of interest for a potential use of these materials in nano technologies for all-optical data manipulation and in optoelectronics.  相似文献

Chiral poly(p‐phenylenevinylene‐altm‐phenylenevinylene)s bearing (?)‐trans‐myrtanoxyl groups on the p‐phenylene rings were synthesized by Wittig's reaction and Heck's reaction, respectively, namely Myr‐PMPV‐w and Myr‐PMPV‐h correspondingly. The chiroptical properties of the polymers were investigated in chlorobenzene solution by circular dichroism. The results showed that both Myr‐PMPV‐w and Myr‐PMPV‐h showed no Cotton effect due to their irregular molecular structure. By the treatment with I2, most of the cis‐vinylene linkages in Myr‐PMPV‐w were converted to trans‐vinylenes, consequently, the structure of Myr‐PMPV‐w became much more regular, and the resulting polymer ( iso‐Myr‐PMPV‐w ) showed strong bisignate Cotton effects in the π–π* transition. Compared to its analogous poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) ( iso‐Myr‐PPV‐w ), iso‐Myr‐PMPV‐w showed much stronger Cotton effect, its maximum g value was about one order of magnitude higher than that of iso‐Myr‐PPV‐w under the same conditions. With increasing concentration and decreasing temperature, the gmax value of iso‐Myr‐PMPV‐w increased, and the maximum absorption was slightly blue‐shifted, but the shape and range of absorption curves did not changed significantly, and no clear isosbestic point could be observed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New functionalized, (a)chiral poly(phenylene‐alt‐bithiophene)s were prepared and their chiroptical properties were studied. The polymers were prepared by a Stille coupling reaction and were functionalized with protected carboxylic acid and amino functions (tert‐butyl ester and BOC respectively). The polymers are present as well conjugated rigid rods in solution, which (chirally) aggregate in nonsolvents and film. In a next step, the protecting group (tert‐butyl ester in case of the carboxylic acid) was removed. Aggregation of this polymer can be induced by addition of amines; if chiral amines are used, the polymer chains chirally stack. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A chiral azobenzene‐containing N‐propargylamide monomer, that is, (R)‐2‐(4‐phenylazophenoxy)‐n‐prop‐2‐ynyl‐propionamide, was prepared and polymerized in the presence of a rhodium catalyst to yield an optically active polyacetylene. The 1H NMR analysis of the polymer indicated a predominant cis structure of the backbone (cis concentration = 80%); and the chiroptical property studies showed an enhanced optical rotatory power and a strong Cotton effect, indicating the formation of a secondary helical conformation. A reversible optical modulation of chiroptical properties of the polymer due to the reversible photoisomerization of the azobenzene was observed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of optically active methacrylic homopolymers, poly[(4‐{4′‐[(S)‐2‐methyl‐1‐butyloxycarbonyl]phenylazo}phenoxyl)x‐methylene methacrylate] (x = 0, 2, 6, or 11), were synthesized. The structures of the polymers were characterized by IR, 1H NMR, UV, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The chiroptical properties of the polymers in films were investigated with circular dichroism (CD) measurements. The CD and UV spectra of the films suggested that CD absorptions occurred in the films of the polymers with long spacers (x = 6 or 11) but not in the films of the polymers with short spacers (x = 0 or 2). After irradiation with linearly polarized light at 442 nm, the CD values were amplified in all the polymeric films. The amplificatory values of the CD bands in the absorption region (260–360 nm) of azobenzene chromophores suggested that the spacer length had an effect on both the transfer of chirality and photoinduced chirality in the polymeric films. The largest level of photoinduced chirality was induced in the polymer containing six methylene units. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 3210–3219, 2006  相似文献

Novel optically active amino acid based polyacetylenes bearing eugenol and fluorene moieties were synthesized, and their properties, including chiroptical ones, were analyzed. N‐[1‐(3,4‐Dimethoxyphenyl)‐2‐propyloxycarbonyl]‐L ‐alanine N′‐propargylamide ( 1 ), N‐[1‐(3,4‐dimethoxyphenyl)‐2‐propyloxycarbonyl]‐L ‐alanine propargyl ester ( 2 ), N‐(9‐fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl)‐L ‐alanine N′‐propargylamide ( 3 ), and N‐(9‐fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl)‐L ‐alanine propargyl ester ( 4 ) were polymerized with a rhodium‐zwitterion catalyst in tetrahydrofuran to afford the corresponding polymers with moderate molecular weights ranging from 10,800 to 17,300 in good yields. Because of the large specific rotation and circular dichroism (CD) signal, it was concluded that the poly(N‐propargylamide)s [poly( 1 ) and poly( 3 )] took a helical structure with a predominantly one‐handed screw sense. The solvent and temperature could tune the helical structure of poly( 1 ). On the other hand, the poly(propargyl ester)s [poly( 2 ) and poly( 4 )] exhibited only small specific rotations and CD signals. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis by radical homopolymerization of a novel optically active methacrylic polymer containing a side-chain chiral moiety linked to a photochromic bisazoaromatic chromophore has been carried out starting from the related monomer (S)-3-methacryloyloxy-1-[4′-phenylazo-(4-azobenzene)]-pyrrolidine [(S)- MPAAP ]. The polymeric derivate has been fully characterized and its spectroscopic properties compared to those of the monomer and of the corresponding homopolymer bearing only one azoaromatic chromophore in the side chain. The optical activity displayed by the bisazo polymer is discussed in terms of extent of chiral conformation assumed by the macromolecules as a consequence of dipole-dipole interactions between the bisazoaromatic chromophores.  相似文献

