In this article, we discuss a new chemical route for preparing polypropylene (PP) graft copolymers containing a PP backbone and several (polar and nonpolar) polymer side chains, including polybutadiene, polystyrene, poly(p-methylstyrene), poly(methyl methacrylate), and polyacrylonitrile. The new PP graft copolymers had a controlled molecular structure and a known PP molecular weight, graft density, graft length, and narrow molecular weight distribution of the side chains. The chemistry involves an intermediate poly(propylene-co-p-methylstyrene) copolymer containing few p-methylstyrene (p-MS) units. The methyl group in a p-MS unit could be lithiated selectively by alkylithium to form a stable benzylic anion. Because of the insolubility of the PP copolymer at room temperature, the excess alkylithium could be removed completely from the lithiated polymer. By the addition of the anionically polymerizable monomers, including polar and nonpolar monomers, the stable benzylic anions in PP initiated a living anionic graft-from polymerization at ambient temperature to produce PP graft copolymers without any significant side reactions. The side-chain length was basically proportional to the reaction time and monomer concentration. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 4176–4183, 1999  相似文献

ABCD‐type 4‐miktoarm star copolymers of styrene (St), α‐methylstyrene (αMSt), tert‐butyl methacrylate (tBuMA), and 4‐vinylpyridine (4VP) were synthesized via anionic polymerization using 1,3‐bis(1‐phenylvinyl)benzene (m‐DDPE) as the linking molecule. The synthetic route was rationally designed with respect to the reactivity of individual propagating anion towards the double bond of m‐DDPE. Thus the synthesis includes several consecutive key reactions, for example, the monoaddition of polystyryllithium towards m‐DDPE, the polymerization of tBuMA initiated by the resulting monoadduct to produce a diblock macromonomer, the coupling of the macromonomer with poly(α‐methylstyryl)lithium to form a 3‐arm star anion, and the polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine initiated by the star anion. These reactions were conducted either in a one‐pot process, in which the diblock macromonomer was in situ coupled with poly(α‐methylstyryl)lithium, or in a batch polymerization process, in which the same diblock macromonomer was separated. The final product was hydrolyzed to produce a zwitterionic miktoarm star copolymer, which was soluble at lower pH but insoluble in neutral and basic solution. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of graft (co)polymers were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reaction between iodinated 1,2‐polybutadiene (PB‐I, backbone) and living polymer lithium (side chains). The coupling reaction between PB‐I and living polymers can finish within minutes at room temperature, and high conversion (up to 92%) could be obtained by effectively avoiding side reaction of dimerization when living polymers were capped with 1,1‐diphenylethylene. By virtue of living anionic polymerization, backbone length, side chain length, and side chain composition, as well as graft density, were well controlled. Tunable molecular weight of graft (co)polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution can be obtained by changing either the lengths of side chain and backbone, or the graft density. Graft copolymers could also be synthesized with side chains of multicomponent polymers, such as block polymer (polystyrene‐b‐polybutadiene) and even mixed polymers (polystyrene and polybutadiene) as hetero chains. Thus, based on living anionic polymerization, this work provides a facile way for modular synthesis of graft (co)polymers via nucleophilic substitution reaction between living polymers and polyhalohydrocarbon (PB‐I). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One-pot, spontaneous, and in-situ incorporation of Ru(II) complexes into a microgel (solubilized nanometer-scale network) has been achieved in near quantitative efficiency by a polymer-linking reaction of linear living poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a bifunctional methacrylate (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or bisphenol A dimethacrylate; linking agent) and a phosphine-ligand monomer [diphenyl-4-styryl-phosphine ( 3 ); i.e., CH2CH C6H4p-PPh2] in the RuCl2(PPh3)3-catalyzed living radical polymerization. The products were Ru-bearing. PMMA-armed star polymers with a microgel-core that consisted of a copolymer network of the linking agent and 3 . Upon the network formation, the phosphine ligands efficiently encapsulated RuCl2(PPh3)3, thus achieving a polymer catalyst directly from a polymerization catalyst. Colored dark brown-red, the star polymers exhibited UV-vis absorptions originating from the entrapped complex (3.1–7.4 × 10−5 mol Ru/g of polymer), the incorporation efficiency being close to 100% with respect to the original polymerization-catalyst. Detailed spectroscopic characterization showed the following: an absolute molecular weight of 1.7 × 105 to 1.7 × 106, an arm number of 11–92 arms/polymer, and a radius of gyration of 8–19 nm (in DMF). Direct observation of the individual star molecules in solid state was achieved by transmission electron microscopy (unstained; 2–3 nm dark dots for the core) and atomic force microscopy (semi-circular images). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of arborescent styrenic homopolymers and copolymers was achieved by anionic polymerization and grafting. Styrene and p‐(3‐butenyl)styrene were first copolymerized using sec‐butyllithium in toluene, to generate a linear copolymer with a weight‐average molecular weight Mw = 4000 and Mw/Mn = 1.05. The pendant double bonds of the copolymer were then epoxidized with m‐chloroperbenzoic acid. A comb‐branched (or arborescent generation G0) copolymer was obtained by coupling the epoxidized substrate with living styrene‐p‐(3‐butenyl)styrene copolymer chains with Mw ≈ 5000 in a toluene/tetrahydrofuran mixture. Further cycles of epoxidation and coupling reactions while maintaining Mw ≈ 5000 for the side chains yielded arborescent copolymers of generations G1–G3. A series of arborescent styrene homopolymers was also obtained by grafting Mw ≈ 5000 polystyrene side chains onto the linear and G0–G2 copolymer substrates. Size exclusion chromatography measurements showed that the graft polymers have low polydispersity indices (Mw/Mn = 1.02–1.15) and molecular weights increasing geometrically over successive generations. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core‐cleavable star polymers were synthesized by the coupling of living anionic poly(alkyl methacrylate) arms with either dicumyl alcohol dimethacrylate (DCDMA) or 2,5‐dimethyl‐2,5‐hexanediol dimethacrylate (DHDMA). This synthetic methodology led to the formation of star polymers that exhibited high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The labile tertiary alkyl esters in the DCDMA and DHDMA star polymer cores were readily hydrolyzed under acidic conditions. High‐molecular‐weight star polymer cleavage led to well‐defined arm polymers with lower molecular weights. Hydrolysis was confirmed via 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the star polymers demonstrated that the DCDMA and DHDMA star polymer cores also thermally degraded in the absence of acid catalysts at 185 and 220 °C, respectively, and the core‐cleavage temperatures were independent of the arm polymer composition. The difference in the core‐degradation temperatures was attributed to the increased reactivity of the DCDMA‐derived cores. TGA/mass spectrometry detected the evolution of the diene byproduct of the core degradation and confirmed the proposed degradation mechanism. The DCDMA monomer exhibited a higher degradation rate than DHDMA under identical reaction conditions because of the additional resonance stabilization of the liberated byproduct, which made it a more responsive cleavable coupling monomer than DHDMA. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft polymers [poly(isoprene)‐graft‐poly(styrene)] (PI‐g‐PS), [poly(isoprene)‐graft‐poly(isoprene)] (PI‐g‐PI), [poly(isoprene)‐graft‐(poly(isoprene)‐block‐poly(styrene))] PI‐g‐(PI‐b‐PS), and [poly(isoprene)‐graft‐(poly(styrene)‐block‐poly(isoprene))] PI‐g‐(PS‐b‐PI) with PI as main chain were synthesized through living anionic polymerization (LAP) mechanism and the efficient coupling reaction. First, the PI was synthesized by LAP mechanism and epoxidized in H2O2/HCOOH system for epoxidized PI (EPI). Then, the graft polymers with controlled molecular weight of main chain and side chains, and grafting ratios were obtained by coupling reaction between PI?Li+, PS?Li+, PS‐b‐PI?Li+, or PI‐b‐PS?Li+ macroanions and the epoxide on EPI. The target polymers and all intermediates were well characterized by SEC,1H NMR, as well as their thermal properties were also evaluated by DSC. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of copolymers constituted of a central polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) block flanked by two polyamide (PA) sequences is described. α, ω-diacyllactam PDMS, when used as macroinitiator of lactam polymerization, gives rise to the expected triblock copolymer. Likewise, PDMS-g-PA graft copolymers are obtained from acyllactam containing polysiloxanes. NaAlH2(OCH2CH2OMe)2 turns out to be the best suited activating agent for the polymerization of ?-caprolactam, in the experimental conditions required for the synthesis of polysiloxane–polyamide copolymers. The nucleophilic species formed by reaction of NaAlH2(OCH2CH2OMe)2 with ?-caprolactam—2-[bis(methoxyethoxy) aluminumoxy]-1-azacycloheptane sodium—is indeed nucleophilic enough to bring about the growth of PA chains and mild enough to stay inert towards PDMS. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Graft and star copolymers having poly(methacrylate) backbone and ethylene–propylene random copolymer (EPR) branches were successfully synthesized by radical copolymerization of an EPR macromonomer with methyl methacrylate (MMA). EPR macromonomers were prepared by sequential functionalization of vinylidene chain‐end group in EPR via hydroalumination, oxidation, and esterification reactions. Their copolymerizations with MMA were carried out with monofunctional and tetrafunctional initiators by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Gel‐permeation chromatography and NMR analyses confirmed that poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)‐g‐EPR graft copolymers and four‐arm (PMMA‐g‐EPR) star copolymers could be synthesized by controlling EPR contents in a range of 8.6–38.1 wt % and EPR branch numbers in a range of 1–14 branches. Transmission electron microscopy of these copolymers demonstrated well‐dispersed morphologies between PMMA and EPR, which could be controlled by the dispersion of both segments in the range between 10 nm and less than 1 nm. Moreover, the differentiated thermal properties of these copolymers were demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry analysis. On the other hand, the copolymerization of EPR macromonomer with MMA by conventional free radical polymerization with 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) also gave PMMA‐g‐EPR graft copolymers. However, their morphology and thermal property remarkably differed from those of the graft copolymers obtained by ATRP. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic graft polymers of vinyl ethers (VEs) ( 6 ) where each branch consists of a hydrophilic polyalcohol and a hydrophobic poly(alkyl vinyl ether) segment were prepared on the basis of living cationic polymerization, and their properties and functions were compared with the corresponding amphiphilic star-shaped polymers. In toluene at ?15°C, the HI/ZnI2-initiated living block polymer 2 of an ester-containing VE (CH2? CHOCH2CH2OCOCH3) and isobutyl VE (IBVE) was terminated with the diethyl 2-(vinyloxy)ethylmalonate anion [ 3 ; ΦC(COOEt)2CH2CH2OCH ? CH2] ( 2/3 = 1/2 mole ratio) to give a macromonomer ( 4 ), H[CH2CH(OCH2CH2OCOCH3)] m-[CH2CH(OiBu)]n? C(COOEt)2CH2CH2OCH ? CH2 (m = 5, n = 15; M?n = 2600, M?w/M?n = 1.13, 1.10 vinyl groups/chain). Subsequently, 4 was homopolymerized with HI/ZnI2 in toluene at ?15°C. In 3 h, 85% of 4 was consumed and a graft polymer ( 5 ) was obtained [M?w = 15000, DPn (for 4 ) = 6]. The apparent M?w (10,900) of 5 by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is smaller than that by light scattering as well as that (18,300) by SEC of the corresponding linear polymer with the almost same molecular weight, indicating the formation of a multi-branched structure. Hydrolysis of the pendant esters in 5 gave the amphiphilic graft polymer 6 where each branch consists of a hydrophilic polyalcohol and a hydrophobic poly(IBVE) segment. The graft polymer 6 was found to interact specifically with small organic molecules (guests) with polar functional groups, and 6 differed in solubility and host-guest interaction from the corresponding star-shaped polymer. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This paper describes a new method to prepare graft copolymers, such as polyethylene‐g‐polystyrene (PE‐g‐PS), with a relatively well‐controlled reaction mechanism. The chemistry involves a transformation process from the metallocene copolymerization of ethylene and m,p‐methylstyrene (m,p‐MS) to nitroxide‐mediated “living” free radical polymerization (LRFP) of styrene. The metallocene catalysis produces ethylene‐co‐m,p‐methylstyrene (EMS) random copolymers. Next, 1‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine (HO‐TEMPO) was synthesized by the reduction of TEMPO with sodium ascorbate. The macroinitiator (EMS‐TEMPO) was synthesized with the bromination reaction of EMS, and the following nucleofilic reaction with this functional nitroxyl compound. The resulting macroinitiator (EMS‐TEMPO) for LRFP was then heated in the presence of styrene to form graft copolymer. DSC, 1H‐NMR, FTIR spectroscopy were employed to investigate the structure of the polymers. The results of Molau test showed that PE‐g‐PS could be a potential good compatilizer. A series of thermo-responsive and water-soluble 4- and 8-arm star-branched poly(2-(2′-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) (poly(1)) with well-defined structures were synthesized by living anionic polymerization of 1, followed by a linking reaction with a core compound substituted with either four or eight benzyl bromide moieties. Furthermore, two kinds of sequentially different 4-arm star block copolymers composed of poly(1)-block-poly ((2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl methacrylate) (poly(4)) were also synthesized by the same linking reaction of the corresponding AB or BA diblock copolymer anion with a core compound substituted with four benzyl bromide moieties. Thus, both well-defined 4-arm (AB)4 and (BA)4 star-block copolymers, whose A and B are poly(1) and poly(4) segments, were successfully synthesized. These star-block copolymers were quantitatively converted to the corresponding 4-arm (AC)4 and (CA)4 star-block copolymers with the same compositions by hydrolytic acetal cleavage of the poly(4) segment to poly(2,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate) (C segment). Poly(1) segments have LCST values and, on the other hand, both water-insoluble poly(4)s and water-soluble poly(2,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate)s are non-thermo-responsive segments. The thermo-responsive behavior of the resulting 4- and 8-arm star-branched poly(1) as well as the 4-arm (AB)4, (BA)4, (AC)4, and (CA)4 star-branched block copolymers has been extensively studied in terms of molecular weight, arm number, composition, and block sequence. As expected, such variables were observed to affect their LCST values. Interestingly, the thermo-responsive behavior of the 4-arm (AC)4 and (CA)4 stars was different from that of the block copolymers used as arm segments.  相似文献

