Three alkyltrimethylammonium bromides (i.e., dodecyl-, tetradecyl-, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide or DTAB, TTAB, and CTAB, respectively) were used to remove a blue solvent-based ink from a printed surface of high-density polyethylene bottles. Either an increase in the alkyl chain length or the surfactant concentration was found to increase the deinking efficiency. Complete deinking was achieved at concentrations about 3, 8, and 24 times of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of CTAB, TTAB, and DTAB, respectively. For CTAB, ink removal started at a concentration close to or less than its CMC and increased appreciably at concentrations greater than its CMC, while for TTAB and DTAB, significant deinking was only achieved at concentrations much greater than their CMCs. Corresponding to the deinking efficiency of CTAB in the CMC region, the zeta potential of ink particles was found to increase with increasing alkyl chain length and concentration of the surfactants, which later leveled off at some higher concentrations. Wettability of the surfactants on an ink surface increased with increasing alkyl chain length and concentration of the surfactants. Lastly, solubilization of ink binder in the surfactant micelles was found to increase with increasing alkyl chain length and surfactant concentration. We conclude that adsorption of surfactant on the ink pigment is crucial to deinking due to modification of wettability, zeta potential, pigment/water interfacial tension, and dispersion stability. Solubilization of binder (epoxy) into micelles is necessary for good deinking because the dissolution of the binder is required before the pigment particles can be released from the polymer surface.  相似文献

The wettability of montmorillonite could be in situ modified by cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The type and stability of emulsions prepared from montmorillonite with different concentrations of cationic surfactant were investigated, and a double phase inversion of emulsions was observed. The adsorption of CTAB on montmorillonite particles was studied by surface tension and zeta potential measurements, and the variation of the wettability of particles with the concentration of CTAB was characterized by the contact angle measurements. The adsorption of particles at the surface of emulsion droplets was observed by laser-induced confocal scanning microscopy. At low surfactant concentrations, the adsorption of CTAB on montmorillonite increased the hydrophobicity of the particles, and the stability of oil-in-water emulsions was enhanced. With the increase of the CTAB concentration, montmorillonite particles changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, and water-in-oil emulsions were obtained. However, at higher surfactant concentrations, the emulsions inverts to O/W again because montmorillonite particles were reconverted into hydrophilic due to the formation of CTAB bilayer on the surface of montmorillonite.  相似文献

The properties of soluble gelatinionic surfactant complexes and insoluble particles were evaluated. It was found that colloidal particles of gelatin A – cationic surfactant (dodecyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide, DTAB, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) were formed. Binding isotherms showed that these particles are obtained above the CMC of each surfactant, while cooperative binding takes place. Surface tension measurements conducted for both gelatin/DTAB and gelatin/anionic surfactant, SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) showed a break in the curve describing surface tension vs number of bound surfactant molecules, (ν) at concentrations below the CMC of each surfactant alone. This break, which is attributed to CMC 1, is observed at the same number of bound surfactant mol ecules ν∼2 for both gelatin/surfactant couples. Contact angle measurements showed that the maximal hydro-phobicity of the gelatin-surfactant particles is obtained at the same concentration range in which the precipitation occurs. It was also found that the hydrophobicity of gelatin-SDS particles, is higher than that of the gelatin-cationic surfactants, due to a different composition of the resulting particles. The zeta potential of the particles indicated charge neutralization and even charge reversal for gelatin-CTAB at high surfactant concentration. The nanoparticles of chitosan (CS) were prepared using pentasodium triphosphate (TPP) as a crosslinking agent and the influences of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on the physicochemical properties of the CS-TPP nanoparticles were first studied by laser light scattering, zeta potential, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The concentration played a significant role in controlling the particle size of CS and the overlap concentration c(*) was testified to be about 1.0 mg/mL. The combination of static light scattering (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) allowed us to obtain more information about the CS-TPP nanoparticles in the presence of surfactant molecules. The addition of CTAB could reduce the hydrodynamic diameter of nanoparticles effectively in the salt solutions and simultaneously increase the zeta potential of the nanoparticles. The effect of CTAB concentration on the size of CS-TPP nanoparticle was also examined. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of CTAB was used to interpret the complicated complex formed by the polyelectrolyte and the surfactant. Finally, TEM was used to observe the CS-TPP nanoparticles, which were affected by CTAB, to verify the results obtained by light scattering.  相似文献

