This paper proposes a new medium access protocol (MAC) protocol for futurewireless multimedia personal communication systems, denoted hybrid andadaptive multiple access control (HAMAC) protocol. The HAMAC protocolintegrates fixed assignment TDMA protocol, reservation-based protocols, andcontention-based protocols into a single wireless network so as tosimultaneously and efficiently support various classes of traffic such asconstant-bit-rate (CBR), variable-bit-rate (VBR), and available-bit-rate (ABR)traffic. In particular, the HAMAC protocol uses a novel preservationslot technique to overcome the packet contention overhead in packetreservation multiple access (PRMA) like protocols, while keeping mostisochronous service features of TDMA protocols to serve voice and CBR trafficstreams. A preservation slot is a very short slot which is used torepresent a CBR connection when the traffic in the CBR connection is in asilent period in which there is no meaningful data to transmit. Due to thevery short length of the preservation slot, it only takes minimalportion of the bandwidth pre-allocated to the CBR connection, so that theremaining bandwidth can be freed for other connections to use. When the CBRsource becomes active again, the preservation slot is replaced bynormal data slots without any reservation operation, extra delay, orsignificant bandwidth loss. Consequently, the guaranteed service andsimplified signaling features of TDMA protocols, together with the adaptivebandwidth allocation features of PRMA-like protocols, are both realized in theHAMAC protocol. We have analyzed the performance of the HAMAC protocol usingextensive simulations. The results show that the HAMAC protocol can achievevery low loss rates for various multimedia traffic with stringent quality ofservice (QoS) requirements and outperforms state-of-the-art PRMA-likeprotocols. As a result, the HAMAC protocol appears to be a good candidate forfuture generation multimedia personal communication systems.  相似文献

Packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) improves capacity in microcellular systems compared with time division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency division multiple access (FDMA). In PRMA, when a mobile terminal has information packets to transmit, it contends with other terminals for access to a common radio channel. Therefore the main performance degradation is due to the collision of terminals simultaneously transmitting packets. In this paper we propose a non-collision PRMA (NC-PRMA) protocol with signatures to achieve a better performance than PRMA does. Two classes of duplexing schemes, frequency division duplexing (FDD) and shared time division duplexing (STDD), are explored and two speech activity models, slow and fast, in both FDD and STDD schemes are studied. From the results of a computer simulation it is observed that, with the constraint of a packet-dropping rate no greater than 0·01, NC-PRMA can support 38 (43) and 45 (49) users respectively under the FDD and STDD schemes if the slow (fast) speech activity detector is adopted. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

信道接入协议(MAC)是无线数据通信协议的重要组成部分。由于无线信道是一个开放、共享的信道,网络节点在通信过程中存在隐终端和暴露终端问题。基于目前无线通信常用的MAC协议存在的问题,着重分析了基于扩频码的信道接入协议,该协议利用扩频码的正变特性,使得网络中各节点可以同时占用信道而互不干扰,较好地解决了信道争用问题,提高了系统效率。同时指出,在选择MAC协议时,应根据无线网络的拓扑结构及特点灵活选择,以提高网络性能。  相似文献

本文基于有效竞争预约接入、无冲突轮询传输的思想提出了在多跳分布式无线网络中支持节点移动性和多跳网络结构的依据用户妥善安排的多址接入(UPMA)协议.该协议能够保证发送节点快速接入信道,从而大大提高信道的使用效率.用仿真方法研究了多跳分布式无线网络中采用该协议时的网络性能.结果表明,UPMA协议可以提供较高的通过量、较低的平均分组时延和较小的平均分组丢失率.  相似文献

Next generation high capacity wireless networks need to support various types of traffic, including voice, video and data, each of which have different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for successful transmission. This paper presents an advanced reservation packet access protocol BRTDMA (Block Reservation Time Division Multiple Access) that can accommodate voice and data traffic with equal efficiency in a wireless network. The proposed BRTDMA protocol has been designed to operate in a dynamic fashion by allocating resources according to the QoS criteria of voice and data traffic. Most of the existing reservation protocols offers reservation to voice traffic while data packets are transmitted using contention mode. In this paper we propose a block reservation technique to reserve transmission slots for data traffic for a short duration, which minimizes the speech packet loss and reduce the end-to-end delay for wireless data traffic. The optimum block reservation length for data traffic has been studied in a cellular mobile radio environment using a simulation model. Simulation results show that the BRTDMA protocol offers higher traffic capacity than standard PRMA protocol for integrated voice and data traffic and offers flexibility in accommodating multimedia traffic.  相似文献

