We report the synthesis, X-ray diffraction results and electro-optical switching measurements for a bent-shaped mesogen having two non-mesogenic units linked by an alkylene spacer. The novelty of the molecular structure lies in the carbonyl group of the ester linkage being directly attached to the spacer unit, unlike for banana-shaped molecules reported so far, in which it is one oxygen atom away from the spacer or the central aromatic unit. The compound shows two mesophases: the high temperature mesophase is a tilted smectic phase showing ferroelectric switching characteristics; the low temperature phase is more highly ordered with textural features similar to that of the B3 banana phase.  相似文献

In a liquid crystalline side chain polyacrylate containing one center of chirality in the terminal alkyl chain of the mesogenic part, switching times of 200–400 μs were measured in the SmC* phase. Below this phase an unidentified phase exists, which shows electroclinic-like switching. The phase transition between those two phases can be shifted by applying an electric field. At higher molecular weights three subphases emerge in the SmC* region. Variation of the spacer length revealed, for the first time, ferroelectric switching even at a spacer length of only two CH2 groups. By shifting the centre of chirality into the spacer of the side group a polymer resulted, which shows electroclinic switching in the SmC* phase, changing to ferroelectric switching when the voltage is increased. Incorporation of an oxirane ring as chiral building block into the spacer yielded a polymer that shows a sign inversion of the spontaneous polarization in the SmC* phase. A polymer containing a dioxolane carbonic ester as chiral unit exhibits three switching states, with the third state existing at a low or zero electric field. This phenomenon is known for antiferroelectric liquid crystals. By doping a racemic LC polymer with a chiral monomeric LC we induced a spontaneous polarization. Colored FLC polymers were obtained by two different approaches. In an FLC–dye copolymer, increasing switching speed in three different chiral smectic phases was observed when increasing the dye concentration.  相似文献

Diarylethene is a photochromic molecule, which is potentially applicable to various optoelectronic devices. In diarylethenes the π-system of the two aryl rings is separated in the open-ring isomer, while the π-system is delocalized throughout the molecule in the closed-ring isomer. Based on this idea the exchange interaction between two nitronyl nitroxide radicals connected by a diarylethene unit was photocontrolled reversibly along with photochromism. The switching efficiency is more than 150-fold and thiophene spacer transmits the interaction more efficiently. When diarylethene dimer is used for the switching unit, the electric circuit-like behavior was observed. Moreover, reversed switching is achieved by reversing the thiophene ring. Magnetochemical and photochemical behavior of the radical-substituted diarylethene is described extensively.  相似文献

Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers containing both mesogenic (carbazolylmethylene)aniline and (4′-nitrobenzylidene)aniline units with various spacer groups were prepared to examine effects of the structure of spacer groups on the liquid crystalline properties. The copolymer containing (R)-(+)-2-methylpropylene as a chiral group in the spacer unit induced a smectic phase; the copolymer with a trimethylene spacer of similar length to the chiral spacer exhibited a nematic phase. Smectic phases were observed for the copolymer containing the chiral spacer group when the proportion of the carbazolyl group was in the range of 0.55–0.88. For example, the copolymer with the proportion of the carbazolyl group of 0.68 expressed the smectic phase from 88° to 167°C. This isotropic temperature was 37° higher than the calculated value (130°C) based on an assumed copolymer composition without the electron donor–acceptor interaction. Thus, it is assumed that for the chiral copolymer containing both electron donor and acceptor groups, the thermal stability and the induction of the smectic phase were caused by both the electron donor–acceptor interaction and the existence of the chiral group in the spacer unit. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Four series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing oligooxyethylene spacers have been synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical polarized microscopy (POM). The properties of the liquid crystalline phase were investigated as a function of spacer units, numbers of core aromatic rings, and different terminal asymmetric moieties. It was found that (i) the phase transition temperature decreased with the increasing oligooxyethylene spacer unit, (ii) the liquid crystalline phases were enhanced in three phenyl ring system than in two phenyl ring system, and (iii) ferroelectric liquid crystals containing different terminal asymmetric moieties exhibited novel mesophase phenomena. A twist grain boundary phase (TGBA phase) was observed in some compounds of this study. Furthermore, a wide temperature chiral smectic Crange including room temperature was achieved.  相似文献

