Let be a regular ring, essentially of finite type over a perfect field . An -module is called a unit -module if it comes equipped with an isomorphism , where denotes the Frobenius map on , and is the associated pullback functor. It is well known that then carries a natural -module structure. In this paper we investigate the relation between the unit -structure and the induced -structure on . In particular, it is shown that if is algebraically closed and is a simple finitely generated unit -module, then it is also simple as a -module. An example showing the necessity of being algebraically closed is also given.

We study the arithmetic properties of higher Weierstrass points on modular curves for primes . In particular, for , we obtain a relationship between the reductions modulo of the collection of -Weierstrass points on and the supersingular locus in characteristic .

Using the Beilinson-Lusztig-MacPherson construction of the quantized enveloping algebra of and its associated monomial basis, we investigate -Schur algebras as ``little quantum groups". We give a presentation for and obtain a new basis for the integral -Schur algebra , which consists of certain monomials in the original generators. Finally, when , we interpret the Hecke algebra part of the monomial basis for in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements.

The combinatorial -Catalan numbers are weighted sums of Dyck paths introduced by J. Haglund and studied extensively by Haglund, Haiman, Garsia, Loehr, and others. The -Catalan numbers, besides having many subtle combinatorial properties, are intimately connected to symmetric functions, algebraic geometry, and Macdonald polynomials. In particular, the 'th -Catalan number is the Hilbert series for the module of diagonal harmonic alternants in variables; it is also the coefficient of in the Schur expansion of . Using -analogues of labelled Dyck paths, Haglund et al. have proposed combinatorial conjectures for the monomial expansion of and the Hilbert series of the diagonal harmonics modules.

This article extends the combinatorial constructions of Haglund et al. to the case of lattice paths contained in squares. We define and study several -analogues of these lattice paths, proving combinatorial facts that closely parallel corresponding results for the -Catalan polynomials. We also conjecture an interpretation of our combinatorial polynomials in terms of the nabla operator. In particular, we conjecture combinatorial formulas for the monomial expansion of , the ``Hilbert series' , and the sign character .

The continued fraction in the title is perhaps the deepest of Ramanujan's -continued fractions. We give a new proof of this continued fraction, more elementary and shorter than the only known proof by Andrews, Berndt, Jacobsen, and Lamphere. On page 45 in his lost notebook, Ramanujan states an asymptotic formula for a continued fraction generalizing that in the title. The second main goal of this paper is to prove this asymptotic formula.

We show that the real-valued function on the moduli space of pointed rational curves, defined as the critical value of the Liouville action functional on a hyperbolic -sphere with conical singularities of arbitrary orders , generates accessory parameters of the associated Fuchsian differential equation as their common antiderivative. We introduce a family of Kähler metrics on parameterized by the set of orders , explicitly relate accessory parameters to these metrics, and prove that the functions are their Kähler potentials.

Let denote a -adic local field of residual characteristic . This article gives formulas, valid on the regular elliptic set, for the irreducible supercuspidal characters of which correspond to characters of a ramified Cartan subgroup. In the case in which does not contain cube roots of unity, i.e., the case in which ramified cubic extensions of degree over cannot be Galois, base change results concerning ``simple types" due to Bushnell and Henniart (1996) are used in the proofs.

We use the geometry of the geodesics of a certain left-invariant metric on the Lie group to find explicit related formulas for two topological objects: the Blakers-Massey element (a generator of ) and an exotic (i.e. not isotopic to the identity) diffeomorphism of (C. E. Durán, 2001). These formulas depend on two quaternions and their conjugates and we produce their extensions to the octonions through formulas for a generator of and exotic diffeomorphisms of , thus giving explicit gluing maps for half of the 15-dimensional exotic spheres expressed as the union of two 15-disks.

We consider subgroups of -diffeomorphisms of the circle which act transitively on -tuples of points. We show, in particular, that these subgroups are dense in the group of homeomorphisms of . A stronger result concerning -approximations is obtained as well. The techniques employed in this paper rely on Lie algebra ideas and they also provide partial generalizations to the differentiable case of some results previously established in the analytic category.

We consider the Dirichlet problem

for two second-order elliptic operators , , in a bounded Lipschitz domain . The coefficients belong to the space of bounded mean oscillation with a suitable small modulus. We assume that is regular in for some , , that is, for all continuous boundary data . Here is the surface measure on and is the nontangential maximal operator. The aim of this paper is to establish sufficient conditions on the difference of the coefficients that will assure the perturbed operator to be regular in for some , .

