Despite the large number of successful applications of laser ablation, elemental and isotopic fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) remain as the main limitations for many applications of this technique in the fields of analytical chemistry and Earth Sciences. A substantial effort has been made to control such fractionations, which are well-established features of nanosecond laser ablation systems. Technological advancements made over the past decade now allow the ablation of solids by femtosecond laser pulses in the deep ultraviolet (UV) region at wavelengths less than 200 nm. Here the use of femtosecond laser ablation and its effects on elemental and isotopic fractionation is investigated. The Pb/U system is used to illustrate elemental fractionation and stable Fe isotopes are used to illustrate isotopic fractionation. No elemental fractionation is observed beyond the precision of the multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) measurements. Without a matrix match between standard and sample, elemental fractionation is absent even when using different laser ablation protocols for standardization and samples (spot versus raster). Furthermore, we found that laser ablation-induced isotope ratio drifts, commonly observed during nanosecond laser ablation, are undetectable during ultraviolet femtosecond laser ablation. So far the precision obtained for Fe isotope ratio determinations is 0.1‰ (2 standard deviation) for the 56Fe/54Fe ratio. This is close to that obtainable by solution multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The accuracy of the results appears to be independent of the matrix used for standardization. The resulting smaller particle sizes reduce fractionation processes. Femtosecond laser ablation carries the potential to solve some of the difficulties encountered during the two prior decades since the introduction of laser ablation.  相似文献

Pulsed laser ablation (266 nm) was used to generate metal particles of Zn and Al alloys using femtosecond (150 fs) and nanosecond (4 ns) laser pulses with identical fluences of 50 J cm−2. Characterization of particles and correlation with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) performance was investigated. Particles produced by nanosecond laser ablation were mainly primary particles with irregular shape and hard agglomerates (without internal voids). Particles produced by femtosecond laser ablation consisted of spherical primary particles and soft agglomerates formed from numerous small particles. Examination of the craters by white light interferometric microscopy showed that there is a rim of material surrounding the craters formed after nanosecond laser ablation. The determination of the crater volume by white light interferometric microscopy, considering the rim of material surrounding ablation craters, revealed that the volume ratio (fs/ns) of the craters on the selected samples was approximately 9 (Zn), 7 (NIST627 alloy) and 5 (NIST1711 alloy) times more ablated mass with femtosecond pulsed ablation compared to nanosecond pulsed ablation. In addition, an increase of Al concentration from 0 to 5% in Zn base alloys caused a large increase in the diameter of the particles, up to 65% while using nanosecond laser pulses. When the ablated particles were carried in argon into an ICP-MS, the Zn and Al signals intensities were greater by factors of ∼50 and ∼12 for fs versus ns ablation. Femtosecond pulsed ablation also reduced temporal fluctuations in the 66Zn transient signal by a factor of 10 compared to nanosecond laser pulses.  相似文献

The formation of molecular and cluster ions of different inorganic materials in plasma mass spectrometry – spark source mass spectrometry (SSMS), radiofrequency glow discharge mass spectrometry (rf GDMS), laser ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) – was investigated and compared. Similar abundance distributions of cluster ions were observed for a graphite sample, for boron nitride/ graphite and for metal oxide/graphite mixtures using different plasma mass spectrometric methods. A correlation of intensities of metal argide ions in ICP-MS with their bond dissociation energies was used to estimate unknown dissociation energies of molecular ionic species. For the elements of the 2nd or 3rd period in the periodic table, the intensities of most argon molecular ions (ArX+) measured by ICP-MS rise with increasing atomic number in a similar manner to the theoretically calculated bond dissociation energies of argon molecular ions.  相似文献

