The viscoelastic behavior of amorphous ethylene–styrene interpolymers (ESIs) was studied in the glass transition region. The creep behavior at temperatures from 15°C below the glass transition temperature (Tg) to Tg was determined for three amorphous ESIs. These three copolymers with 62, 69, and 72 wt % styrene had glass transition temperatures of 11, 23, and 33°C, respectively, as determined by DMTA at 1 Hz. Time–temperature superposition master curves were constructed from creep curves for each polymer. The temperature dependence of the shift factors was well described by the WLF equation. Using the Tg determined by DMTA at 1 Hz as a reference temperature, C1 and C2 constants for the Williams, Landel, and Ferry (WLF) equation were calculated as approximately 7 and 40 K, respectively. The master curves were used to obtain the retardation time spectrum and the plateau compliance. The entanglement molecular weight obtained from the plateau compliance increased with increasing styrene content as 1,600, 1,870, and 2,040, respectively. The entanglement molecular weight of the ESIs was much closer to that of polyethylene (1,390) than to that of polystyrene (18,700); this was attributed to the unique chain microstructure of these ESIs with no styrene–styrene dyads. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The synergism in the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of ternary systems based on benzoxazine (B), epoxy (E), and phenolic (P) resins is reported. The systems show the maximum Tg up to about 180 °C in BEP541 (B/E/P = 5/4/1). Adding a small fraction of phenolic resin enhances the crosslink density and, therefore, the Tg in the copolymers of benzoxazine and epoxy resins. To obtain the ultimate Tg in the ternary systems, 6–10 wt % phenolic resin is needed. The molecular rigidity from benzoxazine and the improved crosslink density from epoxy contribute to the synergistic behavior. The mechanical relaxation spectra of the fully cured ternary systems in a temperature range of −140 to 350 °C show four types of relaxation transitions: γ transition at −80 to −60 °C, β transition at 60–80 °C, α1 transition at 135–190 °C, and α2 transition at 290–300 °C. The partially cured specimens show an additional loss peak that is frequency‐independent as a result of the further curing process of the materials. The ternary systems have a potential use as electronic packaging molding compounds as well as other highly filled systems. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polyimide copolymers containing 2,2′‐bipyridine were synthesized and characterized. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the polymers ranged from 260 to 300 °C. In contrast to most known organic chromophore‐containing polyimides, the polyimide copolymers in this study showed elevated Tg's (270–320 °C) after coordination with nickel malenonitriledithiolate inorganic chromophores. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The ability to prepare high Tg low shrinkage thiol–ene materials is attractive for applications such as coatings and dental restoratives. However, thiol and nonacrylated vinyl materials typically consist of a flexible backbone, limiting the utility of these polymers. Hence, it is of importance to synthesize and investigate thiol and vinyl materials of varying backbone chemistry and stiffness. Here, we investigate the effect of backbone chemistry and functionality of norbornene resins on polymerization kinetics and glass transition temperature (Tg) for several thiol–norbornene materials. Results indicate that Tgs as high as 94 °C are achievable in thiol–norbornene resins of appropriately controlled chemistry. Furthermore, both the backbone chemistry and the norbornene moiety are important factors in the development of high Tg materials. In particular, as much as a 70 °C increase in Tg was observed in a norbornene–thiol specimen when compared with a sample prepared using allyl ether monomer of analogous backbone chemistry. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, ultrafast differential scanning calorimetry (UFDSC) is used to study the dynamics of phase separation. Taking poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polystyrene (PVME/PS) blend as the example, we firstly obtained the phase diagram that has lower critical solution temperature (LCST), together with the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the homogeneous blend with different composition. Then, the dynamics of the phase separation of the PVME/PS blend with a mass ratio of 7:3 was studied in the time range from milliseconds to hours, by the virtue of small time and spatial resolution that UFDSC offers. The time dependence of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVME‐rich phase, shows a distinct change when the annealing temperature (Ta) changes from below to above 385 K. This corresponds to the transition from the nucleation and growth (NG) mechanism to the spinodal decomposition (SD) mechanism, as was verified by morphological and rheometric investigations. For the SD mechanism, the temperature‐dependent composition evolution in PVME‐rich domain was found to follow the Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) laws. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. An optical microscope equipped with a video photograph system was used to follow the growth of spherulites. Under nitrogen atmosphere, the growth rates at 290 and 300°C suggest that when the melt of PEEK has been equilibrated for 15 min at 400°C, the subsequent crystallization behavior was nearly independent of the prior thermal history. Linear growth rates of crystallization of PEEK have been measuredin the temperature range of 260–325°C for melt-pressed films and solvent cast films. Detailed kinetic analysis indicated that PEEK exhibited an unmistakable regime II → III transition at 296 ± 1°C. The II → III transition was clearly present irrespective of the rather drastic changes in U*. It is interesting that the branching and crosslinking retarded the growth rate of PEEK, but a transition from regime II to regime III still existed. For melt-pressed films after equilibration at 400°C for 15 min, values of σ and q suggest that U* should be taken nearer to 1500 cal/mol in the case of T = Tg − 30 K and 2000 cal/mol in the case of T = Tg − 51.6 K. The Kg(III)/Kg(II) ratio (1.32) was not as close to the predicted value of 2 as was Hoffman's ratio. For PEEK, the Thomas-Staveley constant (β) should be closer to 0.25 or 0.3 instead of 0.1. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 1335–1348, 1998  相似文献