The Sonogashira–Hagihara coupling polymerization of d ‐hydroxyphenylglycine‐derived diiodo monomers 1–4 and platinum‐containing diethynyl monomer 5 gave the corresponding polymers [poly( 1–5 )–( 2–5 )] with number‐average molecular weights of 19,000–25,000 quantitatively. The polymers were soluble in CHCl3, CH2Cl2, THF, and DMF. CD and UV–vis spectroscopic analysis revealed that amide‐substituted polymers [poly( 1–5 ) and poly( 2–5 )] formed chiral higher‐order structures in solution, while ester‐substituted polymers [poly( 3–5 ) and poly( 4–5 )] did not. Poly( 1–5 ) formed one‐handed helices in THF/toluene mixtures, while it formed chiral aggregates in THF/MeOH mixtures. Poly( 1–5 ) emitted fluorescence with quantum yields ranging from 0.8 to 1.3%. The polymers usually aggregated in the solid state. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 2452–2461  相似文献

Polysilanes upon UV irradiation give rise to silyl macroradicals which are capable to initiate radical polymerization. Hence, chiral block functional polysilanes were synthesized by UV irradiation of poly(methylphenylsilane) (PMPS) with a vinyl chiral monomer, (R)‐N‐(1‐phenylethyl)methacrylamide (R‐NPEMAM). The synthesized copolymer samples were characterized by FTIR, NMR, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The number and weight average molecular weights of PMPS and synthesized chiral‐block‐PMPS were measured by GPC analysis. Two glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the synthesized materials clearly indicate the formation of chiral‐block‐PMPS copolymers. SEM analysis also indicated the synthesized organic–inorganic block copolymers. The optical and chiroptical properties of the synthesized materials were studied. The cotton effect is observed not only at 276 nm due to aromatic ring of the chiral monomer units but also at 325 nm which is associated with the Si–Si conjugation of PMPS block of synthesized functional polysilanes. Such tunable chirality may find potential application in optoelectronics. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 3626–3634  相似文献

A novel chiral N‐propargylsulfamide monomer ( 1a ) and its enantiomer ( 1b ) were synthesized and polymerized with (nbd)Rh+B?(C6H5)4 as a catalyst providing poly(1) (poly( 1a ) and poly( 1b )) in high yields (≥99%). Poly(1) could take stable helices in less polar solvents (chloroform and THF), demonstrated by strong circular dichroism signals and UV–vis absorption peaks at about 415 nm and the large specific rotations; but in more polar solvents including DMF and DMSO, poly(1) failed to form helix. Quantitative evaluation with anisotropy factor showed that the helical screw sense had a relatively high thermal stability. These results together with the IR spectra measured in solvents showed that hydrogen bonding between the neighboring sulfamide groups is one of the main driving forces for poly(1) to adopt stable helices. In addition, copolymerization of monomer 1a and monomer 2 was conducted, the solubility of poly(1) was improved drastically. However, the copolymerization had adverse effects on the formation of stable helices in the copolymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 500–508, 2007  相似文献

We have investigated a new optically active photochromic homopolymer poly[(R)-3-methacryloyloxy-1-(4′-cyano-4-azobenzene)pyrrolidine] containing in the side-chain a chiral group of one prevailing configuration linked to a trans-azoaromatic system. As expected it exhibits in solution homogeneous conformations with a prevailing chirality induced by dipole-dipole interactions between side-chain chromophores. Copolymers with the enantiomeric monomer (S)-3-methacryloyloxy-1-(4′-cyano-4-azobenzene)pyrrolidine have also been prepared in order to evaluate the effect on the photoinduced optical properties of side-chain chiral groups of opposite configuration in various ratios. The possibility of producing reversible photomodulation of linear birefringence without any significant degradation of these materials seems to be promising for their use in optical data storage.  相似文献

