Two sets of styrene‐based semifluorinated block copolymers, one with a perfluoroether pendant group and another with a perfluoroalkyl group, were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Microphase separation of the block copolymers was established by small‐angle X‐ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC measurements also showed that the perfluoroether‐based polymer had a low glass‐transition temperature (?44 °C). Contact‐angle measurements indicated that the semifluorinated block copolymers had low surface energies (ca. 13 mJ/m2). These materials hold promise as low‐surface‐energy additives or surfactants for supercritical CO2 applications. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of poly(methyl acrylate)-block-poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PMA-b-PBLG) diblock copolymers, using atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl acrylate and living polymerization of gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxyanhydride (Glu-NCA) is described. Amido-amidate nickelacycle end groups were incorporated onto amino-terminated poly(methyl acrylates), and the resulting complexes were successfully used as macroinitiators for the growth of polypeptide segments. This method allows the controlled preparation of polypeptide-block-poly(methyl acrylate) diblock architectures with control over polypeptide chain length and without the formation of homopolypeptide contaminants.  相似文献

Well‐defined sulfonated polystyrene and block copolymers with n‐butyl acrylate (nBA) were synthesized by CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization. Neopentyl p‐styrene sulfonate (NSS) was polymerized with ethyl‐2‐bromopropionate initiator and CuBr catalyst with N,N,N′,N′‐pentamethylethyleneamine to give poly(NSS) (PNSS) with a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD < 1.12). PNSS was then acidified by thermolysis resulting in a polystyrene backbone with 100% sulfonic acid groups. Random copolymers of NSS and styrene with various composition ratios were also synthesized by copolymerization of NSS and styrene with different feed ratios (MWD < 1.11). Well defined block copolymers with nBA were synthesized by sequential polymerization of NSS from a poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA) precursor using CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization (MWD < 1.29). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study presents styrene emulsion polymerization initiated in aqueous media through an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) mechanism. The water-soluble initiator employed in this process has been synthesized by our team by reacting diethanolamine with α-bromoisobutyryl bromide. The complexation of CuBr was realized by using a bicomponent complexation system comprised of 2,2′-bipyridine and N,N,N′,N′,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine. The initiator ratio influence on the obtained emulsion was studied. The obtained latexes and polymer particles have been characterized by dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and gel permeation chromatography.  相似文献

Combination of coordination polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was applied to a novel synthesis of rod‐coil block copolymers. The procedure included the following steps: (1) monoesterification reaction of ethylene glycol with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide yielded a α‐bromo, ω‐hydroxy bifunctional initiator, (2) CpTiCl3 (bifunctional initiator) catalyst was prepared from a mixture of trichlorocyclopentadienyl titanium (CpTiCl3) and bifunctional initiator. Coordination polymerization of n‐butyl isocyanate initiated by such catalyst provided a well‐defined macroinitiator, poly(n‐butyl isocyanate)‐Br (PBIC‐Br), and (3) ATRP method of vinyl monomers using PBIC‐Br provided rod (PBIC)‐coil block copolymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. N-oxyl terminated vinylbenzyl chloride macromonomers, available via controlled free radical polymerization, were used to synthesize AB-block copolymers of vinylbenzyl chloride and styrene with low polydispersity and different block lengths and block length ratios. The vinylbenzyl chloride blocks were quantitatively converted into cationic polyelectrolytes by reactions with tertiary amines. The micellization of the synthesized amphiphilic cationic block copolymers was investigated using different techniques such as static light scattering, ultracentrifugation and size exclusion chromatography.  相似文献

Initiators for continuous activator regeneration atom transfer radical polymerization (ICAR ATRP) of acrylonitrile was first conducted at various ambient temperatures (30-45 ℃). The key to success is ascribed to the usage of an appropriate low temperature radical initiator (2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile)) and a high reactivity catalytic system (CuBr2/Me6TREN). The molar ratio of Cu catalyst tO AN as low as 1:20000 wa.s used to prepare well-defined polyacrylonitrile with controlled molecular weight and a narrow polydispersity index range of 1.08-1.30, while the monomer conversion was up to ca. 98%. The apparent activation energy of the polymerization was calculated to be 128.45 kJ/mol, suggesting that the polymerization strongly depended on reaction temperature. The very high chain-end functionality of the resultant polymer was confirmed by ^1H-NMR and GPC analyses as well as chain extension reaction.  相似文献