The pyroelectric properties of oriented thin films of ferroelectric Polyamide 11 have been studied in the temperature range of −100°C up to +140°C. The temperature dependence of the experimental pyroelectric coefficient has been analyzed. Three changes of slope of the pyroelectric coefficient are observed at −20, +50, and +100°C. The origin of the lower temperature event has not yet been defined. The upper transition is attributed to chain movements in crystalline regions, and more precisely, to a crystalline phase transition. The intermediate event is close to the glass transition temperature Tg observed by DSC. It is attributed to the manifestation of the glass transition. Below Tg, the variations of the pyroelectric coefficient are very small. For higher temperatures, it increases rapidly, attesting to a major contribution of secondary pyroelectricity and dimensional effects above Tg. The breaking of hydrogen bonds occurring at the glass transition temperature observed on DSC thermograms does not affect pyroelectric properties. Pyroelectric properties are mildly reduced after annealing at temperatures up to +140°C. A comparative study of oriented ferroelectric films prepared by quenching from the melt and nonoriented slowly cooled samples has been carried out by means of DSC. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The thermophysical and mechanical properties of a nanocomposite material composed of amine‐cured diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) reinforced with organomontmorillonite clay are reported. The storage modulus at 100 °C, which was above the glass‐transition temperature (Tg), increased approximately 350% with the addition of 10 wt % (6.0 vol %) of clay. Below the Tg, the storage modulus at 30 °C increased 50% relative to the value of unfilled epoxy. It was determined that the Tg linearly increased as a function of clay volume percent. The tensile modulus of epoxy at room temperature increased approximately 50% with the addition of 10 wt % of clay. The reinforcing effect of the organoclay nanoplatelets is discussed with respect to the Tandon–Weng and Halpin–Tsai models. A pseudoinclusion model is proposed to describe the behavior of randomly oriented, uniformly dispersed platelets in nanocomposite materials. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To have a better insight into the effect of interaction between polymer matrix and clay on the properties of nanocomposite, poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by a heterocoagulation method. Using a reactive cationic emulsifier, methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC), a strong polymer–clay interaction was obtained with the advantage of keeping a consistent polymer matrix property. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electronic microscopy indicated an exfoliated structure in nanocomposites. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposites was measured by DSC and DMA. The DMA results showed that with a strong interaction, PMMA–METAC nanocomposite showed a 20 °C enhancement in glass transition temperature (Tg), whereas a slight increase in Tg was observed for PMMA–cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/clay nanocomposite with a weak interaction. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work describes the melting and polymorphic behavior of poly(decamethylene terephthalamide) (PA 10T). Both solution‐crystallized (SC) and melt‐crystallized (MC) PA 10T show double melting endotherms in DSC. The SC crystal form melts at 260–300°C giving the first melting endotherm, and meanwhile undergoes a polymorphic transition forming the MC crystal form. The subsequent melting of the MC crystal form gives the second melting endotherm at 300–325°C. This irreversible polymorphic transition is confirmed by variable‐temperature WAXD and IR. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) shows a glass transition temperature (Tg) at 127°C and the presence of an α′ transition at 203°C (0.1 and 1 Hz). This transition could be confirmed by DSC and variable‐temperature WAXD experiments. The α′ transition correlates with a reversible thermal process and a sudden change in intersheet spacing. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Three reactive epoxy–amine systems based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS), 4,4′-methylenebis [3-chloro 2,6-diethylaniline] (MCDEA), and 4,4′-methylenebis [2,6-diethylaniline] (MDEA), were studied during isothermal curings at 140 and 160°C. The simultaneous kinetic and dielectric studies allow to express conductivity, σ, in terms of conversion, x, and of glass transition temperature, Tg. The conductivity, σ0, of the initial monomer mixture and, σ of the fully cured network are measured. It is found that:
  • The glass transition temperature, Tg, versus conversion, x, curves follows the equation of Di Benedetto modified by Pascault and Williams
  • There exists a linear relation between log σ/log σ0 and Tg.
