The size effects on the optical properties of vanadium dioxide nanoparticles in ordered arrays have been studied. Contrary to previous VO2 studies, we observe that the optical contrast between the semiconducting and metallic phases is dramatically enhanced in the visible region, presenting size-dependent optical resonances and size-dependent transition temperatures. The collective optical response as a function of temperature presents an enhanced scattering state during the evolving phase transition. The effects appear to arise because of the underlying VO2 mesoscale optical properties, the heterogeneous nucleation behind the phase transition, and the incoherent coupling between the nanoparticles undergoing an order-disorder-order transition. Calculations that support these interpretations are presented.  相似文献

We review our recent theoretical advances in phase transition of cold atoms in optical lattices, such as triangular lattice, honeycomb lattice, and Kagomé lattice. By employing the new developed numerical methods called dynamical cluster approximation and cellular dynamical mean-field theory, the properties in different phases of cold atoms in optical lattices are studied, such as density of states, Fermi surface and double occupancy. On triangular lattice, a reentrant behavior of phase translation line between Fermi liquid state and pseudogap state is found due to the Kondo effect. We find the system undergoes a second order Mott transition from a metallic state into a Mott insulator state on honeycomb lattice and triangular Kagomé lattice. The stability of quantum spin Hall phase towards interaction on honeycomb lattice with spin-orbital coupling is systematically discussed. And we investigate the transition from quantum spin Hall insulator to normal insulator in Kagomé lattice which includes a nearest-neighbor intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and a trimerized Hamiltonian. In addition, we propose the experimental protocols to observe these phase transition of cold atoms in optical lattices.  相似文献

In this Letter we have used the optical pump induced thermal loading to drive Nd(3+) a doped Sr(0,47)Ba(0.53)(Nb)(3))(2) laser crystal during laser operation through its ferroelectric phase transition. We demonstrate that lasing is possible below, at, and above phase transition. For temperatures close to (approximately 105 degrees C) the spatial distribution of laser radiation is remarkably affected. This feature, which leads to a laser gain depression, can be explained in terms of the strong temperature dependence of the thermo-optic coefficient during phase transition. Additionally, the visible radiation generated by intracavity self-frequency doubling disappears when the phase transition is undergone, showing a bistable behavior. The results provide fundamental information on physical parameters along the phase transition and will stimulate further work in the fields of nonlinear optics, optical switching, and data storage.  相似文献

We investigate the phenomena of symmetry breaking and phase transition in the ground state of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in a double square well and in an optical lattice well, respectively. By using standing-wave expansion method, we present symmetric and asymmetric ground state solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with a symmetric double square well potential for attractive nonlinearity. In particular, we study the ground state wave function's properties by changing the depth of potential and atomic interactions (here we restrict ourselves to the attractive regime). By using the Fourier grid Hamiltonian method, we also reveal a phase transition of BECs trapped in one-dimensional optical lattice potential.  相似文献

Topological physics in optical lattices have attracted much attention in recent years. The nonlinear effects on such optical systems remain well-explored and a large amount of progress has been achieved. In this paper, under the mean-field approximation for a nonlinearly optical coupled boson–hexagonal lattice system, we calculate the nonlinear Dirac cone and discuss its dependence on the parameters of the system. Due to the special structure of the cone, the Berry phase (two-dimensional Zak phase) acquired around these Dirac cones is quantized, and the critical value can be modulated by interactions between different lattices sites. We numerically calculate the overall Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase and find that it is also quantized, which provides a possible topological number by which we can characterize the quantum phases. Furthermore, we find that topological phase transition occurs when the band gap closes at the nonlinear Dirac points. This is different from linear systems, in which the transition happens when the band gap closes and reopens at the Dirac points.  相似文献

In order to study the shifting of phase transition temperature of ferroelectric liquid crystals due to addition of dye molecules, we have investigated two ferroelectric liquid crystal materials (Felix 16/030 and Felix 16/100) and their five mixtures with Anthraquinone dye (1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% wt/wt). The phase transition scheme has been investigated and analyzed by results obtained from the optical transmittance and the dielectric permittivity study with variation of temperature in the range of 30 to 100 °C. Both the samples clearly show the shifting of phase transition temperature with dye concentration, especially the SmC*-SmA phase transition temperature. It is also clear from the study that SmC*-SmA phase transition phenomenon also becomes stronger with the addition of dye molecules. A theoretical explanation has also been given for shifting of phase transition temperature. The amount of shift in transition temperature agrees well as obtained from optical and dielectric studies.  相似文献

Using a novel approach to calculate optical properties of strongly correlated systems, we address the old question of the physical origin of the alpha--> gamma transition in Ce. We find that the Kondo collapse model, involving both the f and the spd electrons, describes the optical data better than a Mott transition picture involving the f electrons only. Our results compare well with existing experiments on thin films. We predict the full temperature dependence of the optical spectra and find the development of a hybridization pseudogap in the vicinity of the alpha--> gamma phase transition.  相似文献

We show how bifurcation theory and experimental measurements can be used hand-in-hand to analyse transitions to complicated dynamics in a semiconductor laser subject to optical injection. By a direct comparison of theoretical and experimental optical spectra we identify and explain the underlying dynamics in phase space. This is demonstrated with four distinct bifurcation transitions, including a transition near a saddle-node Hopf point and an intermittent transition to chaos.  相似文献

We analyze the stability of superfluid currents in a system of strongly interacting ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. We show that such a system undergoes a dynamic, irreversible phase transition at a critical phase gradient that depends on the interaction strength between atoms. At commensurate filling, the phase boundary continuously interpolates between the classical modulation instability of a weakly interacting condensate and the equilibrium quantum phase transition into a Mott insulator state at which the critical current vanishes. We argue that quantum fluctuations smear the transition boundary in low dimensional systems. Finally we discuss the implications to realistic experiments.  相似文献

