Optimizing glass coating lines: MIP model and valid inequalities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Glass coating is a specific transformation aiming at improving glass performance. The work presented in this paper deals with the determination of the optimal configuration of the production lines used to perform this operation. We propose a first MIP formulation of the problem and then discuss several types of valid inequalities for improving it. The main idea is to exploit explicit or implicit binary exclusion constraints to derive stronger valid inequalities: the maximal clique constraints. Efficient (polynomial time) separation algorithms exploiting special structure of the problem are described, giving rise to a cutting-plane generation procedure for strengthening the initial formulation. The computational study carried out shows that, with the enhanced formulation, good solutions can be obtained within reasonable computation times using currently available integer programming software.  相似文献

We consider a very simple integer program involving production of a single item and start-up costs for the standard machines first studied by Lasdon and Terjung. Solving directly as an integer program leads to prohibitively large branch and bound trees. Here, we show how using a simple family of valid inequalities and a heuristic procedure to choose one of these inequalities as a cut, it is possible to reduce substantially the size of the tree, and in several cases to eliminate the need for branch and bound. The valid inequalities used are all simple Gomory cuts. However, they are derived from the initial problem formulation rather than from the optimal linear programming tableau.  相似文献

We consider the problem of scheduling a set of tasks related by precedence constraints to a set of processors, so as to minimize their makespan. Each task has to be assigned to a unique processor and no preemption is allowed. A new integer programming formulation of the problem is given and strong valid inequalities are derived. A subset of the inequalities in this formulation has a strong combinatorial structure, which we use to define the polytope of partitions into linear orders. The facial structure of this polytope is investigated and facet defining inequalities are presented which may be helpful to tighten the integer programming formulation of other variants of multiprocessor scheduling problems. Numerical results on real-life problems are presented.  相似文献

The Median-Path problem consists of locating a st-path on a network, minimizing a function of two parameters: accessibility to the path and total cost of the path. Applications of this problem can be found in transportation planning, water resource management and fluid transportation. A problem formulation based on Subtour and Variable Upper Bound (VUB) inequalities was proposed in the seminal paper by (Current, Revelle and Cohon, 1989). In this paper we introduce a tighter formulation, based on a new family of valid inequalities, named Lifted Subtour inequalities, that are proved to be facet-defining. For the class of Lifted Subtour inequalities we propose a polynomial separation algorithm. Then we introduce more families of valid inequalities derived by investigating the relation to the Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem (ATSP) polytope and to the Stable Set polytope. These results are used to develop a Branch-and-Cut algorithm that enables us to solve to optimality small and medium size instances in less than 2 hours of CPU time on a workstation.  相似文献

Recently, several successful applications of strong cutting plane methods to combinatorial optimization problems have renewed interest in cutting plane methods, and polyhedral characterizations, of integer programming problems. In this paper, we investigate the polyhedral structure of the capacitated plant location problem. Our purpose is to identify facets and valid inequalities for a wide range of capacitated fixed charge problems that contain this prototype problem as a substructure. The first part of the paper introduces a family of facets for a version of the capacitated plant location problem with a constant capacity for all plants. These facet inequalities depend on the capacity and thus differ fundamentally from the valid inequalities for the uncapacited version of the problem. We also introduce a second formulation for a model with indivisible customer demand and show that it is equivalent to a vertex packing problem on a derived graph. We identify facets and valid inequalities for this version of the problem by applying known results for the vertex packing polytope. This research was partially supported by Grant # ECS-8316224 from the National Science Foundation's Program in Systems Theory and Operations Research.  相似文献

An alternative formulation for the set packing problem in a higher dimension is presented. The addition of a new family of binary variables allows us to find new valid inequalities, some of which are shown to be facets of the polytope in the higher dimension. We also consider the Winner Determination Problem, which is equivalent to the set packing problem and whose special structure allows us to easily implement these valid inequalities in a very easy way. The computational experiments illustrate the performance of the valid inequalities and obtain good results.  相似文献

This paper presents a new generalization of the graph multicoloring problem. We propose a Branch-and-Cut algorithm based on a new integer programming formulation. The cuts used are valid inequalities that we could identify to the polytope associated with the model. The Branch-and-Cut system includes separation heuristics for the valid inequalities, specific initial and primal heuristics, branching and pruning rules. We report on computational experience with random instances.  相似文献

We consider a discrete facility location problem where the difference between the maximum and minimum number of customers allocated to every plant has to be balanced. Two different Integer Programming formulations are built, and several families of valid inequalities for these formulations are developed. Preprocessing techniques which allow to reduce the size of the largest formulation, based on the upper bound obtained by means of an ad hoc heuristic solution, are also incorporated. Since the number of available valid inequalities for this formulation is exponential, a branch-and-cut algorithm is designed where the most violated inequalities are separated at every node of the branching tree. Both formulations, with and without the improvements, are tested in a computational framework in order to discriminate the most promising solution methods. Difficult instances with up to 50 potential plants and 100 customers, and largest easy instances, can be solved in one CPU hour.  相似文献

The problem of determining the sequence of stops and the amount of load to carry in each segment route, named the Multi-Stop Routing Problem (MSRP) is addressed. A 0/1 mixed integer linear program and formulation refinements which facilitate the solution process are presented. Since the constraint set of the MSRP includes 0/1 mixed rows, valid inequalities for this type of regions are presented. Then these results are applied to the constraint set of the routing problem, presenting additional valid inequalities. In addition, polynomial separation algorithms associated with the valid inequalities are given, computational results are also included.  相似文献