So, it is possible to predict both kinetic and dielectric behaviors of these epoxy-amine systems by the knowledge of Tg0, ΔCp0, and σ0, respectively, glass transition temperature, heat capacity, and conductivity of initial monomer mixture, Tg and ΔCp, and σ, respectively, glass transition temperature and heat capacity and conductivity of fully cured network. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the segmental (α) and secondary (β) relaxations in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVPh/PMMA) blends with PVPh concentrations of 20–80% and at temperatures from ?30 to approximately glass‐transition temperature (Tg) + 80 °C. Miscible blends were obtained by solution casting from methyl ethyl ketone solution, as confirmed by single differential scanning calorimetry Tg and single segmental relaxation process for each blend. The β relaxation of PMMA maintains similar characteristics in blends with PVPh, compared with neat PMMA. Its relaxation time and activation energy are nearly the same in all blends. Furthermore, the dielectric relaxation strength of PMMA β process in the blends is proportional to the concentration of PMMA, suggesting that blending and intermolecular hydrogen bonding do not modify the local intramolecular motion. The α process, however, represents the segmental motions of both components and becomes slower with increasing PVPh concentration because of the higher Tg. This leads to well‐defined α and β relaxations in the blends above the corresponding Tg, which cannot be reliably resolved in neat PMMA without ambiguous curve deconvolution. The PMMA β process still follows an Arrhenius temperature dependence above Tg, but with an activation energy larger than that observed below Tg because of increased relaxation amplitude. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Enthalpy relaxation of epoxy–diamine thermosets of different crosslink lengths (CLL) has been studied by DSC. The epoxy resins based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A were cured with ethylenediamine (FEDA), and diamines of polyoxypropylene of 2.6 and 5.6 oxypropylene units, named FJ230 and FJ400, respectively. As was expected, increasing the CLL decreases the glass transition temperature Tg from 121°C (FEDA) to 47°C (FJ400). Aging experiments at Tg − 20 K for each resin permit the determination of the enthalpy loss, the relaxation rate per decade (βH), and the nonlinearity parameter, x. The apparent activation energy, Δh*, and the nonexponentiality parameter β are found for each resin from intrinsic cycles in which the sample is heated at 10 K min−1 following cooling at various rates through the glass transition region. An increase of CLL is related to an increase of βH, and of the nonlinearity parameter. In agreement with the general trend for thermoplastic polymers, the increase of the parameter x is correlated with a decrease of Δh* and with an increase in the nonexponentiality parameter. Application of the Adam–Gibbs (AG) theory reveals that the parameters B and Tf/T2 increase with CLL, corresponding to a decrease of the nonlinear behavior of the glassy epoxies. However, the T2 values calculated in this way appear unrealistic, and the alternative assumption that T2 = Tg −51.6 K, making use of the “universal” WLF constant, leads to a much smaller variation of B, which nevertheless still increases with CLL. From a consideration of the minimum number of configurations required for a cooperative rearrangement, it is argued that the elementary activation energy Δμ increases, and the minimum size of the cooperatively rearranging region decreases as CLL increases. This is consistent with the relaxation process becoming more cooperative as the CLL decreases, as is suggested by the decrease in the value of β. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Micromechanical string resonators are used as a highly sensitive tool for the detection of glass transition (Tg or α relaxation) and sub‐Tg (β relaxation) temperatures of polystyrene (PS) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The characterization technique allows for a fast detection of mechanical relaxations of polymers with only few nanograms of sample in a quasi‐static condition. The polymers are spray coated on one side of silicon nitride (SiN) microstrings. These are pre‐stressed suspended structures clamped on both ends to a silicon frame. The resonance frequency of the microstrings is then monitored as a function of increasing temperature. α and β relaxations in the polymer affect the net static tensile stress of the microstring and result in measureable local frequency slope maxima. Tg of PS and PMMA is detected at 91 ±2°C and 114 ±2°C, respectively. The results match well with the glass transition values of 93.6°C and 114.5°C obtained from differential scanning calorimetry of PS and PMMA, respectively. The β relaxation temperatures are detected at 30 ± 2°C and 33 ± 2°C for PS and PMMA which is in accordance with values reported in literature. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. We have investigated the effect of sample preparation on the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of thin films of polystyrene (PS). By preparing and measuring the glass‐transition temperature Tg of multilayered polymer films, we are able to assess the contribution of the spincoating process to the reduced Tg values often reported for thin PS films. We find that it is possible to determine a Tg even on the first heating cycle, and that by the third heating cycle (a total annealing time of 15 min at T = 393 K) the Tg value has reached a steady state. By comparing multilayered versus single layered films we find that the whole Tg depends only on the total film thickness, and not on the thickness of the individual layers. These results strongly suggest that the spincasting process does not contribute significantly to Tg reductions in thin polymer films. