Compressible subsonic turbulent starting jet with a relatively large Reynolds number of significant practical importance is investigated using large eddy simulation (LES), starting from a smooth contraction nozzle. The computational domain of truncated conical shape is determined through the comparison of the time-averaged numerical solution with the particle imaging velocimetry measurements for the steady jet. It is shown that the starting jet consists of a leading vortex ring followed by a quasi-steady jet, and the instantaneous velocity field exhibits contraction and expansion zones, corresponding to the high pressure (HP) and low pressure (LP) regions formed by the convecting vortex rings, and are related to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The thin boundary layer inside the smooth contraction nozzle evolves into a shear layer at the nozzle exit and develops with the downstream penetration of the jet. Using λ 2 criterion, the formation and evolution of the vortical structures are temporally visualized, illustrating distortion of vortex rings into lobed shapes prior to break-down. Rib-shape streamwise vortex filaments exist in the braid region between a pair of consecutive vortex rings due to secondary instabilities. Finally, formation and dynamics of hairpin vortices in the shear layer is identified.  相似文献

A direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with a step change from a smooth to a rough surface is analyzed to examine the characteristics of a spatially developing flow. The roughness elements are periodically arranged two-dimensional (2-D) spanwise rods, with the first rod placed 80θin downstream from the inlet, where θin denotes the inlet momentum thickness. Based on an accurate estimation of relevant parameters, clear evidence for mean flow universality is provided when scaled properly, even for the present roughness configuration, which is believed to have one of the strongest impacts on the flow. Compared to previous studies, it is shown that overshooting behavior is present in the first- and second-order statistics and is locally created either within the cavity or at the leading edge of the roughness depending on the type of statistics and the wall-normal measurement location. Inspection of spatial two-point correlations of the streamwise velocity fluctuations shows a continuous increase of spanwise length scales of structures over the rough wall after the step change at a greater growth rate than that over smooth wall TBL flow. This is expected because spanwise energy spectrum shows presence of much energetic wider structures over the rough wall. Full images of the DNS data are presented to describe not only predominance of hairpin vortices but also a possible spanwise scale growth mechanism via merging over the rough wall.  相似文献

The time-averaged velocity and streamwise vorticity fields within the wake of a stack were investigated in a low-speed wind tunnel using a seven-hole pressure probe. The experiments were conducted at a Reynolds number, based on the stack external diameter, of ReD=2.3×104. The stack, of aspect ratio AR=9, was mounted normal to a ground plane and was partially immersed in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer, where the ratio of the boundary layer thickness to the stack height was δ/H≈0.5. The jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio was varied from R=0 to 3, which covered the downwash, crosswind-dominated and jet-dominated flow regimes. In the downwash and crosswind-dominated flow regimes, two pairs of counter-rotating streamwise vortex structures were identified within the stack wake. The tip vortex pair located close to the free end of the stack, and the base vortex pair located close to the ground plane within the flat-plate boundary layer, were similar to those found in the wake of a finite circular cylinder, and were associated with the upwash and downwash flow fields within the stack wake, respectively. In the jet-dominated flow regime, a third pair of streamwise vortex structures was observed, referred to as the jet-wake vortex pair, which occurred within the jet-wake region above the free end of the stack. The jet-wake vortex pair had the same orientation as the base vortex pair and was associated with the jet rise. The peak vorticity and strength of the streamwise vortex structures were functions of the jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio. For the tip vortex structures, their peak vorticity and strength reduced as the jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratio increased.  相似文献

The evolution of two spanwise-aligned low-speed streaks in a wall turbulent flow, triggered by the instability of the subharmonic varicose (SV) mode, is studied by a direct numerical simulation (DNS) method in a small spatial-periodic channel. The results show that the SV low-speed streaks are self-sustained at the early stage, and then transform into subharmonic sinuous (SS) low-speed streaks. Initially, the streamwise vortex sheets are formed by shearing, and then evolve into zigzag vortex sheets due to the mutual induction. As the intensification of the SV low-speed streaks becomes prominent, the tilted streamwise vortex tubes and the V-like streamwise vortex tubes can be formed simultaneously by increasing \( + \frac{{\partial u}}{{\partial x}}\). When the SV low-speed streaks break down, new zigzag streamwise vortices will be generated, thus giving birth to the next sustaining cycle of the SV low-speed streaks. When the second breakdown happens, new secondary V-like streamwise vortices instead of zigzag streamwise vortices will be generated. Because of the sweep motion of the fluid induced by the secondary V-like streamwise vortices, each decayed low-speed streak can be divided into two parts, and each part combines with the part of another streak, finally leading to the formation of SS low-speed streaks.  相似文献

