The Lagrangian function in the conventional theory for solving constrained optimization problems is a linear combination of the cost and constraint functions. Typically, the optimality conditions based on linear Lagrangian theory are either necessary or sufficient, but not both unless the underlying cost and constraint functions are also convex. We propose a somewhat different approach for solving a nonconvex inequality constrained optimization problem based on a nonlinear Lagrangian function. This leads to optimality conditions which are both sufficient and necessary, without any convexity assumption. Subsequently, under appropriate assumptions, the optimality conditions derived from the new nonlinear Lagrangian approach are used to obtain an equivalent root-finding problem. By appropriately defining a dual optimization problem and an alternative dual problem, we show that zero duality gap will hold always regardless of convexity, contrary to the case of linear Lagrangian duality.  相似文献

In this paper we show that a convexifiability property of nonconvex quadratic programs with nonnegative variables and quadratic constraints guarantees zero duality gap between the quadratic programs and their semi-Lagrangian duals. More importantly, we establish that this convexifiability is hidden in classes of nonnegative homogeneous quadratic programs and discrete quadratic programs, such as mixed integer quadratic programs, revealing zero duality gaps. As an application, we prove that robust counterparts of uncertain mixed integer quadratic programs with objective data uncertainty enjoy zero duality gaps under suitable conditions. Various sufficient conditions for convexifiability are also given.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for a zero duality gap between a primal optimization problem and its generalized augmented Lagrangian dual problems. The condition is mainly expressed in the form of the lower semicontinuity of a perturbation function at the origin. For a constrained optimization problem, a general equivalence is established for zero duality gap properties defined by a general nonlinear Lagrangian dual problem and a generalized augmented Lagrangian dual problem, respectively. For a constrained optimization problem with both equality and inequality constraints, we prove that first-order and second-order necessary optimality conditions of the augmented Lagrangian problems with a convex quadratic augmenting function converge to that of the original constrained program. For a mathematical program with only equality constraints, we show that the second-order necessary conditions of general augmented Lagrangian problems with a convex augmenting function converge to that of the original constrained program. This research is supported by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (PolyU B-Q359.)  相似文献

We provide a unifying geometric framework for the analysis of general classes of duality schemes and penalty methods for nonconvex constrained optimization problems. We present a separation result for nonconvex sets via general concave surfaces. We use this separation result to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for establishing strong duality between geometric primal and dual problems. Using the primal function of a constrained optimization problem, we apply our results both in the analysis of duality schemes constructed using augmented Lagrangian functions, and in establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of penalty methods.  相似文献

In this paper we study a class of nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming problems generalized from relaxations of quadratic assignment problems. We show that each problem is polynomially solved. Strong duality holds if a redundant constraint is introduced. As an application, a new lower bound is proposed for the quadratic assignment problem.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new notion of augmenting function known as indicator augmenting function to establish a minmax type duality relation, existence of a path of solution converging to optimal value and a zero duality gap relation for a nonconvex primal problem and the corresponding Lagrangian dual problem. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for an exact penalty representation in the framework of indicator augmented Lagrangian.  相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to study the duality and penalty method for a constrained nonconvex vector optimization problem. Following along with the image space analysis, a Lagrange-type duality for a constrained nonconvex vector optimization problem is proposed by virtue of the class of vector-valued regular weak separation functions in the image space. Simultaneously, some equivalent characterizations to the zero duality gap property are established including the Lagrange multiplier, the Lagrange saddle point and the regular separation. Moreover, an exact penalization is also obtained by means of a local image regularity condition and a class of particular regular weak separation functions in the image space.  相似文献

In the context of an inequality constrained optimization problem, we present a unified nonlinear Lagrangian dual scheme and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the zero duality gap property. From these results, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for four classes of zero duality gap properties and establish the equivalence among them. Finally, we obtain the convergence of an optimal path for the unified scheme and present a sufficient condition for the finite termination of the optimal path. This paper extends and completes the discussion by Xing et?al. (Canonical dual solutions to the quadratic programming over a quadratic constraint, submitted) about the quadratic programming over one quadratic constraint (QP1QC). In particular, we relax the assumption to cover more general cases when the two matrices from the objective and the constraint functions can be simultaneously diagonalizable via congruence. Under such an assumption, the nonconvex (QP1QC) problem can be solved through a dual approach with no duality gap. This is unusual for general nonconvex programming but we can explain by showing that (QP1QC) is indeed equivalent to a linearly constrained convex problem, which happens to be dual of the dual of itself. Another type of hidden convexity can be also found in the boundarification technique developed in Xing et?al. (Canonical dual solutions to the quadratic programming over a quadratic constraint, submitted).  相似文献

