2,2-Dibutyl-2-stanna-1,3-dioxepane (DSDOP) was used as cyclic initiator for the polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC). The polymerizations were either conducted in concentrated chlorobenzene solution at 50 and 80°C or in bulk at 60 and 120°C. With monomer/initiator ratios ≤100 the conversion was complete within 2 h at 80°C and within 12 h at 50°C. Variation of the reaction time revealed that the rapid polymerization is followed by a relatively rapid (backbiting) degradation even at 80°C. The polymerizations in bulk at 60°C were somewhat slower than those at 80°C in solution, but the influence of degradation reactions was less pronounced. With optimized reaction time the number average molecular weight (Mn) roughly parallels the monomer/initiator ratio and Mn's up to 100,000 were obtained. In contrast to a classical living polymerization broader polydispersities (1.5–1.7) were found. In the case of 5,5-dimethyltrimethylene carbonate rapid degradation and chain transfer reactions prevented the formation of high molecular weight polymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Substituted and unsubstituted benzenesulfonic acid cyclohexyl esters (1–7) were synthesized, and their possibility as latent thermal initiators in the cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) was examined to develop novel non‐salt type latent cationic initiators. Thermal decomposition of cyclohexyl p‐nitrobenzenesulfonate (2) in C6D6 at 80°C proceeded to exclusively afford cyclohexene as well as p‐nitrobenzenesulfonic acid. Cationic polymerization of IBVE with 1 mol % of an arenesulfonate (1–6) in bulk was carried out at 40–100°C for 12 h. No polymerization took place below 50°C, while the consumption of IBVE depending on both the polymerization temperature and the structure of the arenesulfonates was observed above 60°C. The obtained polyIBVEs showed bimodal GPC curves in several cases, revealing the intervention of two independent propagation species in the polymerization. The cationic polymerization of IBVE with cyclohexyl 2,4,6‐triisopropylbenzenesulfonate (7) at 80°C confirmed the acceleration effect of bulkiness on the polymerization rate. It was concluded that the polymerization was largely dependent on both electronic and steric factors of the aryl groups of the initiators which were directly related to the stability of the sulfonate anions. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Radical polymerizations of styrene in the presence of C60 have been conducted at 90°C in benzene using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The behaviors of C60 are investigated by monitoring BPO concentration, C60 content, and polymerization time. It is found that C60 acts like a radical absorber which multiply absorbs primary radicals from BPO and propagating radicals. Therefore, in the presence of C the yield and molecular weight decrease significantly. However, the molecular weight distribution is narrowed down by its coupling characteristics. At the beginning of the reaction, owing to the radical-absorbing effect of C60, it makes the chain-propagation restricted. However, the number of polystyrene chains added to C60 increases with polymerization time. Direct dilatometric experiment proves that C60 is mainly as inhibitor for radical polymerization of styrene by benzoyl peroxide. Besides, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers increases with increasing content of C60. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 2969–2975, 1999  相似文献

4‐Methoxycarbonyloxybenzoic acid (MCOBA) and 6‐methoxycarbonyloxy‐2‐naphthoic acid (MCONA) were synthesized as new monomers to replace 4‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) and 6‐acetoxy‐2‐naphthoic acid (ANA) in the synthesis of liquid crystal polymers. MCOBA and MCONA (73 : 27, mol : mol) were reacted at temperatures ranging from 220 to 325°C in bulk. The copolymer (Mw = 14,200) has a Tg (90°C) and a Tm (249°C). The MCOBA/MCONA copolymer is lighter in color than the ABA/ANA copolymer. During the copolymerization, six by‐products were collected, isolated, and analyzed, and their formation was investigated. The copolymerization rate was studied by the measurement of evolved carbon dioxide. The polymerization of MCOBA and MCONA is cleaner and faster than the polymerization of ABA and ANA. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 1703–1707, 1999  相似文献

The polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) initiated by SOCl2 in benzene and nitrobenzene solvents was studied at 32°C. Rp is first order with respect to SOCl2 concentration and also to NVC concentration up to a certain NVC concentration, after which it falls. Rate and the molecular weight increase with increasing dielectric constant of the medium. The rate and molecular weight are depressed by the addition of amines, thiophene, and water. The degree of polymerization is independent of SOCl2 and NVC concentration. A conventional cationic mechanism has been suggested, and a suitable kinetic scheme has been proposed in conformity with the findings.  相似文献

Thermal polymerizations of alkali 4-(2-bromoethyl)benzoates (2-BEBAs) were investigated. The polymerization of the lithium salt at 220°C for 2 h under reduced pressure in bulk, followed by esterification, produced poly(methyl 4-vinylbenzoate), having a number-average molecular weight (M̄n) of 9500 in a 54% yield. Thus, elimination of hydrogen bromide to form a double bond occurred, followed by vinyl polymerization. In contrast, polymerization of the potassium salt at 200°C for 2 h afforded poly(oxycarbonyl-1,4-phenylene-ethylene) (polyester 1), having an inherent viscosity of 0.19 dL g−1 in a 95% yield: i.e., polycondensation proceeded to afford the polyester. Reaction of the sodium salt at 220°C for 2 h produced polyester 1 having M̄n of 4000 in a 28% yield as well as 4-vinylbenzoic acid in a 9% yield. In the reaction of the sodium salt, both polycondensation and double bond formation occurred. Thus, these polymerizations depended on the counter cations of 2-BEBAs. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new series of 1,1,3,3‐tetraethylisoindoline‐2‐oxyl (TEISO)‐based alkoxyamines was prepared. The half‐lives for thermal dissociation indicated that the most sterically congested cumyl‐TEISO alkoxymine had the greatest potential as an initiator for the polymerization of monomers at lower temperatures. The polymerization of styrene at 110 °C gave a linear evolution of Mn with conversion in the early stages. Further evidence for the “living” nature was given by the polydispersities of the polymers that remained low (Mw/Mn = 1.13–1.27) throughout the polymerization (up to 80% conversion). No polymer was formed for the styrene system in a reasonable time below 100 °C. High‐performance liquid chromatographic/mass spectrometric investigations of the distribution of trapped oligomers containing one to nine monomer units formed at 60 °C revealed that the trapping of oligomeric cumyl–styryl radicals by TEISO is irreversible at this temperature. Methyl methacrylate polymerized with cumyl‐TEISO at 60–70 °C, although the initial high rates of polymerization soon decreased to zero at low conversions (10–15%), and the high polydispersities (Mw/Mn = 1.42–1.73) indicated significant side reactions. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polymerization of N‐(1‐phenylethylaminocarbonyl)methacrylamide (PEACMA) with dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) was kinetically studied in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The overall activation energy of the polymerization was estimated to be 84 kJ/mol. The initial polymerization rate (Rp) is given by Rp = k[MAIB]0.6[PEACMA]0.9 at 60 °C, being similar to that of the conventional radical polymerization. The polymerization system involved electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopically observable propagating poly(PEACMA) radical under the actual polymerization conditions. ESR‐determined rate constants of propagation and termination were 140 L/mol s and 3.4 × 104 L/mol s at 60 °C, respectively. The addition of LiCl accelerated the polymerization in N,N‐dimethylformamide but did not in DMSO. The copolymerization of PEACMA(M1) and styrene(M2) with MAIB in DMSO at 60 °C gave the following copolymerization parameters; r1 = 0.20, r2 = 0.51, Q1 = 0.59, and e1 = +0.70. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The copolymerization of acenaphthylene (ANA) with N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) was investigated at 60° in the melt with 1% AIBN and in benzene solution at 20° with gamma ray initiation. In the melt at 60°, the polymerization rate gradually decreases with the amount of NVC in the mixture. The following reactivity ratios were determined: rNVC = 0.12; rANA = 7.0. The copolymers have a fairly narrow distribution of compositions but contain small amounts of poly NVC. Gamma ray initiation at 20° gives rise to the free radical copolymer together with significant amounts of poly NVC which results from a cationic mechanism. In addition, acenaphthylene cyclodimerizes in the process.  相似文献

