The spanwise correlation of a circular cylinder and a trapezoidal bluff body placed inside a circular pipe in fully developed turbulent regime is studied using hotwire anemometer. The present configuration possesses complex fluid structure interaction owing to the following features: high blockage effect; low aspect ratio of the body; upstream turbulence and interaction of axisymmetric flow with a two dimensional bluff body. The spatial correlation of such configuration is seldom reported in the literature. Results are presented for Reynolds number of ReD=1×105. Three different blockage ratios (0.14, 0.19 and 0.28) are considered in the present study. Correlation coefficient is observed to improve with increase in blockage ratio. Compared to a circular cylinder, a trapezoidal bluff body possesses high correlation length. The near wall effects tend to increase the phase drift, which is reflected in low correlation coefficients close to the pipe wall. The results show that the simultaneous effect of curvature, low aspect ratio and upstream turbulence reduces the correlation coefficients significantly as compared to unconfined and confined (parallel channel) flows. The low frequency modulations with a circular cylinder are higher for lower blockage ratios. The three-dimensionality of vortex shedding for trapezoid with a blockage ratio of 0.28 was observed to be lower compared to circular cylinder and all other blockage ratios. Low frequency modulations were found to be responsible for weak vortex shedding from a circular cylinder compared to a trapezoidal bluff body. The vortex shedding is observed to be nearly two dimensional in case of a trapezoidal bluff body of blockage ratio 0.28.  相似文献

Temperature changes have a significant influence on the measurements of Reynolds stresses in turbulent boundary layers. As compared to the spanwise velocity fluctuations the streamwise turbulence intensity is especially sensitive to temperature deviations. Although this is a general statement its importance is clearly elucidated in a shear-free turbulence near a solid wall, since the mixing due to turbulence production is minimized in this flow. A consequence of temperature influence on hot-wire measurements is that frictional heating from the wall has produced contradictory results in different experiments on shear-free turbulence. In the current paper, measurements of streamwise and spanwise turbulence intensities have been conducted at different wall temperatures, thereby simulating the contradictory results mentioned above. A simple model has been developed showing that the turbulence intensities are affected by both the rms. value of the temperature fluctuations and the correlation between fluctuating temperature and velocity. These correlations are measured and the developed model is used to explain deviations in earlier measurements on shear-free turbulence. Moreover, the individual magnitudes of the two correlations in the temperature correction are estimated and their individual importance is discussed. The development of three-dimensional structures and the succeeding transition to turbulence occurs in the wake of a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers 190≤Re≤330. This regime is investigated numerically by means of a spectral element method. Earlier numerical works aimed mainly at reproducing characteristic wake patterns observed in experiments. Small sizes of computational domains and short integration times were chosen to save computational resources. Consequently, the quantitative results show a considerable scatter. Within this work, a step by step approach to highly accurate direct numerical simulations is described. Thorough studies of the effect of resolution and blockage are performed in the laminar, two-dimensional regime, resulting in Reynolds number relationships that exactly reproduce experimental data. Based on these results, a stability analysis is performed to obtain wavelengths that are unstable against spanwise perturbations and the critical Reynolds number for the onset of three-dimensionality. The most unstable wavelengths of the “mode A” and “mode B” instabilities and its multiples are used as periodicity length for direct numerical simulations. Effects of integration time, resolution in streamwise as well as spanwise directions, and periodicity length on the flow quantities are studied. Numerically obtained Reynolds number relationships of Strouhal number and base-pressure coefficients that fit accurately within measured results are given for the first time. Curves for drag and lift coefficients are provided and compared with previous numerical studies. Furthermore, physical interpretations of the wake transition are discussed. Since the separation of physical features and effects of experimental arrangements are frequently an open question, our numerical results are able to supply a contribution to the understanding of the physics of cylinder flow. The effect of a longitudinally oscillating cylinder on the two-dimensionality of flow around a downstream cylinder is studied based on a two-point correlation measured using two hot-wires. The oscillation amplitude is A/d=0.472 and the oscillation frequency fe/fs=0.0372 and 0.186, where d is the cylinder diameter and fs the frequency of natural vortex shedding from an isolated stationary cylinder. Three centre-to-centre spacing (L) ratios of the two cylinders were examined, i.e., L/d=1.8, 2.5 and 4.8, representing three typical flow regimes. The experiment was conducted at a Reynolds number (Re) of 5920, based on d and the free-stream velocity. It is found that the spanwise correlation of the flow depends on not only the oscillation but also the flow regimes. At L/d=1.8, the correlation is strongest among the three regimes, but worst in the co-shedding regime (L/d=4.8). The upstream cylinder oscillation improves the spanwise correlation of the flow in the gap of the cylinders, irrespective of regimes, especially for L/d=1.8 and 2.5, but impairs that behind the cylinders for L/d=1.8 and 2.5 due to a change in the flow regime. A theoretical analysis based on the boundary vorticity theory indicates that the oscillation increases the vorticity flux, in particular, in the spanwise direction between the cylinders, resulting in a significantly improved spanwise correlation, though this increase is negligibly small behind the downstream cylinder.  相似文献