The mass removal mechanisms occurring during the ablation of an aluminum target, induced by an Nd:YAG laser at λ = 1064 nm in air at different laser fluences, were investigated at different pressures and in the orthogonal double pulse configuration. Both the spectroscopic analysis of the plasma emission and the microscopic analysis of the craters, providing complementary information on the laser ablation process, were performed. The first technique allowed the calculation of the plasma thermodynamic parameters and an estimation of its atomized mass, while the latter led to the calculation of their volume, as well as a qualitative inspection of the craters profile and appearance. The results obtained at different fluences suggest a complex picture where the air pressure strongly drives the laser shielding effect, which in turn affects the relevance of melt displacement, melt expulsion and phase explosion mechanisms. The measurements performed in double pulse configuration suggest that in this case the ablation process is very similar to that induced at low air pressure. Phase explosion seems to occur in double pulse laser ablation while it seems inhibited in single pulse ablation at atmospheric pressure. Differently, melt splashing is much more efficient in single pulse ablation at atmospheric pressure than in double pulse ablation.  相似文献

Near-field laser ablation (NF-LA) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) is very promising for highly spatially resolved chemical analyses on various substrates at atmospheric pressure, for example, in materials and life science applications. Although nanoscale sample craters can be produced routinely, no molecular mass spectra of ablated material from craters of ≤1 μm diameter have ever been acquired by NF-LA MS at atmospheric pressure. Some of the pressing questions are thus how much of the ablated material is transported into the mass spectrometer and in what form. Therefore, material redeposition on the near-field tip’s surface from laser ablation of molecular solids was characterized with scanning electron microscopy. The crater profiles were studied by scanning probe microscopy. The results shown in this study demonstrate that there could be as much as 70% of the ablated material deposited on the near-field tip’s surface. The redeposited products were found to be confined to a height of ~50 μm, thus suggesting that most components inside near-field ablation plumes propagate about the same distance for both anthracene and tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum. Nanoparticles ablated from craters of ≤1 μm diameter are clearly observed. Furthermore, observation of tips after ablation of an anthracene surface angled at 60° with respect to a horizontal surface shows that the direction of the near-field ablation plume is neither in the direction of the surface normal nor towards the axis of incident laser beam but deflected further away from surface normal.   相似文献

The potential of radiofrequency glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (rf-GD-OES) for the quantification and the solid-state speciation of metal oxide films has been investigated in this work. Two types of oxide coatings, an iron oxide film deposited on silicon and a chromate conversion coating (CCC), were studied at 700 Pa of pressure and 30 W of forward power. The metal to oxygen ratios in the quantitative depth profiles (Fe/O and Cr/O, respectively) were used to evaluate the oxidation states of iron and chromium in the oxide films, demonstrating the capability of GD-OES technique for depth-resolved solid-state speciation. Furthermore, the effect of glow discharge sputtering on the samples surface in terms of modifications in the surface morphology and species transformations, were investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The iron and chromium oxidation states were carefully studied by XPS at the original samples surface and at the bottom of GD craters, and a systematic reduction of metal elements was observed after rf-GD-OES analysis. In the case of thin oxide films, preferential sputtering can be considered as a critical factor since oxygen atoms can be preferentially sputtered, leaving a metal-enriched surface and, therefore, promoting the reduction of metal elements. In the present study preferential sputtering was found to be sample dependent, changing the proportion of the metal reduction in the oxide film with its composition. Additionally, alternative sputter-depth-profiling techniques such as secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), femtosecond laser ablation (fs-LA), and XPS ion gun were used for the analysis of the CCC in order to evaluate the reduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+ depending on the sputtering mechanism.  相似文献

The capability of LA-ICP-MS for determination of trace impurities in transparent quartz glasses was investigated. Due to low or completely lacking absorption of laser radiation, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) proves difficult on transparent solids, and in particular the quantification of measurement results is problematic in these circumstances. Quartz glass reference materials of various compositions were studied by using a Nd:YAG laser system with focused laser radiation of wavelengths of 1064 nm, 532 nm and 266 nm, and an ICP-QMS (Elan 6000, Perkin Elmer). The influence of ICP and laser ablation conditions in the analysis of quartz glasses of different compositions was investigated, with the laser power density in the region of interaction between laser radiation and solid surface determining the ablation process. The trace element concentration was determined via calibration curves recorded with the aid of quartz glass reference materials. Under optimized measuring conditions the correlation coefficients of the calibration curves are in the range of 0.9–1. The relative sensitivity factors of the trace elements determined in the quartz glass matrix are 0.1–10 for most of the trace elements studied by LA-ICP-MS. The detection limits of the trace elements in quartz glass are in the low ng/g to pg/g range.  相似文献