Norbornene polymerization using the commercially available and inexpensive catalyst system, cyclopentadienylzirconium trichloride (CpZrCl3) and isobutyl‐modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), were carried out over a wide range of polymerization temperatures and monomer concentrations. For the CpZrCl3 catalyst system activated by aluminoxane with a 40 mol % methyl group and a 60 mol % isobutyl group (MMAO40/60), the polymerization temperature and monomer concentration significantly affected the molecular weight (Mn) of the obtained polymer and the catalytic activity. With an increase in the polymerization temperature from 0 to 27 °C, the catalytic activity and Mn increased, but these values dramatically decreased with the increasing polymerization temperature from 27 to 70 °C, meaning that the most suitable temperature was 27 °C. The CpZrCl3/MMAO40/60 ([Al]/[Zr] = 1000) catalyst system with the [NB] of 2.76 mol L?1 at 27 °C showed the highest activity of 145 kg molZr?1 h?1 and molecular weight of 211,000 g mol?1. The polymerization using the CpZrCl3/MMAO40/60 catalyst system proceeds through the vinyl addition mechanism to produce atactic polynorbornene, which was soluble in chloroform, toluene, and 1,2‐dichlorobenzene, but insoluble in methanol. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel phosphate monomer, Op‐(methacryloyloxymethyl)benzyl O,O‐diethyl phosphate (MDP) was synthesized by the reaction of diethyl phosphorochloridate with 1,4‐benzenedimethanol, followed by the reaction with methacryloyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine. The radical polymerization of MDP and copolymerization with methyl methacrylate were carried out in the presence of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (3 mol %) in dimethylacetamide at 60 °C for 20 h to afford phosphate‐pendant polymers. The polymerization of glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE) was carried out with the phosphate‐pendant polymer as an initiator in the presence of ZnCl2. The polymerization did not proceed below 90 °C but rapidly proceeded above 90 °C to afford polyGPE. The phosphate‐pendant polymer served as a good thermally latent polymeric initiator. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3365–3370, 2001  相似文献

Cationic ring-opening polymerization behavior of a seven-membered cyclic sulfite ( 1 ) was examined. 1 was prepared by the reaction of 1,4-butanediol with SOCl2 in 58% yield. The cationic polymerization of 1 was carried out at 0, 25, 60, or 100°C with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH), methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TfOMe), BF3 · OEt2, SnCl4, methyl p-toluenesulfonate (TsOMe), or MeI as an initiator in bulk under a nitrogen atmosphere to afford the polymer with M̄n 1000–10,400. The order of activities of the initiators for 1 was as follows, TfOH ≅ TfOMe > SnCl4 > BF3 · OEt2 > TsOMe ≅ MeI. The polymerization of 1 with TfOMe afforded a poly(sulfite) below 25°C, but afforded a polymer containing an ether unit at 60°C, which was formed by a desulfoxylation. The higher the activity of the initiator was, the more easily the desulfoxylation occurred. We expected volume expansion on polymerization because cyclic sulfites have large dipole moment values, but it turned out that 1 showed 4.34% shrinkage on polymerization. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Summary: The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) random copolymerization of N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) and vinyl acetate (VAc) was carried out using s-benzyl-o-ethyl dithiocarbonate (BED) as the chain transfer agent and 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator in 1,4-dioxane solution at 70 °C. The polymerization showed the characteristics of ‘living’ free radical polymerization behaviors: first order kinetics, linear relationships between molecular weight and conversion, and narrow polydispersity of the polymers. The reactivity ratios of NVC and VAc were calculated via the Kelen–Tudos (KT) and non-linear error in variable (EVM) methods and showed as r1 = 1.938 ± 0.191, r2 = 0.116 ± 0.106. The thermal behavior of the copolymers with different content of NVC and VAc was investigated by DSC and TGA. The results showed that the introduction of a VAc segment into copolymer significantly reduced the Tg of the NVC homopolymers. FT-IR spectra, fluorescence spectra, and cyclic voltammetric behavior of these copolymers were also measured and compared with those of NVC homopolymers. The copolymers showed similar oxidative behavior to the NVC homopolymer. However, there was only one reductive potential peak shown for the copolymers at about 0.058 V.  相似文献