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The variation of the indentation hardness of a high molecular weight poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) subjected to CO2 and Ar at high pressure was measured in situ. The samples were subjected to gas exposure for 3 h at 40 °C before a conical indenter of an included angle at 105 °, with a fixed load of 0.237 kg, was applied for a loading time of 60 s. The data show that both CO2 and Ar reduce the hardness of PMMA to a comparable extent at low pressures. The hardness of PMMA subjected to Ar indicates a minimum at about 4 MPa and then increases. CO2 produced a monotone decreasing trend in hardness in the pressure range studied, and the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) was achieved at about 6.0 MPa. The change in hardness is attributed to plasticization of the polymer matrix that is more extensive for CO2. The relationship between the change in hardness for this PMMA subjected to high‐pressure CO2, the corresponding change in the Tg, and the associated swelling of the polymer is discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A phenylquinoxaline (PQ) AB monomer mixture was treated with monofunctional and difunctional end‐capping agents and with and without a coupling agent to afford phenylethynyl‐terminated linear PQ oligomers. The resulting PQ oligomers were soluble in common organic solvents and had intrinsic viscosities (IVs) of 0.21–0.30 dL/g. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the diphenylethynyl‐end‐capped PQ oligomer on both sides increased the most, from 215 °C (before curing) to 251 °C (after curing). The PQ AB2 monomer, which acted as both a coupling agent and a monomer for the hyperbranched polymer, was treated with an AB monomer and end‐capping agents to afford phenylethynyl‐terminated hyperbranched polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQs). They were also soluble in common organic solvents, had IVs of 1.00–1.65 dL/g and Tg's of 251–253 °C, and underwent exothermic cure with maxima around 412–442 °C. The Tg's of the cured hyperbranched PPQs ranged from 258 to 261 °C, depending on the number of phenylethynyl groups on the surface. After further curing, they displayed a Tg of 316 °C in one sample and turned into a fully crosslinked network. The dynamic melt viscosities of a linear oligomer (IV = 0.21 dL/g), a hyperbranched sample (IV = 1.00 dL/g), and a linear reference PPQ (IV = 1.29 dL/g) were compared with respect to the processing temperature. The PQ oligomer and hyperbranched PPQ had low melt viscosities. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 6318–6330, 2004  相似文献

The calorimetric glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and transition width were measured over the full composition range for solvent–solvent mixtures of o‐terphenyl with tricresyl phosphate and with dibutyl phthalate and for polymer–solvent mixtures of polystyrene with three dialkyl phthalates. Tg shifted smoothly to higher temperatures with the addition of the component with the higher Tg for both sets of solvent–solvent mixtures. The superposition of the differential scanning calorimetry traces showed almost no composition dependence for the width of the transition region. In contrast, the composition dependence of Tg in polymer–solvent mixtures was different at high and low polymer concentrations, and two distinct Tg's were observed at intermediate compositions. These results were interpreted in terms of the local length scale and associated local composition variations affecting Tg. The possible implications of these results for the dynamics of miscible polymer blends were examined. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1155–1163, 2004  相似文献

Branched and linear nonmigratory internal plasticizers attached to PVC by a pendant triazole linkage were synthesized and investigated. Copper-free azide-alkyne thermal cycloaddition was employed to covalently bind triazole-based phthalate mimics to PVC. To systematically investigate the effect of plasticizer structure on glass transition temperature, several architectural motifs were explored. Free volume theory was considered when designing many of these internal plasticizers: hexyl-tethers were utilized to generate additional space between the triazole-phthalate mimic and the polymer backbone. Miscibility of these triazole-plasticizers in PVC is important: variation of the ester moieties on the triazole possessing alkyl and/or poly(ethylene oxide) chains produced a wide range of glass transition temperatures (Tg): from anti-plasticizing 96 °C, to highly efficient plasticized materials exhibiting Tg values as low as −42 °C. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Molecular composites were prepared from several types of ionically modified, poly(p‐phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) dispersed in a poly(4‐vinylpyridine) matrix. Optical clarity tests indicated that the component polymers of the composite were miscible, at least at low concentrations of the rodlike reinforcement. In composites containing ionic PPTA, where ionic sulfonate groups were attached as side groups either to PPTA chains or to PPTA anion chains, the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) was increased by l0 °C or more, at 5 wt % reinforcement. At concentrations of 10–15 wt % of the ionic polymer, Tg values leveled off or decreased slightly. This suggested that some aggregation of the rigid‐rod molecules occurred. In composites containing ionic PPTA, where the ionic sulfonate groups were directly attached to the phenylene rings of PPTA chains, not only was Tg shifted significantly to higher temperatures, but the rubbery plateau modulus retained high values up to temperatures of 250 °C or above. Observed effects were considered to be the result of strong ionic interactions between the ionic reinforcement polymer and the polar matrix polymer. The possible effects of the counterion on Tg and the storage modulus are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 1110–1117, 2002  相似文献