The flow field of a channel rotating about the streamwise axis is analyzed experimentally and numerically. The current investigations were carried out at a bulk velocity based Reynolds number of Rem = 2850 and a friction velocity based Reynolds number of Reτ = 180, respectively. Particle-image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are compared with large-eddy simulation data to show earlier direct numerical simulation findings to generate too large a reverse flow region in the center region of the spanwise flow. The development of the mean spanwise velocity distribution and the influence of the rotation on the turbulent properties, i.e., the Reynolds stresses and the two-point correlations of the flow, are confirmed in both investigations. The rotation primarily influences those components of the Reynolds shear stresses, which contain the spanwise velocity component. The size of the correlation areas and thus the length scales of the flow generally grow in all three coordinate directions leading to longer structures. Furthermore, experimental results of the same channel flow at a significantly lower bulk Reynolds number of Rem, l = 665, i.e., a laminar flow in a non-rotating channel, are introduced. The experiments show the low Reynolds number flow to become turbulent under rotation and to develop the same characteristics as the high Reynolds number flow.  相似文献

Nonlinear interactions of the two-dimensional(2D) second mode with oblique modes are studied numerically in a Mach 6.0 flat-plate boundary layer, focusing on its selective enhancement effect on amplification of different oblique waves. Evolution of oblique modes with various frequencies and spanwise wavenumbers in the presence of 2D second mode is simulated successively, using a modified parabolized stability equation(PSE) method, which is able to simulate interaction of two modes with different frequencies efficiently. Numerical results show that oblique modes in a broad band of frequencies and spanwise wavenumbers can be enhanced by the finite amplitude 2D second mode instability wave. The enhancement effect is accomplished by interaction of the 2D second mode, the oblique mode, and a forced mode with difference frequency. Two types of oblique modes are found to be more amplified, i.e., oblique modes with frequency close to that of the 2D second mode and low-frequency first mode oblique waves. Each of them may correspond to one type of transition routes found in transition experiments. The spanwise wavenumber of the oblique wave preferred by the nonlinear interaction is also determined by numerical simulations.  相似文献

Effect of spanwise jet-to-jet spacing on local heat transfer distribution due to an in-line rectangular array of confined multiple circular air jets impinging on a surface parallel to the jet plate are studied experimentally. Length-to-diameter ratio of nozzles of the jet plate is 1.0. The flow, after impingement, is constrained to exit in two opposite directions from the confined passage formed between jet plate and target plate. Mean jet Reynolds numbers based on the nozzle exit diameter (d) covered are 3000, 5000, 7500 and 10,000 and jet-to-plate spacings studied are d, 2d and 3d. Spanwise pitches considered are 2d, 4d and 6d in steps of 2d keeping the streamwise pitch at 5d. For all the configurations, the jet-plates have ten spanwise rows in streamwise direction and six jets in each spanwise row. Flat heat transfer surface is made of thin stainless steel metal foil. Local temperature distribution on a target plate is measured using thermal infrared camera. Wall static pressure on the target plate is measured in the streamwise direction to estimate crossflow velocities and individual jet velocities. Heat transfer characteristics are explained on the basis of the flow distribution. A simple correlation to predict streamwise distribution of heat transfer coefficients averaged over each spanwise strip resolved to one jet hole is developed.  相似文献