We describe the synthesis and cationic photopolymerization of a C60 derivative bearing a 2,4,6‐tris(epoxynonyloxy)phenyl moiety (FB9ox). Rheological analysis of monomer indicates that temperature of 130 °C yields sufficiently low viscosity for polymerization. A thin film of the liquid monomer has been cationically photopolymerized with a photoinitiator system of curcumin and p‐(octyloxyphenyl)phenyliodonium hexafluoroantimonate, which harvests 424 nm light instead of commonly used ultraviolet light. The degree of polymerization was determined with ATR‐IR. The reaction is the first recorded photopolymerization of a fullerene derivative thin film. The polymer exhibits good mechanical and chemical stabilities. The polymerization can also be achieved by annealing at 150 °C without illumination, but with a smaller degree of polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Methyl benzyloxyiminoacetate (MBOIA), a glyoxylic oxime ether, revealed different behaviors depending on the kinds of monomers used in the radical polymerization. MBOIA served as a retarder for styrene (St) and an inhibitor for vinyl acetate, whereas it showed little effect on the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The retardation effect of MBOIA on the polymerization of St with dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) was examined in detail in benzene. The rate constant (kx) of the reaction of MBOIA with polystyrene (PS) radical was 92 L/mol s at 50 °C, 112 L/mol s at 60 °C, and 143 L/mol s at 70 °C, indicating that the reactivity of MBOIA toward PS radical is less than that of St by a factor of about 3. The Arrhenius plot of kx gave an activation energy of 20.3 kJ/mol. A nitrogen‐centered radical of a stationary state was observed by electron spin resonance (ESR) in the polymerization of St with MAIB at 60 °C in benzene in the presence of MBOIA, which is assignable to the radical (MBOIA ·) formed by addition of PS radical to MBOIA. The stationary MBOIA · concentration increased with increasing MBOIA concentration and then tended to be saturated at high concentrations. The rate constant of termination between MBOIA · radicals was 1.87 × l05 L/mol s at 60 °C with ESR. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 2772–2781, 2002  相似文献

The polymerization reactivity of isobutylene/SnCl4 mixtures in the absence of polar solvent, was investigated in a temperature interval from −78 to 60 °C. The mixture is nonreactive below −20 °C but slow polymerization proceeds from −20 to 20 °C with the initial rate r0 of the order 10−5 mol · l−1 · s−1. The rate of the process increases with increasing temperature up to ∼10−2 mol · l−1 · s−1 at 60 °C. Logarithmic plots of r0 and n versus 1/T exhibit a break in the range from 20 to 35 °C. Activation energy is positive with values E = 21.7 ± 4.2 kJ/mol in the temperature interval from −20 to 35 °C and E = 159.5 ± 4.2 kJ/mol in the interval from 35 to 60 °C. The values of activation enthalpy difference of molecular weights in these temperature intervals are ΔHMn = −12.7 ± 4.2 kJ/mol and −38.3 ± 4.2 kJ/mol, respectively. The polymerization proceeds quantitatively, the molecular weights of products are relatively high, n = 1500–2500 at 35 °C and about 600 at 60 °C. It is assumed that initiation proceeds via [isobutylene · SnCl4] charge transfer complex which is thermally excited and gives isobutylene radical‐cations. Oxygen inhibits the polymerization from −20 to 20 °C. Possible role of traces of water at temperatures above 20 °C is discussed. It was verified by NMR analysis that only low molecular weight polyisobutylenes are formed with high contents of exo‐ terminal unsaturated structures. In addition to standard unsaturated groups, new structures were detected in the products. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 1568–1579, 2000  相似文献