On Providing Support for Protocol Adaptation in Mobile Wireless Networks   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The availability of variety of communication devices offers a choice among networks with vastly different characteristics. No single protocol or application can be expected to perform well over all these networks. A mobile host is likely to encounter these different networks and needs to adapt accordingly. The problem of adapting to a changing network environment is further complicated, because changes in network conditions are usually transparent to higher layers of the protocol stack. In order to allow automatic adaptation of applications and protocols, awareness of link conditions and network environment is necessary. In this paper, we present a uniform mechanism based on ICMP messages for providing information about the environment to the protocol stack. We also show how protocols can adapt to changes in the environment, and in particular, demonstrate dynamic fine tuning of some of the well known protocols such as UDP and TCP. Performance measurements demonstrate that our framework imposes little overheads and improves protocol performance under changing network conditions.  相似文献

An energy-efficient adaptive-transmission protocol for mobile frequency-hop spread-spectrum wireless communication networks is described and evaluated. The purpose of the protocol is to permit each of the mobile terminals to adjust its transmitter power and code rate to match the characteristics of the time-varying communication links in the network. The proposed adaptive-transmission protocol bases its choice of transmission parameters on a very simple form of side information that is easy to obtain in a FH communication receiver. The performance of the adaptive-transmission protocol is evaluated for networks in which each communication link may have a time-varying propagation loss and intermittent partial-band interference. Our results demonstrate that the adaptive-transmission protocol can improve the utility of a link and reduce energy consumption by adjusting the transmission parameters in response to changes in the side information.  相似文献

针对现有太赫兹无线个域网定向MAC协议存在的波束训练开销和入网时延偏大以及Beacon, S-CAP时段时隙利用不足问题,该文提出一种自适应的定向MAC协议——AD-MAC,自适应地在静态场景下采用全网协同波束训练,在动态场景下节点基于历史信息快速回复波束训练帧,同时使用反向监听策略减小同扇区节点的帧碰撞概率,并且通过时隙复用在Beacon和S-CAP时段并行发送控制帧和数据帧。理论分析表明了AD-MAC协议的有效性,仿真结果显示:相较于ENLBT-MAC等典型协议,AD-MAC在静态场景下的波束训练开销和节点平均入网时延分别降低了约21.84%和22.70%,在动态场景下上述二指标则分别减小了约18.7%和13.07%。

无线传感器网络是一种由大量廉价微型传感器节点组成,并通过无线通信方式形成的多跳自组织网络,可用于对其部署区域的某些物理量进行智能监测。由于传感器节点数目较大,MAC协议是保证无线传感器网络高效通信的关键网络协议之一。另一方面,因为传感器节点受到电源能量有限、通信能力有限、计算和存储能力有限等现实条件的限制,传感器网络中的MAC协议又具有一些独特之处。对无线传感器网络MAC协议的研究现状进行较全面的考察,分析比较其中的几种典型MAC协议,并提出了该领域的发展趋势和未来工作的一些思路。  相似文献

