Direct numerical simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence are used to investigate the effects of turbulence on the transport of particles in gas flows or bubbles in liquid flows. The inertia associated with the bubbles or the particles leads to locally strong concentrations of these in regions of instantaneously strong vorticity for bubbles or strain-rate for particles. This alters the average settling rates and other processes. If the mass-loading of the dispersed phase is significant a random “turbulent” flow is generated by the particle settling. A simple demonstration of this is given, showing the statistically axisymmetric character of this flow and how it can modify an ambient turbulent flow.  相似文献

The accuracy of point-particle models with two-way coupling for particles of Kolmogorov-length-scale size is assessed. Turbulent kinetic energy budgets are analyzed in physical and in spectral space. It is shown that the force projection of the two-way coupling consistently models the direct transfer of kinetic energy on the particle surfaces and the enhanced viscous dissipation in the vicinity of the particles. Direct and large-eddy simulations of particle-laden flows in isotropic decaying turbulence are conducted and compared with direct-particle fluid simulations, where the particle-fluid interaction is fully resolved. An analysis in spectral space shows that turbulence modulation by particles mainly occurs at larger scales, although the momentum transfer takes place at the smallest scales. Therefore, the turbulent kinetic energy cascade of the single phase dominates in particle-laden flows. It is shown that point-particle models do not interfere with subgrid scale models, which usually act on the smallest scale. Consequently, point-particle models predict sufficiently accurate the turbulence modulation in direct numerical simulations and even when a subgrid scale model is used. The resolution of the LES does not affect the accuracy of the point-particle model, when the subgrid kinetic energy is negligible.  相似文献

Velocity fidelity of flow tracer particles   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Recent developments concerning the unsteady dynamic forces on a spherical particle at finite Reynolds number are reviewed for solid particles and clean micro-bubble. A particle frequency :response function and an energy transfer function are derived for a solid particle or a contaminated micro-bubble in gas or liquid flow. A simple, unified method for estimating the cut-off frequency, or cut-off size, of a solid particle or a contaminated bubble is developed. Particle motion in isotropic turbulence is examined. Responses of the tracer particle to integral length scale structure, to turbulence energy, and to Taylor micro-scale structure are discussed in terms of the particle turbulence diffusivity, the particle turbulence intensity, and the ensemble average of the second invariant of fluid turbulence deformation tensor evaluated on the particle trajectory. The author is grateful to R. The turbulent fluid and particle interaction in the turbulent boundary layer for cross flow over a cylinder has been experimentally studied. A phase-Doppler anemometer was used to measure the mean and fluctuating velocities of both phases. Two size ranges of particles (30μm–60μm and 80μm–150μm) at certain concentrations were used for considering the effects of particle sizes on the mean velocity profiles and on the turbulent intensity levels. The measurements clearly demonstrated that the larger particles damped fluid turbulence. For the smaller particles, this damping effect was less noticeable. The measurements further showed a delay in the separation point for two phase turbulent cross flow over a cylinder. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China  相似文献

Dilute, dispersed two-phase flows arise in many contexts ranging from solid particles or droplets in gas flows to bubbles in liquids. Many of the flows of interest are turbulent, which presents a complex problem to analyze or to determine the dominant physical processes contributing to the observed phenomena. Advances in experimental techniques have made it possible to measure directly turbulent and particle velocity fluctuations in dilute systems. This has provided a counterpart to advances in computational and analytical models and a basis on which to test these models. Three specific areas are considered: the fluctuating forces on an individual particle in an unsteady flow, the response of a solid particle to a turbulent air flow, and the corresponding response of a small bubble in turbulent liquid flows. Results from direct numerical simulations are presented for each of these, including the nonuniform distribution of particles generated by local instantaneous features of the flow. The issue of turbulence modulation at low to moderate void fractions is discussed.  相似文献