The flow field, generated by an oscillating pressure gradient close to a rough wall, is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations of Navier–Stokes and continuity equations. The wall roughness consists of semi-spheres regularly placed on a plane wall. A comparison of the obtained results with the experimental measurements of Keiller and Sleath [D.C. Keiller, J.F.A. Sleath, Velocity measurements close to a rough plate oscillating in its own plane, J. Fluid Mech. 73 (1976) 673–691] supports the numerical findings. As in Keiller and Sleath [D.C. Keiller, J.F.A. Sleath, Velocity measurements close to a rough plate oscillating in its own plane, J. Fluid Mech. 73 (1976) 673–691], a secondary peak in the streamwise velocity component is observed close to flow reversal and the peak is shown to be generated by the coherent vortex structures which are shed by the roughness elements. The flow is found to be dominated by the shear layers which form at the top of the roughness elements during the accelerating phases of the cycle and by the horse-shoe vortices which form close to the base of the semi-spheres. The dynamics of the shear layers and of the horse-shoe vortices is found to have a relevant influence on the pressure distribution and on the force exerted by the fluid on the roughness elements. The obtained results shed light to the mechanism by which the sediment is picked-up from the bottom by the action of sea waves.  相似文献

A direct numerical simulation dataset of a fully developed turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow is analyzed to investigate the spatial organization of streamwise velocity-fluctuating u-structures on large and very large scales. Instantaneous and statistical flow fields show that negative-u structures with a small scale on a stationary bottom wall grow throughout the centerline due to the continuous positive mean shear, and they penetrate to the opposite moving wall. The development of an initial vortical structure related to negative-u structures on the bottom wall into a large-scale hairpin vortex packet with new hairpin vortices, which are created upstream and close to the wall, is consistent with the auto-generation process in a Poiseuille flow (Zhou et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 387, 1999, pp. 353–396). Although the initial vortical structure associated with positive-u structures on the top wall also grows toward the bottom wall, the spatial development of the structure is less coherent with weak strength due to the reduced mean shear near the top wall, resulting in less turbulent energy on the top wall. The continuous growth of the structures from a wall to the opposite wall explains the enhanced wall-normal transport of the streamwise turbulent kinetic energy near the centerline. Finally, an inspection of the time-evolving instantaneous fields and conditional averaged flow fields for the streamwise growth of a very long structure near the centerline exhibits that a streamwise concatenation of adjacent large-scale u-structures creates a very-large-scale structure near the channel centerline.  相似文献

The effects of shape and relative submergence (the ratio of flow depth to obstacle height, d/H) are investigated on the wakes around four different low-aspect-ratio wall-mounted obstacles at Re H  = 17,800: semi-ellipsoids with the major axes of the base ellipses aligned in the streamwise and transverse directions, and two cylinders with aspect ratios matching the ellipsoids (H/D = 0.89 and 0.67, where D is the maximum transverse dimension). Particle Image Velocimetry was used to interrogate the flow. Streamwise features observed in the mean wake include counter-rotating distributions of vorticity inducing downwash (tip structures), upwash (base structures), and horseshoe vortices. In particular, the relatively subtle change in geometry produced by the rotation of the ellipsoid from the streamwise to the transverse orientation results in a striking modification of the mean streamwise vorticity distribution in the wake. Tip structures are dominant in the former case, while base structures are dominant in the latter. A vortex skeleton model of the wake is proposed in which arch vortex structures, shed from the obstacle, are deformed by the competing mechanisms of Biot-Savart self-induction and the external shear flow. The selection of tip or base structures in the ellipsoid wakes is caused by tilting of the arch structures either upstream or downstream, respectively, which is governed by ellipsoid curvature. An inverse relationship was observed between the relative submergence and the strength of the base structures for the ellipsoids, with a dominant base structure observed for d/H = 1 in both cases. These results demonstrate a means by which to achieve significant modifications to flow structure and thereby also to transport mechanisms in the flow. Therefore, this work provides insight into the modeling and control of flow over wall-mounted bodies.  相似文献