Diacetylene monomers with respective lengths of the oxyethylene chains were cyclopolymerized with a rhodium catalyst to produce novel poly(phenylacetylene)s bearing a different cavity size of the chiral crown ether in the repeating units ( 2a – c ). In the circular dichroism spectra of the resulting polymers, characteristic Cotton effects were observed in the range from 350 to 500 nm corresponding to the absorption of the conjugated polymer backbone, indicating that the polymers possessed a helical structure with an excess single screw sense induced by the covalently bonded binaphthyl units. The host–guest complexation of 2a – c with achiral guests produced a chiroptical change based on the fluctuation in the main chain conformation. The behavior of the complexation‐induced chiroptical change was essentially dictated by the cavity size of the binaphthocrown ether units. Additionally, a chirality‐responsive helicity change was observed in the case of the complexation of 2a – c with chiral guests, which also depended on the crown ether size. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of photochromic optically active copolymers from trans-4-(phenylazo)-1-naphthyl acrylate (PANA), or trans-4-(1-naphthylazo)-phenyl acrylate (NAPA), and (?)-menthyl acrylate (MtA) is described. The copolymers prepared, having different contents of trans-phenylazonaphthalene moieties, have been characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, UV, and GPC techniques. The chiroptical properties have been investigated by circular dichroism (CD) and the induced optical activity on the side-chain trans-phenylazonaphthalene chromophores discussed in terms of different conformational situations of the macromolecules in both the copolymer series. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We successfully synthesized optically active polymers by using a chiral bisphosphine, (S,S)‐1,2‐bis[boranato(t‐butyl)methylphosphino]ethane, as a key building block. Their structures were characterized with 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectra. The obtained polymers exhibited different glass‐transition temperatures depending on the structure of each comonomer, whereas a model compound had a melting point. According to circular dichroism spectra, the difference in the stereochemistry of the comonomers yielded the different higher‐ordered structures of the polymers induced by chiral phosphine units. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dibenzofulvene (DBF) affords a polymer having π‐stacked conformation by anionic, cationic, and free‐radical polymerization. In this study, DBF was polymerized anionically using potassium menthoxide as initiator to obtain optically active poly(DBF) having a chiral menthoxy group as a terminal group. The obtained polymer indicated circular dichroism (CD) absorption bands in the absorption wavelength range of fluorenyl group, indicating that chiral conformation was induced to the stacked main chain by the influence of the terminal group. The CD intensity was reversibly affected by temperature of measurement; hence, the chiral conformation may be rather dynamic. The effect of the terminal group was found to decrease as the chain length increased. Theoretical CD calculation indicated that the obtained polymer has a left‐handed helical conformation and that the dihedral angle between neighboring monomeric units might be about 10–20°. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Optically active poly[(R)‐ or (S)‐1,4‐bis(2‐(3′,4′‐ethylenedioxy)thienyl)‐2‐benzoic acid 1‐methylheptyl ester] was prepared by an electrochemical technique and characterized by circular dichroism measurements. It was found that the optical activity and optical rotation of the film could be controlled by adjusting the electronic state of the electrochemical process. Polymer films prepared in the oxidized state exhibit a weak Cotton effect, while the reduced polymer film exhibits the expected mirror‐image bisignate Cotton effect in the region of the ππ* transition of the polymer main chain. These results indicate that the main chain itself is chiral in the film state. This procedure has great potential for the preparation of functional electrochromic devices and the improved preparation of durable electrochromic devices based on the good film‐forming properties of the chiral polymer.

We synthesized two optically active helical polysilanes, poly[(S)-3,7-dimethyloctyl-3-phenylpropylsilane] (PS1) and poly[(R)-3,7-dimethyloctyl-3-phenylpropylsilane] (PS2), bearing a flexible and rodlike silicon main chain and enantiopure alkyl side chains with (S)- and (R)-chiral centers, respectively, at the γ-positions. PS1 and PS2 underwent a thermodriven helix–helix transition at 10 °C in isooctane. Circular dichroism (CD) and UV studies demonstrated the transition characteristics, such as the transition temperature, population of right- and left-handed helical motifs, global shape, and screw pitch. At −80 °C, the dissymmetry ratio suggested that a preferential right-handed or left-handed screw sense was present in the polymer chains of PS1 and PS2, respectively. However, above the transition temperature, the appearance of a bisignate cotton band in the CD spectra suggested that both right-handed screw-sense, tight helical segments and left-handed screw-sense, loose helical segments coexisted in the same chains of PS1 and PS2. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