The present work is concerned with the interaction between large particles and gas phase turbulence. Gas turbulence modulation in these systems is considered to be dominated by a generation mechanism which arises due to the presence of wakes behind particles. Following a recent proposal, a closure for gas turbulence modulation accounting for the effect of wakes is employed within the context of a mathematical model for particle-laden, turbulent flows. The model accounts for particle particle and particle-wall interactions associated with larger particles based on concepts from gas kinetic theory. It is shown that due to the significant flattening of the mean gas velocity profile with the addition of particles, and the corresponding decrease in turbulent energy production, a generation mechanism must be present in order to produce gas velocity fluctuation predictions which are consistent with the experimental measurements, even in the case where the experimental results indicate a net suppression of gas phase turbulence in the presence of particles.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of a high Reynolds number flow (Re = 320 000) of a dilute liquid-solid mixture (<1% by volume) was conducted. The turbulent motion of both the liquid phase (water) and particles (0.5, 1, and 2 mm glass beads) was evaluated in an upward pipe flow using a particle image/tracking velocimetry (PIV/PTV) technique. Results show that the Eulerian mean axial velocity of the glass beads is lower than that of the liquid phase in the central region but higher in the near-wall region. Moreover, the presence of the coarse particles has a negligible effect on the turbulence intensity of the liquid phase. Particles show higher streamwise and radial fluctuations than the liquid-phase at the tested conditions. The profiles of particle concentration across the pipe radius show almost constant concentration in the core of the pipe with a decrease towards the near wall region for 0.5 and 1 mm particles. For the 2 mm particles, a nearly linear concentration gradient from centre to the pipe wall is observed. The results presented here provide new information concerning the effect of a dispersed particulate phase on the turbulence modulation of the liquid carrier phase, especially at high Reynolds numbers. The present study also demonstrates how correlations developed to determine if particles cause turbulence attenuation/augmentation are not applicable for solid-liquid flows at high Reynolds numbers. Finally, the importance of particle-fluid slip velocity on fluid phase turbulence modulation is illustrated.  相似文献

Particle-turbulence interaction in a boundary layer   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
Particle-turbulence interaction in wall turbulent flows has been studied. A series of experiments varying particle size, particle density, particle loading and flow Re has been conducted. The results show that the larger polystyrene particles (1100 μm) cause an increase in the number of wall ejections, giving rise to an increase in the measured values of the turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses. On the other hand, the smaller polystyrene particles (120 μm) bring about a decrease in the number of wall ejections, causing a decrease in the measured intensities and Reynolds stresses. These effects are enhanced as the particle loading is increased. It was also found that the heavier glass particles (88 μm) do not bring about any significant modulation of turbulence. In addition, measurements of the burst frequency and the mean streak-spacing show no significant change with increase in particle loading. Based on these observations, a mechanism of particle transport in wall turbulent flows has been proposed, in which the particles are transported (depending on their size, density and flow Re) by the bursting events of the wall regions.  相似文献

The turbulence structure of a horizontal channel flow with microbubbles is experimentally investigated using combined particle image velocimetry (PIV) in order to clarify the mechanism of drag reduction caused by microbubbles. A new system which simultaneously measures the liquid phase and the dispersed bubbles is proposed, based on a combination of particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and the shadow image technique (SIT). To accurately obtain the velocity of the liquid phase, tracer particles which overlap with the bubble shadow images are almost entirely eliminated in the post-processing. Finally, the turbulence characteristics of the flow field are presented, including measurements for both phases, and the bubble effect on the turbulence is quantified.  相似文献

A three-dimensional, Eulerian simulation was developed to describe isothermal, two-phase flow of the continuous (water) and dispersed (solid particles) phases in a rectangular spouted vessel. The mass and momentum conservation equations for each phase were solved using the finite volume technique, which treats each phase separately, while coupling them through drag, turbulence, and energy dissipation due to particle fluctuations. Particle–particle interactions via friction were also included.  相似文献

