Copolymers of cholesteryl 6‐methacryloyloxy hexanoate and (1‐pyrenemethyl) 6‐methacryloyloxy hexanoate were prepared by free radical polymerization, with the amount of (1‐pyrenemethyl) 6‐methacryloyloxy hexanoate units (fPy) in the polymers ranging from 0–100 mol‐%. The copolymers with fPy ≤ 20.0 mol‐% show distinct liquid‐crystalline (LC) phase behavior. According to the fluorescence of pyrene in these copolymer LC films, each pyrene moiety is individually incorporated into the LC domain, and the interaction between the pyrene moieties is restricted.  相似文献

For the preparation of core‐shell nanoparticles containing functional nanomaterials, a photo‐cross‐linkable amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(2‐cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEG‐PCEMA‐PMMA), was synthesized. This triblock copolymer was then used to encapsulate Au nanoparticles or pyrene. The triblock copolymer of PEG‐b‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐b‐PMMA (PEG‐PHEMA‐PMMA) (Mn = 15,800 g/mol, Mw/Mn = 1.58) was first synthesized by activators generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. Its middle block was then functionalized with cinnamoyl chloride. The degrees of polymerization of the PEG, PHEMA, and PMMA blocks were 45, 13, and 98, respectively. PMMA‐tethered Au nanoparticles (with an average diameter of 3.0 nm) or pyrene was successfully encapsulated within the PEG‐PCEMA‐PMMA micelles. The intermediary layers of the micelles were then cross‐linked by UV irradiation. The spherical structures of the PEG‐PCEMA‐PMMA micelles containing Au nanoparticles or pyrene were not changed by the photo‐cross‐linking process and they showed excellent colloidal stability. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly[2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine]s (PMPCs) with one pendant cholesteryl moiety at the polymer end (PMPC‐Chol‐I and PMPC‐Chol‐II) and two pendant cholesteryl moieties at both polymer ends as terminal groups (PMPC‐2Chol‐I and PMPC‐2Chol‐II) were prepared by the radical polymerization of 2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine initiated with 4,4′‐azobis[(3‐cholesteryl)‐4‐cyanopentanoate] in the presence of 2‐mercaptoethanol or thiocholesterol as chain‐transfer reagents, respectively. The self‐organization of PMPC‐Chol and PMPC‐2Chol was analyzed with fluorescence and 1H NMR measurements. The critical micelle concentrations of PMPC‐Chol‐I with a degree of polymerization (Pn) of 91 and of PMPC‐2Chol‐I with a Pn value of 165 were 250 and 27 mg L?1, respectively. The blood compatibility of PMPC‐2Chol was evaluated from the Michaelis constant (Km) for the enzymatic reaction of thrombin and a synthetic substrate, S‐2238, in the presence of PMPC‐2Chol. Km was 0.07, 0.05, and 0.56 for PMPC‐2Chol‐I with Pn = 165, PMPC‐2Chol‐II with Pn = 38, and PMPC (an intrinsic viscosity of 0.54 dL g?1) initiated with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronnitrile in the absence of chain transfer agent, respectively. A mixture of PMPC‐2Chol‐II and cholesterol as a drug model formed a lamellar type of complex with an interplanar spacing of d = 35.2 Å. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Styrene (St) was polymerized with α,α′‐bis(2′,2′,6′,6′‐tetramethyl‐1′‐piperidinyloxy)‐1,4‐diethylbenzene ( 1 ) as an initiator (bulk, [St]/] 1 ] = 570) at 120 °C for 5.0 h to obtain polystyrene having 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidiloxy moieties on both sides of the chain ends ( 2 ) with a number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of 14,300 and a polydispersity index [weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight (Mw/Mn)] of 1.14. 4‐Vinylbenzyl glucoside peracetate ( 3a ) was polymerized with 2 as a macromolecular initiator and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as an accelerator in chlorobenzene at 120 °C. The polymerization with the [ 3a ]/[ 2 ]/[DCP] ratio of 30/1/1.2 for 5 h afforded a product in a yield of 73%; it was followed by purification with preparative size exclusion chromatography to provide the ABA triblock copolymer containing the pendant acetyl glucose on both sides of the chain ends ( 4a ; Mn = 21,000, Mw/Mn = 1.16). Similarly, the polymerization of 4‐vinylbenzyl maltohexaoside peracetate produced the ABA triblock copolymer containing the pendant acetyl maltohexaose on both side of the chain end ( 4b ; Mn = 31,800, Mw/Mn = 1.11). Polymers 4a and 4b were modified by deacetylation into amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers containing the pendant glucose and maltohexaose as hydrophilic segment, 5a and 5b , respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiarm star‐branched polymers based on poly(styrene‐b‐isobutylene) (PS‐PIB) block copolymer arms were synthesized under controlled/living cationic polymerization conditions using the 2‐chloro‐2‐propylbenzene (CCl)/TiCl4/pyridine (Py) initiating system and divinylbenzene (DVB) as gel‐core‐forming comonomer. To optimize the timing of isobutylene (IB) addition to living PS⊕, the kinetics of styrene (St) polymerization at −80°C were measured in both 60 : 40 (v : v) methyl cyclohexane (MCHx) : MeCl and 60 : 40 hexane : MeCl cosolvents. For either cosolvent system, it was found that the polymerizations