Let and let be the ideal of generically chosen forms of degrees . We give the precise graded Betti numbers of in the following cases:
  • ;
  • and is even;
  • , is odd and ;
  • is even and all generators have the same degree, , which is even;
  • is even and ;
  • is odd, is even, and .
We give very good bounds on the graded Betti numbers in many other cases. We also extend a result of M. Boij by giving the graded Betti numbers for a generic compressed Gorenstein algebra (i.e., one for which the Hilbert function is maximal, given and the socle degree) when is even and the socle degree is large. A recurring theme is to examine when and why the minimal free resolution may be forced to have redundant summands. We conjecture that if the forms all have the same degree, then there are no redundant summands, and we present some evidence for this conjecture.

The notion of a quasiuniform fat point subscheme is introduced and conjectures for the Hilbert function and minimal free resolution of the ideal defining are put forward. In a large range of cases, it is shown that the Hilbert function conjecture implies the resolution conjecture. In addition, the main result gives the first determination of the resolution of the th symbolic power of an ideal defining general points of when both and are large (in particular, for infinitely many for each of infinitely many , and for infinitely many for every 2$">). Resolutions in other cases, such as ``fat points with tails', are also given. Except where an explicit exception is made, all results hold for an arbitrary algebraically closed field . As an incidental result, a bound for the regularity of is given which is often a significant improvement on previously known bounds.

If is a separable Banach space, we consider the existence of non-trivial twisted sums , where or For the case we show that there exists a twisted sum whose quotient map is strictly singular if and only if contains no copy of . If we prove an analogue of a theorem of Johnson and Zippin (for ) by showing that all such twisted sums are trivial if is the dual of a space with summable Szlenk index (e.g., could be Tsirelson's space); a converse is established under the assumption that has an unconditional finite-dimensional decomposition. We also give conditions for the existence of a twisted sum with with strictly singular quotient map.

Let be an elliptic curve defined over and with complex multiplication. For a prime of good reduction, let be the reduction of modulo We find the density of the primes for which is a cyclic group. An asymptotic formula for these primes had been obtained conditionally by J.-P. Serre in 1976, and unconditionally by Ram Murty in 1979. The aim of this paper is to give a new simpler unconditional proof of this asymptotic formula and also to provide explicit error terms in the formula.

Let be a compact connected Lie group, and a Hamiltonian -space with proper moment map . We give a surjectivity result which expresses the -theory of the symplectic quotient in terms of the equivariant -theory of the original manifold , under certain technical conditions on . This result is a natural -theoretic analogue of the Kirwan surjectivity theorem in symplectic geometry. The main technical tool is the -theoretic Atiyah-Bott lemma, which plays a fundamental role in the symplectic geometry of Hamiltonian -spaces. We discuss this lemma in detail and highlight the differences between the -theory and rational cohomology versions of this lemma.

We also introduce a -theoretic version of equivariant formality and prove that when the fundamental group of is torsion-free, every compact Hamiltonian -space is equivariantly formal. Under these conditions, the forgetful map is surjective, and thus every complex vector bundle admits a stable equivariant structure. Furthermore, by considering complex line bundles, we show that every integral cohomology class in admits an equivariant extension in .

We define , a substructure of (the lattice of classes), and show that a quotient structure of , , is isomorphic to . The result builds on the isomorphism machinery, and allows us to transfer invariant classes from to , though not, in general, orbits. Further properties of and ramifications of the isomorphism are explored, including degrees of equivalence classes and degree invariance.

In this paper we give a classification of the rank two -local finite groups for odd . This study requires the analysis of the possible saturated fusion systems in terms of the outer automorphism group of the possible -radical subgroups. Also, for each case in the classification, either we give a finite group with the corresponding fusion system or we check that it corresponds to an exotic -local finite group, getting some new examples of these for .

Let be a map of free modules over a commutative ring . Fitting's Lemma shows that the ``Fitting ideal,' the ideal of minors of , annihilates the cokernel of and is a good approximation to the whole annihilator in a certain sense. In characteristic 0 we define a Fitting ideal in the more general case of a map of graded free modules over a -graded skew-commutative algebra and prove corresponding theorems about the annihilator; for example, the Fitting ideal and the annihilator of the cokernel are equal in the generic case. Our results generalize the classical Fitting Lemma in the commutative case and extend a key result of Green (1999) in the exterior algebra case. They depend on the Berele-Regev theory of representations of general linear Lie superalgebras. In the purely even and purely odd cases we also offer a standard basis approach to the module when is a generic matrix.

The paper contains a proof that the mapping class group of the manifold is isomorphic to a central extension of the (full) Jacobi group by the group of 7-dimensional homotopy spheres. Using a presentation of the group and the -invariant of the homotopy spheres, we give a presentation of this mapping class group with generators and defining relations. We also compute the cohomology of the group and determine 2-cocycles that correspond to the mapping class group of .
