When the thicknesses of thin films reduce to microns or even nanometers, surface energy and surface interaction often play a significant role in their deformation behavior and surface morphology. The spinodal surface instability induced by the van der Waals force in a soft elastic thin film perfectly bonded to a rigid substrate is investigated theoretically using the bifurcation theory of elastic structures. The analytical solution is derived for the critical condition of spinodal surface morphology instability by accounting for the competition of the van der Waals interaction energy, elastic strain energy and surface energy. Detailed examinations on the effect of surface energy, thickness and elastic properties of the film show that the characteristic wavelength of the deformation bifurcation mode depends on the film thickness via an exponential relation, with the power index in the range from 0.749 to 1.0. The theoretical solution has a good agreement with relevant experiment results.  相似文献

Summary  The morphological stability of epitaxial thin elastic films on a substrate by van der Waals force is discussed. It is found that only van der Waals force with negative Hamaker constant tends to stabilize the film, and the lower bound for the Hamaker constant is also obtained for the stability of thin film. The critical value of the undulation wavelength is found to be a function of both film thickness and external stress. The charateristic time-scale for surface mass diffusion scales to the fourth power to the wavelength of the perturbation. Received 4 December 2000; accepted for publication 31 July 2001  相似文献

We investigate the surface instability of an anisotropic elastic half-plane subjected to surface van der Waals forces due to the influence of another rigid contactor by means of the Stroh formalism. It is observed that the surface of a generally anisotropic elastic half-plane subjected to van der Waals forces from another rigid flat is always unstable. The wave number of the surface wrinkling is only reliant on the positive M22 component of the 3 × 3 surface admittance tensor M, the van der Waals interaction coefficient β and the surface energy γ of the elastic half-plane. The decay rate of surface perturbation along the direction normal to the surface of the anisotropic half-plane is different from the wave number, a phenomenon different from that observed for an isotropic half-plane.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the generalization of a well-known result on reducible equations by Courant and Friedrichs [7] and a motivational result on compressible Euler system within the context of ideal gases by Li et al. [10]. The characteristic decomposition technique has been used to prove that any hyperbolic state, adjacent to a constant state, is simple for a pseudo-steady isentropic irrotational flow, modeled by Euler equations, in van der Waals fluids. Furthermore, this result is extended to full Euler system in self-similar coordinates provided the pseudo-flow characteristics are extending into a constant state.  相似文献

An electromechanical integrated electrostatic harmonic actuator is promising for the miniaturization of electromechanical devices. As the dimensions of the actuator decrease, the effects of the van der Waals force become obvious. In this study, by considering the nonlinearity of electrostatic and van der Waals forces, nonlinear vibration equations of the flexible ring of an electrostatic harmonic actuator are deduced. Using these equations, the nonlinear free vibration and nonlinear forced response of the actuator are investigated. The effects of the van der Waals force on the nonlinear vibration of the flexible ring are analyzed. Results show that these effects of the van der Waals force are relatively obvious under some conditions and should be considered.  相似文献

The stability characteristics of an ultra-thin layer of a viscous liquid flowing down a cylindrical fibre are investigated by a linear theory. The film with the thickness less than 100 nm is driven by an external force and under the influence of the van der Waals forces. The results show that, when the relative film thickness decreases, the curvature of the fibre depresses the development of the linear perturbations, whereas the van der Waals forces promote the instabilities. This competition results in a non-monotonous dependence of the growth rate on the relative film thickness. The critical curves are also obtained to describe the transition from the absolute instability to the convective instability, indicating that the van der Waals forces can enlarge the absolutely unstable region. Furthermore, the surface tension can cause the development of the absolute instability, whereas the external force has an opposite effect.  相似文献