DNS data for channel flow, subjected to spanwise (in-plane) wall oscillations at a friction Reynolds number of 1025, are used to examine the turbulence interactions that cause the observed substantial reduction in drag provoked by the forcing. Following a review of pertinent interactions between the forcing-induced unsteady Stokes strain and the Reynolds stresses, identified in previous work by the present authors, attention is focused on the equations governing the components of the enstrophy, with particular emphasis placed on the wall-normal and the spanwise components. The specific objective is to study the mechanisms by which the Stokes strain modifies the enstrophy field, and thus the turbulent stresses. As such, the present analysis sheds fresh light on the drag-reduction processes, illuminating the interactions from a different perspective than that analysed in previous work. The investigation focuses on the periodic rise and fall in the drag and phase-averaged properties during the actuation cycle at sub-optimal actuation conditions, in which case the drag oscillates by around ±2% around the time-averaged 20% drag-reduction margin. The results bring out the important role played by specific strain-related production terms in the enstrophy-component equations, and also identifies vortex tilting/stretching in regions of high skewness as being responsible for the observed strong increase in the spanwise enstrophy components during the drag-reduction phase. Simultaneously, the wall-normal enstrophy component, closely associated with near-wall streak intensity, diminishes, mainly as a result of a reduction in a production term that involves the correlation between wall-normal vorticity fluctuations and the spanwise derivative of wall-normal-velocity fluctuations, which pre-multiplies the streamwise shear strain.

Spanwise variations in nominally two-dimensional rough-wall boundary layers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Laboratory experiments have been conducted in two separate boundary layer facilities to investigate steady spanwise variations in mean velocity discovered during studies of developing flows over regular arrays of large roughness elements. Regular spanwise variation was found with a steady wavelength, moderated by the growing boundary layer, which was an integer multiple of the repeating unit of roughness. Amplitude variations greater than ±5% in the mean were found over the roughness and greater than ±10% in turbulence quantities. Due to the dominating nature of this phenomena throughout the layer, care should be taken in undertaking local measurements aimed at identifying flow variations caused by roughness heterogeneity.  相似文献

In the previous papers the authors have reported that the two-dimensional Kármán vortices behind a circular cylinder are deformed until they form chains of spoon-shaped vortex couples whose spanwise scale is about 8d, which is a new type of coherent structure. In this report experimental evidence of this structure is presented. Formation process of the structure and the turbulence in it were investigated for the wake behind a circular cylinder with Re = 2100 and 4200 by means of the flow visualization technique, simultaneous hot wire measurements, spanwise correlation measurements, construction of instantaneous velocity field by the conditional sampling method, etc.  相似文献

It is known from smoke visualizations that in a transitional boundary layer subjected to free-stream turbulence, streaks appear and eventually break down to turbulence after wavy motions. In order to observe the streaky structures directly, a stereo particle-tracking velocimetry system using hydrogen bubbles in a water channel has been developed and validated against laser Doppler velocimetry. Mean flow statistics show good agreement with previous results. With the developed measurement system, the instantaneous spanwise distribution of the streamwise and wall-normal velocities can be measured fast enough to resolve the time development of the streaky structures. Measurements of instantaneous spanwise distributions of the streamwise and wall-normal velocity disturbances show strong negative correlation between the wall-normal and streamwise velocities in the streaks. The prediction of bypass transition remains an important problem in many engineering applications. This is largely because there is no suitable theoretical model for bypass transition and predictions are made using empirical models. This paper presents numerical results for the receptivity of a zero pressure gradient boundary layer subjected to simple freestream waveforms which are the constituent parts of a turbulent flow field. Significant receptivities are only obtained for a minority of freestream waveforms and these lead to two types of flow structure in the boundary layer. The first type of flow structure is essentially two dimensional in nature and consists of two rows of counter-rotating spanwise vortices and is induced by freestream waves of large normal and spanwise wavelength and streamwise wavelengths approximately equal to the boundary layer thickness. The second type of flow structure are the streamwise streaks frequently observed in flow visualisation experiments. These streaks are induced by freestream waves of long streamwise and normal wavelength and spanwise wavelengths in the range of 14.5-46 θ (1.7-5.4δ). The freestream waves can be formed of velocity components in any direction, however the boundary layer is most receptive to fluctuations that lie in a plane perpendicular to the streamwise direction. The overall receptivity to a full spectrum of waves typical of freestream turbulence is considered and is shown to have similar characteristics to those from experiments.  相似文献