Manipulation of large-scale vortical structures and associated mixing in a methane-air coaxial jet is carried out by using miniature jet actuators installed on the inner surface of the annular nozzle. The periodic radial miniature jet injections are achieved with a rapid-response servo-valve. The spatio-temporal primary jet structures are investigated through phase-locked 2C-PIV (2 Component Particle Image Velocimetry) and stereoscopic-PIV. It is found that intense ring-like vortices are produced perfectly in phase with the periodic miniature jet injections regardless of the valve-driven frequency fv examined. When the Strouhal number Stv, which is defined with fv, is larger than unity, the ring-like vortices are densely formed and thus methane/air mixing is prompted with low periodic fluctuation. The diameter of the vortices becomes small as Stv is increased, so that the transport range of the inner methane and outer air fluids can be controlled by changing Stv. In addition, the evolution of counter-rotating vortex pair is also observed in the cross-sectional plane. These streamwise vortices are directly formed as a result of the radial miniature jet injection, which leads to entrainment of the ambient fluid near the primary jet shear layer, and they also contribute to the mixing enhancement. Moreover, it is demonstrated that coaxial jet flame characteristics such as carbon monoxide (CO) emission and flame holding can be drastically improved under different equivalence ratios by the present jet control scheme.  相似文献

Tomographic particle image velocimetry was used to quantitatively visualize the three-dimensional coherent structures in the logarithmic region of the turbulent boundary layer in a water tunnel. The Reynolds number based on momentum thickness is Reθ = 2 460.The instantaneous velocity fields give evidence of hairpin vortices aligned in the streamwise direction forming very long zones of low speed fluid, which is flanked on either side by highspeed ones.Statistical support for the existence of hairpins is given by conditional averaged eddy within an increasing spanwise width as the distance from the wall increases, and the main vortex characteristic in different wall-normal regions can be reflected by comparing the proportion of ejection and its contribution to Reynolds stress with that of sweep event. The pre-multiplied power spectra and two-point correlations indicate the presence of large-scale motions in the boundary layer, which are consistent with what have been termed very large scale motions(VLSMs).The three dimen-sional spatial correlations of three components of velocity further indicate that the elongated low-speed and highspeed regions will be accompanied by a counter-rotating roll modes,as the statistical imprint of hairpin packet structures, all of which together make up the characteristic of coherent structures in the logarithmic region of the turbulent boundary layer(TBL).  相似文献

The evolution of a time-developing mixing layer with cross-shear is simulated numerically using a pseudo-spectral method. The results indicate that stretching by the rollers is responsible for the formation of the streamwise vortices in a mixing layer with cross-shear. When the cross-shear is relatively strong (such as θ=20°), the co-rotating streamwise vortices related to the early spanwise Kelvin–Helmholtz instability are intensified rapidly by stretching and collapse into rib-shaped vortices, which are very similar to the ribs in a plane mixing layer. Atθ =20°, the vortex corresponding to the “quadrupole” in a plane mixing layer is also observed in the core region, and a set of streamwise vortices with signs opposite to those of the vortices containing the ribs lie at the spanwise braid region. The counterparts of the ribs, however, are of flat shape and much weaker. When θ is up to 30°, the ribs are so strong that their counterparts cannot develop. When θ is down to 10°, the symmetry of the streamwise vortices is more obvious, but the ribs do not form. Additionally, it is revealed that the introduction of the strong cross-shear results in enhanced mixing compared to a two-dimensional mixing layer.  相似文献