A novel numerical method for simulations of isothermal, compressible two-phase flows of one fluid component near the critical point is presented on the basis of a diffuse-interface model and a Van der Waals equation of state. Because of the non-convexity of the latter, the nature of the set of governing equations is mixed hyperbolic–elliptic. This prevents the application of standard numerical methods for compressible flow. Moreover, the Korteweg capillary stress tensor, characteristic for the diffuse-interface approach, introduces third-order spatial derivatives of mass density in the Navier–Stokes equation, resulting in a dispersive behavior of the solution. Our computational method relies on a transformation of the conserved variables, which controls dispersion, stabilizes the numerical simulation and enables the use of coarser grids. A one-dimensional simulation shows that this method provides better stability and accuracy than without transformation of variables. Two- and three-dimensional simulations for isothermal liquid–vapor flows, in particular the retraction of a liquid non-spherical drop in vapor and the binary droplet collision in vapor, show the applicability of the method. The surface tension calculated from the numerical results is in good agreement with its theoretical value if the computational grid is sufficiently fine.  相似文献

We have established the cohesive law for interfaces between a carbon nanotube (CNT) and polymer that are not well bonded and are characterized by the van der Waals force. The tensile cohesive strength and cohesive energy are given in terms of the area density of carbon nanotube and volume density of polymer, as well as the parameters in the van der Waals force. For a CNT in an infinite polymer, the shear cohesive stress vanishes, and the tensile cohesive stress depends only on the opening displacement. For a CNT in a finite polymer matrix, the tensile cohesive stress remains the same, but the shear cohesive stress depends on both opening and sliding displacements, i.e., the tension/shear coupling. The simple, analytical expressions of the cohesive law are useful to study the interaction between CNT and polymer, such as in CNT-reinforced composites. The effect of polymer surface roughness on the cohesive law is also studied.  相似文献

Explicit formulas are derived for the van der Waals (vdW) interaction between any two layers of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT). Based on the derived formulas, an efficient algorithm is established for the buckling analysis of multi-walled CNTs, in which individual tubes are modeled as a continuum cylindrical shell. The explicit expressions are also derived for the buckling of double-walled CNTs. In previous studies by Ru (J. Appl. Phys. 87 (2000b) 7227) and Wang et al. (Int. J. Solids Struct. 40 (2003) 3893), only the vdW interaction between adjacent two layers was considered and the vdW interaction between the other two layers was neglected. The vdW interaction coefficient was treated as a constant that was not dependent on the radii of the tubes. However, the formulas derived herein reveal that the vdW interaction coefficients are dependent on the change of interlayer spacing and the radii of the tubes. With the increase of radii, the coefficients approach constants, and the constants between two adjacent layers are about 10% higher than those reported by Wang et al. (Int. J. Solids. Struct. 40 (2003) 3893). In addition, the numerical results show that the vdW interaction will lead to a higher critical buckling load in multi-walled CNTs. The effect of the tube radius on the critical buckling load of a multi-walled CNT is also examined.  相似文献

Spatial pattern formation in stiff thin films on compliant substrates is investigated based on a nonlinear 3D finite element model. Typical post-bifurcation patterns include 1D sinusoidal, checkerboard and herringbone shapes, with possible spatial modulations, boundary effects and localizations. The post-buckling behavior often leads to intricate response curves with several secondary bifurcations that were rarely studied and only in the case of periodic cells. The proposed finite element procedure allows accurately describing these bifurcation portraits by taking into account the effect of boundary conditions. It relies on the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) that offers considerable advantages to get a robust path-following technique and to detect multiple bifurcations. The occurrence and evolution of sinusoidal, checkerboard and herringbone patterns will be highlighted.  相似文献

Nonlinear buckling of elastic thin films on compliant substrates is studied by modeling and simulations to reveal the roles of pre-strain, elastic modulus ratio, and interfacial properties in morphological transition from wrinkles to buckle-delamination blisters. The model integrates an interfacial cohesive zone model with the Föppl–von Kármán plate theory and Green function method within the general framework of energy minimization. A kinetics approach is developed for numerical simulations. Subject to a uniaxial pre-strain, the numerical simulations confirm the analytically predicted critical conditions for onset of wrinkling and wrinkle-induced delamination, with which a phase diagram is constructed. It is found that, with increasing pre-strain, the equilibrium configuration evolves from flat to wrinkles, to concomitant wrinkles and buckle-delamination, and to an array of parallel straight blisters. The height and width of the buckle-delamination blisters can be approximately described by a set of scaling laws with respect to the pre-strain and interfacial toughness. Subject to an equi-biaxial pre-strain, the critical conditions are determined numerically to construct a similar phase diagram for the buckling modes. Moreover, by varying the pre-strain, modulus ratio, and interfacial toughness, a rich variety of equilibrium configurations are simulated, including straight blisters, and network blisters with or without wrinkles. These results provide considerable insight into diverse surface patterns in layered material systems as a result of the mechanical interactions between the film and the substrate through their interface, which suggests potential control parameters for designing specific surface patterns.  相似文献

