The hydrogen bonding complexes HO(H2O)n (n = 1–3) were completely investigated in the present study using DFT and MP2 methods at varied basis set levels from 6‐31++G(d,p) to 6‐311++G(2d,2p). For n = 1 two, for n = 2 two, and for n = 3 five reasonable geometries are considered. The optimized geometric parameters and interaction energies for various complexes at different levels are estimated. The infrared spectrum frequencies and IR intensities of the most stable structures are reported. Finally, thermochemistry studies are also carried out. The results indicate that the formation and the number of hydrogen bonding have played an important role in the structures and relative stabilities of different complexes. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various properties of typical structures of water clusters in the n = 2–34 size regime with the change of cluster size have been systematically explored. Full optimizations are carried out for the structures presented in this article at the Hartree–Fock (HF) level using the 6‐31G(d) basis set by taking into account the positions of all atoms within the cluster. The influence of the HF level on the results has been reflected by the comparison between the binding energies of (H2O)n (n = 2–6, 8, 11, 13, 20) calculated at the HF level and those obtained from high‐level ab initio calculations at the second‐order Møller–Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory and the coupled cluster method including singles and doubles with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) levels. HF is inaccurate when compared with MP2 and CCSD(T), but it is more practical and allows us to study larger systems. The computed properties characterizing water clusters (H2O)n (n = 2–34) include optimal structures, structural parameters, binding energies, hydrogen bonds, charge distributions, dipole moments, and so on. When the cluster size increases, trends of the above various properties have been presented to provide important reference for understanding and describing the nature of the hydrogen bond. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The interaction of superoxide ion O2? with up to four water molecules [O2?: (H2O)n, n = 1, 2, 4] has been investigated using ab initio molecular orbital theory. The binding energy of O2?: H2O is calculated to be ?20.6 kcal/mol in good agreement with gas phase experimental data. At the MP3/6-31G* level the O2?:H2O complex has a C2v structure with a double (cyclic) hydrogen bond between O2? and H2O. A Cs structure with a single hydrogen bond is only 0.7 kcal/mol less stable. Interaction of H2O with the doubly occupied π* orbital of O2? is preferred slightly over interaction with the singly occupied π* orbital. Natural bond orbital analysis suggests that both electrostatic and charge transfer interactions are important in anionic complexes. The charge transfer occurs predominantly in the O2? → H2O direction and is important in determining the relative stabilities of the different structures and states. Singly and doubly hydrogen-bonded structures for the O2?: (H2O)2 and O2?: (H2O)4 clusters were found to be similar in stability and the increase in binding of the cluster becomes smaller as each additional water molecule is added to the cluster.  相似文献

To understand the autoionization of pure water and the solvation of ammonia in water, we investigated the undissociated and dissociated (ion-pair) structures of (H2O) n and NH3(H2O)n-1 (n = 5, 8, 9, 21) using density functional theory (DFT) and second order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2). The stability, thermodynamic properties, and infrared spectra were also studied. The dissociated (ion-pair) form of the clusters tends to favor the solvent-separated ion-pair of H3O+/NH4+ and OH-. As for the NH3(H2O)20 cluster, the undissociated structure has the internal conformation, in contrast to the surface conformation for the (H2O)21 cluster, whereas the dissociated structure of NH3(H2O)20 has the surface conformation. As the cluster size of (H2O)n/NH3(H2O)n-1 increases, the difference in standard free energy between undissociated and dissociated (ion-pair) clusters is asymptotically well corroborated with the experimental free energy change at infinite dilution of H3O+/NH4+ and OH-. The predicted NH and OH stretching frequencies of the undissociated and dissociated (ion-pair) clusters are discussed.  相似文献