Precipitation or coprecipitation of polyelectrolytes has been largely investigated. However, the precipitation of polyelectrolytes via addition of charged and non‐charged surfactants has not been systematically studied and reported. Consequently, the aim of this work is to investigate the effect of different surfactants (anionic, cationic, non‐charged and zwitterionic) on the precipitation of cationic and anionic polymethylmethacrylate polymers (Eudragit). The surfactants effect has been investigated as a function of their concentration. Special attention has been dedicated to the CMC range and to the colloidal characterization of the formed dispersions. Moreover, the effect of salt (NaCl) and pH was also addressed. It is pointed out that non‐ionic and zwitterionic surfactants do not interact with charged Eudragit E100 and L100. For oppositely charged Eudragit E100/SDS and Eudragit L100/CTAB, precipitation occurs, and the obtained dispersions have been characterized in terms of particle size distribution and zeta potential. It was established that the binding of SDS molecules to Eudragit E100 polymer chains is made through the negative charges of the surfactant heads under the CMC value whereas binding of CTAB to Eudragit L100 chains is made at a CTAB concentration 5 times above its CMC. For Eudragit E100/SDS system, a more acidic medium induces aggregation. A same result was observed for the Eudragit L100/CTAB at a more basic pH. Moreover, it was observed that increasing salt concentration (higher than 100 mM) led to aggregation as generally observed for polycations/anionic surfactant systems.  相似文献

Isothermal titration calorimetry was used to monitor the adsorption of the surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) on different sized pure and carboxy functionalized polystyrene nanoparticles prepared by the mini-emulsion process. The ITC experiment gives, additionally to the CMC values, information about the interaction of the surfactant molecules to the particle’s surface due to the particle surface properties. The adsorption heat depends on the chemical composition of the polymer as well on the particle size. It also provides information about the surface coverage with surfactant and the number of additional adsorbed molecules per particle until full coverage by surfactant is obtained. The surfactant adsorption increases from 0.3 molecules per nm2 for 50 nm to 8.5 molecules per nm2 for carboxy functionalized particles with diameters larger than 160 nm. The area A Surf-dens after the adsorption process gives information about the packing density of surfactant molecules on the particles in dependence of carboxy groups: an increasing number of carboxylic groups decreases the area occupied per SDS molecule. The adsorption process was also monitored by zeta potential measurements, where an increasing potential during the adsorption was detected.  相似文献

Cationic poly(styrene-co-N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)(P(St-co-DMAEMA)) latexes were prepared in the absence of surfactant by using 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride(AIBA) as the initiator. The effects of the AIBA concentration, HCl/DMAEMA molar ratio and DMAEMA amount on the emulsion polymerization and the latex properties were investigated. The particle morphology and size, the zeta potential and the amino distribution of the P(Stco-DMAEMA) latexes were characterized by transmission electron microscope(TEM), dynamic light scattering(DLS) and conductometric titration, respectively. Results showed that the emulsion polymerization performed smoothly with high monomer conversion and narrow particle size distribution under the optimized conditions with AIBA concentration of1 wt%, HCl/DMAEMA molar ratio of 1.2 and DMAEMA content of 5 wt%. The diameter of the dried latex particles decreased and the density of amino groups on the particle surfaces increased with increasing the DMAEMA content. The zeta potential of the P(St-co-DMAEMA) latexes was p H-dependent and the zero point was around at p H 7.2. A facile method was developed to fabricate P(St-co-DMAEMA)/laponite hybrid nanoparticles via electrostatic adsorption, in which the loading capacity of laponite platelets reached 17.7 wt%, and the resultant hybrid nanoparticles showed good thermal stability.  相似文献

Evaluation on dispersion behavior of the aqueous copper nano-suspensions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper presents a procedure for preparing a nanofluid which is solid-liquid composite material consisting of solid nanoparticles with sizes typically of 1-100 nm suspended in liquid. By means of the procedure, Cu-H(2)O nanofluids with and without dispersant were prepared, whose sediment photographs and particle size distribution were given to illustrate the stability and evenness of suspension with dispersant. Aiming at the dispersion of nano-Cu is regarded as the guide of heat transfer enhancement, the dispersion behavior of Cu nanoparticles in water were studied under different pH values, different dispersant types and concentration by the method of zeta potential, absorbency and sedimentation photographs. The results show that zeta potential has good corresponding relation with absorbency, and the higher absolute value of zeta potential and the absorbency are, the better dispersion and stability in system is. The absolute value of zeta potential and the absorbency are higher at pH 9.5. Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) [corrected] and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) can significantly increase the absolute value of zeta potential of particle surfaces by electrostatic repulsions, and polyoxyethylene (10) nonyl phenyl ether (TX-10) can form a thick hydration layer on the particle surfaces by steric interference, which leads to the enhancement of the stability for Cu suspensions. In the 0.1% copper nano-suspensions, the optimizing concentrations for TX-10, CTAB [corrected] and SDBS are 0.43, 0.05, and 0.07%, respectively, which have the best dispersion results.  相似文献