The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) promoted by heterogeneous initiation system (ethyl‐2‐halopropionate (EPN‐X)–CuX–2,2′‐bipyridyl (bpy), where X = Br or Cl) is studied in detail. The results show that ethyl‐2‐bromopropionate (EPN‐Br) is an efficient initiator as expected, and that CuCl–bpy, instead of CuBr–bpy, is a better catalyst for the controlled polymerization of MMA. The solvents with a high value of dielectric constant (ε) will lead to fast initiation and narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD). As a result, the controlled, living polymerization of MMA with EPN‐Br–CuCl–bpy can be got in ethyl acetate (EAc) at 100°C and in acetonitrile at 80°C. All results suggest that the initiation reaction is a controlling step in the controlled polymerization of MMA. The relationship between the UV spectra of CuCl–bpy and the performances of the polymerization in EAc or acetonitrile suggest that the formation of bis‐bpy complex, [Cubpy2]X, will lead to fast initiation and good control of the polymerization. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel polyesteramides were synthesized by copolymerization in bulk of 5-(4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)-1-pentanol and various cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydrides at temperatures varying between 120 and 200°C. The polymers resulting from polycondensation were characterized by means of 1H–NMR, FTIR, MALDI–TOF–MS, SEC, and DSC. The glass transition temperatures, Tg, of the copolymers were varied between −28 and +31°C as a function of the anhydride type. Molecular weights, Mw, were dependent on reaction temperature, reaction time, and anhydride type. Spectroscopic investigation of reaction products and esteramide model compounds provided evidence for imide by-product formation, which accounts for the low degree of polymerization. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Both the rac- and meso-dinuclear ansa-zirconocene catalysts (μ-C12H8{[SiPh(Ind)2]ZrCl2}2) were prepared by a coupling reaction between 2 equiv of diindenylphenylchlorosilane (rac- and meso-isomers) and 1 equiv of p-dilithiobiphenyl in diethyl ether at −80°C, followed by a successive reaction with ZrCl4 · 2THF in THF at −78°C. Polymerizations of ethene and propene were conducted in a 1 dm3 high-pressure glass reactor equipped with a mechanical stirrer at 60, 80, 100, 120, and 150°C using methylalumoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst and toluene or decahydronaphthalene as the solvent. Copolymerization of ethene and 1-octene was also checked in brief. For ethene polymerization, the meso-catalyst was found to be more active, which displayed an extremely high activity to give linear polyethene with a high molecular weight and a narrow molar mass distribution (MMD). The apparent activity increased monotonously with rising polymerization temperature from 60°C up to 150°C, indicating that the active species are stable even at a high temperature. On the other hand, both the rac- and meso-catalysts showed very poor activities for propene polymerization. However, copolymerization of ethene and 1-octene proceeded at a high speed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. A Polym. Chem. 36: 2269–2274, 1998  相似文献

A cholesterol‐based liquid crystal monomer, diethylene glycol cholesteryl ether acrylate (DEGCholA), has been successfully polymerized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for the first time. Appropriate experimental conditions to control the polymerization of DEGCholA have been investigated using a model initiator (ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or toluene at 60 °C. Well‐controlled ATRP of DEGCholA was obtained using N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as ligand in THF at 60 °C. These conditions were then applied to initiate the ATRP of DEGCholA from multifunctional macroinitiators based on dextran. Using a protection/deprotection synthetic scheme, novel graft glycopolymers (Dex‐g‐PDEGCholA) have been synthesized. The mesomorphic properties of DEGCholA, PDEGCholA, and Dex‐g‐PDEGCholA have been studied by thermal polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X‐ray scattering. PDEGCholA and Dex‐g‐PDEGCholA show an interdigitated smectic A phase (SmAd) between Tg (~30 °C) and around 170 °C. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
