A theoretical error estimate for quadrature formulas, which depends on four approximations of the integral, is derived. We obtain a bound, often sharper than the trivial one, which requires milder conditions to be satisfied than a similar result previously presented by Laurie. A selection of numerical tests with one-dimensional integrals is reported, to show how the error estimate works in practice.  相似文献

The composite midpoint rule is probably the simplest one among the Newton-Cotes rules for Riemann integral. However, this rule is divergent in general for Hadamard finite-part integral. In this paper, we turn this rule to a useful one and, apply it to evaluate Hadamard finite-part integral as well as to solve the relevant integral equation. The key point is based on the investigation of its pointwise superconvergence phenomenon, i.e., when the singular point coincides with some a priori known point, the convergence rate of the midpoint rule is higher than what is globally possible. We show that the superconvergence rate of the composite midpoint rule occurs at the midpoint of each subinterval and obtain the corresponding superconvergence error estimate. By applying the midpoint rule to approximate the finite-part integral and by choosing the superconvergence points as the collocation points, we obtain a collocation scheme for solving the finite-part integral equation. More interesting is that the inverse of the coefficient matrix of the resulting linear system has an explicit expression, by which an optimal error estimate is established. Some numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical analysis.  相似文献

For analytic functions the remainder term of Gaussian quadrature formula and its Kronrod extension can be represented as a contour integral with a complex kernel. We study these kernels on elliptic contours with foci at the points ±1 and the sum of semi-axes ?>1 for the Chebyshev weight functions of the first, second and third kind, and derive representation of their difference. Using this representation and following Kronrod’s method of obtaining a practical error estimate in numerical integration, we derive new error estimates for Gaussian quadratures.  相似文献

We consider the general (composite) Newton-Cotes method for the computation of Cauchy principal value integrals and focus on its pointwise superconvergence phenomenon, which means that the rate of convergence of the Newton-Cotes quadrature rule is higher than what is globally possible when the singular point coincides with some a priori known point. The necessary and sufficient conditions satisfied by the superconvergence point are given. Moreover, the superconvergence estimate is obtained and the properties of the superconvergence points are investigated. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical results.  相似文献

This work deals with an approximation method for multivariate functions from data constituted by a given data point set and a partial differential equation (PDE). The solution of our problem is called a PDE spline. We establish a variational characterization of the PDE spline and a convergence result of it to the function which the data are obtained. We estimate the order of the approximation error and finally, we present an example to illustrate the fitting method.  相似文献

The complexities of weighted approximation and weighted integration problems for univariate functions defined over ℝ have recently been found in [7]. Complexity (almost) optimal algorithms have also been provided therein. In this paper, we propose another class of (almost) optimal algorithms that, for a number of instances, are easier to implement. More importantly, these new algorithms have a cost smaller than the original algorithms from [7]. Since both classes of algorithms are (almost) optimal, their costs differ by a multiplicative constant that depends on the specific weight functions and the error demand. In one of our tests we observed this constant to be as large as four, which means a cost reduction by a factor of four. Summary Retarded initial value problems are routinely replaced by an initial value problem of ordinary differential equations along with an appropriate interpolation scheme. Hence one can control the global error of the modified problem but not directly the actual global error of the original problem. In this paper we give an estimate for the actual global error in terms of controllable quantities. Further we show that the notion of local error as inherited from the theory of ordinary differential equations must be generalized for retarded problems. Along with the new definition we are led to developing a reliable basis for a step selection scheme.  相似文献

This paper introduces a general method for the numerical derivation of a minimum distance (MD) estimator for the parameters of an unknown distribution. The approach is based on an active sampling of the space in which the random sample takes values and on the optimization of the parameters of a suitable approximating model. This allows us to derive the MD estimator function for any given distribution, by which we can immediately obtain the MD estimate of the unknown parameters in correspondence to any observed random sample. Convergence of the method is proved when mild conditions on the sampling process and on the involved functions are satisfied, and it is shown that favorable rates can be obtained when suitable deterministic sequences are employed. Finally, simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm on two case studies.  相似文献

Summary. In this paper we derive an interior estimate for the Galerkin method with wavelet-type basis. Such an estimate follows from interior Galerkin equations which are common to a class of methods used in the solution of elliptic boundary value problems. We show that the error in an interior domain can be estimated with the best order of accuracy possible, provided the solution is sufficiently regular in a slightly larger domain, and that an estimate of the same order exists for the error in a weaker norm (measuring the effects from outside the domain ). Examples of the application of such an estimate are given for different problems. Received May 17, 1995 / Revised version received April 26, 1996  相似文献

Summary. An abstract error estimate for the approximation of semicoercive variational inequalities is obtained provided a certain condition holds for the exact solution. This condition turns out to be necessary as is demonstrated analytically and numerically. The results are applied to the finite element approximation of Poisson's equation with Signorini boundary conditions and to the obstacle problem for the beam with no fixed boundary conditions. For second order variational inequalities the condition is always satisfied, whereas for the beam problem the condition holds if the center of forces belongs to the interior of the convex hull of the contact set. Applying the error estimate yields optimal order of convergence in terms of the mesh size . The numerical convergence rates observed are in good agreement with the predicted ones. Summary. In this paper we consider two aspects of the problem of designing efficient numerical methods for the approximation of semilinear boundary value problems. First we consider the use of two and multilevel algorithms for approximating the discrete solution. Secondly we consider adaptive mesh refinement based on feedback information from coarse level approximations. The algorithms are based on an a posteriori error estimate, where the error is estimated in terms of computable quantities only. The a posteriori error estimate is used for choosing appropriate spaces in the multilevel algorithms, mesh refinements, as a stopping criterion and finally it gives an estimate of the total error. A new cubature rule for a parallelepiped domain is defined by integrating a discrete blending sum of C1 quadratic spline quasi-interpolants in one and two variables. We give the weights and the nodes of this cubature rule and we study the associated error estimates for smooth functions. We compare our method with cubature rules based on the tensor products of spline quadratures and classical composite Simpson’s rules.  相似文献

