Necessary and sufficient condition for uniqueness of solution to the first boundary value problem for the diffusion equation in unbounded domains

This paper introduces a notion of regularity of t=-∞$t=-\infty$ for the diffusion (or heat) equation and establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique bounded solution to the first boundary value problem for the diffusion equation in a general domain Ω⊂R^N+1$\Omega \subset {\mathbb{R}}^{N+1}$ which extends up to t=-∞$t=-\infty$.     

On symmetric and locally finite actions of groups on the quintic tree

In this paper, we determine all faithful, symmetric and locally finite actions of a group on the tree of valency five. As a corollary we complete the classification of the isomorphism types of vertex and edge stabilisers in a group acting symmetrically on a graph of valency five. This builds on work of Weiss and recent work of Feng, Zhou and Feng, Guo. Our approach is to classify the isomorphism types of finite, faithful amalgams of degree (5, 2).     

The approximation characteristic of diagonal matrix in probabilistic setting

In this paper, the approximation characteristic of a diagonal matrix in probabilistic and average case settings is investigated. And the asymptotic degree of the probabilistic linear (n,δ)$(n,\delta )$-width and p$p$-average linear n$n$-width of diagonal matrix M$M$ are determined.     

Generalized vector variational inequalities with star-pseudomonotone and discontinuous operators

It is well known that a vector variational inequality can be a very efficient model for use in studying vector optimization problems. By using the Ky Fan fixed point theorem and the scalarization method we will prove some existence theorems for strong solutions for generalized vector variational inequalities where discontinuous and star-pseudomonotone operators are involved. Our results can be applied to the study of the existence of solutions of vector optimal problems. Some examples are given and analyzed.     

Nonlinear maps preserving Jordan *-products

Let η$\eta$ be a non-zero scalar. In this paper, we investigate a bijective map ?$?$ between two von Neumann algebras, one of which has no central abelian projections, satisfying ?(AB+ηBA^∗)=?(A)?(B)+η?(B)?(A)^∗$?(AB+\eta B{A}^{\ast })=?\left(A\right)?\left(B\right)+\eta ?\left(B\right)?{\left(A\right)}^{\ast }$ for all A,B$A,B$ in the domain. It is showed that ?$?$ is a linear *-isomorphism if η$\eta$ is not real and ?$?$ is a sum of a linear *-isomorphism and a conjugate linear *-isomorphism if η$\eta$ is real.     

An approximation of the Mumford–Shah energy by a family of discrete edge-preserving functionals

We show the Γ$\Gamma$-convergence of a family of discrete functionals to the Mumford and Shah image segmentation functional. The functionals of the family are constructed by modifying the elliptic approximating functionals proposed by Ambrosio and Tortorelli. The quadratic term of the energy related to the edges of the segmentation is replaced by a nonconvex functional.     

Vector analysis for Dirichlet forms and quasilinear PDE and SPDE on metric measure spaces

Starting with a regular symmetric Dirichlet form on a locally compact separable metric space X$X$, our paper studies elements of vector analysis, _Lp$L_p$-spaces of vector fields and related Sobolev spaces. These tools are then employed to obtain existence and uniqueness results for some quasilinear elliptic PDE and SPDE in variational form on X$X$ by standard methods. For many of our results locality is not assumed, but most interesting applications involve local regular Dirichlet forms on fractal spaces such as nested fractals and Sierpinski carpets.     

An energy-based computational method in the analysis of the transmission of energy in a chain of coupled oscillators

In this paper we study the phenomenon of nonlinear supratransmission in a semi-infinite discrete chain of coupled oscillators described by modified sine-Gordon equations with constant external and internal damping, and subject to harmonic external driving at the end. We develop a consistent and conditionally stable finite-difference scheme in order to analyze the effect of damping in the amount of energy injected in the chain of oscillators; numerical bifurcation analyses to determine the dependence of the amplitude at which supratransmission first occurs with respect to the frequency of the driving oscillator are carried out in order to show the consequences of damping on harmonic phonon quenching and the delay of appearance of critical amplitude.     

A new parametric method for ranking fuzzy numbers

Ranking fuzzy numbers is important in decision-making, data analysis, artificial intelligence, economic systems and operations research. In this paper, to overcome the limitations of the existing studies and simplify the computational procedures an approach to ranking fuzzy numbers based on α$\alpha$-cuts is proposed. The approach is illustrated by numerical examples, showing that it overcomes several shortcomings such as the indiscriminative and counterintuitive behavior of existing fuzzy ranking approaches.     

Estimation in the presence of many nuisance parameters: Composite likelihood and plug-in likelihood

We consider the incidental parameters problem in this paper, i.e. the estimation for a small number of parameters of interest in the presence of a large number of nuisance parameters. By assuming that the observations are taken from a multiple strictly stationary process, the two estimation methods, namely the maximum composite quasi-likelihood estimation (MCQLE) and the maximum plug-in quasi-likelihood estimation (MPQLE) are considered. For the MCQLE, we profile out nuisance parameters based on lower-dimensional marginal likelihoods, while the MPQLE is based on some initial estimators for nuisance parameters. The asymptotic normality for both the MCQLE and the MPQLE is established under the assumption that the number of nuisance parameters and the number of observations go to infinity together, and both the estimators for the parameters of interest enjoy the standard root-n$n$ convergence rate. Simulation with a spatial–temporal model illustrates the finite sample properties of the two estimation methods.     

Gradient estimates in Orlicz spaces for quasilinear elliptic equation

In this paper we generalize classical L^q$L^q$, q≥p$q\ge p$, estimates of the gradient to the Orlicz space for weak solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations of p-Laplacian type.