Suction on a turbulent boundary layer is applied through a narrow strip in order to understand the effects suction can have on the boundary layer development and turbulent structures in the flow. Detailed two-component laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) based measurements have been undertaken in regions close to the suction strip and further downstream. The region close to the strip involves a flow reversal accompanied by a change in sign for the Reynolds shear stress and strong gradients in the flow variables. The mean streamwise velocity after suction remains larger than its corresponding no-suction value. Relative to the no-suction case, the velocity fluctuations first decrease with suction followed by a slow recovery which may involve a slight overshoot. LIF visualizations indicate that compared to the no-suction case, the low-speeds streaks stay closer to the wall and exhibit a smaller amount of spanwise and wall-normal oscillations with suction. The visualization results are consistent with two-point velocity correlation measurements. The streamwise and spanwise correlation measurements indicate that the structures are disrupted or removed from the boundary layer due to suction suggesting that the original boundary layer has been strongly influenced by suction. The results are explained by the development of a new inner layer that forms downstream of the suction strip.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations obtained in large computational domains of a fully developed turbulent channel flow up to the Karman number 1100 are analyzed to determine the scaling of the spanwise correlation coefficients and the effect of the outer eddies. The local fluctuating velocity field is narrow-band-pass and low-pass filtered along the streamwise wavenumber. The spanwise correlations of the narrow-band passed signals in the low buffer layer adequately provide length scales and signatures of the active structures. The low-pass filtering is used to investigate the relative role of the outer eddies. The impact of the active and passive eddies on the wall is analyzed separately through the cross-correlations of the filtered velocity field with the wall shear stress fluctuations. Characteristic length-scales resulting from the analysis of the velocity field differ depending on the quantity and some are related to the conventional streak spacing but not all. The quasi-streamwise vortex paradigm, for the most part, allows the interpretation of these characteristics, but fails in some cases.  相似文献

In contrast with a wide range of applications concerning flows around a circular cylinder at upper subcritical Reynolds numbers (Re), there is no systematic understanding about the fundamentals of so-called random flow patterns, and their effects on intermittent modulations in the time history of pressure or force, and the decrease in their spanwise correlations. This paper employed the large-eddy simulation (LES) technique to predict flows past a circular cylinder at Re=1.3×105 and to provide images based on flow visualization that can clarify the physical mechanism responsible for these outcomes. A reasonably sufficient spanwise length was adopted for the numerical model by taking into consideration the effect of aspect ratios (the spanwise length to the diameter). We found that even at such high Res, a three-dimensional pattern of vortical field is present in the wake resulting in total force modulation and weak spanwise correlation, e.g., obvious oblique shedding. The whole development process of the three-dimensional wake is exhibited as a universal. The results revealed that local phase variations in primary vortex shedding are the starting points of three-dimensional wake patterns, which are induced by the “irregular” streamwise vortex. The three-dimensional near wake following local phase variations is associated with a successive evolution composed of certain stages in order. Quantitative analyses based on the time series of sectional lift coefficients show that intermittent increase in primary shedding periods and sectional lift streak divisions are closely related to local phase variations and vortex division in the development process of the three-dimensional pattern. In addition to the phase difference along the span, the three-dimensional pattern also weakens vortex shedding in cross sections perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, resulting in modulation of the sectional lift coefficient.  相似文献

This paper describes a nonintrusive method for the visualization of the flow about a delta wing with spanwise blowing jets, based on the schlieren technique. The effects of the jet/leading-edge vortex interference are visualized by using both air and helium for the jets. The visualization of the leading-edge vortex trajectories and their breakdown, as well as the influence of the jets on them is achieved by spanwise blowing of air. The visualization of the jets' paths and the effects of the leading-edge vortices on these paths is achieved by spanwise blowing of helium.  相似文献

A linear model of a two-fluid channel flow under streamwise/spanwise electric field is built. Both the fluids are assumed to be incompressible, viscous and perfectly dielectric. The effect of the streamwise and spanwise electric fields on transient behavior of small three-dimensional disturbances is studied. The numerical result shows that the streamwise electric field suppresses transient growth of the disturbance with spanwise uniform wave number. The spanwise electric field diminishes transient growth of the disturbance with streamwise uniform wave number. Two peaks of optimal growth are detected in the wave number plane. The peak at relatively large spanwise wave number is dominated by the lift-up mechanism and little influenced by electric field. Differently, the peak at relatively small wave number is associated with the characteristic of the interface and possibly influenced by electric field. The effect of the Weber number, the Reynolds number and the relative electrical permittivity on optimal growth is studied as well. A scaling law is obtained for relatively small Weber numbers and relatively large Reynolds numbers.  相似文献