The PM3 quantum-mechanical method is able to model the magic water clusters (H2O)20 and (H2O)21H+. Results indicate that the H3O+ ion is tightly bound within the (H2O)20 cluster by multiple hydrogen bonds, causing deformation to the symmetric (H2O)20 pentagonal dodecahedron structure. The structures, energetics, and hydrogen bond patterns of six local minima (H2O)21H+ clusters are presented. © John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The kinetics for conversion of NO(+)(H(2)O)(n) to H(3)O(+)(H(2)O)(n) has been investigated as a function of temperature from 150 to 400 K. In contrast to previous studies, which show that the conversion goes completely through a reaction of NO(+)(H(2)O)(3), the present results show that NO(+)(H(2)O)(4) plays an increasing role in the conversion as the temperature is lowered. Rate constants are derived for the clustering of H(2)O to NO(+)(H(2)O)(1-3) and the reactions of NO(+)(H(2)O)(3,4) with H(2)O to form H(3)O(+)(H(2)O)(2,3), respectively. In addition, thermal dissociation of NO(+)(H(2)O)(4) to lose HNO(2) was also found to be important. The rate constants for the clustering increase substantially with the lowering of the temperature. Flux calculations show that NO(+)(H(2)O)(4) accounts for over 99% of the conversion at 150 K and even 20% at 300 K, although it is too small to be detectable. The experimental data are complimented by modeling of the falloff curves for the clustering reactions. The modeling shows that, for many of the conditions, the data correspond to the falloff regime of third body association.  相似文献

Pyridine containing water clusters, H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n), have been studied both experimentally by a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer and by quantum chemical calculations. In the experiments, H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n) with m = 1-4 and n = 0-80 are observed. For the cluster distributions observed, there are no magic numbers, neither in the abundance spectra, nor in the evaporation spectra from size selected clusters. Experiments with size-selected clusters H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n), with m = 0-3, reacting with D(2)O at a center-of-mass energy of 0.1 eV were also performed. The cross-sections for H/D isotope exchange depend mainly on the number of water molecules in the cluster and not on the number of pyridine molecules. Clusters having only one pyridine molecule undergo D(2)O/H(2)O ligand exchange, while H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n), with m = 2, 3, exhibit significant H/D scrambling. These results are rationalized by quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP and MP2) for H(+)(pyridine)(1)(H(2)O)(n) and H(+)(pyridine)(2)(H(2)O)(n), with n = 1-6. In clusters containing one pyridine, the water molecules form an interconnected network of hydrogen bonds associated with the pyridinium ion via a single hydrogen bond. For clusters containing two pyridines, the two pyridine molecules are completely separated by the water molecules, with each pyridine being positioned diametrically opposite within the cluster. In agreement with experimental observations, these calculations suggest a "see-saw mechanism" for pendular proton transfer between the two pyridines in H(+)(pyridine)(2)(H(2)O)(n) clusters.  相似文献

Semi-empirical molecular orbital methods proposed up to now seriously fail to describe hydrogen bonded systems associated with (H2O) n . A new scheme of parametrization using a semi-empirical method is proposed. We tested hydrogen bonding associated with the water clusters (H2O) n . The results are found to be close to ab initio Hartree-Fock quality, indicating a good promise for studying hydrogen-bonding systems other than O-H...O moiety.  相似文献

The structures of electron-bound and neutral clusters of HF(H2O)n (n=1-3) were optimized at the level of second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2). Then, the energies were studied using the coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples correction [CCSD(T)] method. The vertical detachment energies of the electron-bound clusters for n=1-3 are 60, 180, and approximately 300 meV, respectively. In the case of the n=3, two structures are competing energetically. The electron-bound clusters for n=1 and 2 are 1.5 and 1.8 kcal/mol more stable than the neutral, while that for n=3 is 0.6-0.9 kcal/mol less stable. The excess electron is stabilized in the surface-bound state of the dipole oriented structures of the hydrated acid clusters. Vibrational spectra of the electron-bound clusters are discussed.  相似文献