The adsorption of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) onto a ceramic glaze mixture composed of limestone, feldspar, quartz, and kaolin has been investigated. Both adsorption isotherms and the average particle zeta potential have been studied in order to understand the suspension stability as a function of pH, ionic strength, and surfactant concentration. The adsorption of small amounts of cationic CPC onto the primarily negatively charged surfaces of the particles at pH 7 and 9 results in strong attraction and flocculation due to hydrophobic interactions. At higher surfactant concentrations a zeta potential of more than +60 mV results from the bilayered adsorbed surfactant, providing stability at salt concentrations < or = 0.01 M. At 0.1 M salt poor stability results despite substantial zeta potential values. Three mechanisms for SDBS adsorption have been identified. When anionic SDBS monomers either adsorb by electrostatic interactions with the few positive surface sites at high pH or adsorb onto like charged negative surface sites due to dispersion or hydrophobic interactions, the magnitude of the negative zeta potential increases slightly. At pH 9 this increase is enough to promote stability with an average zeta potential of more than -55 mV, whereas at pH 7 the zeta potential is lower at about -45 mV. The stability of suspensions at pH 7 is additionally due to steric repulsion caused by the adsorption of thick layers of neutrally charged Ca(DBS)2 complexes created when the surfactant interacts with dissolved calcium ions from the calcium carbonate component.  相似文献

The interaction of cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with swollen and collapsed poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) monodisperse nanogel particles was investigated by electrophoretic mobility, dynamic light scattering, and potentiometric surfactant activity measurements. The surfactant binds to the nanogel particles as monomers in the whole CTAB concentration range and binds in the form of surfactant aggregates as well above a critical concentration (cac) in both the swollen and collapsed state of the pNIPAM. The swollen particle system is a thermodynamically stable solution. The collapsed nanogel particle system is an electrically stabilized colloid dispersion, which coagulates when the particles are near the electrically neutral state. An analytically undetectably small amount of surfactant binding (5 × 10(-7) mol/g of pNIPAM) leads to a dramatic effect on the stability of the pNIPAM nanogel system. The electrokinetic potential versus surfactant concentration functions unexpectedly strongly depend upon the temperature around the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the polymer, which was interpreted by the change of the polymer segment density in the surface layer of the collapsing nanogel particles.  相似文献

Cationic latexes were prepared through emulsion copolymerization of styrene(St) and butyl acrylate(BA) with a cationic surfactant, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB).Latex properties, including particle size, size distribution,ζpotential, surface tension and monomer conversion, were determined for latexes prepared with different CTAB amounts. Evolution of these properties during emulsion polymerization was followed in order to understand the mechanism of the particles formation. Results showed that both particle size andζpotential were function of polymerization time and latex solids.Parallel emulsion polymerizations with cationic, anionic charged initiator and charge-free initiators were also carried out,the latex properties were determined at different polymerization time. All these results were attentively interpreted based on the mechanisms of emulsion polymerization, surfactant adsorption and latex particle stabilization.  相似文献

Charge in ionic micelles determines the trends of their stability and their practical applications. Charge can be calculated from zeta potential (zeta) measurements, which, in turn, can be obtained by Doppler microelectrophoresis. In this study, the electrophoretic properties of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) in KBr aqueous solution (0-6 mM) were determined by Doppler microelectrophoresis. At very low surfactant concentrations (up to 6 mM), zeta potential was quite constant and due to the ionized monomers (DTA+). Above 6 mM, zeta potential increased to a maximum at surfactant concentrations still below the critical micellar concentration (CMC). This increase could be explained by a formation of nonmicellar aggregates of DTAB. Then, above the CMC, zeta potential underwent an abrupt reduction, which was dependent qualitatively and quantitatively on KBr concentration, and which could be due to an increase of the number of counterions adsorbed on the micelle surface. Calculation of effective micellar charge from zeta potential gave the surface charge density. Comparing this value with the theoretical, obtained from geometrical considerations, a fraction of 0.29 of charged micellar headgroups was obtained when DTAB was in aqueous solution, which is consistent with the value obtained by conductivity measurements.  相似文献

Polyacrylonitrile nanoparticles in sizes ranging from approximately 35 to 270 nm were prepared by dispersion/emulsion polymerization of acrylonitrile in a continuous aqueous phase in the presence of potassium persulfate as initiator and various alkyl-sulfate and sulfonate surfactants. The influence of various polymerization parameters (e.g., concentration of monomer and initiator, type and concentration of surfactant, temperature and time of polymerization, ionic strength, pH and co-solvent concentration) on the properties (e.g., size and size distribution, yield, stability, etc.) of the particles has been investigated. The polymerization of acrylonitrile may occur in two major locations: in the aqueous continuous phase (dispersion polymerization) and/or within the surfactant micelles (emulsion polymerization). A discussion concerning the role of these two mechanisms under different conditions, including comparison with previous literature, is also presented. Surface and bulk characterizations of the particles were performed by methods such as transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential, and gravimetric measurements.  相似文献