Two-station [2]rotaxanes in the shape of a degenerate naphthalene (NP) shuttle and a nondegenerate monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene (MPTTF)/NP redox-controllable switch have been synthesized and characterized in solution. Their dumbbell-shaped components are composed of polyether chains interrupted along their lengths by (i) two pi-electron-rich stations-two NP moieties or a MPTTF unit and a NP moiety-with (ii) a rigid arylethynyl or butadiynyl spacer situated between the two stations and terminated by (iii) flexibly tethered hydrophobic stoppers at each end of the dumbbells. This modification was investigated as a means to simplify both molecular structure and switching function previously observed in related bistable [2]rotaxanes with flexible spacers between their stations and incorporating a cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT4+) ring. The nondegenerate MPTTF-NP switch was isolated as near isomer-free bistable [2]rotaxane. Utilization of MPTTF removes the cis/trans isomerization that characterizes the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) parent core structure. Furthermore, only one translational isomer is observed (> 95 < 5), surprisingly across a wide temperature range (198-323 K), meaning that the CBPQT4+ ring component resides, to all intents and purposes, predominantly on the MPTTF unit in the ground state. As a consequence of these two effects, the assignment of NMR and UV-vis data is more simplified as compared to previous donor-acceptor bistable [2]rotaxanes. This development has not only allowed for much better control over the position of the ring component in the ground state but also for control over the location of the CBPQT4+ ring during solution-state switching experiments, triggered either chemically (1H NMR) or electrochemically (cyclic voltammetry). In this instance, the use of the rigid spacer defines an unambiguous distance of 1.5 nm over which the ring moves between the MPTTF and NP units. The degenerate NP/NP [2]rotaxane was used to investigate the shuttling barrier by dynamic 1H NMR spectroscopy for the movement of the CBPQT4+ ring across the new rigid spacer. It is evident from these measurements that the rigid spacer poses a much lower barrier to the 1.0 nm movement of the CBPQT4+ ring from one station to another as compared with previous systems-a finding that is thought to be a result of the combination of fewer favorable interactions between the spacer and the CBPQT4+ ring and a relatively unimpeded path between the two NP stations. This example augers well for exploiting rigidity during the development of well-defined bistable [2]rotaxanes, which are unencumbered by the excesses of structural conformations that have characterized the first generations of molecular switches based on the donor-acceptor recognition motif.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline (LC) properties of two series of non-symmetric dimesogenic compounds consisting of cholesterol and azobenzene-based moieties interconnected by ω-oxyalkanoyl spacers of varying length are compared: one series (AOC-n) has an octyloxy chain attached to the azobenzene mesogen unit while the other (AOCF-n) has a perfluoroheptylmethyloxy chain. In general, compounds bearing the fluorinated alkoxy chain exhibited LC properties over a much broader temperature range than those with the alkoxy chain. In addition, the AOC-n series exhibited the chiral smectic C (SmC*), smectic A (SmA) and cholesteric (N*) phases depending on the length of the central spacer, whereas the AOCF-n series favoured the formation of only the SmA phase with the N* phase completely suppressed. Both series showed an odd-even dependence of the isotropization temperature on spacer length.  相似文献

A new series of ferroelectric liquid crystals and side chain liquid crystalline polymers based on halogen-containing chiral centres has been synthesized. Chemical structures were analysed by NMR. Liquid crystal phases were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The behaviour of the liquid crystalline phases was investigated as a function of spacer units and differing terminal asymmetric moieties. It was found that phase transition temperatures decreased with increasing length of the oligooxyethylene spacer unit. Differing terminal asymmetric moieties led to differing mesophase phenomena. Furthermore, a wide temperature range (including room temperature) of a chiral smectic C phase was achieved.  相似文献