A branch-and-cut algorithm for solving linear problems with continuous separable piecewise linear cost functions was developed in 2005 by Keha et al. This algorithm is based on valid inequalities for an SOS2 based formulation of the problem. In this paper we study the extension of the algorithm to the case where the cost function is only lower semicontinuous. We extend the SOS2 based formulation to the lower semicontinuous case and show how the inequalities introduced by Keha et al. can also be used for this new formulation. We also introduce a simple generalization of one of the inequalities introduced by Keha et al. Furthermore, we study the discontinuities caused by fixed charge jumps and introduce two new valid inequalities by extending classical results for fixed charge linear problems. Finally, we report computational results showing how the addition of the developed inequalities can significantly improve the performance of CPLEX when solving these kinds of problems.  相似文献

The most effective software packages for solving mixed 0–1linear programs use strong valid linear inequalities derived from polyhedral theory. We introduce a new procedure which enables one to take known valid inequalities for the knapsack polytope, and convert them into valid inequalities for the fixed-charge and single-node flow polytopes. The resulting inequalities are very different from the previously known inequalities (such as flow cover and flow pack inequalities), and define facets under certain conditions.  相似文献

We consider the resource-constrained scheduling problem when each job’s resource requirements remain constant over its processing time. We study a time-indexed formulation of the problem, providing facet-defining inequalities for a projection of the resulting polyhedron that exploit the resource limitations inherent in the problem. Lifting procedures are then provided for obtaining strong valid inequalities for the original polyhedron. Computational results are presented to demonstrate the strength of these inequalities.  相似文献

Mixed-integer rounding (MIR) inequalities play a central role in the development of strong cutting planes for mixed-integer programs. In this paper, we investigate how known MIR inequalities can be combined in order to generate new strong valid inequalities.?Given a mixed-integer region S and a collection of valid “base” mixed-integer inequalities, we develop a procedure for generating new valid inequalities for S. The starting point of our procedure is to consider the MIR inequalities related with the base inequalities. For any subset of these MIR inequalities, we generate two new inequalities by combining or “mixing” them. We show that the new inequalities are strong in the sense that they fully describe the convex hull of a special mixed-integer region associated with the base inequalities.?We discuss how the mixing procedure can be used to obtain new classes of strong valid inequalities for various mixed-integer programming problems. In particular, we present examples for production planning, capacitated facility location, capacitated network design, and multiple knapsack problems. We also present preliminary computational results using the mixing procedure to tighten the formulation of some difficult integer programs. Finally we study some extensions of this mixing procedure. Borozan and Cornuéjols show that valid inequalities for an infinite relaxation for MIPs, relative to some vertex f of the linear relaxation, are determined by maximal lattice-free convex sets containing f. We show that cuts for the original MIP are given by such sets with f in the interior.  相似文献

This paper considers an integrated service network design problem for a given set of freight demands that is concerned with integration of locating cross-docking (CD) centers and allocating vehicles for the associated direct (transportation) services from origin node to a CD center or from a CD center to the destination node. For the vehicle allocation, direct services (sub-routes) should be determined for the given freight demands, and then the vehicle allocation has to be made in consideration of routing for the associated direct service fulfillment subject to vehicle capacity and service time restriction. The problem is modeled as a path-based formulation for which a tabu-search-based solution algorithm is proposed. To guarantee the performance of the proposed solution algorithm, strong valid inequalities are derived based on the polyhedral characteristics of the problem domain and an efficient separation heuristic is derived for identifying any violated valid inequalities. Computational experiments are performed to test the performance of the proposed solution algorithm and also that of a valid-inequality separation algorithm, which finds that the solution algorithm works quite well and the separation algorithm provides strengthened lower bounds. Its immediate application may be made to strategic (integrated) service network designs and to tactical service network planning for the CD network.  相似文献

Fluence map optimization problems are commonly solved in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) planning. We show that, when subject to dose-volume restrictions, these problems are NP-hard and that the linear programming relaxation of their natural mixed integer programming formulation can be arbitrarily weak. We then derive strong valid inequalities for fluence map optimization problems under dose-volume restrictions using disjunctive programming theory and show that strengthening mixed integer programming formulations with these valid inequalities has significant computational benefits.  相似文献

A cardinality constrained knapsack problem is a continuous knapsack problem in which no more than a specified number of nonnegative variables are allowed to be positive. This structure occurs, for example, in areas such as finance, location, and scheduling. Traditionally, cardinality constraints are modeled by introducing auxiliary 0-1 variables and additional constraints that relate the continuous and the 0-1 variables. We use an alternative approach, in which we keep in the model only the continuous variables, and we enforce the cardinality constraint through a specialized branching scheme and the use of strong inequalities valid for the convex hull of the feasible set in the space of the continuous variables. To derive the valid inequalities, we extend the concepts of cover and cover inequality, commonly used in 0-1 programming, to this class of problems, and we show how cover inequalities can be lifted to derive facet-defining inequalities. We present three families of non-trivial facet-defining inequalities that are lifted cover inequalities. Finally, we report computational results that demonstrate the effectiveness of lifted cover inequalities and the superiority of the approach of not introducing auxiliary 0-1 variables over the traditional MIP approach for this class of problems. LetG=(V, E) be an undirected graph andA⊆V. We consider the problem of finding a minimum cost set of edges whose deletion separates every pair of nodes inA. We consider two extended formulations using both node and edge variables. An edge variable formulation has previously been considered for this problem (Chopra and Rao (1991), Cunningham (1991)). We show that the LP-relaxations of the extended formulations are stronger than the LP-relaxation of the edge variable formulation (even with an extra class of valid inequalities added). This is interesting because, while the LP-relaxations of the extended formulations can be solved in polynomial time, the LP-relaxation of the edge variable formulation cannot. We also give a class of valid inequalities for one of the extended formulations. Computational results using the extended formulations are performed.  相似文献