Most of the first-row transition-metal oxides, M(A)O(B) (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) were examined by static secondary ion mass spectrometry (s-SIMS) and laser ablation/ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (LA-FTICRMS). Positive and negative ions show strong correlation between the studied oxide and the detected cluster ions. Specific M(x)O(y) (+/-) species were systematically observed with both MS techniques for each investigated M(A)O(B) transition-metal oxide. Moreover, the ion composition and ion distribution are greatly dependent on the ionization technique. Laser ablation (LA)/ionization leads to larger cluster ions (ionic species with nearly hundred atoms were in particular detected for Sc2O3 and Y2O3 oxides), whereas hydrogenated, dihydrogenated, and sometimes trihydrogenated species were observed in s-SIMS. However, the ion distribution for a given M(x)O(y) (+/-) ion series (i.e. ions including the same number of metal atoms M) generally presented important similarities in both techniques. Finally, it was demonstrated that the chemical state of metal atoms in the observed ionic species is closely dependent on the metal electronic valence shell. High valence states (+III, +IV, +V, and +VI) are favored for metals with a less-than-half full valence shell configuration, whereas for other first-row transition metals (manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc) lower metal valence states (0, +I or, +II) are involved.  相似文献

The ions generated by laser ablation (LA) of calcium and gadolinium oxoborate GdCa4O(BO3)3 (GdCOB) were investigated by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICRMS), a powerful tool for the characterization of ionic species produced by laser interaction with solid material. In order to better understand the matter transfer and the mechanism of thin film growth by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD), cationic and anionic clusters generated by UV laser ablation of GdCOB bulk material were studied. Laser ablation of GdCOB leads to the formation of various cluster ions which result from association of CaO, BO and B2O3 building blocks (BB) with different charge carriers (CC): H+, BO+, GdO+ in positive ion mode, and BO2-, OK-, OH-, Cl-, WO3- in negative ion mode. LA-FTICRMS investigations allow us to assign a valence state to each metallic atom included in each BB. A +II chemical state may be associated with calcium and +II and +III ones to boron. UV laser ablation of GdCOB therefore induces reduction processes of boron species in the gas phase. The oxygen reactive atmosphere used during PLD experiments allows the growth of stoichiometric thin films by fixation of oxygen on the ablated species.  相似文献

We report on a method for the identification of selenium-containing proteins in an extract of sunflower leafs. It is based on the separation of the proteins by 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis, followed by detection of selenium via laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The laser system was operated in a raster mode at 100?μm?s-1 and proved to be an efficient alternative in the search for selenoproteins in the spots of the gels. The instrumental parameters were optimized in terms of plasma energy and application of optimal reaction cell conditions, and the detection of the mass 80Se16O+ which enabled the elimination of interfering species. Selenium was identified in 9.6% of the analyzed spots, indicating its random incorporation into the primary structure of the proteins.

Irradiation effects at low and high laser fluence on 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid large crystals were investigated. Contrary to what was observed for matrices as cinnamic acid derivatives, no chemical degradation of matrix is evidenced and continuous ablation as well as ion production resulted of extended irradiation in all the fluence range corresponding to classical matrix-assisted laser desorption /ionization. Ripples are formed on the base of the crater for a limited number of laser shots under moderate fluence. For extended irradiation, conical shape craters are formed with the axis of the crater oriented along the incident direction of the laser beam. A study of the craters showed that ablation through the ablated volume slowly varied with the laser fluence when a strong increase of ion production (matrix and analyte) was recorded. Ablation volume was found to vary non-linearly with the number of laser shots. On a same spot, the ablated volume and the ion production were measured as a function of the laser energy. With an increasing laser energy (or fluence), the ablated volume slowly increases when the ion production strongly increases. This gives evidence of a decoupling between ablation and ionization. Interaction of the plume with the incoming beam is thus probable.  相似文献