Wall-resolved large eddy simulations are employed to investigate the behaviour of wake vortices and single vortices in ground proximity at a variety of wind conditions. The six considered strengths of wind, ranging between 0.5 and 4 times the initial wake vortex descent speed, w0, include practically and theoretically significant wind speeds. A crosswind of 0.5 w0 may lead to windward stall posing a potential hazard to subsequently landing aircraft, whereas theoretical considerations predict that at 4 w0 the rebound of the luff vortex is completely suppressed. The same range of wind speeds is also used to investigate the effects of headwind and diagonal wind in order to discriminate between effects of environmental turbulence increasing with wind speed and the direction of the wind shear. The study has been complemented by a number of single vortex computations in order to differentiate between effects related to the mutual interaction of the vortex pair and the individual vortices with the turbulent boundary layer flow. It is shown that vortex ascent, descent, rebound and decay characteristics are controlled by (i) the interaction of the vortices with secondary vorticity detaching from the ground, (ii) the redistribution of vorticity of the boundary layer which is altering the path of the primary vortices by mutual velocity induction, and (iii) the interaction of the vortices with the environmental turbulence.  相似文献

The interaction between the wake of a transverse circular cylinder and the underlying flat-plate boundary layer with a moderate gap ratio G/D=1.0 is investigated using both hydrogen-bubble-based and PIV-based visualization techniques. The spanwise rollers in the cylinder wake are found to be capable of inducing secondary vortices in the near-wall region. The mutual induction from the counter-clockwise rollers, which are closer to the wall, plays a primary role, so that these secondary vortices present linear lift-up motion at first. Their subsequent evolution dominantly determines the characteristics of the wake/boundary-layer interaction. Two different vortex interaction scenarios are observed: the secondary vortices can be either entrained into the rollers or pushed down towards the wall. This leads to a rapid three-dimensional destabilization process, through which streamwise vortices are generated. And it is suggested that these streamwise vortices are the dominant structures to promote the following boundary layer transition.  相似文献

The near wake of square cylinders with different corner radii was experimentally studied based on particle imaging velocimetry (PIV), laser doppler anemometry (LDA) and hotwire measurements. Four bluff bodies, i.e., r/d=0 (square cylinder), 0.157, 0.236, 0.5 (circular cylinder), where r is corner radius and d is the characteristic dimension of the bluff bodies, were examined. A conditional sampling technique was developed to obtain the phase-averaged PIV data in order to characterize quantitatively the effect of corner radii on the near-wake flow structure. The results show that, as r/d increases from 0 to 0.5, the maximum strength of shed vortices attenuates, the circulation associated with the vortices decreases progressively by 50%, the Strouhal number, St, increases by about 60%, the convection velocity of the vortices increases along with the widening of the wake width by about 25%, the vortex formation length and the wake closure length almost double in size. Meanwhile, both the vortex wavelength, λ x , and the lateral spacing, λ y , decrease as r/d increases, but the ratio of λ y to λ x is approximately 0.29, irrespective of r/d, which is close to the theoretical value of 0.281 for a stable Karman vortex street. The decrease in wavelength is probably responsible for the change in the flow structure from the approximately circular-shaped vortex at r/d=0 to the laterally stretched vortex at r/d=0.5. The leading edge corner radius is more important than the trailing one in influencing the near wake structure since it determines to a great extent the behavior of the streamlines, the separation angle and the base pressure. It is further found that the ratio of the mean drag coefficient to the total shed circulation, C d0, approaches a constant, about 0.25 for different bluff bodies in the subcritical flow regime. The streamwise evolution of vortices and the streamwise fluctuating velocity along the centerline for rounded cylinders are also discussed.  相似文献

This paper investigates flow past a rotating circular cylinder at 3600?Re?5000 and α?2.5. The flow parameter α is the circumferential speed at the cylinder surface normalized by the free-stream velocity of the uniform cross-flow. With particle image velocimetry (PIV), vortex shedding from the cylinder is clearly observed at α<1.9. The vortex pattern is very similar to the vortex street behind a stationary circular cylinder; but with increasing cylinder rotation speed, the wake is observed to become increasing narrower and deflected sideways. Properties of large-scale vortices developed from the shear layers and shed into the wake are investigated with the vorticity field derived from the PIV data. The vortex formation length is found to decrease with increasing α. This leads to a slow increase in vortex shedding frequency with α. At α=0.65, vortex shedding is found to synchronize with cylinder rotation, with one vortex being shed every rotation cycle of the cylinder. Vortex dynamics are studied at this value of α with the phase-locked eduction technique. It is found that although the shear layers at two different sides of the cylinder possess unequal vorticity levels, alternating vortices subsequently shed from the cylinder to join the two trains of vortices in the vortex street pattern exhibit very little difference in vortex strength.  相似文献