The numerical solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations is frequently performed by means of adaptive algorithms with user-input tolerance τ. The time-step is then chosen according to an estimate, based on small time-step heuristics, designed to try and ensure that an approximation to the local error commited is bounded by τ. A question of natural interest is to determine how the global error behaves with respect to the tolerance τ. This has obvious practical interest and also leads to an interesting problem in mathematical analysis. The primary difficulties arising in the analysis are that: (i) the time-step selection mechanisms used in practice are discontinuous as functions of the specified data; (ii) the small time-step heuristics underlying the control of the local error can break down in some cases. In this paper an analysis is presented which incorporates these two difficulties. For a mathematical model of an error per unit step or error per step adaptive Runge–Kutta algorithm, it may be shown that in a certain probabilistic sense, with respect to a measure on the space of initial data, the small time-step heuristics are valid with probability one, leading to a probabilistic convergence result for the global error as τ→0. The probabilistic approach is only valid in dimension m>1 this observation is consistent with recent analysis concerning the existence of spurious steady solutions of software codes which highlights the difference between the cases m=1 and m>1. The breakdown of the small time-step heuristics can be circumvented by making minor modifications to the algorithm, leading to a deterministic convergence proof for the global error of such algorithms as τ→0. An underlying theory is developed and the deterministic and probabilistic convergence results proved as particular applications of this theory. We study convergence properties of a numerical method for convection-diffusion problems with characteristic layers on a layer-adapted mesh. The method couples standard Galerkin with an h-version of the nonsymmetric discontinuous Galerkin finite element method with bilinear elements. In an associated norm, we derive the error estimate as well as the supercloseness result that are uniform in the perturbation parameter. Applying a post-processing operator for the discontinuous Galerkin method, we construct a new numerical solution with enhanced convergence properties.  相似文献

Summary. We consider a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method applied in time to a model Volterra equation of the second kind. A residual-based computable Galerkin-error estimate is derived for . This estimate does not explicitly contain the time step and therefore the time step control must be based on a heuristic criterion, the estimate can then be used to demonstrate the integrity, or otherwise, of the finite element solution. After performing some numerical experiments we conclude that this approach is at least competetive with classical discretizations since it is computationally simple to implement, but has the added advantage of reliable error feedback. We discuss an a posteriori error estimate for collocation methods applied to boundary value problems in ordinary differential equations with a singularity of the first kind. As an extension of previous results we show the asymptotical correctness of our error estimate for the most general class of singular problems where the coefficient matrix is allowed to have eigenvalues with positive real parts. This requires a new representation of the global error for the numerical solution obtained by piecewise polynomial collocation when applied to our problem class.  相似文献

New anisotropic a priori error estimates   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary. We prove a priori anisotropic estimates for the and interpolation error on linear finite elements. The full information about the mapping from a reference element is employed to separate the contribution to the elemental error coming from different directions. This new error estimate does not require the “maximal angle condition”. The analysis has been carried out for the 2D case, but may be extended to three dimensions. Numerical experiments have been carried out to test our theoretical results. Received March 3, 2000 / Revised version received June 27, 2000 / Published online April 5, 2001  相似文献

Summary. Interpolation with translates of a basis function is a common process in approximation theory. The most elementary form of the interpolant consists of a linear combination of all translates by interpolation points of a single basis function. Frequently, low degree polynomials are added to the interpolant. One of the significant features of this type of interpolant is that it is often the solution of a variational problem. In this paper we concentrate on developing a wide variety of spaces for which a variational theory is available. For each of these spaces, we show that there is a natural choice of basis function. We also show how the theory leads to efficient ways of calculating the interpolant and to new error estimates. Received December 10, 1996 / Revised version received August 29, 1997  相似文献

Non-oscillatory schemes are widely used in numerical approximations of nonlinear conservation laws. The Nessyahu–Tadmor (NT) scheme is an example of a second order scheme that is both robust and simple. In this paper, we prove a new stability property of the NT scheme based on the standard minmod reconstruction in the case of a scalar strictly convex conservation law. This property is similar to the One-sided Lipschitz condition for first order schemes. Using this new stability, we derive the convergence of the NT scheme to the exact entropy solution without imposing any nonhomogeneous limitations on the method. We also derive an error estimate for monotone initial data.  相似文献

The nonnegative inverse eigenvalue problem is that given a family of complex numbers λ={λ1,…,λn}, find a nonnegative matrix of order n with spectrum λ. This problem is difficult and remains unsolved partially. In this paper, we focus on its generalization that the reconstructed nonnegative matrices should have some prescribed entries. It is easy to see that this new problem will come back to the common nonnegative inverse eigenvalue problem if there is no constraint of the locations of entries. A numerical isospectral flow method which is developed by hybridizing the optimization theory and steepest descent method is used to study the reconstruction. Moreover, an error estimate of the numerical iteration for ordinary differential equations on the matrix manifold is presented. After that, a numerical method for the nonnegative symmetric inverse eigenvalue problem with prescribed entries and its error estimate are considered. Finally, the approaches are verified by the numerical test results.  相似文献