The analytical figures of merit for ultraviolet laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (UV-LA-ICP-MS) at 266 nm with respect to the trace element analysis of high-purity, UV-transmitting alkaline earth halides are investigated and discussed. Ablation threshold energy density values and ablation rates for mono- and poly-crystalline CaF2 samples were determined. Furthermore, Pb-, Rb-, Sr-, Ba- and Yb-specific analysis was performed. For these purposes, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser operated at the fourth harmonic of the fundamental wavelength (λ=266 nm) and a double-focusing sector field ICP-MS detector were employed. Depending on the background noise and isotope-specific sensitivity, the detection limits typically varied from 0.7 ng/g for Sr to 7 ng/g in the case of Pb. The concentrations were determined using a glass standard reference material (SRM NIST612). In order to demonstrate the sensitivity of the arrangement described, comparative measurements by means of a commercial ablation system consisting of an ArF excimer laser (λ=193 nm) and a quadrupole-type ICP-MS (ICP-QMS) instrument were carried out. The accuracy of both analyses was in good agreement, whereas ablation at 266 nm and detection using sector-field ICP-MS led to a sensitivity that was one order of magnitude above that obtained at 193 nm with ICP-QMS.  相似文献

Particles produced by previous laser shots may have significant influence on the analytical signal in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma (LA-ICP) spectrometry if they remain close to the position of laser sampling. The effects of these particles on the laser-induced breakdown event are demonstrated in several ways. LIBS-experiments were conducted in an ablation cell at atmospheric conditions in argon or air applying a dual-pulse arrangement with orthogonal pre-pulse, i.e., plasma breakdown in a gas generated by a focussed laser beam parallel and close to the sample surface followed by a delayed crossing laser pulse in orthogonal direction which actually ablates material from the sample and produces the LIBS plasma. The optical emission of the LIBS plasma as well as the absorption of the pre-pulse laser was measured. In the presence of particles in the focus of the pre-pulse laser, the plasma breakdown is affected and more energy of the pre-pulse laser is absorbed than without particles. As a result, the analyte line emission from the LIBS plasma of the second laser is enhanced. It is assumed that the enhancement is not only due to an increase of mass ablated by the second laser but also to better atomization and excitation conditions favored by a reduced gas density in the pre-pulse plasma. Higher laser pulse frequencies increase the probability of particle-laser interaction and, therefore, reduce the shot-to-shot line intensity variation as compared to lower particle loadings in the cell. Additional experiments using an aerosol chamber were performed to further quantify the laser absorption by the plasma in dependence on time both with and without the presence of particles. The overall implication of laser-particle interactions for LIBS and LA-ICP-MS/OES are discussed.  相似文献

For the trace analysis of impurities in thick ceramic layers of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) sensitive solid-state mass spectrometric methods, such as laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and radiofrequency glow discharge mass spectrometry (rf-GDMS) have been developed and used. In order to quantify the analytical results of LA-ICP-MS, the relative sensitivity coefficients of elements in a La(0.6)Sr(0.35)MnO(3) matrix have been determined using synthetic standards. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) - as a surface analytical method - has been used to characterize the element distribution and diffusion profiles of matrix elements on the interface of a perovskite/Y-stabilized ZrO(2) layer. The application of different mass spectrometric methods for process control in the preparation of ceramic layers for the SOFC is described.  相似文献

A simple device was designed to measure the acoustic signal accompanying laser ablation. The potential use of this signal for laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma atomic emission was examined. A frequency quadrupled pulsed Nd:YAG laser radiation was used for the ablation of glass, steel and ceramic samples. The relation between the acoustic signal, the laser energy, the analyte signal and the amount of ablated material was studied and evidence of the use of the acoustic signal for the exact focusing of the laser beam onto the sample surface was given. A more intense acoustic signal was observed for the exact focusing with a formation of larger ablation craters in glass and ceramics.