In order to find the intrinsic physical mechanism of the original Kármán vortex wavily distorted across the span due to the introduction of three-dimensional (3-D) geometric disturbances, a flow past a peak-perforated conic shroud is numerically simulated at a Reynolds number of 100. Based on previous work by Meiburg and Lasheras (1988), the streamwise and vertical interactions with spanwise vortices are introduced and analyzed. Then vortex-shedding patterns in the near wake for different flow regimes are reinspected and illustrated from the view of these two interactions. Generally, in regime I, spanwise vortices are a little distorted due to the weak interaction. Then in regime II, spanwise vortices, even though curved obviously, are still shed synchronously with moderate streamwise and vertical interactions. But in regime III, violently wavy spanwise vortices in some vortex-shedding patterns, typically an \(\Omega \)-type vortex, are mainly attributed to the strong vertical interactions, while other cases, such as multiple vortex-shedding patterns in sub-regime III-D, are resulted from complex streamwise and vertical interactions. A special phenomenon, spacial distribution of streamwise and vertical components of vorticity with specific signs in the near wake, is analyzed based on two models of streamwise and vertical vortices in explaining physical reasons of top and bottom shear layers wavily varied across the span. Then these two models and above two interactions are unified. Finally two sign laws are summarized: the first sign law for streamwise and vertical components of vorticity is positive in the upper shear layer, but negative in the lower shear layer, while the second sign law for three vorticity components is always negative in the wake.  相似文献

Dynamics of hairpin vortices generated by a mixing tab in a channel flow   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
To better understand mixing by hairpin vortices, time-series particle image velocimetry (PIV) was applied to the wake of a trapezoidal-shaped passive mixing tab mounted at the bottom of a square turbulent channel (Re h =2,080 based on the tab height). Instantaneous velocity/vorticity fields were obtained in sequences of 10 Hz in the tab wake in the center plane (xy) and in a plane (xz) parallel to the wall. Periodically-shed hairpin vortices were clearly identified and seen to rise as they advected downstream. Experimental evidence shows that the vortex-induced ejection of the near-wall viscous fluid to the immediate upstream is important to the dynamics of hairpin vortices. It can increase the strength of the hairpin vortices in the near tab region and cause generation of secondary hairpin vortices further downstream when the hairpin heads are farther away from the wall. Measurements also reveal the existence of a type of new secondary vortice with the opposite-sign spanwise vorticity. The distribution of vortex loci in the xy plane shows that the hairpin vortices and the reverse vortices are spatially segregated in distinct layers. Turbulence statistics, including mean velocity profiles, Reynolds stresses, and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate distributions, were obtained from the PIV data. These statistical quantities clearly reveal imprints of the identified vortex structures and provide insight into mixing effectiveness.

The stability of the laminar boundary layer developing on a flat plate in the presence of a periodic row of roughness elements is investigated. A Direct Numerical Simulation is performed to compute the steady flow downstream of the roughness elements, which contains a pair of two counter-rotating streamwise vortices per element, which can be considered as a “pre-streaky” structure. The linear stability of this base flow is analyzed by means of the so-called “biglobal” stability approach. Three-dimensional eigenmodes are found, which are shown to be the continuation of the Tollmien–Schlichting waves present in the case of an unperturbed boundary layer. Moreover, a stabilizing effect due to the roughness-induced vortices is found. A Direct Numerical Simulation of the interaction between a two-dimensional Tollmien–Schlichting wave and the roughness array is also performed. The computed perturbation traveling downstream of the roughness elements is shown to be a linear combination of the biglobal eigenmodes.  相似文献