Two homologous series of λ-shaped chiral liquid crystal trimers composed of a laterally substituted benzylidene-aniline as the central core armed by two cholestryl ester moieties via odd-even alkyl spacer are synthesised. All the compounds are mesogenic exhibiting both chiral nematic (N*) and SmA phases except for trimers bearing long spacers (n = 9–10). A pronounced odd-even effect is observed on the phase transition temperatures and clearing enthalpies when the spacer length is varied in which the even-parity members show higher value. The widening of N* phase upon elongation of the alkyl spacer can be interpreted as a result of the destabilisation of SmA phase. Full recrystallisation from the cholesteric phase upon cooling is not observed for all the compounds bearing long spacer, especially oxydecanoyl spacer. Instead, the anisotropic fluid vitrified to form the cholesteric glassy state characteristic of polymer at low temperature. This finding is also evident from the polarising optical microscope whereby non-crystalline texture which resembles the Grandjean texture with various reflection colours is observed upon cooling to low temperature. The effect of the lateral substituents on the liquid-crystalline behaviour is also discussed.  相似文献

Recently, we reported that a rod-like molecule, 4-[4-(7-hydroxyheptyloxy)phenyl]-1-(4-hexylphenyl)-2,3-difluorobenzene, exhibited a nematic phase with a layered structure and smectic C phases consisting of three states. We prepared a homologous series of the rod-like molecules in which a 2,3-difluoro-1,4-diphenylbenzene unit and a hydroxyl unit are connected via a flexible methylene spacer. We investigated their physical properties using polarised optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Although they showed nematic, smectic A and smectic C phases, the phase structures were found to depend on the flexible spacer length. Those compounds possessing a shorter spacer length than a heptyl unit exhibited bilayered smectic A and smectic C phases, whereas those possessing a longer spacer length than a heptyl unit showed conventional monolayered smectic A and smectic C phases. A nematic phase with a smectic-like layer ordering was observed for the compound possessing an octyl unit. The structure–property relations of the amphiphilic compounds are discussed.  相似文献

Photochromic liquid‐crystalline copolymers consisting of a photochromic monomeric unit containing both a spironaphthoxazine group and an undecamethylene spacer, and a liquid‐crystalline monomeric unit containing both a cholesteryl group and a decamethylene spacer were prepared to investigate the effect of the thermal properties of the photochromic monomeric unit on the mesomorphic order of the side chain of the related copolymers. The photochromic liquid‐crystalline copolymers containing a photochromic liquid‐crystalline monomeric unit showed only a smectic phase. On the other hand, the photochromic liquid‐crystalline copolymers containing a photochromic non‐liquid‐crystalline monomeric unit showed a chiral nematic phase (cholesteric phase). The photochromic chiral nematic liquid‐crystalline copolymer containing 14 mol % photochromic monomeric unit reflected visible light around 104 °C. To lower the temperature range of reflection of visible light, cholesteryl oleyl carbonate was used as a chiral nematic plasticizer for the photochromic chiral liquid‐crystalline polymer systems. Photo‐induced pitch change of the mixture by means of UV irradiation was investigated and it was concluded that the pitch change observed under UV irradiation was mainly induced by thermal effect in the case of our system. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A liquid crystalline polyester with a decamethyene flexible spacer and a mesogenic unit containing a central 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene ring was prepared for comparison with the equivalent polymer containing a central p-phenylene ring in the mesogen. Both polymers formed a nematic phase on melting, and as expected, the former had a much lower isotropization temperature than the latter. The polymer containing the bicyclooctylene ring, however, showed a batonnet texture, indicative of a smectic phase, at a temperature above that of the nematic state, especially on cooling from the isotropic melt.  相似文献

In this paper, we report the study of a new series of symmetric chiral liquid crystalline siloxane dimers, their related monomers, and two of those monomers with heptamethyltrisiloxane attached. All the dimers coupled with a trisiloxane show the SmCA phase, which in several cases has a large tilt angle greater than 40° over a wide temperature range, as well as high spontaneous polarisation in the field‐induced ferroelectric state. Spacer lengths of 3–6 and 11 carbons between the siloxane central unit and the mesogenic cores were used. Monomers with 3–6 carbons in the spacer showed only orthogonal phases while the monomer with an 11‐carbon spacer, as well as the monomers with siloxane attached, have a high tilt angle ferroelectric phase. The materials were characterized by means of DSC, NMR, X‐ray diffraction, electro‐optical methods (tilt angle and texture characterization) and polarization measurements.  相似文献

