Controlled radical polymerizations have significantly impacted the field of polymer science by facilitating the synthesis of polymers with greater control over molecular weight, structure, and dispersity (Ð). As these synthetic techniques continue to evolve, more degrees of control can be realized via external regulation. Recent work has demonstrated external regulation of a controlled radical polymerization process with light using a photoredox Ir‐catalyst. While light offers many advantages as a stimulus for polymerization, scaling up presents unique challenges such as shallow and uneven penetration of light through the reaction medium, which negatively impacts the rate of polymerization. This work addresses some of the challenges associated with scaling up light‐mediated controlled radical polymerizations by employing a continuous flow microreactor and selecting appropriate reactor materials for oxygen sensitive reactions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naphthalimide‐phthalimide derivatives (NDPDs) have been synthesized and combined with an iodonium salt, N‐vinylcarbazole, amine or 2,4,6‐tris(trichloromethyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine to produce reactive species (i.e., radicals and cations). These generated reactive species are capable of initiating the cationic polymerization of epoxides and/or the radical polymerization of acrylates upon exposure to very soft polychromatic visible lights or blue lights. Compared with the well‐known camphorquinone based systems used as references, the novel NDPD based combinations employed here demonstrate clearly higher efficiencies for the cationic polymerization of epoxides under air as well as the radical polymerization of acrylates. Remarkably, one of the NDPDs (i.e., NDPD2) based systems is characterized by an outstanding reactivity. The structure/reactivity/efficiency relationships of the investigated NDPDs were studied by fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, laser flash photolysis, electron spin resonance spin trapping, and steady state photolysis techniques. The key parameters for their reactivity are provided. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 665–674  相似文献

Isoquinolinone derivatives (IQ) have been synthesized and combined with different additives (an amine, 2,4,6‐tris(trichloromethyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine, an iodonium salt, or N‐vinylcarbazole) to produce reactive species (i.e. radicals and cations) being able to initiate the radical polymerization of acrylates, the cationic polymerization of epoxides, the thiol‐ene polymerization of trifunctional thiol/divinylether, and the synthesis of epoxide/acrylate interpenetrated polymer network IPN upon exposure to very soft polychromatic visible lights, blue laser diode or blue LED lights. Compared with the use of camphorquinone based systems, the novel combinations employed here ensures higher monomer conversions (~50–60% vs. ~15–35%) and better polymerization rates in radical polymerization. The chemical mechanisms are studied by steady‐state photolysis, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, laser flash photolysis, and electron spin resonance spin trapping techniques. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel thioxanthone (TX) derivatives are used as versatile photoinitiators upon visible light‐emitting diode (LED; e.g., 405, 425, and 450 nm) exposure. The mechanisms for the photochemical generation of reactive species (i.e., cations and free radicals) produced from photoinitiating systems based on the photoinitiator and an iodonium salt, tris(trimethylsilyl)silane, or an amine, were studied by UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, steady‐state photolysis, and electron spin resonance spin‐trapping techniques. The reactive species are particularly efficient for cationic, free radical, hybrid, and thiol‐ene photopolymerizations upon LED exposure. The optimized photoinitiating systems exhibit higher efficiency than those of reference systems (i.e., isopropyl TX‐based photoinitiating systems), especially in the visible range. According to their beneficial features, these photoinitiating systems have considerable potential in photocuring applications. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A tetraarmed star‐shaped poly(methyl methacrylate) (s‐PMMA) was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization with 2‐bromoisobutyryl pentaerythritol as the initiator. For comparison, a linear PMMA with the identical molecular weight (l‐PMMA) was also prepared. The blends of the two PMMA samples with poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) were prepared to investigate the effect of macromolecular topological structure on miscibility and crystallization behavior of the binary blends. The behavior of single and composition‐dependent glass transition temperatures was found for the blends of s‐PMMA with PVDF, indicating that the s‐PMMA is miscible with PVDF in the amorphous state just like l‐PMMA. The miscibility was further evidenced by the depression of equilibrium melting points. It is found that the blends of s‐PMMA and PVDF displayed the larger k value of Gordon–Taylor equation than the blends of l‐PMMA and PVDF blends. According to the depression of equilibrium melting points, the intermolecular parameters for the two blends were estimated. It is noted that the s‐PMMA/PVDF blends displayed the lower interaction parameter than l‐PMMA/PVDF blends. The isothermal crystallization kinetics shows that the crystallization of PVDF in the blends containing s‐PMMA is faster than that in the blends containing the linear PMMA. The surface‐folding free energy of PVDF chains in the blends containing s‐PMMA is significantly lower than those in the blends containing l‐PMMA. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Onium salts, namely sulfonium, phosphonium, ammonium, and pyridinium salts containing phenacyl group are photoinitiators appropriate for the polymerization of monomers such as oxiranes and vinyl ethers, which are not polymerizable by a free-radical mechanism. The initiation is accomplished by direct or indirect (sensitized) photolysis of the salts. Depending on the type of the salt, the direct photoinitiation of cationic polymerization involves reversible or irreversible processes. The photolysis of phenacylsulfonium compounds proceeds by a reversible process, while the other types undergo irreversible photolysis leading to complete fragmentation of the photoinitiator. An additionally useful tool, namely photosensitized generation of initiating species enlarges the versatility of these salts as photoinitiators. Photoinitiated free-radical and zwitterionic polymerizations by using phenacyl-type salts are also addressed. Keto-enol tautomerization of phenacyl pyridinium salts is discussed. Moreover, an interesting application concerning in situ synthesis of clay-poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites with the aid of the phenacyl anilinium salt-based photopolymerization technique is noted.  相似文献

Methacrylic acid (MAA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), methacrylamide, and oligomers of MAA and MMA were selected as a model of active radical species in living template polymerization using stereocomplex formation. The adsorption behaviors of the aforementioned model compounds were examined toward porous isotactic‐(it‐) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) ultrathin films on a quartz crystal microbalance, which was prepared by the extracting of syndiotactic‐(st‐) poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) from it‐PMMA/st‐PMAA stereocomplexes. The apparent predominant adsorption of oligomers to monomers was observed in both PMAA and PMMA oligomers, suggesting that the mechanism of template polymerization follows the pick up mechanism. Although vinyl monomers were not incorporated into the porous it‐PMMA ultrathin film, both PMMA and PMAA oligomers were adsorbed at the initial stages. However, adsorbed amounts were limited to about 5 and 15% at 0.1 mol L?1, respectively, which are much smaller values than corresponding st‐polymers. The results imply that radical coupling reaction is prevented during template polymerization to support the resulting living polymerization. ATR‐IR spectral patterns of oligomer complexes and it‐PMMA slightly changed in both cases, suggesting complex formation. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the presence of different amounts of block copolymers [polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)] on the morphology of polystyrene/poly (methyl methacrylate) composite latex particles was investigated. The block copolymers were produced in situ by controlled radical polymerization (CRP) through the addition of the second monomer to a seed prepared by miniemulsion polymerization with a certain amount of a CRP agent. With an increase in the amounts of the block copolymers, the particle morphology changed from a hemisphere morphology (for a latex without block copolymers, i.e., without the use of a CRP agent during the polymerization) to clear core–shell morphologies as a result of decreasing polymer–polymer interfacial tension © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate) with a thiophene end group having narrow polydispersity was prepared by the Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) technique. Subsequently, electrically conducting block copolymers of thiophene-capped poly(methyl methacrylate) with pyrrole were synthesized by using p-toluene sulfonic acid and sodium dodecyl sulfate as the supporting electrolytes via constant potential electrolysis. Characterization of the block copolymers were performed by CV, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and DSC analyses. Electrical conductivities were evaluated by the four-probe technique. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. TG studies are given for PMMA prepared by radical polymerization, PTHF prepared by cationic polymerization, and their blends. A procedure is proposed for determining the activation energy, frequency factor, and the order of events corresponding to the respective stages of the multistage TG curves. The order of the initial event of PMMA is not the 1st. It is shown for this discussion that the relationship between mass loss and time of the 2nd order reaction is similar to that of the depolymerization including the vaporization process at the earlier times. Some of TG curves of PTHF are not dependent on the heating rate. This independence depends on the size of sample. The order of event of PTHF, which is obtained from TG curves dependent on the heating rate, is the 0th. The event order equal to the 0th reflects major contribution of vaporization in the event. The TG behaviors shown by the procedure mentioned above for the PMMA/PTHF blends with the smaller PMMA or PTHF contents cancel those of PMMA or PTHF. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes are grown by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization on silicon surfaces at various polymerization temperatures. Kinetic studies show that the layer thickness scales linearly with the degree of polymerization of the polymers under some conditions, indicating a constant graft density of the surface‐attached chains. At high temperatures, the layer growth is a controlled process only for short reaction times, and after a rapid increase, the film growth levels off, and a constant thickness is obtained. At lower reaction temperatures, polymers with a lower polydispersity are obtained, but at the expense of a much slower growth rate. Accordingly, intermediate temperatures yield the highest film thickness on experimentally feasible timescales. The reinitiation of these surface‐grafted PMMA chains at room temperature to either extend the chains or grow a chemically different polyglycidylmethacrylate block demonstrates the presence of active ends and the living nature of the surface‐grafted PMMA chains. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We prepared a novel miktoarm star copolymer with an azobenzene unit at the core via combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide‐mediated free radical polymerization (NMP) routes. For this purpose, first, mikto‐functional initiator, 3 , with tertiary bromide (for ATRP) and 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yloxy (TEMPO) (for NMP) functionalities and an azobenzene moiety at the core was synthesized. The initiator 3 thus obtained was used in the subsequent living radical polymerization routes such as ATRP of MMA and NMP of St, respectively, to give A2B2 type miktoarm star copolymer, (PMMA)2‐(PSt)2 with an azobenzene unit at the core with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.15). The photoresponsive properties of 3 and (PMMA)2‐(PSt)2 miktoarm star copolymer were investigated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1396–1403, 2006  相似文献

Model experiments for synthesis of a comb-shaped copolymer with cellulose side-chains were performed with cellobiose derivatives. A novel cellobiose monomer, N-(15-methacryloyloxypentadecanoyl)-2,3,6-tri-O-acetyl-4-O-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl)-β-d-glucopyranosylamine (2) was prepared from heptaacetylcellobiosyl- amine. Homopolymerization of cellobiose monomer 2 and copolymerization of monomer 2 with methyl methacrylate (MMA) were performed using 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as an initiator to obtain homopolymers 3-i (i = 1–4) and copolymers 3-i (i = 5–7), poly(methyl methacrylate)-graft-(heptaacetylcellobiosylamine-C15). The size exclusion chromatography—multi-angle laser light scattering (SEC-MALS) measurements revealed that comb-shaped homopolymers 3-i (i = 1–4) had more compact structures compared to copolymers 3-i (i = 5–7) at the same elution volume. Selective deacetylation of polymers 3-i (i = 1–7) gave novel cellobiose polymers 4-i (i = 1–7), poly(methyl methacrylate)-graft-(cellobiosylamine-C15). The amide linkages between cellobiose moiety and long-chain alkyl group, and the ester linkages between PMMA main-chain and long-chain alkyl group remained after deprotection. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements revealed that the T gs of the polymers 4-i (i = 1, 5, 6, 7) increased with increasing cellobiose composition in the polymers. It was indicated that cellobiose moieties of polymers 4-i (i = 1, 5, 6, 7) reduced the mobility of PMMA main-chain.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, it has been demonstrated that poly(styrene-co-1-methylpyrenyl methacrylate) macro-photoinitiator (PSMM) containing side chain pyrene moieties were successfully prepared using “radical polymerization method.” Firstly, 1-pyrene methanol and methacryloyl chloride were reacted in dichloromethane for 24?h at 0?°C in order to give 1-methoxy pyrene methacrylate macromonomer. Then styrene was polymerized with this macromonomer to obtained macro-photoinitiator. The synthesized copolymer is also both computationally and experimentally demonstrated that the macro-photoinitiator obtained has similar absorption characteristics with the parent pyrene molecule. According to obtained results, the synthesized copolymer was more effective in the presence of triethyl amine as a macro-photoinitiator.  相似文献

Tetrakis bromomethyl benzene was used as a tetrafunctional initiator in the synthesis of four‐armed star polymers of methyl methacrylate via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with a CuBr/2,2 bipyridine catalytic system and benzene as a solvent. Relatively low polydispersities were achieved, and the experimental molecular weights were in agreement with the theoretical ones. A combination of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperidine‐N‐oxyl‐mediated free‐radical polymerization and ATRP was used to synthesize various graft copolymers with polystyrene backbones and poly(t‐butyl methacrylate) grafts. In this case, the backbone was produced with a 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperidine‐N‐oxyl‐mediated stable free‐radical polymerization process from the copolymerization of styrene and p‐(chloromethyl) styrene. This polychloromethylated polymer was used as an ATRP multifunctional initiator for t‐butyl methacrylate polymerization, giving the desired graft copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel amphiphilic graft copolymer consisting of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) backbones and hydrophobic poly(butyl methacrylate) side chains was synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization followed by hydrolysis of poly‐(methoxymethyl acrylate) backbone. A grafting‐from strategy was employed for the synthesis of graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index < 1.40). Hydrophobic side chains were connected to the backbone through stable C? C bonds instead of ester connections. Poly(methoxymethyl acrylate) backbone was easily hydrolyzed to poly(acrylic acid) backbone with HCl without affecting the hydrophobic side chains. The amphiphilic graft copolymer could form stable micelles in water. The critical micelle concentration in water was determined by a fluorescence probe technique. The morphology of the micelles was preliminarily explored with transmission electron microscopy and was found to be spheres. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