All mobile stations (STAs) in IEEE 802.11 infrastructure wireless local area networks (IWLAN) are coordinated by an access point (AP). Within the 2.4 GHz unlicensed industry, science, and medicine (ISM) band defined in the IEEE 802.11 2.4 GHz physical layer (PHY) specifications, three channels are available for concurrently transferring data packets at the coverage area of an AP. In most of small/medium enterprises or home environments, an AP with one selected channel is sufficient for covering whole service area, but this implies that the radio resources for the remaining two channels are wasted. In order to overcome the drawback, we propose a new and simple media access control (MAC) protocol, named wireless switch protocol (WSP), for increasing the throughput of IEEE 802.11 IWLAN network to support high quality multimedia traffic. This is achieved by allowing any pair of STAs in IWLAN to exchange data packets in one of other idle channels after their handshake with each other in the common channel controlled by AP. Simulation results show that the total network throughput of WSP depends on the time taken by channel switching, and on the ‘Intranet’ and ‘Internet’ traffic distribution, where the Intranet and Internet mean data transmission between STAs in IWLAN and between the STA and wired host, respectively. When all data packets are Intranet traffic and the traffic load is heavy, the ratio of Goodput for the proposed WSP to that of IEEE 802.11 standard approximates 400%. In the worse case of all Internet traffic, the proposed WSP still obtains the similar throughput as that of IEEE 802.11 standard.Jenhui Chen was born on October 12, 1971 in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China. The growing interest in mobile computing and communication devices leads to the necessity of wireless broadband network. Data transmission over such networks requires suitable error control schemes to guarantee high data reliability as well as efficient bandwidth utilization.In this paper we propose an accurate yet simple analytical approach to evaluate the performance of wireless networks using gated and exhaustive polling protocols combined with the Stop and Wait (SW) or Go Back N (GBN) ARQ schemes [Bertsekas and Gallager, 2]. Moreover, simulation results concerning the performance of polling protocols combined with the Selective Repeat (SR) ARQ scheme are also shown for comparison purposes.Protocol performance is estimated under very general assumptions, such as: AWGN or fading channels, arbitrary value of the round trip delay and arbitrary distribution of the traffic load (i.e., both symmetric or asymmetric system have been considered).  相似文献

Wireless Local Area Networks have gained popularity at an unprecedented rate over the last few years. However, as the spectrum of applications they are called to support broadens, their inefficiency in meeting the diverse requirements of a wider range of applications becomes evident. Most existing access mechanisms cannot provide Quality-of-Service (QoS) assurances. Even those that are QoS aware can only provide relative service differentiation. In this work, we propose a dynamic priority medium access scheme to provide time-bounded services. By approximating an ideal Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduler, the proposed scheme can offer delay and delay jitter assurances while achieving high medium utilization. Analytical studies and simulation experiments document and confirm the positive characteristics of the proposed mechanism. Orestis Tsigkas received his Diploma in electrical and computer engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2002. He is currently working towards his Ph.D. degree in the same department. His research interests include medium access, as well as quality-of-service provisioning. Fotini-Niovi Pavlidou received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1988 and the Diploma in mechanical-electrical engineering in 1979 from the same institution. She is currently a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Aristotle University engaged in teaching for the under- and post-graduate program in the areas of mobile communications and telecommunications networks. Her research interests are in the field of mobile and personal communications, satellite communications, multiple access systems, routing and traffic flow in networks and QoS studies for multimedia applications over the Internet. She is being involved with many national and international projects in these areas (Tempus, COST, Telematics,IST) and she has been chairing the European COST262 Action on “Spread Spectrum Systems and Techniques for Wired and Wireless Communications”. She has served as member of the TPC in many IEEE/IEE conferences and she has organized/chaired some conferences like, the “IST Mobile Summit 2002”, the 6th “International Symposium on Power Lines Communications-ISPLC2002”, the “International Conference on Communications-ICT1998” etc. She is a permanent reviewer for many IEEE/IEE journals. She has published about 80 papers in refereed journals and conferences. She has served as guest-editor on special issues as: “Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs): Standards, Research, Applications” in the International Journal of Wireless Information Networks and “Power Line Communications and Applications” in the International Journal on Communications Systems. In this paper the performance of a packet mobile radio network is studied inthe presence of shadow fading outage intervals.Under quite general assumptions for the medium access protocol,the probability mass function of the sequence of packets that may be lostdue to an outage interval is derived. It is seen that long sequences of lostpackets are likely to occur for typical values of the mobile speed andshadowing correlation parameters.For delay constrained sources, e.g., voice, the analysis is mainly focused atderiving the probability function of the sequence of dropped packetsand the probability of dropping. For data sources, the delay statistic isalso derived. In the latter case, the effect of finite buffer length isaddressed. Simulation is used to verify the accuracy of approximations introduced in the analysis.  相似文献

在无线传感器网络中,基于簇的层次结构能够优化网络带宽的应用,提高共享信道的利用率,减少路由维护的代价以及提高应用的可扩展性,在路由、安全、网络管理等方面具有广泛的应用。基于此,分析研究了典型的基于簇的LEACH协议,并提出了LEACH协议几个可能的研究方向。  相似文献