The new acrylate monomers 4-(ω-acryloyloxyalkyloxy)-N-(9-methyl-2-carbazolylmethylene) anilines containing from 2 to 11 methylenic units in their alkyl group and a carbazolyl group in the mesogenic unit were synthesized and polymerized by azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as radical initiator and by low-energy electron beam (EB) initiation. The thermal properties of the resulting polymers were examined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal optical polarizing microscopy. The polymer prepared by AIBN with a hexamethylene spacer exhibited a nematic phase from 73 to 170°C and with an undecamethylene spacer exhibited a smectic phase from 55 to 202°C. The isotropization temperature of the polyacrylates increased with increasing the number of carbons of the methylenic spacer. The yield of the resulting polymer was changed by EB irradiation temperature from 4.5 to 41%. The highest yield was obtained when the monomer was polymerized in a liquid-crystalline phase. The same tendency was observed in the molecular weight of the resulting polymers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Two series of novel liquid crystalline photo-crosslinkable bis(vanillylidene-azobenzene) cycloalkanone containing polymers, namely poly(vanillylidene alkyloxy-4,4'-azobenzenedicarboxylic ester)s, have been synthesised from bis[m-hydroxyalkyloxy(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone] (m = 6, 8, 10) with azobenzene dicarbonylchloride by solution polycondensation method at ambient temperature. Polymers with varying spacer lengths have been synthesised and characterised by spectroscopic techniques. These variations have been correlated with the thermal properties and transition temperatures. Thermal transitions were analysed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the mesophases were identified by hot stage optical polarised microscopy (HOPM). All of the polymers were found to exhibit liquid crystalline properties. Transition temperatures were observed to decrease with increasing spacer length. The thermogravimetric analysis reveals that all of the polymers were stable up to 280°C undergo two-stage decomposition. Using the UV-visible photolysis studies we investigated the simultaneous behaviour of reactivity rates of crosslinking in the vanillylidene unit and isomerisation caused by the azobenzene unit in the photo-crosslinkable main chain liquid crystalline polymers. The photolysis of liquid crystalline bis(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone-based polymers reveals that there are two kinds of photoreactions in these systems: the EZ photoisomerisation of azobenzene unit and 2p+2p addition by vanillylidene units. The EZ photoisomerisation in the liquid crystal phase disrupts the parallel stacking of the mesogens, resulting in the transition from the liquid crystal phase to isotropic phase. The photoreaction involving 2p+2p addition of the bis(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone units in the polymers results in the conjoining of the chains. The cyclopentanone polymers exhibited a faster rate of photolysis than the cyclohexanone polymers.  相似文献

A series of copolymers containing triad ester mesogenic units, with pendent n-octyl substituents, and triad ester nonmesogenic units, both with flexible spacer groups, was prepared and characterized for the effect of the nonmesogenic unit content on transition temperatures and thermodynamic parameters. The mesophase temperature range increased, but temperature, enthalpy, and entropy of isotropization decreased in a linear manner with increasing nonmesogen comonomer content. The entropy of isotropization is considered to be a quantitative measure of the degree of order of the nematic phase, but this order may include both the amount and the order parameter of the mesophase if, as proposed, both the isotropic and nematic phase exist below the isotropization temperatures of the copolymers.  相似文献

A homologous series of siloxane based dimesogens was synthesized in racemic and enantiomeric form. The flexible part of the core is composed of a central hexamethyltrisiloxane unit and two polymethylene chains of variable length. Increasing the number of methylene units in the core promotes smectic phase behaviour whose polymorphism was studied by polarization optical microscopy. Transitions into metastable phases were detected and investigated by differential scanning calorimetry using different heating rates. Information about the crystallization tendency was obtained from annealing experiments by changing annealing temperature and duration. In contrast to short dimesogenic homologues which predominantly showed monomesogen-like behaviour, polymer-like behaviour was observed for the longer homologues. Small angle X-ray diffraction provided data on the temperature dependence of the smectic layer spacing of mesogens and their corresponding dimesogens linked by the siloxane spacer. No significant differences between the layer spacings of the two classes of compounds were detected which suggests chain folding in the dimesogenic compounds and a similar mesogenic orientation for the mesogens and dimesogens.  相似文献