Dispersion of spray droplets and the modulation of turbulence in the ambient gas by the dispersing droplets are two coupled phenomena that are closely linked to the evolution of global spray characteristics, such as the spreading rate of the spray and the spray cone angle. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent gas flows laden with sub-Kolmogorov size particles, in the absence of gravity, report that dispersion statistics and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) evolve on different timescales. Furthermore, each timescale behaves differently with Stokes number, a non-dimensional flow parameter (defined in this context as the ratio of the particle response time to the Kolmogorov timescale of turbulence) that characterizes how quickly a particle responds to turbulent fluctuations in the carrier or gas phase. A new dual-timescale Langevin model (DLM) composed of two coupled Langevin equations for the fluctuating velocities, one for each phase, is proposed. This model possesses a unique feature that the implied TKE and velocity autocorrelation in each phase evolve on different timescales. Consequently, this model has the capability of simultaneously predicting the disparate Stokes number trends in the evolution of dispersion statistics, such as velocity autocorrelations, and TKE in each phase. Predictions of dispersion statistics and TKE from the new model show good agreement with published DNS of non-evaporating and evaporating droplet-laden turbulent flow.  相似文献

Point-particle based direct numerical simulation (PPDNS) has been a productive research tool for studying both single-particle and particle-pair statistics of inertial particles suspended in a turbulent carrier flow. Here we focus on its use in addressing particle-pair statistics relevant to the quantification of turbulent collision rate of inertial particles. PPDNS is particularly useful as the interaction of particles with small-scale (dissipative) turbulent motion of the carrier flow is mostly relevant. Furthermore, since the particle size may be much smaller than the Kolmogorov length of the background fluid turbulence, a large number of particles are needed to accumulate meaningful pair statistics. Starting from the relative simple Lagrangian tracking of so-called ghost particles, PPDNS has significantly advanced our theoretical understanding of the kinematic formulation of the turbulent geometric collision kernel by providing essential data on dynamic collision kernel, radial relative velocity, and radial distribution function. A recent extension of PPDNS is a hybrid direct numerical simulation (HDNS) approach in which the effect of local hydrodynamic interactions of particles is considered, allowing quantitative assessment of the enhancement of collision efficiency by fluid turbulence. Limitations and open issues in PPDNS and HDNS are discussed. Finally, on-going studies of turbulent collision of inertial particles using large-eddy simulations and particle-resolved simulations are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Detailed measurements in a developed particle-laden horizontal channel flow (length 6 m, height 35 mm, the length is about 170 channel heights) are presented using phase-Doppler anemometry for simultaneous determination of air and particle velocity. The particles were spherical glass beads with mean diameters in the range of 60 µm-1 mm. The conveying velocity could be varied between about 10 m/s and 25 m/s, and the particle mass loading could reach values of about 2 (the mass loading is defined as the ratio of particle to gas phase mass flow rates), depending on particle size. For the first time, the degree of wall roughness could be modified by exchanging the wall plates. The influence of these parameters and the effect of inter-particle collisions on the profiles of particle mean and fluctuating velocities and the normalised concentration in the developed flow were examined. It was shown that wall roughness decreases the particle mean velocity and enhances fluctuating velocities due to irregular wall bouncing and an increase in wall collision frequency, i.e. reduction in mean free path. Thereby, the larger particles are mainly more uniformly distributed across the channel, and gravitational settling is reduced. Both components of the particle velocity fluctuation were reduced with increasing mass loading due to inter-particle collisions and the momentum loss involved. Moreover, the effect of the particles on the air flow and the turbulent fluctuations was studied on the basis of profiles in the developed flow and turbulence spectra determined for the streamwise velocity component. In addition to the effect of particle size and mass loading on turbulence modulation, the influence of wall roughness was analysed. It was clearly shown that increasing wall roughness also results in a stronger turbulence dissipation due to two-way coupling.  相似文献