Structure, energy enthalpy, and IR frequency of hydrated cesium ion clusters, Cs+-(H2O)n (n=1-10), are reported based on all electron calculations. Calculations have been carried out with a hybrid density functional, namely, Becke's three-parameter nonlocal hybrid exchange-correlation functional B3LYP applying cc-PVDZ correlated basis function for H and O atoms and a split valence 3-21G basis function for Cs atom. Geometry optimizations for all the cesium ion-water clusters have been carried out with several possible initial guess structures following Newton-Raphson procedure leading to many conformers close in energy. The calculated values of binding enthalpy obtained from present density functional based all electron calculations are in good agreement with the available measured data. Binding enthalpy profile of the hydrated clusters shows a saturation behavior indicating geometrical shell closing in hydrated structure. Significant shifts of O-H stretching bands with respect to free water molecule in IR spectra of hydrated clusters are observed in all the hydrated clusters.  相似文献

We have studied the protonated ether-(H2O)n (n = 1-3) complexes containing tetrahydrofuran, dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl, and butylmethyl ethers using a flowing afterglow triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. Collision-induced dissociation, CID, of all clusters with n = 1, 2 shows sequential water loss. The n = 3 cluster of dimethyl ether shows sequential water loss, while all other ether clusters display selective product formation. The CID spectra are interpreted based on known energetics, and theoretical studies of the dimethyl and diethyl ether systems.  相似文献

High-level quantum-chemical ab initio coupled-cluster and multiconfigurational perturbation methods have been used to compute the vertical and adiabatic ionization potentials of several water clusters: dimer, trimer, tetramer, pentamer, hexamer book, hexamer ring, hexamer cage, and hexamer prism. The present results establish reference values at a level not reported before for these systems, calibrating different computational strategies and helping to discard less reliable theoretical and experimental data. The systematic study with the increasing size of the water cluster allows obtaining some clues on the structure and reductive properties of liquid water.  相似文献

We employed a four-step searching/screening approach to determine best candidates for the global minima of (H2O)11 and (H2O)13. This approach can be useful when there exist a large number of low-lying and near-isoenergetic isomers, many of which have the same oxygen-skeleton structure. On the two new candidates for the global minimum of (H2O)11, one isomer can be viewed as placing the 11th molecule onto the side of the global minimum of (H2O)10 and the other can be viewed as removing the 12th molecule from the middle layer of the global minimum of (H2O)12. The three leading lowest-energy clusters of (H2O)13 can all be built starting from the global minimum of (H2O)12, with the difference being in the location of the 13th water molecule.  相似文献

Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy is reported for mass-selected Ni+ (H2O)n complexes in the O-H stretching region up to cluster sizes of n = 25. These clusters fragment by the loss of one or more intact water molecules, and their excitation spectra show distinct bands in the region of the symmetric and asymmetric stretches of water. The first evidence for hydrogen bonding, indicated by a broad band strongly red-shifted from the free OH region, appears at the cluster size of n = 4. At larger cluster sizes, additional red-shifted structure evolves over a broader wavelength range in the hydrogen-bonding region. In the free OH region, the symmetric stretch gradually diminishes in intensity, while the asymmetric stretch develops into a closely spaced doublet near 3700 cm(-1). The data indicate that essentially all of the water molecules are in a hydrogen-bonded network by the size of n = 10. However, there is no evidence for the formation of clathrate structures seen recently via IR spectroscopy of protonated water clusters.  相似文献

Ab initio Hartree–Fock calculations are performed on hydrates of the F? and Cl? ions using 6-31G, 6-31G**, and 6-21G basis sets. Geometries and binding energies are obtained. An estimate of the correlation energy is provided by an MP2/6-31G (Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation) calculation. Comparisons are made between the Cl?(SO2) and the Cl?(H2O) complexes.  相似文献