followed first‐order kinetics with respect to the monomer and the number of actively growing chains remained invariant. The rate of polymerization was slower in MCHx : MeCl (kapp = 2.5 × 10−3 s−1) compared with hexane : MeCl (kapp = 5.6 × 10−3 s−1) ([CCl]o = [TiCl4]/15 = 3.64 × 10−3M; [Py] = 4 × 10−3M; [St]o = 0.35M). Intermolecular alkylation reactions were observed at [St]o = 0.93M but could be suppressed by avoiding very high St conversion and by setting [St]o ≤ 0.35M. For St polymerization, kapp = 1.1 × 10−3 s−1 ([CCl]o = [TiCl4]/15 = 1.82 × 10−3M; [Py] = 4 × 10−3M; [St]o = 0.35M); this was significantly higher than that observed for IB polymerization (kapp = 3.0 × 10−4 s−1; [CCl]o = [Py] = [TiCl4]/15 = 1.86 × 10−3M; [IB]o = 1.0M). Blocking efficiencies were higher in hexane : MeCl compared with MCHx : MeCl cosolvent system. Star formation was faster with PS‐PIB arms compared with PIB homopolymer arms under similar conditions. Using [DVB] = 5.6 × 10−2M = 10 times chain end concentration, 92% of PS‐PIB arms (Mn,PS = 2600 and Mn,PIB = 13,400 g/mol) were linked within 1 h at −80°C with negligible star–star coupling. It was difficult to achieve complete linking of all the arms prior to the onset of star–star coupling. Apparently, the presence of the St block allows the PS‐PIB block copolymer arms to be incorporated into growing star polymers by an additional mechanism, namely, electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS), which leads to increased rates of star formation and greater tendency toward star–star coupling. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of well‐defined graft copolymers with a polyallene‐based backbone and polystyrene side chains were synthesized by the combination of living coordination polymerization of 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadien‐4‐ol and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene. Poly(alcohol) with polyallene repeating units were prepared via 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadien‐4‐ol by living coordination polymerization initiated by [(η3‐allyl)NiOCOCF3]2 firstly, followed by transforming the pendant hydroxyl groups into halogen‐containing ATRP initiation groups. Grafting‐from route was employed in the following step for the synthesis of the well‐defined graft copolymer: polystyrene was grafted to the backbone via ATRP of styrene. The cleaved polystyrene side chains show a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.06). This kind of graft copolymer is the first example of graft copolymer via allene derivative and styrenic monomer. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined amphiphilic polymethylene‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) (PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA) triblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation, ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OH; Mn = 1100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09) were produced by polyhomologation followed by oxidation. Then, the PM‐b‐PCL (Mn = 10,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.27) diblock copolymers were synthesized via ROP of ε‐caprolactone using PM‐OH as macroinitiator and stannous octanoate (Sn(Oct)2) as a catalyst. Subsequently, the macroinitiator transformed from PM‐b‐PCL in high conversion initiated ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) to construct PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PtBA triblock copolymers (Mn = 11,000–14,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.24–1.26). Finally, the PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA triblock copolymers were obtained via the hydrolysis of the PtBA segment in PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PtBA triblock copolymers. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Porous films of such triblock copolymers were fabricated by static breath‐figure method and observed by scanning electron microscope. The aggregates of PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA triblock copolymer were studied by transmission electron microscope. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Rigid‐rod poly(4′‐methyl‐2,5‐benzophenone) macromonomers were synthesized by Ni(0) catalytic coupling of 2,5‐dichloro‐4′‐methylbenzophenone and end‐capping agent 4‐chloro‐4′‐fluorobenzophenone. The macromonomers produced were labile to nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The molecular weight of poly(4′‐methyl‐2,5‐benzophenone) was controlled by varying the amount of the end‐capping agent in the reaction mixture. Glass‐transition temperatures of the macromonomers increased with increasing molecular weight and ranged from 117 to 213 °C. Substitution of the macromonomer end groups was determined to be nearly quantitative by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography. The polymerization of a poly(4′‐methyl‐2,5‐benzophenone) macromonomer [number‐average molecular weight (Mn) = 1.90 × 103 g/mol; polydispersity (Mw)/Mn = 2.04] with hydroxy end‐capped bisphenol A polyaryletherketone (Mn = 4.50 × 103 g/mol; Mw/Mn = 1.92) afforded an alternating multiblock copolymer (Mn = 1.95 × 104 g/mol; Mw/Mn = 6.02) that formed flexible, transparent films that could be creased without cracking. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of novel types of three‐armed poly(trans‐4‐hydroxy‐N‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L ‐proline)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PHpr‐b‐PCL) copolymers were successfully synthesized via melt block copolymerization of trans‐4‐hydroxy‐N‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L ‐proline (N‐CBz‐Hpr) and ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) with a trifunctional initiator trimethylolpropane (TMP) and stannous octoate (SnOct2) as a catalyst. For the homopolycondensation of N‐CBz‐Hpr with TMP initiator and SnOct2 catalyst, the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of prepolymer increases from 530 to 3540 g mol?1 with the molar ratio of monomer to initiator (3–30), and the molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) is between 1.25 to 1.32. These three‐armed prepolymer PHpr were subsequently block copolymerized with ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) in the presence of SnOct2 as a catalyst. The Mn of the copolymer increased from 2240 to 18,840 g mol?1 with the molar ratio (0–60) of ε‐CL to PHpr. These products were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), 1H NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. According to DSC, the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the three‐armed polymers depended on the molar ratio of monomer/initiator that were added. In vitro degradation of these copolymers was evaluated from weight‐loss measurements and the change of Mn and Mw/Mn. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined three‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) copolymers having different block lengths were synthesized via the combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, three‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) (Mn = 2490–7830 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.19–1.24) were synthesized via ROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) using tris(2‐hydroxyethyl)cynuric acid as three‐arm initiator and stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2) as a catalyst. Subsequently, the three‐arm macroinitiator transformed from such PCL in high conversion initiated ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBuA) to construct three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PtBuA copolymers (Mn = 10,900–19,570 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.14–1.23). Finally, the three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PAA copolymer was obtained via the hydrolysis of the PtBuA segment in three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PtBuA copolymers. A technique is described for the preparation of arborescent graft copolymers containing poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) segments. For this purpose, tert‐butyl methacrylate is first polymerized with 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐methylpentyllithium in tetrahydrofuran. The graft copolymers are obtained by addition of a solution of a bromomethylated polystyrene substrate to the living PtBMA macroanion solution. Copolymers incorporating either short (Mw ≈ 5000) or long (Mw ≈ 30,000) PtBMA side chains were prepared by grafting onto linear, comb‐branched (G0), G1, and G2 bromomethylated arborescent polystyrenes. Branching functionalities ranging from 9 to 4500 and molecular weights ranging from 8.8 × 104 to 6.3 × 107 were obtained for the copolymers, while maintaining a low apparent polydispersity index (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.14–1.25). Arborescent polystyrene‐graft‐poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) copolymers were obtained by hydrolysis of the tert‐butyl methacrylate units. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that the arborescent PMAA copolymers are more expanded than their linear PMAA analogues when neutralized with NaOH. This effect is attributed to the higher charge density in the branched arborescent copolymer structures. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 2335–2346, 2008  相似文献

A series of well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymer containing hydrophobic polyallene‐based backbone and hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl acrylate) (PDEAEA) side chains was synthesized by sequential living coordination polymerization of 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol (MHDO) and single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl acrylate (DEAEA). Ni‐catalyzed living coordination polymerization of MHDO was first performed in toluene to give a well‐defined double‐bond‐containing poly(6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadiene‐4‐ol) (PMHDO) homopolymer with a low polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.10). Next, 2‐chloropropionyl chloride was used for the esterification of pendant hydroxyls in every repeating unit of the homopolymer so that the homopolymer was converted to PMHDO‐Cl macroinitiator. Finally, SET‐LRP of DEAEA was initiated by the macroinitiator in tetrahydrofuran/H2O using CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system to afford well‐defined PMHDO‐g‐PDEAEA graft copolymers (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.22) through the grafting‐from strategy. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) was determined by ?uorescence spectroscopy with N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe and the micellar morphology was visualized by transmission electron microscopy. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined polymethylene‐block‐polystyrene (PM‐b‐PS) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation of ylides and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene. Trithiocarbonate‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐TTCB) (Mn = 1400 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09 and Mn = 2100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.20) were obtained via an esterification of S?1‐dodecyl‐S′‐(α,α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetate) trithiocarbonate with hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylene synthesized via polyhomologation of ylides followed by oxidation. Then, a series of PM‐b‐PS (Mn = 5500–34,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.12–1.25) diblock copolymers were obtained by RAFT polymerization of styrene using PM‐TTCB as a macromolecular chain‐transfer agent. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thiocarbonylthio end‐group of PM‐b‐PS was transformed into thiol group by aminolysis and confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. In addition, microfibers and microspheres of such diblock copolymers were fabricated by electrospinning process and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Pure exo‐functional norbornene monomers containing various chromophores such as fluorene, pyrene, and carbazole were successfully prepared via the Diels–Alder reaction and condensation reaction. The living ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a fluorene‐containing monomer, exo‐2‐(fluorene‐9‐ylcarboxymethyl)norborn‐5‐ene (exo‐1), was observed and confirmed by the formation of a diblock copolymer and a linear relationship between the number‐average molecular weight and [M]/[I] ratios ([M] = monomer concentration; [I] = initiator concentration). The synthesis and characteristics of novel fluorene‐containing polymers based on pure exo‐1 are reported with Grubbs catalyst I {RuCl2(CHPh)[P(C6H11)3]2} with a high molecular weight of 3.18 × 104 in 90 s ([M]/[I] = 100). However, the ROMP of pyrene‐ and carbazole‐containing monomers [exo‐5‐(pyrene methoxy carbonyl)bicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐ene and exo‐5‐(carbazole ethoxy carbonyl)bicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐ene, respectively] were carried out in a nonliving fashion. All the chromophore‐containing polymers showed excellent solubility in various organic solvents, particularly in chloroform, N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, and 1,2‐dichlorobenzene. The glass transition temperatures of polynorbornenes containing various chromophores were determined to be 80–109 °C (by differential scanning calorimetry) higher than that of ring‐opened polynorbornene (glass transition temperature = 35 °C), indicating that the incorporation of the pendant aromatic moieties (e.g., fluorene, pyrene, and carbazole) could enhance the transition temperature for segmental motions of polymer chains. The photoluminescence spectra of all polymer solutions showed a strong emission in the blue region of the visible spectra. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined amphiphilic polymethylene‐b‐poly (acrylicacid) diblock copolymers have been synthesized via a new strategy combining polyhomologation and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OH) with different molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained through the polyhomologation of dimethylsulfoxonium methylides following quantitative oxidation via trimethylamine‐N‐oxide dihydrate. Subsequently, polymethylene‐based macroinitiators (PM‐MIs Mn = 1,300 g mol?1 [Mw/Mn = 1.11] and Mn = 3,300 g mol?1 [Mw/Mn = 1.04]) are synthesized by transformation of terminal hydroxyl group of PM‐OH to α‐haloester in ~100% conversion. ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (t‐BuA) are then carried out using PM‐MIs as initiator to construct PM‐b‐P(t‐BuA) diblock copolymers with controllable molecular weight (Mn = 8,800–15,800 g mol?1 Mw/Mn = 1.04–1.09) and different weight ratio of PM/P(t‐BuA) segment (1:1.7–1:11.2). The amphiphilic PM‐b‐PAA diblock copolymers are finally prepared by hydrolysis of PM‐b‐P(t‐BuA) copolymers and their self‐assembly behavior in water is preliminarily investigated via the determination of critical micelle concentrations, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscope (TEM). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The interaction between poly(acrylic acid) polymers (PAA) of low‐ (2000 g/mol) and high‐ (450,000 g/mol) molecular weight (Mw) hydrophobically modified with pyrene (PAAMePy) and β‐ and γ‐cyclodextrins (β‐CD, γ‐CD) was investigated with fluorescent techniques. The interaction with β‐CD promotes little variation in the spectral and photophysical behavior of the polymer, whereas significant changes are observed upon addition of γ‐CD. The degree of inclusion (between the pyrene groups of the polymer and the cyclodextrins) is followed through the observation of the changes in the absorption, excitation (collected in the monomer and excimer emission regions) and emission (IE/IM ratio) spectra and from time‐resolved data. Within the studied range of γ‐CD concentration, the fluorescence decays of the long chain (high Mw) PAAMePy polymers were found tri‐exponential in the monomer and excimer emission regions in agreement with previous studies. In the case of the low Mw PAAMePy polymers, tri‐exponential decays were observed at the monomer and excimer emission wavelengths. However, when a γ‐CD concentration of 0.01 and 0.03 M is reached for, respectively, the low‐ and high‐labeled pyrene short chain (low Mw) polymers, the fluorescence decays in the excimer region become biexponential (two excimers) with no rising component, thus showing that all pyrene groups are encapsulated (and preassociated) into the γ‐CD cavity. In the case of the high Mw polymers, the addition of γ‐CD has been found to change the level of polymer interaction from pure intramolecular (water in the absence of cyclodextrin) to a coexistence of intra‐ with intermolecular interactions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A multiblock copolymer consisting of hard (poly(arylene ether sulfone)) and soft (poly(alkyl disulfide)) segments was successfully synthesized by oxidative coupling of the corresponding thiol‐terminated oligomers. Its structure was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The GPC data (Mw = 82,000, Mw/Mn = 2.7) and inherent viscosity (0.67 dL g−1) indicated the formation of a high‐molecular‐weight multiblock copolymer, while AFM and DSC indicated a microphase‐separated morphology. Tensile testing of the multiblock copolymer films showed a large elongation at break, which is characteristic of microphase‐separated hard/soft multiblock copolymers. Over 90% of the elongation at break of damaged samples (notched or cut) was recovered by UV irradiation. The elongation recovery was proportional to the UV irradiation energy, and the high recovery was achieved by relatively weak irradiation (<170 J cm−2). The high content of disulfide bonds in the multiblock copolymer resulted in a lower self‐healing energy. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymer, poly(6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadien‐4‐ol)‐g‐poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PMHDO‐g‐PDMAEMA), has been synthesized by the combination of living coordination polymerization, single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), and the grafting‐from strategy. PMHDO backbone containing double bonds and pendant hydroxyls was first prepared by [(η3‐allyl)NiOCOCF3]2‐initiated living coordination polymerization of 6‐methyl‐1,2‐heptadien‐4‐ol (MHDO) followed by treating the pendant hydroxyls with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride to give PMHDO‐Cl macroinitiator. SET‐LRP of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was performed in THF/H2O using PMHDO‐Cl as macroinitiator and CuCl/Me6TREN as catalytic system to afford the well‐defined PMHDO‐g‐PDMAEMA graft copolymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.28). The grafting density was as high as 92%. An azido‐containing functional monomer, 11‐azido‐undecanoyl methacrylate, was successfully polymerized via ambient temperature single electron transfer initiation and propagation through the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (SET‐RAFT) method. The polymerization behavior possessed the characteristics of “living”/controlled radical polymerization. The kinetic plot was first order, and the molecular weight of the polymer increased linearly with the monomer conversion while keeping the relatively narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.22). The complete retention of azido group of the resulting polymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR analysis. Retention of chain functionality was confirmed by chain extension with methyl methacrylate to yield a diblock copolymer. Furthermore, the side‐chain functionalized polymer could be prepared by one‐pot/one‐step technique, which is combination of SET‐RAFT and “click chemistry” methods. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The quasi‐living copolymerization of ethylene with propylene was achieved by using N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligated vanadium complex ( V3 , VOCl3[1,3‐(2,6‐iPr2C6H3)2(NCH?)2C:]) due to the stabilization of active center by the introduction of bulky and electron rich NHC ligand with bulky isopropyl substituents at the ortho positions of the phenyl rings. The weight‐average molecular weight (Mw) of the resulting copolymer increases linearly with its weight in 20 min. The ultra‐high‐molecular‐weight (UHMW) ethylene‐propylene copolymer (Mw = 1612 kg mol?1) can be synthesized with V3 /Et3Al2Cl3 catalytic system. The novel complex V4′ (VCl3[1,3‐(2,4,6‐Me3C6H2)2(NCH?)2C:]·2THF) was constructed by the introduction of two coordinated tetrahydrofuran molecules and decrease in steric hindrance at the ortho positions of phenyl rings. The UHMW ethylene‐propylene copolymer (Mw = 1167 kg mol?1) can also be synthesized by using V4′ /Et3Al2Cl3 catalytic system. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