The synthesis of block copolymers consisting of a polyethylene segment and either a poly(meth)acrylate or polystyrene segment was accomplished through the combination of postmetallocene-mediated ethylene polymerization and subsequent atom transfer radical polymerization. A vinyl-terminated polyethylene (number-average molecular weight = 1800, weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight =1.70) was synthesized by the polymerization of ethylene with a phenoxyimine zirconium complex as a catalyst activated with methylalumoxane (MAO). This polyethylene was efficiently converted into an atom transfer radical polymerization macroinitiator by the addition of α-bromoisobutyric acid to the vinyl chain end, and the polyethylene macroinitiator was used for the atom transfer radical polymerization of n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, or styrene; this resulted in defined polyethylene-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate), polyethylene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate), and polyethylene-b-polystyrene block copolymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) block copolymers were synthesized by using PDMS macroinitiators with copper-mediated living radical polymerization. Diamino PDMS led to initiators that gave ABA block copolymers, but there was low initiator efficiency and molecular weights are somewhat uncontrolled. The use of mono- and difunctional carbinol–hydroxyl functional initiators led to AB and ABA block copolymers with narrow polydispersity indices (PDIs) and controlled number-average molecular weights (Mn's). Polymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was discovered with a range of molecular weights produced. Polymerizations proceeded with excellent first-order kinetics indicative of living polymerization. ABA block copolymers with MMA were prepared with between 28 and 84 wt % poly(methyl methacrylate) with Mn's between 7.6 and 35 K (PDI <1.30), which show thermal transitions characteristic of block copolymers. ABA block copolymers with DMAEMA led to amphiphilic block copolymers with Mn's between 9.5 and 45.7 K (PDIs of 1.25–1.70), which formed aggregates in solution with a critical micelle concentration of 0.1 g dm−3 as determined by pyrene fluorimetry experiments. Monocarbinol functional PDMS gave AB block copolymers with both MMA and DMAEMA. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 1833–1842, 2001  相似文献

Azo-containing polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) obtained by cationic polymerization was used as a macroinitiator in the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of styrene and methyl acrylate in conjunction with CuCl2/2,2′-bipyridine as a catalyst. Diblock PTHF–polystyrene and PTHF–poly(methyl acrylate) were obtained after a two-step process. In the first step of the reaction, stable chlorine-end-capped PTHF was formed with the thermolysis of azo-linked PTHF at 65–70 °C in the presence of the catalyst. Heating the system at temperatures of 100–110 °C started the polymerization of the second monomer, which resulted in the formation of block copolymers. The decomposition behavior of the azo-linked PTHF and the structure of the block copolymers were determined by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Kinetic studies and GPC analyses further confirmed the controlled/living nature of the RATRP initiated by the polymeric radicals. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High molecular weight poly(vinyl)silazane were synthesized successfully by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in toluene at 120 °C, using dithiocarbamate derivatives and 2,2′‐azobis‐isobutyrylnitrile (AIBN) as the RAFT agents and thermal initiator, respectively. The polymerization of a vinylcyclicsilazane oligomer with 82.5% conversion was readily controlled to increase the molecular weight from 1000 to 12,000 g/mol with a narrow polydispersity <1.5. The resulting polymer showed a high ceramic yield of 70 wt % at 1000 °C. Moreover, the approach was extended successfully to the synthesis of poly(vinyl)silazane‐block‐polystyrene as an inorganic–organic diblock copolymer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) was investigated using cuprous bromide with different ligands, solvents, deactivators, etc. The polymerization in bulk and diphenyl ether solvent system performed using Cu(I)Br complexed with NNN′, N″, N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) catalyst in conjunction with 2-bromopropionitrile as an initiator at room temperature showed a curvature in the first-order kinetic plot. The controlled polymerization in methanol solution resulted in slower rate of polymerization and lower molecular weights. Well-defined diblock copolymers of PSt-b-PtBMA synthesized by polystyrene bromo macroinitiator (PSt-Br) with Cu(I)Cl/PMDETA catalyst system yielded predetermined molecular weights and lower polydispersities. Otherwise, the Cu(I)Br/PMDETA catalytic system showed an inefficient polymerization of tert-butyl methacrylate with lower molecular weights and higher polydispersities. Subsequent hydrolysis of the homopolymer refluxed in dioxane with addition of HCl afforded well-defined poly(methacrylic acid).  相似文献