A downward flow of glass bead particles in a vertical pipe is investigated using a two-component LDV/PDPA for a range of Re (6400 < Re < 24,000) and a constant particle loading (m = 0.7). Two particle sizes of 70 and 200 μm are considered in the present work. For the 70 μm particles, the presence of the particles dampens the gas-phase turbulence intensity at the lowest value of Re investigated (8300) compared with the single-phase flow at the same Re. As Re increases, the gas turbulence increases, and for Re > 13,800 the gas turbulence is enhanced compared with the single-phase flow at the same Re. For the 200 μm particles, the intensity also increases with Re and is enhanced for all values of Re investigated, except at the lowest value of Re investigated (6400). At this value, the gas turbulence is equal to that of single-phase flow at the same Re. The observed trend in the gas-phase turbulence modulation with Re is proposed to be due to the change in the segregation patterns and in the average volume fractions of the particles with increasing Re. More importantly, the present experimental results suggest that, consideration of either the gas and particle characteristic length scales or the particle Reynolds number solely is insufficient to predict gas-phase turbulence modulation in gas–particle flows.  相似文献

Bubble columns are widely used in the chemical industry and biotechnology. Flow and turbulence in such an apparatus are induced by the bubble rise, and the bubble behaviour is strongly affected by swarm effects (i.e. the interaction between bubbles). For analysing the bubble swarm behaviour and simultaneously evaluating the flow structure and bubble-induced turbulence, a bubble column of 140 mm diameter and a height of 650 mm or 1,400 mm (initial water level) were considered. The bubble column was aerated with relatively fine bubbles having a mean size between about 0.5 and 4.0 mm. The gas hold-up was varied in the range between 0.5 and 19%. A two-phase pulsed-light velocimetry (PLV) system was developed to evaluate instantaneous flow fields of both rising bubbles and the continuous phase. The measurement of the liquid velocities in the bubble swarm was achieved by adding fluorescing seed particles. Images of bubbles and fluorescing tracer particles were acquired by two CCD cameras. Hence, the images from tracers and bubbles were easily separated by optical interference filters with a bandwidth corresponding to the emitting wavelength of the fluorescing tracer particles and the wavelength of the applied Nd-YAG pulsed laser, respectively. To improve the phase separation of the system, the CCD cameras were additionally placed in a non-perpendicular arrangement with respect to the light sheet. The acquired images were evaluated with the minimum-quadratic-difference algorithm. The potential of this technique for the analysis of bubbly flows with higher void fraction was explored. In order to obtain averaged velocity maps of bubble and fluid within the entire column, about 1,000 image pairs were recorded and evaluated for each phase. In addition, turbulence intensities of the fluid were deduced from the measurements. The turbulence properties were used to characterise bubble-induced turbulence for various bubble mean diameters and gas hold-ups. Moreover, the determination of the average bubble slip velocity within the bubble swarm was possible.  相似文献

A direct numerical simulation technique based on two‐way coupling is presented to study a particle‐laden, decaying isotropic turbulent flow. Physical characteristics of turbulence modulation because of the mono‐dispersed (i.e., particles with single Stokes number) and poly‐dispersed particles (i.e., particles with more than one Stokes number) were investigated. A scale dependent effective viscosity that summarizes the aspects of the interaction between the velocity field and particles is defined in the study. Particles of Stokes number (St) 3.2,6.4 and 12.8 were used in performing the simulations. Poly‐dispersed particles were acquired by mixing particles of two different Stokes numbers at a time. As a whole, decay of turbulence because of the poly‐dispersed particles is observed to be larger than that of the decay of turbulence because of the mono‐dispersed particles. Simulations of poly‐dispersed particle indicate nonlinear characteristics in the modification of the temporal evolution of turbulence energy and dissipation. The scale dependent effective viscosity, which correlates with the energy spectrum plot, indicates that the decay of turbulence is mostly observed at the intermediate scales of turbulence. The effective viscosity for the simulations of the poly‐dispersed particles was calculated to be higher than that of the simulations of the mono‐dispersed particles.