We first establish sufficient conditions ensuring strong duality for cone constrained nonconvex optimization problems under a generalized Slater-type condition. Such conditions allow us to cover situations where recent results cannot be applied. Afterwards, we provide a new complete characterization of strong duality for a problem with a single constraint: showing, in particular, that strong duality still holds without the standard Slater condition. This yields Lagrange multipliers characterizations of global optimality in case of (not necessarily convex) quadratic homogeneous functions after applying a generalized joint-range convexity result. Furthermore, a result which reduces a constrained minimization problem into one with a single constraint under generalized convexity assumptions, is also presented.  相似文献

In this paper, in order to obtain some existence results about solutions of the augmented Lagrangian problem for a constrained problem in which the objective function and constraint functions are noncoercive, we construct a new augmented Lagrangian function by using an auxiliary function. We establish a zero duality gap result and a sufficient condition of an exact penalization representation for the constrained problem without the coercive or level-bounded assumption on the objective function and constraint functions. By assuming that the sequence of multipliers is bounded, we obtain the existence of a global minimum and an asymptotically minimizing sequence for the constrained optimization problem.  相似文献

The question of nonemptiness of the intersection of a nested sequence of closed sets is fundamental in a number of important optimization topics, including the existence of optimal solutions, the validity of the minimax inequality in zero sum games, and the absence of a duality gap in constrained optimization. We consider asymptotic directions of a sequence of closed sets, and introduce associated notions of retractive, horizon, and critical directions, based on which we provide new conditions that guarantee the nonemptiness of the corresponding intersection. We show how these conditions can be used to obtain simple and unified proofs of some known results on existence of optimal solutions, and to derive some new results, including a new extension of the Frank–Wolfe Theorem for (nonconvex) quadratic programming.  相似文献

In this paper, by using an augmented Lagrangian approach, we obtain several sufficient conditions for the existence of augmented Lagrange multipliers of a cone constrained optimization problem in Banach spaces, where the corresponding augmenting function is assumed to have a valley at zero. Furthermore, we deal with the relationship of saddle points, augmented Lagrange multipliers, and zero duality gap property between the cone constrained optimization problem and its augmented Lagrangian dual problem.  相似文献

We present in this paper an improved estimation of duality gap between binary quadratic program and its Lagrangian dual. More specifically, we obtain this improved estimation using a weighted distance measure between the binary set and certain affine subspace. We show that the optimal weights can be computed by solving a semidefinite programming problem. We further establish a necessary and sufficient condition under which the weighted distance measure gives a strictly tighter estimation of the duality gap than the existing estimations.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to present a nonconvex duality with a zero gap and its connection with convex duality. Since a convex program can be regarded as a particular case of convex maximization over a convex set, a nonconvex duality can be regarded as a generalization of convex duality. The generalized duality can be obtained on the basis of convex duality and minimax theorems. The duality with a zero gap can be extended to a more general nonconvex problems such as a quasiconvex maximization over a general nonconvex set or a general minimization over the complement of a convex set. Several applications are given. On leave from the Institute of Mathematics, Hanoi, Vietnam.  相似文献

It is shown that, for very general classes of nonconvex global optimization problems, the duality gap obtained by solving a corresponding Lagrangian dual in reduced to zero in the limit when combined with suitably refined partitioning of the feasible set. A similar result holds for partly convex problems where exhaustive partitioning is applied only in the space of nonconvex variables. Applications include branch-and-bound approaches for linearly constrained problems where convex envelopes can be computed, certain generalized bilinear problems, linearly constrained optimization of the sum of ratios of affine functions, and concave minimization under reverse convex constraints.  相似文献

Convex relaxations can be used to obtain lower bounds on the optimal objective function value of nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programs. However, for some problems, significantly better bounds can be obtained by minimizing the restricted Lagrangian function for a given estimate of the Lagrange multipliers. The difficulty in utilizing Lagrangian duality within a global optimization context is that the restricted Lagrangian is often nonconvex. Minimizing a convex underestimate of the restricted Lagrangian overcomes this difficulty and facilitates the use of Lagrangian duality within a global optimization framework. A branch-and-bound algorithm is presented that relies on these Lagrangian underestimates to provide lower bounds and on the interval Newton method to facilitate convergence in the neighborhood of the global solution. Computational results show that the algorithm compares favorably to the Reformulation–Linearization Technique for problems with a favorable structure.  相似文献

Since the standard multi knapsack problem, may be rewritten as a reverse convex problem, we present a global optimization approach. It is known from solving high dimensional nonconvex problems that pure cutting plane methods may fail and branch-and-bound is impractical, due to a large duality gap. On the other hand, a strategy based on some sufficient optimality condition does not help much because it requires generating all level set points, an intractable problem. Therefore, we propose to combine both a cutting plane method and a sufficient optimality condition together with a random generation of level set points where the number of points is limited by a tabu list to prevent re-examination of the same level set area. Experiments show that we end up with a small duality gap allowing a subsequent branch-and-bound approach to prove optimality.  相似文献