The behavior of acoustic phonons in tetragonal lysozyme crystals is studied using Brillouin scattering over a temperature range from 298 to 330 K. Around 307 K, anomalies in the temperature dependence of the velocity and integral intensity of a quasi-transverse phonon and in the velocity of a quasi-longitudinal phonon are detected. The experimental results are discussed in terms of the current concepts of the dynamics of proteins. The observed anomalies in the behavior of hypersonic acoustic phonons are indicative of a structural phase transition occurring in a lysozyme crystal at 307 K.  相似文献

In this Letter we study the superfluid–Mott-insulator (SMI) phase transition of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in an optical lattice. The analytic exciation energy spectrum is obtained by means of Bogoliubov transformation and hence the SMI phase transition condition is determined explicitly. 采用双离子束溅射氧化钒薄膜附加热处理的方式制备了纳米二氧化钒薄膜。在热驱动方式下,分别利用四探针测试技术和傅里叶变换红外光谱技术对纳米二氧化钒薄膜的电学与光学半导体-金属相变特性进行了测试与分析。实验结果表明,电学相变特性与光学相变特性之间存在明显的偏差,电学相变温度为63 ℃,高于光学相变温度,60 ℃;电学相变持续的温度宽度较光学相变持续温度宽度宽;在红外光波段,随着波长的增加,纳米二氧化钒薄膜的光学相变温度逐渐增大,由半导体相向金属相转变的初始温度逐渐升高,相变持续的温度宽度变窄。在红外光波段,纳米二氧化钒薄膜的光学相变特性可以通过光波波长进行调控,电学相变特性更适合表征纳米VO2薄膜的半导体-金属相变特性。  相似文献

Several chalcogenide alloys exhibit a pronounced contrast between the optical absorption in the metastable rocksalt and in the amorphous phase. This phenomenon is the basis for their application in optical data storage. Here we present ab initio calculations of the optical properties of GeTe and Ge1Sb2Te4 in the two phases. The analysis of our computations and experimental data reveal the correlation between local structural changes and optical properties as well as the origin of the optical contrast in these materials. We find that the change in optical properties cannot be attributed to a smearing of transition energies as commonly assumed for amorphous semiconductors: the optical contrast between the two phases can only be explained by significant changes in the transition matrix elements.  相似文献

We investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation of photons and photon pairs in a two-dimension optical microcavity. We find that in the paraxial approximation, the mixed gas of photons and photon pairs is formally equivalent to a two dimension system of massive bosons with non-vanishing chemical potential, which implies the existence of two possible condensate phase. We also discuss the quantum phase transition of the system and obtain the critical point analytically. Moreover, we find that the quantum phase transition of the system can be interpreted as second harmonic generation.  相似文献

We analytically study the quantum phase diagrams of ultracold dipolar Bose gases in an optical square lattice at zero temperature by using the generalized effective-potential Landau theory (GEPLT). For a weak nearest-neighbor repulsion, our analytical results are better than the third-order strong-coupling expansion theory calculation. In contrast to a previous quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation, we analytically calculate phase transition boundaries up to the third-order hopping, which are in excellent agreement with QMC simulations for second-order phase transition.  相似文献

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate and observe relativistic Dirac fermions with cold atoms in a hexagonal optical lattice. By controlling the lattice anisotropy, one can realize both massive and massless Dirac fermions and observe the phase transition between them. Through explicit calculations, we show that both the Bragg spectroscopy and the atomic density profile in a trap can be used to demonstrate the Dirac fermions and the associated phase transition.  相似文献

研究了单模光腔中两组分玻色-爱因斯坦凝聚的基态性质和相关的量子相变.通过利用自旋相干态变换将等效赝自旋哈密顿算符对角化并求得基态能量泛函.基态能量泛函对其经典场变量进行变分并取极小值,得到光子数解和相边界曲线.通过稳定性讨论发现系统除了出现正常相和超辐射相之外,还得到了多稳的宏观量子态;受激辐射来自于原子数反转的集体态,单组分的Dicke系统中并没有此现象;受激辐射只能从一组分的原子中产生,而另外的仍保持在普通超辐射状态.通过调整相关的原子-场耦合强度和频率失谐,超辐射和受激辐射态的顺序可以在原子的两个组分之间互换.  相似文献

We present a two-level atomic Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with dispersion, which is coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. We call this model the extended Jaynes–Cummings–Dicke (JC-Dicke) model and introduce an effective Hamiltonian for this system. From the direct product of Heisenberg–Weyl (HW) coherent states for the field and U(2) coherent states for the matter, we obtain the potential energy surface of the system. Within the framework of the mean-field approach, we evaluate the variational energy as the expectation value of the Hamiltonian for the considered state. We investigate numerically the quantum phase transition and the Berry phase for this system. We find the influence of the atom–atom interactions on the quantum phase transition point and obtain a new phase transition occurring when the microwave amplitude changes. Furthermore, we observe that the coherent atoms not only shift the phase transition point but also affect the macroscopic excitations in the superradiant phase.  相似文献

The Bose Hubbard model describing interacting bosons in an optical lattice is reduced to a simple spin-1 XY model with single-ion anisotropy in the vicinity of the Mott phase. In the strong coupling Mott insulating regime, we propose a mean t~eld theory based on a constraint SU(3) pseudo-boson representation on the effective model and discuss the excitation spectra and the phase transition to the superfluid state. Further to the superfluid phase, we use the coherent-state approach to derive the collective excitation modes. It is found that the Mort phase has two degenerate gapped quadratic excitation spectra which graduate into two degenerate gapless linear ones at the transition point, and one gapless linear mode with one gapped quadratic mode in the superfluid phase.  相似文献