The colloid stability of supramolecular assemblies composed of the synthetic cationic lipid dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) supported on polystyrene amidine (PSA) microspheres was evaluated via turbidimetry kinetics, dynamic light scattering for particle sizing, zeta-potential analysis, and determination of DODAB adsorption on CMC-covered particles. At 0.1 g L(-1) CMC and 2 x 10(11) PSA particles/mL, CMC did not induce significant particle flocculation, and a vast majority of CMC-covered single particles were present in the dispersion so that this was the condition chosen for determining DODAB concentration (C) effects on particle size and zeta potentials. At 0.35 mM DODAB, charge neutralization, maximal size, and visible precipitation indicated extensive flocculation and minimal colloid stability for the DODAB/CMC/PSA assembly. At 0.1 g L(-1) CMC, isotherms of high affinity for DODAB adsorption on CMC-covered particles presented a plateau at a limiting adsorption of 700 x 10(17) DODAB molecules adsorbed per square meter PSA which was well above bilayer deposition on a smooth particle surface. The polyelectrolyte layer on hydrophobic particles was swelled and fluffy (ca. 11-nm hydrodynamic thickness), and maximal adsorption of DODAB lipid onto this layer produced a compressed composite cationic film with 20 mV of zeta potential and about 10-nm mean thickness. The assembly of cationic lipid/CMC layer/polymeric particle was stable only well above charge neutralization of the polyelectrolyte by the cationic lipid, at relatively large lipid concentrations (at and above 1 mM DODAB) with charge neutralization leading to extensive particle aggregation.  相似文献

Stable rodlike nanoparticles with highly controlled surface charge density have been developed by the free radical polymerization of the mixture of polymerizable cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium 4-vinylbenzoate (CTVB), and hydrotropic salt sodium 4-styrenesulfonate (NaSS) in aqueous solution. The surface charge of the polymerized CTVB/NaSS rodlike nanoparticles was controlled by varying the NaSS concentration during the polymerization process, and the charge variation was interpreted in terms of the overcharging effect in colloidal systems. The SANS measurements show that the diameter of the polymerized CTVB/NaSS rodlike nanoparticles is constant at 4 nm and the particle length ranges from 24 to 85 nm, depending on the NaSS concentration. The polymerized particles are longest when the NaSS concentration is 5 mol % which corresponds to the charge inversion or neutral point. The SANS and zeta potential measurements show that the Coulomb interactions between the particles are strongly dependent on the NaSS concentration and the zeta potential of the polymerized CTVB/NaSS nanoparticles changes from positive to negative (+12.8 approximately -44.2 mV) as the concentration of NaSS increases from 0 to 40 mol %. As the NaSS concentration is further increased, the zeta potential is saturated at approximately -50 mV.

The effect of metal ions (Cu(II), Zn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), La(III), Fe(III)) on the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of ionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)) were investigated at 25±0.1°C, μ = 0.1 M (KNO3), using conductivity method in this paper. A series of general empirical expressions about the relationship between the CMC values for SDS and CTAB and the concentrations of metal ions have been derived. The results showed that the CMC values for both SDS and CTAB decreased with increasing the concentrations of metal ions. This can be interpreted by the counterion effect and the entropy driving effect.  相似文献

Different experimental methods including ellipsometry, zeta potential measurements, imbibition studies, and contact angle measurements were used to study the mechanism and influencing factors of wettability alteration of water-wet sandstone surface caused by CTAB (hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide). Results show that when the concentration of CTAB reaches a certain level (below CMC), due to the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged head groups of CTAB and the negatively charged sandstone surface, the monolayer of CTAB is formed and hydrophobic chains of CTAB molecules are toward the aqueous phase, making the solid surface oil-wet. When the concentration of CTAB continues to increase (above CMC), due to the hydrophobic interaction, the compact bilayer of CTAB is formed and hydrophilic head groups of CTAB molecules are toward the aqueous phase, rendering the solid surface water-wet. The contact angles between the oil–water interface and the surface treated with CTAB increase with the increase of the concentration of NaCl and CaCl2. Compared to NaCl, the inorganic salt CaCl2 has a greater impact on the contact angle. In addition, the contact angles increase with the increase of temperature and decrease with the increase of pH value of the aqueous solution.  相似文献