Star‐shaped polybutadiene stars were synthesized by a convergent coupling of polybutadienyllithium with 4‐(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene (CDMSS). CDMSS was added slowly and continuously to the living anionic chains until a stoichiometric equivalent was reached. Gel permeation chromatography‐multi‐angle laser light scattering (GPC‐MALLS) was used to determine the molecular weights and molecular weight distribution of the polybutadiene polymers. The number of arms incorporated into the star depended on the molecular weight of the initial chains and the rate of addition of the CDMSS. Low molecular weight polybutadiene arms (Mn = 640 g/mol) resulted in polybutadiene star polymers with an average of 12.6 arms, while higher molecular weight polybutadiene arms (Mn = 16,000 g/mol) resulted in polybutadiene star polymers with an average of 5.3 arms. The polybutadiene star polymers exhibited high 1,4‐polybutadiene microstructure (88.3–93.1%), and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.11–1.20). Polybutadiene stars were subsequently hydrogenated by two methods, heterogeneous catalysis (catalytic hydrogenation using Pd/CaCO3) or reaction with p‐toluenesulfonhydrazide (TSH), to transform the polybutadiene stars into polyethylene stars. The hydrogenation of the polybutadiene stars was found to be close to quantitative by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We described the obtention of A2B star block copolymers through the use of a new heterotrifunctional initiator. That way, well‐defined (PCL)2‐arm‐PtBuMA and (PCL)2‐arm‐PS star block copolymers have been synthesized from a heterotrifunctional initiator bearing two hydroxyl groups able to initiate ROP of CL (with AlEt3 or Sn(Oct)2 as coinitiator) and a bromide function able to initiate ATRP of tBuMA or styrene. Firstly, we have proceeded using a sequential process (two‐steps), leading to an intermediate macroinitiator. Secondly, attempt to polymerize these two monomers in a simultaneous process (one‐step), that is directly from the mixture of monomers, initiator, coinitiators, and solvent, has been realized and has shown that some interferences between the two polymerizations occurred, leading to an inhibition of ATRP when Sn(Oct)2 was used and an unexpected increase in control when AlEt3 was used as catalyst for the ROP (obtention of well‐defined (PCL)2‐arm‐PtBuMA with pdi of 1.18). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. α-End-functionalized polymers and macromonomers of β-pinene were synthesized by living cationic isomerization polymerization in CH2Cl2 at −40°C initiated with the HCl adducts [ 1; CH3CH(OCH2CH2X)Cl; X = chloride ( 1a ), acetate ( 1b ), and methacrylate ( 1c )] of vinyl ethers carrying pendant substituents X that serve as terminal functionalities. In conjunction with TiCl3(OiPr) and nBu4NCl, these functionalized initiators led to living β-pinene polymerization where the carbon–chlorine bond of 1 was activated by TiCl3(OiPr). Similarly, end-functionalized poly(p-methylstyrene)-block-poly(β-pinene) were also obtained. 1H-NMR analysis showed that the polymers possess controlled molecular weights (DP n = [M]0/[ 1 ]0) and number-average end functionalities close to unity. The end-functionalized methacrylate-capped macromonomers form 1c were radically copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) to give graft copolymers carrying poly(β-pinene) or poly(p-methylstyrene)-block-poly(β-pinene) as graft chains attached to a PMMA backbone. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Anionic polymerization high-vacuum techniques and appropriate multifunctional initiators/additives were employed for the synthesis of novel star structures of poly(n-hexyl isocyanate) (PHIC). A new trifunctional initiator prepared by the reaction of tris(4-isocyanatophenyl)methane with benzyl sodium was used for the synthesis of three-arm star PHIC. Divinyl benzene and the core-first or the arm-first/core-first (in-out) approach were utilized for the synthesis of multiarm star homopolymers, (PHIC)n, star-block copolymers, (PHIC-b-PI)n, and miktoarm star copolymers, (PS)n(PHIC)n, where PS is polystyrene. The molecular characteristics obtained by size-exclusion chromatography, equipped with refractive index and two-angle light scattering detectors, nuclear magnetic resonance, spectroscopy, and dilute solution viscometry showed that well-defined structures were synthesized in this study. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