In contrast to terrestrial environment, the harsh lunar environment conditions include lower gravity acceleration, ultra-high vacuum and high (low) temperature in the daytime (night-time). This paper focuses on the effects of those mentioned features on soil cutting tests, a simplified excavation test, to reduce the risk of lunar excavation missions. Soil behavior and blade performance were analyzed under different environmental conditions. The results show that: (1) the cutting resistance and the energy consumption increase linearly with the gravity. The bending moment has a bigger increasing rate in low gravity fields due to a decreasing moment arm; (2) the cutting resistance, energy consumption and bending moment increase significantly because of the raised soil strength on the lunar environment, especially in low gravity fields. Under the lunar environment, the proportions of cutting resistance, bending moment and energy consumption due to the effect of the van der Waals forces are significant. Thus, they should be taken into consideration when planning excavations on the Moon. Therefore, considering that the maximum frictional force between the excavator and the lunar surface is proportional to the gravity acceleration, the same excavator that works efficiently on the Earth may not be able to work properly on the Moon.  相似文献

Wrinkling phenomena of stiff thin films on compliant substrates are investigated based on a non-linear finite element model. The resulting non-linear equations are then solved by the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) that gives interactive access to semi-analytical equilibrium branches, which offers considerable advantage of reliability compared with classical iterative algorithms. Bifurcation points are detected through computing bifurcation indicators well adapted to the ANM. The effect of boundary conditions and material properties of the substrate on the bifurcation portrait is carefully studied. The evolution of wrinkling patterns and post-bifurcation modes including period-doubling has been observed beyond the onset of the primary sinusoidal wrinkling mode in the post-buckling range.  相似文献

It is shown in this paper that interfacial effects have a profound impact on the scale-dependent yield strength and strain hardening rates (flow stress) of metallic thin films on elastic substrates. This is achieved by developing a higher-order strain gradient plasticity theory based on the principle of virtual power and the laws of thermodynamics. This theory enforces microscopic boundary conditions at interfaces which relate a microtraction stress to the interfacial energy at the interface. It is shown that the film bulk length scale controls the size effect if a rigid interface is assumed whereas the interfacial length scale dominates if a compliant interface is assumed.  相似文献

The structural instability of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has captured extensive attention due to the unique characteristic of extremely thin hollow cylinder structure. The previous studies usually focus on the buckling behavior without considering the effects of the wall number and initial pressure. In this paper, the axial buckling behavior of MWCNTs with the length-to-outermost radius ratio less than 20 is investigated within the framework of the Donnell shell theory. The governing equations for the infinitesimal buckling of MWCNTs are established, accounting for the van der Waals (vdW) interaction between layers. The effects of the wall number, initial pressure prior to buckling, and aspect ratio on the critical buckling mode, buckling load, and buckling strain are discussed, respectively. Specially, the four-walled and twenty-walled CNTs are studied in detail, indicating the fact that the buckling instability may occur in other layers besides the outermost layer. The obtained results extend the buckling analysis of the continuum-based model, and provide theoretical support for the application of CNTs.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to study flow and heat transfer characteristics of a viscous Casson thin film flow over an unsteady stretching sheet subject to variable heat flux in the presence of slip velocity condition and viscous dissipation. The governing equations are partial differential equations. They are reduced to a set of highly nonlinear ordinary differential equations by suitable similarity transformations. The resulting similarity equations are solved numerically with a shooting method. Comparisons with previous works are made, and the results are found to be in excellent agreement. In the present work, the effects of the unsteadiness parameter, the Casson parameter, the Eckert number, the slip velocity parameter, and the Prandtl number on flow and heat transfer characteristics are discussed. Also, the local skin-friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number at the stretching sheet are computed and discussed.  相似文献