In this paper the structures of 4-aminophenol(H2O)1+ and 3-aminophenol(H2O)1+ clusters are investigated in molecular beam experiments by different IR/UV-double resonance techniques as well as the mass analyzed threshold ionization spectroscopy yielding both inter- and intramolecular vibrations of the ionic and neutral species. Possible structures are extensively calculated at the level of density functional theory (DFT) or at the ab initio level of theory. From the experimental and theoretical investigations it can be concluded that in the case of 4-aminophenol(H2O)1 one O-H...O hydrogen-bonded structure exists in the neutral cluster but two structures containing either an O-H...O or a N-H...O hydrogen-bonded arrangement are observed in the spectra of the ionic species. This observation is a result of an intramolecular rearrangement reaction within the ion which can only take place if high excess energies are used. A reaction path via the CH bonds is calculated and explains the experimental observations. In the case of 3-aminophenol(H2O)1+ only one O-H...O bound structure is observed both in the neutral and ionic species. Ab initio and DFT calculations show that due to geometrical and energetical reasons a rearrangement cannot be observed in the 3-aminophenol(H2O)1+ cluster ion.  相似文献

The Gaussian-3 (G3) model chemistry method has been used to calculate the relative deltaG(o) values for all possible conformers of neutral clusters of water, (H2O)n, where n = 3-5. A complete 12-fold conformational search around each hydrogen bond produced 144, 1728, and 20,736 initial starting structures of the water trimer, tetramer, and pentamer. These structures were optimized with PM3, followed by HF/6-31G* optimization, and then with the G3 model chemistry. Only two trimers are present on the G3 potential energy hypersurface. We identified 5 tetramers and 10 pentamers on the potential energy and free-energy hypersurfaces at 298 K. None of these 17 structures were linear; all linear starting models folded into cyclic or three-dimensional structures. The cyclic pentamer is the most stable isomer at 298 K. On the basis of this and previous studies, we expect the cyclic tetramers and pentamers to be the most significant cyclic water clusters in the atmosphere.  相似文献

An experimental and theoretical study of the photoionization energies (IE's) of Ba(H(2)O)(n) clusters containing up to n = 4 water molecules has been performed. The clusters were generated by a pick-up source combining laser vaporization with pulsed supersonic expansion, and then photoionized by radiation of 272.5-340 nm. The experimentally determined IE(e)'s for n = 1 to 4 are 4.56 ± 0.05, 4.26 ± 0.05, 3.90 ± 0.05 and 3.71 ± 0.05 eV. This cluster size dependence of IE is reproduced within ±0.06 eV employing the mPW1PW91 density-functional and CCSD(T, Full) quantum-chemical methods combined with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set for the H and O atoms and three different relativistic effective core potentials for Ba atoms. The calculations indicate that the lowest energy hydration structures represent the most relevant contributions to both the vertical and adiabatic ionization energies. Experimental and theoretical evidence correlates with the progressive surface-delocalization of the electron from the hydration cavity around the Ba atom and suggests that the intra-cluster electron transfer is possible even for small aggregates.  相似文献

We report the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and the resonant two-photon ionization spectra of the carbazole-(H2O)n (n = 1–3) hydrogen-bonded complexes. Use of carbazole as a symmetric “probe” molecule allows detailed insight into the symmetries, structures and intermolecular vibrations of these microhydrate complexes.  相似文献

In an attempt to understand the phase behavior of aqueous hydrogen fluoride, the clustering in the mixture is investigated at the molecular level. The study is performed at the mPW1B95/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. Several previous studies attempted to describe the dissociation of HF in water, but in this investigation, the focus is only on the association patterns that are present in this binary mixture. A total of 214 optimized geometries of (HF)n(H2O)m clusters, with m + n as high as 8, were investigated. For each cluster combination, several different conformations are investigated, and the preferred conformations are presented. Using multiple linear regressions, the average strengths of the four possible H-bonding interactions are obtained. The strongest H-bond interaction is reported to be the H2O...H-F interaction. The most probable distributions of mixed clusters as a function of composition are also deduced. It is found that the larger (HF)n(H2O)m clusters are favored both energetically and entropically compared to the ones that are of size m + n < or = 3. Also, the clusters with equimolar contributions of HF and H2O are found to have the strongest interactions.  相似文献