TERMINI stands for irreversible terminator multifunctional initiator and represents a new concept elaborated in our laboratory for the design of novel macromolecules with complex architecture from a diversity of commercial monomers. TERMINI is a masked multifunctional initiator that quantitatively interrupts a living polymerization. After demasking, the TERMINI-derived repeat unit provides access to a quantitative reinitiation of the same living polymerization in more than one direction, thus becoming a branching point. In this article, with a combination of self-regulated metal-catalyzed living radical polymerization and TERMINI, we demonstrate a new method for the divergent synthesis of dendritic poly(methyl methacrylate) containing a bifunctional core at its focal point. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study reports an application of trichloroethanol (TCE) as a bifunctional initiator for the synthesis of block copolymers (BCPs) by organocatalyzed ring‐opening polymerization (OROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). TCE was employed to synthesize a low dispersity poly (valerolactone) macroinitiator, which was subsequently used for the ATRP of tert‐butyl methacrylate. While it is known that TCE can serve as an initiator in ATRP, the ability to induce polymerization under OROP is reported for the first time. The formation of well‐defined BCPs was confirmed by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. Computational studies were performed to obtain a molecular‐level understanding of the ring‐opening polymerization mechanism involving TCE as initiator. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. This article reports the synthesis of the block and graft copolymers using peroxygen‐containing poly(methyl methacrylate) (poly‐MMA) as a macroinitiator that was prepared from the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of bis(4,4′‐bromomethyl benzoyl peroxide) (BBP). The effects of reaction temperatures on the ATRP system were studied in detail. Kinetic studies were carried out to investigate controlled ATRP for BBP/CuBr/bpy initiating system with MMA at 40 °C and free radical polymerization of styrene (S) at 80 °C. The plots of ln ([Mo]/[Mt]) versus reaction time are linear, corresponding to first‐order kinetics. Poly‐MMA initiators were used in the bulk polymerization of S to obtain poly (MMA‐b‐S) block copolymers. Poly‐MMA initiators containing undecomposed peroygen groups were used for the graft copolymerization of polybutadiene (PBd) and natural rubber (RSS‐3) to obtain crosslinked poly (MMA‐g‐PBd) and poly(MMA‐g‐RSS‐3) graft copolymers. Swelling ratio values (qv) of the graft copolymers in CHCl3 were calculated. The characterizations of the polymers were achieved by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the fractional precipitation (γ) techniques. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The transformations of living cationic polymerization to ATRP to form the block and graft copolymers of β-pinene with styrene were performed. Poly(β-pinene) carrying benzyl chloride terminal [poly(β-p)StCl] was prepared by capping the living poly(β-pinene), which was obtained with 1-phenylethyl chloride/TiCl4/Ti(OiPr)4/nBu4NCl initiating system, with a few units of styrene. Poly(β-p)StCl, in conjunction with CuCl and bpy, could initiate the ATRP of styrene and gave well-defined block copolymer of β-pinene and styrene. In contrast, tert-alkyl-chlorine-capped poly(β-pinene) [poly(β-p)Cl] obtained by living cationic polymerization of β-pinene per se without capping of styrene gave a mixture of desired block copolymers and unreacted poly(β-p)Cl due to the low initiating reactivity of poly(β-p)Cl. Brominated poly(β-pinene) synthesized by the quantitative bromination of poly(β-pinene) using NBS was also used to initiate the ATRP of styrene in the presence of CuBr and bpy to prepare the graft copolymer of β-pinene and styrene. The first-order kinetic characteristic and linear increment of molecule weight with the increasing of monomer conversion indicated the living nature of this ATRP grafting.  相似文献

A two-step procedure based on ultrasonic irradiation and reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) for the synthesis of block copolymers is described. In the first step of the procedure, a stable chlorine-end-capped polymer is formed upon the ultrasonic irradiation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in dry benzene in the presence of a copper chloride/2,2′-bipyridine catalyst. Heating the system to 110 °C initiates the polymerization of the second monomer, styrene, and this results in the formation of the block copolymers. The degradation behavior of PMMA under ultrasonic irradiation has also been studied. The agreement of the experimentally obtained molecular weights and theoretical molecular weights and the unimodal shapes of the gel permeation chromatography curves of the block copolymers indicate the controlled nature of the RATRP process initiated by polymeric radicals formed by sonication. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
